Review: Originally released in April 2017, this is a reissue that reaffirms the album's pivotal role in modern darkwave. Crafted by Sydney-based Marc Dwyer, Chroma pulses with a brooding energy that fuses stark minimalism with unexpected pop leanings. Across its runtime, jagged synths and relentless drum programming frame a series of emotionally charged compositions, each one dissecting states of isolation, longing, and inner turbulence. Far from being just a genre exercise, Chroma pushes the boundaries of synth wave and post-punk, threading glimmers of melody through layers of tension and shadow. Dwyer's delivery is cold and commanding, yet there's an underlying vulnerability in how he constructs each track, always rooted in personal reflection but never static. The production is raw but intentional, giving it an immediacy that still hits with force today. Since its release, Chroma has gained a cult following, inspiring peers in the darker corners of electronic music. With two additional albums and several international tours under his belt, Dwyer has grown into a spectral mainstay of the global goth underground. The long-awaited reissue brings Chroma back into circulation where it belongs. Restored, relevant and just as magnetic as it was eight years ago.

Review: Sydney musician Marc Dwyer (or Marcel Whyler) returns as Buzz Kull for another exploration of EBM, dark synth bits and moody electronics in the vein of touring buddies Boy Harsher, breaking a three year hiatus since preceding single 'Last In The Club'. Marking what, at first brief encounter sounds like the final declaration that those minimal wave days (We Were Lovers) have been fully confined to history in favour of a much more visceral and clubbier tone, dig a little deeper and you realise that's not quite the case.
Indeed, there are still moments that give strong nods to those earlier days wherein darkness didn't necessarily mean harshness, or hardness, but instead things veered close to the glory years of melancholic synth pop. Overall, though, this is made for sweat soaked rooms and intense after dark events, places where red strobes are the only guides to orientate with and creatures of the night exist

Review: Charles Rowell stops off for another release under his Crush Of Souls moniker, hammering yet another gothic sonic nail in the coffin. Recorded at the aptly named Catacomb Soul studios, where he had recently finished recording the antecedent release '(A)Void Love', Rowell's latest LP is dedicated to the French capital city Paris, but we've a sense that *his* Paris isn't *our* Paris. There are of course catacombs in Paris, subjacent to the metropolis' surface romances. With the LP's title punning on French words for "lizard" and "desire", a lustily unnerving synthpop record unfolds, and this is one mood requiring only the slightest touch of grimness to evoke: such as pitchy, drawled vocals on the otherwise glittery and well-rounded 'Cult Of Two', and eighteenth note tenebrae on 'No Soul', serving to bury an otherwise melodic tune in hollow chaos.

Review: Two years on from the release of his brilliant third album "Parallels", dark-wave and synth-wave explorer Hord returns to Avant with an equally impressive sequel. Rich in "Bladerunner"-era Vangelis synth sounds, clandestine grooves, moody chords, distant vocals and druggy arpeggio lines, the album is an altogether more atmospheric, tuneful and ethereal affair than some of the producer's previous outings. The overall mood is bittersweet and melancholic, but that's no bad thing. To our ears, it's the most impressively emotive Hord release to date, and that's reason enough for further exploration.

Review: House of Harm, a post-punk trio from Boston, delivers a remarkable debut LP with Vicious Pastimes. Since forming in 2017, they've gained recognition, opening for bands like She Past Away and Editors. The album kicks off with 'Isolator,' a track blending melancholic electro sounds reminiscent of Ash Code, with an infectious rhythm that beckons you to dance. 'Coming of Age' follows, offering a nostalgic nod to 80s new wave with prominent synths. The album oscillates between bright, catchy tracks like 'Behind You,' 'Catch' and 'Always', and darker, moodier pieces like 'Against the Night' and the haunting title track, 'Vicious Pastimes.' The closing track, 'Control,' with its vibrant rhythm, ties the album back to its energetic start. Vicious Pastimes is a well-structured debut and a cohesive set of nine tracks that feels both introspective and exhilarating. New wave and synth wave in perfect harmony.

Review: Avant! enlist the services of roster-shifting Italo disco project Male Tears to envisage the 'Paradisco', a clever portmanteau that invites us into further speculate on the term as a thought experiment. Indeed, a disco thrown in paradise is the obvious imago; less obvious is the observation of a very real zeigeist; that all discotheques today occur in a sort of para-situation, in a space that is a cut above normalcy, thrown in discrete fantasy spaces. Male Tears know this all too well, with such escapist flights of fancy as 'Sex On Drugs', 'Regret 4 Nothing' and 'He Wants Everything' eliciting surreal extremes of emotion, with their reverb-laden voxsynth patches, insouciant masc-femme vocal switches, and longing hooks reminiscent of Talk Talk or Liquid Sky.

Review: The debut full-length from French synth-punk outfit No Filter is easily the most literal interpretation of the term to come around in a minute. While any punk-oriented group with a synthesizer can easily claim the subgenre as their own, the material on Sans Filtre combines two of the most disparate subsets that fall under these banners, fusing authentic 80's indebted coldwave with Oi! punk angst, making for the type of anthems that could unify goths and skinheads in the most bizarre looking mosh pit this side of Voiron. Think Oppenheimer Analysis meets The 4 Skins or Blitz and you'll begin to scratch the surface of this gloomy, aggy cold-Oi!/Oi!-wave opus.

Horror Vacui, Sheer Mag, Torso, Terremoto and Crimson Scarlet team up with vocalist Chelsey Crowley and synthesists Andrea Mantione and Giacomo Zatti for one hell of a retro-tinged electro-pop adventure. New Earth is the sound of Adventures In Babysitting running into The Goonies celebrating their 21st birthday at Tech Noir, if that's enough 1980s movie references to get the point across. It's a snare topped, high energy rush of a record that makes no apologies for itself. And nor should it.
Apparently the contents here were originally written for the band's debut EP, Exposure, and with a male voice in mind. Listening back to the arrangements it became clear that there was a huge amount of Italo disco potential, and therefore Crowley was drafted to realise that. We're incredibly glad she was, as this is really something very special indeed.
