Painting Silhouettes
Review: It's been 13 years since Will Holland delivered his eclectic, electronica-heavy debut album under the now-familiar Quantic alias. In that time, he's turned into something of a globetrotting fusionist, variously turning his hand to heavy revivalist funk, Cuban beats, cumbia and sweet downtempo grooves. On Magnetica, his ninth album as Quantic, he draws together all of these strands, delivering a dub-heavy set that does a brilliant job in showcasing the sheer breadth and diversity of his influences. With plenty of Latin instrumentation, a huge cast list of guests and nods to early influences such as hip-hop, reggae, electronica and folk, it feels like the culmination of a thrilling, 13-year journey. As a result, it's arguably his strongest set for some time.

Review: A sight to cheer for any regular Tru Thoughts follower - a brand new collaboration between veteran producer Will "Quantic" Holland (now bearded and looking very much like a muso version of Eric Cantona) and regular chanteuse Alice Russell. Unlike many of their previous combined outings, Look Around The Corner largely eschews hard-boiled funk and heavy soul in favour of a looser, folksier, more organic sound clearly inspired by Rotary Connection (and in particular the production of Charles Stepney). With Quantic's Cuban backing band, Combo Barbaro, offering solid backing, and Holland himself in the control room, it's an expansive, adventurous and finely crafted album that boasts far more hits than misses.

Review: Will "Quantic" Holland has enjoyed a long love affair with the music of Colombia, establishing various live acts that pay tribute to the steamy, sweat-soaked sounds of the South American nation. His latest project sees him join forces with singer/songwriter India Gongora to deliver a set inspired by the "Pacific music" variant of Colombian dance culture. The result is a set of songs that sound distinctively Colombian, with tropical guitars, indigenous instrumentation and Gongora's wonderfully laidback vocals being joined by rhythms, bassline and electronics that bring a traditional style bang up to date. The double vinyl set also includes a few forays into more Caribbean territory, including the brilliant "Dub Del Pacifico (Version)".

Review: 'The Land Of Freedom' is a stunning jazz album on Geneon by Japanese 4 piece band Quasimode.
Quasimode formed in 2002 since which time they have already gained strong support in their native land. They have had releases on Freestyle Records, Inpartment and Columbia and now thanks to Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv they will also get a chance to do their thing on the European and global scene. With a mixed club and Latin feel they deliver all their music live and so represent a new breed of jazz bands who have gained a strong following with DJs and on the club circuit while all the time still thrilling live audiences.

Review: Vampi Soul brings you 'So Far Away, So Close'. Founded after the 'New Jazz Collective' movement in Argentina in the late 60's, Quinteplus experimented with Folk genres in a Jazz key. This set contains the only studio album they ever released (in 1972) and a complete live set from the same year.
