Review: Daptone main man Bosco Mann firmly believes that Lee Fields' 1998 album Let's Get a Groove On played a big part in sparking the modern funk revival of the last two decades. Whether or not that's the case is debatable, but there's no denying the quality of the album - as this fully re-mastered reissue proves. The album's genius lies not in the insanely good (and mostly deliciously heavy) J.B's-like funk backing tracks, but the sheer energy and impassioned quality of Fields' vocal performances. It's one of those albums that not only sounds like it could have been recorded at the turn-of-the-'70s, but should also be in the record box of any serious funk enthusiast. In other words, you need this in your life.

Review: Lee Fields is a stone-cold soul legend who has a long and storied career. He started back in the late 60s and is now well over 50 years deep in a career that's given rise to tens of vital albums and plenty of classic tunes that have helped generate more than one modern soul revival in their time. His Faithful Man album is one of his many greats and it is now a full ten years old so gets a special reissue on grape purple vinyl LP courtesy of Truth & Soul. It is a harmonious, string-coated Motown homage with no holds barred when it comes to emotion or energy. There are too many classics to mention here so do yourself a favour and cop this one now.

Review: North Carolina man Lee Fields is a storied singer who has had a long career, albeit with a number of big gaps. He's been in fine form in recent years though, turning out some vital albums that join the dots between sixties soul and the modern day sound. He's a regular on Big Crown Records now links with his band The Expressions once more to strike a timeless Motown vibe that is classy and classic. Big Crown Vaults Vol 1 features plenty more of his achingly gorgeous vocals over nice lo-fi rhythms and also includes instrumental versions of each cut.

Review: 1970s soul survivor Lee Fields has struck up a pretty special relationship with The Expressions, the house band of Truth & Soul writer/arranger/producer Leon Michels. The veteran vocalist has now released a trio of brilliant albums with the combo, as well as some killer singles. "Coming Home", a sweet-natured slab of '60s soul complete with brilliant musicianship and authentically fuzzy production, is another must-have. B-side "Precious Love", a torch song with a backing track that sits somewhere between punchy Southern Soul and laidback funk, is also superb. Their latest collaborative single, "Special Night", is something of a cinematic soul treat, with Fields wringing every bit of emotion out of his cracking, heartfelt vocal. The sumptuous A-side (subtitled 'Part 1') is joined on the flip by a sparser, stripped back version ('Part 2') that somehow manages to further emphasize the brilliance of Fields' lyrics and vocal. Review: Some call Lee Fields The Window because he's a complete and utter ledge. We prefer to call him a soul magician who's not lost his touch since 1969. Taken from his brand new album of the same name, "Faithful Man" is a harmonious, string coated Motown homage with no holds barred when it comes to emotion or energy. The Bare Bones remix is an added boon. Stripped back, subdued and full of roomy reverb there's a demo-like quality to it, but in the best possible way.
