Only You

Donnoya Drake - "Only You" (4:05)
Woodfield Rd Allstars - "Shake Up The Dance" (2:52)
Review: The Original Gravity label is at it once again, combing through hidden pockets to serve up the finest nuggets from bygone days. The label is on a shuffling reggae tip this time around, with their latest single headed up by Lonnoya Drake singing a snappy version of the sentimental soul classic, 'Only You'. It's infectious dancefloor magic with heart to match its heat, setting up nicely for the heads-down get-down of 'Shake Up The Dance' by Woodfield Road All Stars. This sharp-shooting outfit lay down a killer instrumental with a nagging skank and some heavy-vibing organ lines sure to get the dance juiced up good and proper.

Woodfield Road Allstars - "Muhammad Ali" (2:33)
The Regulators - "Race Track" (2:31)
Review: Original Gravity have been hard at work putting together a third volume in their reggae Dynamite series. This one lines up another belting 45 featuring tunes from The Regulators - twice - Brentford Rd Soul Rebels and Woodfield Rd Allstars. All of the tunes have booming bass warmth and vintage organ riffs that just transport you to a time and a place, even if you didn't live it yourself. The drums rumble on like a fat bottomed elephant and the horns take a majestic lead. These are atmospheric tunes ready and waiting to get people moving and our standout is Woodfield Road Allstars' tribute to boxing legend Muhammed Ali.

Woodfield Rd Allstars - "Soul Flute" (2:53)
Prince Dolly - "Why Dub Why?" (2:30)
Review: Original Gravity is run by label owner Neil Anderson, who has a tireless work ethic and superb devotion to ska, reggae, and everything in between. His love of boss rhythms comes to the fore once more here with new tunes from three pseudonyms - The Regulators, Woodfield Road Allstars and Prince Dolly - all of whom, in actual fact, are him. Regulators cut 'Why Why Why' opens up with a heavy bottom end, "Coast to Coast: has a big organ led groove and 'Why Dub Why' reworks the opening tune into a rocksteady roller. Essential repress this, do not sleep.

Soul Brothers Six - "I'll Be Loving You" (2:18)
Willie Tee - "Walkin' Up A One Way Street" (2:44)
Review: Outta Sight's latest monthly rare soul missive contains hard-to-find and overlooked classics from "hard-hitting" New Jersey vocal group Soul Brothers Six and New Orleans Rhythm and Blues man Willie Tee. It's the former's wonderfully sweet and loose "I'll Be Loving You" (first released in 1966, fact fans) that takes pride of place on the A-side, serving up a lightly sauteed soul take on the rhythm and blues template. Willie Tee's 1967 jam "Walking Up A One Way Street", a summery affair blessed with a superb horn section, leisurely groove and brilliant lead vocal from the man himself, can be found on the B-side.

An Extraordinary Dream (3:07)
An Extraordinary Dream (instrumental) (2:59)
Review: Long-lost Tidewater soul classic 'An Extraordinary Dream' gets a welcome reissue here by Symphonical with input from the last surviving band member Larry Gray. This timeless love song was recorded in 1969 at Charlie McClendon Studios and was the first of two singles by Gray and his group, The Soul Seekers, which was made up of five Huntington High alumni who helped shape the region's musical scene. Led by Gray who was fresh from five years at Stax Records with Otis Redding, the group backed numerous touring acts and this single was produced under Wilson Harrell's Check Productions. It's a lovably forlorn and low-slung soul sound with heavy-hearted melodies, horns and aching vocals.

Review: There are reissues and there are REISSUES!! Originals have been passed around for well over $1000 in recent times and, due to the lack of original master tapes, no one ever dreamt of a reissue! Well here is it; the two tracks from the original 1973 Selector Sound 45" and Gloria and Walter Whisenhunt's Selector Sound collaboration "Love Is A Hurting Thing". All three sounding pristine. All three rich in early disco and rich soul sentiment. One per customer, this one demands serious attention.

First up on this limited 7" is The Webs with 'It's So Hard To Break A Habit', a slow and sentimental sound with aching v vocal harmonies and gentle rhythms laced with melancholic melodies. Review: UK based production team Weekend Sun is made up of Phil Smith and Chris Tarn. Here their loose and inviting 'Hoochie Coo Strut' tune gets presented on a limited edition 12" with a pair of killer mixes. The original is all deep cut, slow motion disco grooves, spangly guitar riffs and big horns. It is a cacophony of sound that gets dialled right back by Al Kent. His take is a low slung groover with jazzy chords given plenty fo room to breath and neat little riffs filing in the spaces beyond. Andy Smith Reach Up Disco Wonderland remix is a big one for full floors.

Review: A unique slice of classic library music flies off the shelf. These four tracks were lifted from the classic library music series known only as 'Sounds Music Album Volume 18', and were made by the library maestro Klaus Weiss, the former jazz drummer who later turned to the trade after falling in with German music publisher Ring Musik. An eerie uncanniness cuts across these instrumentals, as Weiss' drumming provides steady boppage to serene yet dubious backings of strings and synth.

La Pietra (2:00)
Review: Revivalist library funk specialists Whatitdo Archive Group (a project helmed by producer, bassist and drummer Alex Korostinsky) impressed with their 2020 debut on LRK Records. Here they transfer to Record Kicks with more vintage-sounding heaviness. The killer cut is undoubtedly A-side 'The Return of Beaumont Jenkins', which features some dazzling keys-work from guest musician Alex Alessandroni alongside plucked strings, swelling orchestration and swinging sixties style soundtrack funk grooves. Flipside 'La Pietra' has got a 'Spaghetti Western' kind of vibe, with chiming, Morricone-style melodies atop atmospheric guitars and laidback drums.

Review: Broc Recordz is back after the impressive last outing from Janko Nilovic & The Soul Surfers with another brilliant release and this time it comes from the legendary JJ Whitefield who you might know from The Poets of Rhythm, Karl Hector or Embryo, and Igor Zhukovsky from The Soul Surfers. This tidy 7" kicks off with pure psyched-out funk magic that will take you to a state of ecstasy. It's doused in way way and fuzz and has loud and proud drums. 'Munich Bells' on the flip is a library-psych-breaks killer with a drive-in bassline and tons of reverb.

Review: Given that Wild Cherry's 'Play That Funky Music' and Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' are both amongst the most anthemic disco-era funk cuts around, many may see these new remixes from Marco Fratty as being a bit unnecessary. Yet while neither track needed tampering with, the Italian producer has done a terrific job in updating them. His full vocal versions of both tracks make great use of the original instrumentation and vocals, effectively extending them - re-edit style - while adding marginally tougher new beats that never overwhelm the mix. Even better though are the two dub mixes, which use familiar sonic tropes - delay-laden vocal snippets, Refkex style instrumental builds and so on - to help turn both tracks into 21st century dub disco epics. A surprise triumph!

The Dealer (3:38)
Review: Pure wisdom from Trinidad & Tobago's Wild Fire. Taken from their 1970 album - the first after changing from The Sparks - "Check It Out" is an incredibly raw slice of earthy folk soul with its tribal percussion and gutsy conscious spoken word. "The Dealer" looks north for a more of a New York feel to the guitars and narrative while remaining wholly island in its looseness and warmth. Timeless in both vibe and sentiment and remastered with finesse, Black Pearl have uncovered some serious magic here.

Give It All I Got (3:15)
Do You Understand (3:20)
Review: Dave Welding's Soul Junction label is back with another limited edition 45rpm that keeps up the fine run of recent form. These two gems are the work of the late great Willie Williams, a blind singer from Chicago who was discovered performing in the Windy City's local clubs. He was signed to ABC records in 1966 and put out only a couple of other well received singles. 'Give It All I Got' is a beautiful piece with raw drum work and lush vocal backing harmonies next to a gentle piano line. It is stirring stuff while the flips-side 'Do You Understand' is more upbeat with its funky riffs, more great backing vocals and a rolling beat that locks you in.

Review: First featured on the 2014 album I Hope You'll Be Very Unhappy Without Me, 'Hit 'Em Like Ali' is one of the most infectious, energetic and riotous tracks in the slowly growing catalogue of Australian artist Chelsea Wilson. Something of an unheralded modern deep funk classic, it makes perfect sense that Spasibo Records has decided to give it a much-deserved single release. The track was co-produced by Cookin' On 3 Burners member Jake Mason and the heavyweight instrumental backing track - which is available for the first time on the flip - features many of Melbourne's finest funk musicians. The breakbeats are blistering, the horns heavy, the guitars flanged and the bass weighty; what's not to like?

You Like To Dance (4:57)
Review: It's 20 up for Positive Pay For Japan, who have got a wealth of funky 7"s out this month alone. It comes from Milton Wright, a big presence on the Miami soul scene throughout the 1970s. He was one of the many siblings in the Wright family alongside Betty, Phillip, Charles and Jeanette and also served as a justice on the Boston Municipal Court from 1998 to 2004. This 45 serves up 'Let's Take A Break,' a slow motion and deeply funky number with poignant bass notes and Milton's stylish vocals up top next to plenty of big horns. The party picks up with 'You Like To Dance,' a brighter tune with a positive vibration.

(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love (3:58)
Review: With roots as a backing singer for Stevie Wonder, Wycoff went on to become a soul ambassador throughout the early 80s. This 1982 reissue is one of the best examples of his silky, heartfelt delivery... "Looking Up To You" is a dynamic love song where traces of big 70s production build and build throughout. "(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love", meanwhile, was only ever released as a B-side. Its 80s production counter the dramatics of the A-side with cool synthetic perfection. Reissues don't get much broader in production or sweeter in sound than this.

The group was formed by Discos Fuentes as a way of developing an African and Caribbean sound that would be attractive to the Costen?o Colombian market. Review: REPRESS ALERT: Arriving at their fourth release, Emotional Rescue's knowledge of forgotten musical gems and their commitment to give them the chance of wider appreciation they fully deserve cannot be in question! After digging out that Bob Chance classic, the focus switches to something of an equally balearic nature with the release of Jaki Whitren & John Cartwright's lost folk rock album International Times. Originally released as a private press on the obscure French label Living Records back in 1983, this eight track album is filled with dusty soul nuggets which are given extra life by the silky vocal stylings of Whitren - formerly a backing singer for Alan Parson. Opening track "Stay Cool" sounds quite ahead of it's time, whilst there are some true dancefloor gems for the more adventurous DJs out there, such as the title track and the laid back bump of "Go With The Flow."

Review: Stevie Wonder's seminal The Jazz Soul Of Little Stevie album very much unveiled the budding talent of a musical prodigy. Released in 1962, this instrumental collection showcases Wonder's early mastery of jazz-infused melodies at the tender age of just 12 years old. With his harmonica prowess and soulful organ touches frost and centre, Wonder paints vivid tracks that belie his youth. Pieces like 'Fingertips' and 'Square' exude a playful energy, while 'Soul Bongo' delves into rhythmic complexity. Despite its brevity, the album foreshadows Wonder's illustrious career and undeniably set the stage for his future triumphs on Motown and beyond. It's a captivating glimpse into the early genius of a music icon.
