Hi Baby Out
Cat: BPR 002SP. Rel: 13 Dec 16

Funk/Reissues
Hi Baby Out (3:37)
War (2:53)
Review: Rare German funk from '78, Black Pearl have unearthed something incredible here. "Hi Baby Out" only ever saw private press, which is crazy considering how insanely funky it is. Hitting with a Nigerian-style funk with big backing vocals, highlife guitars and far-away horns, it's an instant call to the dancefloor. "War", meanwhile, has never before been released and was found by chance on its original master tapes. Listen to the juicy slap-bass and swinging drums and you'll agree it's beyond crazy that this didn't receive a release - it's criminal. Look up Apotheke's story, too, if you have time - it's fascinating.

Review: Killer outstanding & authentic disco production by the famous DJ, producer & remixer head behind Balearic Gabba Sound System Enzo Elia and longtime experienced producer, sound-nerd & engineer Roskow Kretschmann. Somebody called it "disco for grown-ups" and it's a perfect explaination, cause this could be easily dropped back in the days by Disco Loft DJ-legends like Ron Hardy. The Black Pearl Crew is very proud to present these authentic vintage sound styled disco pearls to the disco lovers & community worldwide !

Alles Paletti
Alles Paletti (hand-stamped 12")

Disco/Re-Edits
Enzo Elia - "Alles Paletti!" (6:45)
Apotheke - "War" (Enzo Elia Calabro edit) (7:34)
Review: Berlin's excellent Black Pearl Records returns with its unsurprisingly charismatic vintage flavours, this time thanks to an original from Enzo Elia and a rework of 1970's stoners Apotheke. Elia's "Alles Paletti!" is the perfect, swinging disco bomb that is pretty much composed of one single loop; the trick here is that our man has found the code to the secret 4 bar formula...and what an addictive groove it is! Elia reworks Apotheke's "War" on the B-side, and the result is an even more dance-friendly version of the original cut from the 70's - what an absolute stunner. A highly recommended EP.

K&M Projekt - "Barentraume" (4:32)
Christoph Kreutzer - "Sie Hat Das, Was Dir Fehlt" (3:28)
Modyvation - "Do Whatcha Want" (3:29)
Mudegg - "Disco Delight" (19:55)
Review: German disco might be most closely associated with Boney M but in fact it offers so much more. The scene was initially influenced by the influx of American soldiers camped in the county during the 70s. They listened to far away radio sounds from the US which were always steeped in disco and the locals caught on. Black Pearl Records now showcase how the scene has evolved over the years: and t is vibrant and inventive with its own distinctive characteristics if this i anything to go by. This collection has a cross-section of sounds that go from the classic 70s disco years to cosmic, NDW, synth pop and more. Disco De:Light

Luten: Experiment Mit Jazz Nr 1
Luten (3:25)
Lehadima (2:43)
Silberner Lowe (2:36)
Gun-jah (3:28)
Review: GDR jazz pioneer Luten, aka Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, leads this fantastic ensemble on a wonderful document of German jazz put together by the peerless Black Pearl label. Packing four pieces onto a 7" is no mean feat, but these tracks hit hard and cover a lot of ground in a relatively short run time. "Luten" is a restless, relentlessly moving firecracker of a tune that leans heavy on the brass, while "Lehadima" revels in wild peaks and troughs. "Silberner Lowe" is a smoother affair in comparison, and "Gun-jah" plays with light and shade in adventurous, exotic ways. Lunter's playing is the star of the show, but really this is a widescreen take on jazz with a heavy-hitting, big band flavour.

Let's Get It Together

Let's Get It Together (6:12)
Let's Get It Together (dub) (6:20)
Review: Trinidadian legend Winston Bailey aka Shadow has been on our charts a lot over the last year or so, with his infamous 1984 LP Sweet Sweet Dreams being reissued left, right and centre, and it's no surprise given the fact that the killer "Let's Get It Together" features all up in that. What a timeless gem. So much so that Germany's Black Pearl has decided to put it onto 7" format, along with a majestic dub cut that we hadn't heard before...and that means more beastly synths, machine-drum badness, and Shadow's iconic vocals.

Review: A long lost cosmic jazz funk document from Zagreb's underground funk scene. Spektar's only official album was a self-titled largely vocal-led affair in 74, but behind the scenes the band was jamming and creating fusions that were recorded but never released. Until now... From the organ-led jazz fire of "Lisinski III" to the brushed drum shuffle and sleazy bass of "Subiceva IV" to the classic Hammond-smashing opening salvo, it's crazy that it's taken 40 years for this album to see the light of day... Let's make up for lost time.

Kunstdisco Seoul: Night Falls

Night Falls (8:07)
Night Falls (First Touch remix) (7:05)
Night Falls (Mudegg Machine mix) (5:41)
Night Falls (Mudegg Alpha Wave mix) (6:10)
Review: In 1988, German siblings Ernst and Hans-Peter Stroer joined forces with Howard Fine and Nadeen Holloway to produce Kunstdisco Seoul, an EP of synth-pop/neo-classical/Euro-house fusion. "Night Falls", a cheery tribute to mid-to-late '80s Prince, was arguably the EP's strongest moment. Here, it gets the reissue treatment, with the tasty original version being joined by a trio of fresh remixes. Mudegg serves up two interpretations: the jaunty electrofunk-goes-synth-pop flex of the "Machine Mix" and the Balearic nu-disco inspired "Alpha Wave Mix". While these are both fine, the version that really stands out comes from German boogie revivalists First Touch. Their take - an authentic tribute to glistening NYC synth-boogie complete with vintage synthesizers and clattering drum machines - is almost worth the entrance money on its own.

Review: When Black Pearl offered up the first "Bosporus Bridges" compilation in 2005, few others were championing the distinctively exotic sounds of Turkish psych, funk, jazz and beat music. Given that interest has risen in these sounds in recent times, it feels fitting that the label has decided to offer up volume three in the ongoing series. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the mazy solos, Blaxploitation breaks and suspenseful orchestration of Seyyal Taner's "Sarmas Dolas", and the Hammond-heavy psych-funk of "Nisan Sakasi" by Lili Ivanova Ve Durul Gence, to the Peter Green style guitar solos of Cengiz Coskuner and the heady psychedelic pop of Donusum and Halit Kakinc.

Check It Out (3:26)
The Dealer (3:38)
Review: Pure wisdom from Trinidad & Tobago's Wild Fire. Taken from their 1970 album - the first after changing from The Sparks - "Check It Out" is an incredibly raw slice of earthy folk soul with its tribal percussion and gutsy conscious spoken word. "The Dealer" looks north for a more of a New York feel to the guitars and narrative while remaining wholly island in its looseness and warmth. Timeless in both vibe and sentiment and remastered with finesse, Black Pearl have uncovered some serious magic here.
