Nuances De Nuit Vol 6
Cat: NUIT 006. Rel: 19 Apr 21

Minimal House/Tech House
James Andrew - "Reality Call" (7:16)
Nathan Pinder - "Stutter" (6:56)
The Trip - "Big Trouble" (5:50)
Tip Top - "Control Alt Defeat" (6:39)
Review: Like its five predecessors, the sixth volume in the ongoing Nuances de Nuit series gathers together club-focused cuts from a quartet of producers, all of which could be considered rising stars of the underground tech-house scene. Sometime Subsequent contributor James Andrew kicks off proceedings with 'Reality Call', a bumping, elasticated bounce through spacey and swinging tech-house territory, before Nathan Pinder peppers a driving groove with deep space sounds and mid '90s US garage chords on 'Stutter'. Over on the reverse, The Trip offers up a tough, driving and melodic workout ('Big Trouble'), while Tip Top steals the show via the bleeping dub house hypnotism of 'Control Alt Defeat', where swelling pads, deep sub-bass and delay-laden electronics catch the ear.

UK Garage
Big Buzz
Who Got The Funk?
Check One (Pavilion mix)
Energy Rush
Review: The trip makes no bones about this new EP on Tessellate. It's called UK Business and that's what it is all about. 'Big Buzz' kicks off with some brilliantly dry garage grooves and old school piano stabs while 'Who Got The Funk?' taps into a deeper, darker sound more akin to US garage with plenty of trippy synth details. 'Check One' (Pavilion mix) is a vital UKG cut with all the signifiers - revered stabs, are whistles and more. Last of all comes 'Energy Rush' which is a naughty one to get the gun fingers at the ready. To sum up, super good tools with plenty of character.

Perfect Moderation

Progressive House
A Bit Spooky (5:32)
For The Record (5:50)
Fantazia (5:40)
Boom Operator (6:01)
Review: Moderation is important when it comes to psychedelics use, and so it's just as well that The Trip's latest acid trance EP 'Perfect Moderation' preaches this. The sound is measured to match, with just the right balance of midrange acid and drummy punch to sate all the senses without overstimulating the heightened mind. Things grow piano-ravey on the B, too, for those who prefer their music less entheogenic and more euphoric.

Deep House
Don't Panic (6:13)
Free Your Mind (Fantasy mix) (6:38)
Everybody Needs A Break (5:48)
Stop & Go Station (6:16)
Review: Renowned London party series Tessellate runs a label that is just as well thought of in underground house circles. Taking care of this next cosmic house voyage is The Trip. His sound is steeped in 90s references and especially on 'Don't Panic', old school drum breaks and tough stabs. 'Free Your Mind' (Fantasy mix) is a perfectly spaced-out cut for those post-rush moments when you want to cruise on a breezy groove for days. There is a tribal chunkiness to 'Everybody Needs A Break' as well as new age melodies and 'Stop & Go Station' rounds out with more silky, pumping, warm-as-you-like deep tech grooves.

Wet Your Whistle

Experimental/Electronic
Wet Your Whistle (5:42)
Miss The Point (5:46)
Friend Request (Sax mix) (6:08)
Friend Request (Mbius remix) (7:11)
Review: Having spent the last couple of years establishing the Tessellate label via fine EPs from the likes of Aleksandir and Armless Kid, imprint co-founders Max van Dijk and Oli Hiam have decided the time is right to debut their new production project, The Trip. "Wet Your Whistle" is certainly a confident and quietly impressive debut, with the title track adding a little intergalactic futurism and acid-flecked psychedelia to a retro-futurist deep house groove. They continue to join the dots between the eras on "Miss The Point", where glitchy tech-house style electronics and acid flashes leap above a chunky groove and bold organ stabs. The flipside boasts two versions of "Friend Request": their own bouncy, bass-heavy, skipping and acid-flecked "Sax Mix", and the weighty, off-planet tech-house flex of the Mbius rework.
