Review: We got a repress of this gem this year thanks to the lovely people at PIAS, a body-pumping amalgamation of synth-pop and electroid deluge. There's plenty or tracks here, but the standouts are definitely "Alice Practice", a cross between Boys Noize and some deranged industrial outfit form the 80s; "Air War" a glitchy, technoid thumper; "1991" their most concrete electro piece and "Black Panther", one of the most moving soundscapesque pieces we know.

Somebody I Used To Know (Bombs Away remix)
Review: Goyte's "Somebody That I Used To Love" got a rather massive remix schedule on this lovely white label followup EP. 4Front proceeds to insert an extra layer of electro madness; The Thin Red Men make an anthem out of it; Kdrew shake things up with a tasty dubstep wobble; even the legendary Tiesto spins a chunky progressive vibe into it, followed by The Fat Rat's old-skool retouch and the Bombs away refix - a second substep wobble monster - BIG package!

Emile Strunz - "Shields"
Last Waltz - "Lovebites"
Review: The World Unknown focus shifts its gaze to the North East here, with their sixth slab of monolithic mid tempo sounds as two of Newcastle's new breed of producers take the helm for sides W & U respectively. While it seems Newcastle hasn't quite engendered a city wide electronic music heritage in a fashion similar to the likes of Bristol, London or Glasgow, it would be foolish to say there aren't interesting emergent sounds bubbling under in the area, as evidenced on this twelve. Take a glance at the biography and Soundcloud of Emile Strunz and it's apparent the producer has been fine tuning a well chosen approach to his craft over some time, culminating in the quite excellent "Shields." A solid mid tempo jacker of a track driven by a liquefied arpeggio, the unhinged vocal chanting that sits deep within adds the requisite idiosyncratic touch we've come to expect from the label run by Blake and Hart. Complementing this is "Lovebites" from the Last Waltz trio who turned out in fine style on Endless Flight this year. If the W side is all about the sleaze, this track is a much brighter production operating at a similar tempo and manages to sneak in some well chosen Akira samples. Buy on sight!

Tell Mummy (original)
Tell Mummy (Richard Dinsdale remix)
Review: German trance and electro veteran, Tomcraft made a comeback on Great Stuff this year, with this gobsmacking belter of a 12". "Tell Mummy" is Tomcraft at his best, where heavy bass drums meet quick-firing bursts of electrolike basslines to create a serious head pouncer! The Richard Dinsdale remix is equally as good if not better, taking a more minimalistic perspective by reducing those previous electro shots to woozing melodies that oscillate uncontrollably. Top quality electro - Juno HQ approved!

Fake Love (original mix)
Fake Love (Villa remix)
Fake Love (The Living Islands Tropical Doom remix)
Fake Love (Chordashian remix)
Review: Blende has been on the London scene for a few years now, building up a following for his classic electro-disco productions. This was his new EP on esteemed Belgian synth-pop label Eskimo, and he's clearly settled right at home. "Fake Love" is excellently produced electro-pop, not unlike a much more polite Uffie, and with some subtle Chic style chords and a big juicy chorus. Villa chop up and re-skewer the original in their remix, and the humorously titled Chordashians provide a pulsating, arpeggiated and melodic version. The Living Islands supply two versions of their Tropical Doom mix (one's a dub), which isn't that doomy but is a pretty lovely Italo-disco excursion.

Sun God (Andrew Weatherall remix)
Sun God (Andrew Weatherall Arp version)
Review: Modular have been supporting Cut Copy ever since their start way back in 2001, but the group seems to have gotten better with each new release - never afraid of showcasing their love for breaky electro and bleepy house music. London, disco legend and socialite Andrew Weatherall takes care of remixing the gorgeous "Sun God", and he does so with that classic Weatherall style and panache. Those synth chords are so bouncy, they'll make you scream with delight! Plus, you even get the Arp version - longer chords and more space-funk from you boy Andy.

New Lands (Falcon remix)
New Lands (live version)
New Lands (A-Trak remix)
New Lands (Sebastian remix)
Review: Voted the most air-guitar inciting track from their album Audio Video Disco, "New Lands" got the treatment from Falcon, A Trak and SebastiAn. While none of the takes require anywhere near as much air instrument frivolity, they all add a lot more dancefloor welly. Falcon goes for the rolling, filtered French funk approach, A Trak opts for an more abrasive, angular electro cut while Sebastian adds some much needed drama by opening with a long half step entry before breaking into the groove mid way. And there's a live version too! Very nice.

We'll Be Coming Back (original extended mix)
We'll Be Coming Back (Michael Woods remix)
We'll Be Coming Back (Jacob Plant remix)
We'll Be Coming Back (Killsonik remix)
Review: Your man Calvin Harris popped up with a pretty slick 12" featuring three remixes of his prodigal "We'll Be Coming Back". The original is a twisted, club-rooted pop track with the voice of Harris himself, of course. Michael Woods gives it a euro-house, ringing them big piano keys like there's no tomorrow! On the flip, Jacob Plant is all about the electro and it's not hard to imagine this track on a sunny day, blasting through endless car radios. Killsonik also dose his thing but it involved the word dub and features some heavy steps - you get the picture!

XTC (original)
XTC (MMM remix)
Review: Soaring electro techno executed with spitfire saw-toothed charm, this really is what Boys Noize does best. The savage riff builds and builds with acid aggression before the classic electro breakbeat drop and spine-surging synths barge their way into the mix with a flavour that isn't too far from an old Kraftwerk technique. For added wallop flip for MMM's remix... Stripped back and riff-heavy, it's even darker than the original. You can't fail with a record like this.

Review: Hot Chip jumped ship yet again, releasing their fifth studio album In Our Heads via the esteemed UK imprint Domino Recordings. The eleven track album was self produced by the band members (along with some behind the boards help from respected studio engineer/producer Mark Ralph) and recorded in London, presumably in the spare time between the various band members other musical commitments that include 2 Bears, New Build and About Group. It stands up alongside their previous long players, with certified pop gems littered among a heady mix of synthy electo and downtempo romantic jams such as the irrepressible "Look At Where We Are".

Review: Erol Alkan's 2005 Bugged Out mix was a gateway release for many, soundtracking the entrance into club land, yet also introducing these virgin ears to more esoteric strains of music via the accompanying Bugged In Selection. Some seven years on, Alkan and the evergreen club brand have revisited the concept with a second edition, and like the inaugural release, the Phantasy Sound boss's ever lasting love for the vinyl format has seen a selection of tracks make the translation to this double vinyl release. Six tracks from the Bugged Out mix appear, with the Italo disco of Amin Peck brushing shoulders with Model 500 and an Obi Blanche edit of the Ron Hardy classic "Sensation", while the Bugged In Selection sees some psyche-folk fare from Buffalo Springfield and Space Lady among other gems.

Pinky's Dream (Trentemoller remix)
Pinky's Dream (Visionquest Velvet Curtain remix)
Review: The opening track from Lynch's mesmerising 2011 album gets the remix treatment from two very well considered producers; both of which have really highlighted the track's strengths in two vastly different ways. Trentemoller's up first and, as you'd expect, takes us head first into a swampy, rocky psychedelic groove that fuzzes and flickers with 50 shades of distortion and funk. Troxler et al's Visionquest retain this textured hypnosis while taking things deeper again thanks to haunted echoed voice samples and a deep, throbbing two note bassline.

Skies Over Cairo (Bullion version)
Review: Sweet psychedelic pop vibes abound as Django Django unleash another fine ditty from their eponymous album. Quite whether they've just misspelt a comet name, or they just love dancing in hard, icy rain we don't know... But we love all versions on this release. The very much in-demand Daniel Avery gets all slo-mo acid on our jackseys while Jealov takes us into some very strange, warped electronica pastures with a Radioheadalicious rub. The band themselves get involved with their own cheeky, not to mention stomping, alternative "Bail Hop" while Bullion completes the package with his own beautiful take that will please all cosmic fans.

Review: Paris's Kitsune label, a happy home for hipster-friendly electro, synth-pop and indie-dance, this year celebrates 10 years in the game. To mark the occasion, they've put together a special edition of the Kitsune Maison compilation series. It's a celebration of what has made Kitsune so popular; a range of fun, synth-heavy tracks from little known, up and coming acts. As usual, highlights are plentiful, from the delightful modern electrofunk vibes of Lorenz Rhode's "Any Kind of Pressure" (featuring a great vocal from Jamie Lidell) and Balearic synth-pop sunshine of Peter & The Magician, to the dewy-eyed goodness of Monde Ideal. Served up on heavyweight vinyl gatefold 2xLP!
