Review: Since releasing his fine debut album Offseason Traveller in 2013, Aera releases have been sporadic at best. Although there have been odd singles here and there (including a brilliant 2017 out on Hivern Discs), fans have been made to wait for this long-promised sophomore set. Aera (AKA Aleph Music founder Ralf Schmidt) claims it's his most personal and coherent work yet, and we tend to agree. Largely unconcerned with making people dance, the album offers up a melodious, far-sighted and largely ear-pleasing blend of ambient, electronica and IDM cuts variously inspired by new age, kosmiche and krautrock. Of course, there are hints of the producer's usual left-of-centre take on house and techno throughout, but it's the uncluttered beauty of the album's more downtempo tracks that makes the biggest impression.

Review: Some six years into his career, Neil "Mano Le Tough" Mannion is showing distinct signs of artistic development. While Trails, his sophomore set, follows a similar formula to its' 2013 predecessor, Changing Days, it's a much more intricate, experimental and effervescent affair that makes great use of live instrumentation and his own impassioned vocals. So, while there are nods towards smoky, eyes-closed deep house - see "Half Closed Eyes", "I See Myself In You" and the sparkling "Sometimes Lost" - the album is dominated by downtempo electronica compositions. These variously draw on the drowsy bliss of James Blake, post-dubstep melancholia, post-rock/electronica fusion, and the hazy world of Balearica, suggesting that Mannion is making the best of his growing confidence.

Review: Having released a wonderful retrospective of the defunct Frankfurt label Brontosaurus across multiple formats last month, Permanent Vacation sneak out a little 12" shaped treat in the shape of this plate featuring tracks not featured on the Double LP edition. For the uninitiated, Brontosaurus was founded in 2006 by Thomas Sabrowsky, Phillip Lauer and Arto Mwambe's Christian BeiBwenger and is fondly remembered as the precursor to current Frankfurt institution Live At Robert Johnson. These addendum 12" features two sought after vinyl must haves from Arto Mwambe in "Noh Ngamebo" and "BTWO" plus the slow disco chugger and Prins Thomas favourite "Ray Rider" by The Exile Missile.

Review: When quizzed about his debut full-length before a Juno Plus party last year, John Talabot paused for a minute. "It's not really house, more electronica - like a proper album," he finally remarked. It's an apt description. Fin is clearly rooted in house - and the kind of melody-driven, atmospheric tackle that the Barcelona-based producer excels at - but it's certainly not a dancefloor-focused set. There are off-kilter downtempo moments, slo-mo compositions and twisted beatscapes that recall the impossible-to-pigeonhole antics of Hyetal (circa "Broadcast"), Sepalcure and Instra:mental. Then there's closer "So Will Be Now" (one of two collaborations with Pional), a near-genius chunk of future garage/deep acid house fusion that's so beautiful it almost hurts. As transformations go, Fin is stunning.

Review: Back in 2006, Benjamin Frohlich and Tom Bioly decided to launch their Permanent Vacation label with a compilation named in honour of their new imprint. 12 years on, the series is still going strong, with this fifth volume offering up 12 tasty, previously unheard cuts. As usual, there's plenty of variety on show, from the breezy Balearic bliss of Beesmunt Soundsystem's "Yayang" and the dub disco sleaziness of Sascha Funke's "Kaleidoskop", to the throbbing, head-in-the-clouds electro-disco of Julian Stetter's "Pearl" and the saucer-eyed Italo-disco revivalism of "Angelika" by Perel. And that's just tracks one to four. Elsewhere, highlights include the Balearic techno/house fusion of Personal Message, the cinematic grooves of Maajo and Chinaski's hypnotizing mid-tempo chug and spiraling synthesziers.

Review: Nigh on two years have passed since the Munich maestros provided us with a full screen, full length collection of freshness. But here we finally are, wallowing in the balmy tide of Suzanne Kraft's Balearic rippler "Tides", strutting to the glistening hypnotica and Royksoppisms of Alex Burkat's "Brooklyn Bridge", hip-swinging and playing mean air pipes to Young Marco's "Dreamless" and melting into a dubby 10CC-style mess to Prins Emanuel's "Ivys Boogie". Now a decade deep into their distinctively deep and delectably cosmic adventure, Permanent Vacation seldom disappoint.

Review: Munich institution Permanent Vacation is concrete proof that the best record labels evolve over time. Where once bosses Benjamin Frohlich and Tom Bioly were happy to release lazy Balearica and cosmic, disco-fired gems, in recent years they've broadened their horizons further and headed to the dancefloor via singles and EPs that draw much more heavily on contemporary European deep house. The fine music contained on this sixth label retrospective supports this view, flitting between dreamy, eyes-closed Balearic house (Fort Romeau's superb remix of Kauf), low-slung Norse disco (Prins Thomas remixing Lauer), hypnotic Berlin style tech-house (Lake People), heavy percussion jams (Gerd Janson's Conga remix of John Talabot), mind-altering ethno-grooves (Red Axes) and John Carpenter style synth soundtrack fare (Marvin & Guy).

Review: The epic adventures of Captain Starlight continue as Cali soul men Woolfy Vs Projections deliver their third album. Following from where "The Return Of Love" left us in 2012, it's a bounty of Balearica rich in tempo fusions, shimmering instrumentation and cosmic textures. From the Foalsy gallops of "My Room" to the Thievery Corp style dub funk of "Set It Up" via the heavier, leaner, 2020 Soundsystem style late night bell ringing of "Tanglers", each cut works as a whole new chapter while creating a much larger picture as it develops. Like all the best albums should. Perfect for homes and dancefloors alike.
