Review: Despite gaining acclaim for his debut 12", "Carmella", in 2009, new Map.ache material from Jan Barich has been strangely thin on the ground over the last few years. Ulfo, his debut album, has clearly been a labour of love. In many ways, you can tell. Barich has a way with melody that marks him out from many of his German peers. He also seems more concerned with creating ear-pleasing compositions than pandering to dancefloors. It's a bold move, in many respects, but one that ensures impressive results. Blending bubbling electronic rhythms with intricate synth work, warm chords and positive, Metro Area-ish atmospheres, Ulfo evokes hazy memories of more innocent times.
