Open Space EP
Cat: SECRET 011. Rel: 06 Sep 13

Techno
Open Space
Smoke
Missing
Review: Following transmissions for Delsin and Animal Farm, the hurried beats of Bleak make their way to London's Secretsundaze label, beginning with the filtered and soft edged "Open Space". Reverb and delay adds wispy breathes of cool emotion to the cosmic pads and space gurgles of "Smoke", while the sound design of "Missing" is much drier than the rest of the EP, the Swede washes the track with dripping licks of acid so sour it'll make your toes curl.

Opticamente Avanzando (11:53)
OP.AV (6:26)
Planos De Ausencia (Casualidad mix) (3:59)
Review: After the outstanding Devious EP from the label bosses, Secretsundaze is back with a new 12" from emergent Dominican artist Boundary. Once again, there's a vitality and urgency to the tracks the label is pushing, finding in Boundary a thread of inventive techno that sounds fresh and authentic at the same time. 'Opticamente Avanzando' surges with a Detroit grittiness, ethereal pad swoops and a sizzling carnival atmosphere, stitched together in a masterful, dense mix perfect for peak time transcendence. 'OP.AV' takes things deeper, letting a cascade of synth motifs fall around a nagging, break-embellished rhythm section. 'Planas De Ausencia (Causalidad Mix)' is a striking departure into fractured ambient electronica, where the beats fall apart and slide into new grooves around blissful swathes of melancholy melody. Classy stuff, which should appeal to lovers of vintage techno as well as those craving something new.

Devious EP
Devious EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SECRET 027. Rel: 20 Jul 20

Deep House
Devious (8:07)
Over The Edge (7:01)
Drifting  (4:40)
Review: Giles Smith and James Priestley are back under their Secretsundaze moniker for some top-shelf machine wranglings. There's a nervy edge to "Devious", which creates a dense sound using gnarly monosynth bass, spacious reverbed bleeps and brittle drums. "Over The Edge" heads outwards rather than inwards with rousing vocal loops colliding with plush melodic phrases and another knotty beat, while "Drifting" plays on classic 90s downtempo techno through a fog of lo-fi charm. You can sense the grit and invention that's been rubbed into these tracks, making them reach beyond straightforward club music to something altogether more intriguing.

Stand Up EP
Stand Up EP (140 gram vinyl 12")

Deep House
Mezcal (6:09)
Stand Up (7:20)
Testing (8:07)
Review: Giles Smith and James Priestley have left an indelible mark on house and techno culture in the UK, not least thanks to their fabled Secretsundaze parties. These days they're taking that iconic stamp into the studio, and following up on strong turns for Mule Musiq and Phonica last year they're finally dropping a full length EP on their own label. The quality is as high as you would expect, from spicy, snarling fire starter "Mezcal" to the transcendental swirl of "Stand Up". On the B side, "Testing" takes things a little deeper with a heady stomp and a tricky disposition that will satisfy all the selectors.

Super Cool EP
Super Cool EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SECRET 029. Rel: 11 Jan 21

Minimal House/Tech House
Sem Crew (5:32)
Grillz  (4:42)
Front Door (4:24)
Love U (4:12)
Review: The journey of intrigue on Secretsundaze continues unabated as they welcome Lisbon-born, London-based producer Silvestre to the label. He'd previously dropped bombs on Meda Fury, Diskotopia and Padre Himalaya, and now he's bringing an unconventional flair to the Sundaze crew in line with the ear-snagging leftfield club fare they've been tapping into of late. Cheeky samples, analogue synth wriggles and snagging breaks are all par for the course, but more crucially there's a warm and gritty flavour to all the tracks that makes them stand out from so many pristine modern mixdowns. Classy, inventive stuff from a talented producer on the rise.

Silvestre Is Boss EP (D.K. mix)
Cat: SECRET 026. Rel: 21 Oct 19

Deep House
Jumping Intro (2:06)
Lights (4:31)
Fuego (3:40)
Paying The Rent (4:25)
Fuego (D.K. remix) (5:09)
Back To Hometown (5:04)
Review: Lisbon-born, London-based producer Silvestre came to light on Disktopia before starting up the Padre Himalaya label to house his unconventional chuggers. This release for Secretsundaze finds him exploring his sound in greater detail, folding in a certain amount UK rave energy amongst other more esoteric motifs. The results are spellbinding, from the twilight marvels of "Lights" to the slow breakbeat chops and delirious harp trills of "Fuego". At times the ideas have a scuffed mixtape quality to them, which only adds to the charm. D.K. is on hand to deliver a remix for the broader needs of the dancefloor, although he wisely keeps the beguiling qualities of "Fuego" intact as he nudges it closer to the party.
