Review: Pinch's Bristol-based Tectonic stable marks a new chapter with Tectonic Sound, a six-part, 24-track vinyl series, discomancing an unknowable but part steerable future while also leaning on firmly implanted roots. Each 12" pairs longtime affiliates like Peverelist, RSD, Kahn & Neek and Om Unit with a sharp cast of first-timers, among them Flora Yin-Wong, Re:ni, Sicaria, Yushh and Beatrice M. What emerges is a restless sweep through low-end electronics that flirt with dub, techno, soundsystem pressure and textural detail, in a set shaped by the label's lineage but unbound by nostalgia. Most tracks were written specifically with Tectonic in mind, adding a sense of cohesion to a compilation that prizes forward motion and liminal spaces.

Review: After deciding to sidestep off-kilter bass music bangers in favour of exploring the more experimental side of his musical personality, Jim Coles AKA Om Unit has seen his career get a deserved bump. At the heart of this transformation has been the superb Acid Dub Studies series of albums, which here reaches its third and final instalment. Like its predecessors, Acid Dub Studies III offers an enticing mix of weighty digi-dub 'riddims', deeply psychedelic TB-303 trickery, boisterous dub-leaning bass music grooves, trippy effects aplenty and some of the most immersive sound design around. Yet while there are some genuinely weighty and forthright dancefloor moments - see the rugged 'The Chase', bouncy 'Hungry World' and steppas-powered 'Usurper' - Coles also finds space for warmer and more loved-up excursions, with the gorgeous 'Lost & Found' standing out.

Review: Om Unit's Acid Dub Studies album, an inspired fusion of outer-space ambient sounds, deeply psychedelic TB-303 tweakery and outer-space digi-dub riddims, was for our money one of the standout electronic albums of 2021. This surprise sequel more than lives up to the high bar set by its predecessor, with the Bristol-based producer subtly expanding the project's boundaries (see the borderline Balearic brilliance of 'Camo') while delivering more fusions of ambient techno, acid and digi-dub. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the slow-motion strut of 'Strange Brew', the intergalactic squelch of 'Pursuit', the warming loveliness of 'To The River' and the borderline tropical melodiousness of 'Liberation'.

Review: Jim Coles' decision back in 2010 to implement a swerve in his sonic trajectory away from his hip-hop past as 2tall in favour of a more all-encompassing approach that touches on various strands of bass culture as Om Unit has paid off and then some. Subsequent releases on Exit, Autonomic, Civil Music, Metalheadz and his own Cosmic Bridge imprint have all shown Om Unit eminently capable of tempo shifting productions that appeal to fans of Bass music, Drum & Bass and footwork alike. The latter has been explored further while the Dream Continuum collaboration with Machinedrum on Planet Mu and his Philip D. Kick alias where the link between Chicago's juke heritage and UK Jungle was explored. All this and more is included on Threads, a debut Om Unit LP for Civil Music that deftly collates various strands (or threads) of his production career over the past fifteen years for a cohesive 15 track set that veers through of hip hop, dubstep, jungle and even house.
