Unknown Landscapes Selected II
Cat: POLEGROUP 029. Rel: 06 Jan 15

Techno
Claudio Prc - "Atik"
Woo York - "Farewell Old Friend"
Christian Wunsch - "Beta V 0 5"
Tripeo - "Zebog"
Review: To complement the release of the second edition of Unknown Landscapes, Polegroup once again compile four of the previously unreleased contributions for a must have 12" sampler. With Christian Wunsch at the controls, the mix itself is of course a must have for anyone who classes themselves a fan of modern techno. Equally any techno selectors out there that prefer the vinyl format will want to indulge in the four productions here from Woo York, Tripeo, Claudio PRC and Wunsch himself. Claudio PRC opens proceedings with the stripped back and spacious warehouse boom of "Atik" which contrasts nicely with the brighter tones of "Farewell Old Friend" from Woo York. "Beta 0.5" from Wunsch is scratchy, atmospheric techno at its best and Darko Esser is on fine form with the heavenly acid flutter of Tripeo cut "Zebog".

Illegal Alien XVI Years Vol 5
Illegal Alien XVI Years Vol 5 (yellow marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: IARLTDXVI 5. Rel: 07 Nov 23

Techno
Electric Indigo - "Mod16" (6:14)
DJ Shufflemaster - "Bizarre" (6:49)
Maccaaria - "Vcntdprlsqm" (3:10)
Tripeo - "Pollywog" (5:37)
Unkle Fon - "Violet" (5:09)
Urban Groove - "Aftertouch" (4:33)
Review: Illegal Alien continues its 16th anniversary celebrations here with another volume, the fifth, of its limited edition Illegal Alien XVI series. Across all eight volumes once they are out there will be a total of 44 exclusive tracks and 46 great artists all tracing the evolution of techno over the last decade and a half. This edition is a superb one that fins plenty of innovation in techno, from the paranoid and warped synth energy of DJ Shufflemaster's 'Bizarre' to the tightly woven and intricate synth layers of Urban Groove's 'Aftertouch' via Unkle Fon's dry, stepped back techno funker 'Violet.'

Ben Sims pres Tribology Sampler 5
Cat: MachineSampler 005. Rel: 10 Dec 18

Techno
Marcel Fengler - "Cortex" (5:30)
Alienata - "The 8th Passenger" (6:00)
James Ruskin - "TZR" (5:06)
Tripeo - "Sequoia" (5:50)
Review: It's quite remarkable just how much quality Ben Sims has managed to pack into the Tribology mix and its accompanying series of vinyl samplers. The fifth round shows no signs of going soft as it leads in with the sledgehammer thump of Marcel Fengler's "Cortex", showing the Berghain resident to be on formidable form. Alienata shakes things up with the slick yet sinister electro strains of "The 8th Passenger", and James Ruskin lands some heavy blows with the delirious synth cycles of "TZR". Psyk finishes things off in his signature style, looping up some nervy blips and bleeps around a restrained set of drums for the ultimate in techno hypnotism.

Techno
Stijn Sadee - "Fading Ocean" (3:16)
Rahsaan Nova - "Selfishness" (2:37)
RDS - "Smwajkb" (6:22)
Mark Du Mosch - "In A Flash" (5:39)
Tripeo - "Propaganda" (6:23)
Freek Fabricius - "Astronaut Prinses" (feat Yuna) (5:24)
Review: Nuno Dos Santos' ever-excellent label presents a mini-compilation of intriguing leftfield sonics from a nicely varied cast of characters, leading in with a gorgeous ambient piece from Stijn Sadee. Rahsaan Nova brings a fractured delicacy to "Selfishness" while RDS drops some dynamic needlepoint rhythm science in "Smwajkb". Mark Du Mosch has some suitably strung out jacking business to attend to on "In A Flash", while Tripeo brings the muscular, dystopian electro vibe. Then Freek Fabricius smooths things out with the gorgeous, lilting "Astronaut Prinses". If you're into artfully sculpted electronics across the tempo and style spectrum, this record comes highly recommended.

The Box Vol 5
Cat: THEORY 046. Rel: 05 Feb 14

Techno
Sandrien - "I Left My Girlfriend At The Club"
Tripeo - "Kienokki" (vinyl exclusive)
MDL vs JR - "Belmont"
Craig McWhinney - "Untitled" (re-dub)
Review: A new year for Theory sees Ben Sims curating a fifth and apparently final volume of intermittent 12" series The Box which features contributions from Sandrien, Tripeo, MDL and Craig McWhinney. The Box began in earnest back in 2008 and it's storied releases have included contributions from the likes of Phase, Hiroaki Iizuka, Ritzi Lee, DJT1000 which have ensured the series a reputation for fine tuned techno smashers. You will be familiar with three of the tracks here if you checked Sir Sims recent induction into the fabric mix series, not least the 909 heavy opening track "I Left My Girlfriend At The Club" from Trouw resident Sandrien!

Tuesday Blues (8:11)
Tuesday Blues (HVL Wreckage) (6:00)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Traditionally, Darko Esser's outings as Tripeo have tended towards the hypnotic and trance inducing. It's notable, then, that his latest EP - the first Tripeo 12-inch for 18 months - mixes things up a little. "Food For Thought", for example, fixes melancholic, Convextion style musicality to crunchy, EBM-influenced techno drums, while the fuzzy, dirt-encrusted "Resist" sees the producer give deep electro an angular, lo-fi makeover. "Tuesday Blues", meanwhile, sees him stack layer upon layer of positive electronic melodies atop rubbery, Afro-house influenced techno drums before Bassiani/Horoom resident HVL rounds things off with his skittish, breakbeat-powered revision of "Food For Thought", which sounds like a giddy blast from the past despite the poignant nature of Esser's melodies.

Track 1 (8:08)
Track 2 (7:41)
Review: Amsterdam's Darko Esser returns as Tripeo, usually reserved for his explorations in the more hypnotic end of the techno spectrum. On the Seventh Trip he gives us two killer cuts of just that. "Track 1" features rich and immersive pads and an entrancing melody provided by a high pitched perc or woodblock which all works neatly together to lock you into the groove. On the flip "Track 2' is a much darker affair with rising, doom laden Carl Craig strings and furious tom drums providing most of the groove on this stripped and brooding pre peak time killer.

Anipintiros Reworks Part 1

Techno
Anipintiros #6 (James Ruskin remix)
Anipintiros #5 + #8 (Exium Mash Up remix)
Anipintiros #7 (Mike Parker remix)
Review: Darko Esser's endeavours in purist techno under the Tripeo name have resulted in a series of fine 12"s for the label of the same name, along with a drop on Clone Basement Series, and last year's Anipintiros album. The Dutch artist has pulled together a rather enticing array of his contemporaries to remix tracks from the album for two Anipintiros Reworks 12"s that have both been released this week. Any record featuring the collective production contributions of James Ruskin, Exium, and Mike Parker is likely to elicit yelps of excitement amongst techno fans and all three excel here. Ruskin goes broken, Exium tunnels deep, and Parker turns in a truly hypnotic rendition of "Anipintiros 7".

Anipintiros #7 (Blawan remix)
Anipintiros #5 (Ben Sims remix)
Anipintiros #1 (Cadans remix)
Review: Last year's Anipintiros album was a fine statement from Darko Esser's Tripeo project, expanding on the purist techno approach displayed across a succession of club ready 12"s. The Dutch artist has pulled together a rather enticing array of his contemporaries to remix tracks from the album for two Anipintiros Reworks 12"s that have both been released this week. This second installment pulls material from Esser's Tripeo LP into bracing new directions with Blawan, Ben Sims, and Cadans at the controls. Of the three it's the remix of "Anipintiros #5" from Sims that truly hits the spot, somehow managing to keep a lid on the sonic chaos that unfolds. Wait to hear this one in the club.

Nargy EP

Techno
Kuebiko
Nargy
Qwerty
Review: Since he established the Tripeo project some two years ago, it's remained a revelatory outlet for Darko Esser to showcase a more direct approach to techno. Initially delivered via a glut of 12"s issued on the label of the same name, this year saw Esser demonstrate his software/hardware project was equally suited to the long player format with the excellent Anipinitiros album. Given the tone of Tripeo, it makes perfect sense that Clone should invite Esser to contribute to their Basement series under the guise and if you've heard just one of his previous records under the name the three tracks on Nargy warrant your full attention. The tripped out "Kuebiko" is positively alien in execution and possesses a bassline reminiscent of a deep growling purr from a cat, whilst the title track is also dominated by its bassline. Here Esser's production vintage shines through as the rhythmic elements swing expertly between moments of stripped back minimum and deadly kick attacks. Closing cut "Qwerty" ensures this is a quality 12" through and through, with more alien sonics married to some punishing hi hats.

Untitled #9
Untitled #10
Review: Darko Esser's Tripeo alias is really starting to take off and this will likely be the final 12" before the Dutch producer's debut album as Tripeo, Anipintiros. It's hard not to think Frozen Border, Sandwell District, or even Prologue when listening the A-side on this record, "Untitled #9", while on the flip there's "Untitled #10", a Detroit inspired jumble of strung-out leads, confused computer bleeps and flexed 909 drums.

Track 1
Track 2
Review: Having found his way into the bags of Ben Sims, Norman Nodge and Rolando among others with his first release, Tripeo returns with a second 12" of heavily textured, hypnotic and puristic techno. An alter ego of Holland-based producer Darko Esser, Tripeo eschews the eclecticism of his other project Onionboy for "niches and purism". This is clearly evident on the A-side, where a functional kick drum combines with diamond-like hi-hats and a lone glassy synth to create a purist techno experience that borders on the psychedelic. The B-side is even more sparing but no less striking, with a broken techno rhythm that is interrupted by a trippy mosaic of morphing synths on a 90s tip.

Tripeo - "Echo Cages" (5:06)
Cycloplex - "Hypertension" (7:11)
Cycloplex - "Alarm Activated" (6:20)
Review: Cultivated Electronics presents For the Floor Volume 2, the second instalment in a split EP series that hears something of a fusion between techno and electro, together with a focus on sating the more cerebral dancefloor. Dutch techno pusher Tripeo delivers two techlectro confidence-trickers, 'Bullshit Detector' and 'Echo Cages', deploying a new kind of mysterious, alien sonic technology that makes our mere digital and quantum vanguards look, well, rather shoddy. Meanwhile, Spanish dub techno producer Cycloplex brings up the B, upping the floor's collective blood pressure with 'Hypertension' and simu-stimulating the human stress response with 'Alarm Activated'. An urgent dance EP with mechanistic edges; it probably shouldn't be handled without a hard-hat, goggles and gloves.
