Sunless Sky (6:49)
Cosmic Energy (8:10)
Stargate (7:31)
Prophecy (7:24)
Review: Jungle of this calibre is becoming an increasing rarity nowadays, but perhaps that sense of scarcity is exactly what makes this new EP from ASC, 'Confluence Of Light', exciting. Like the cold precision of the breaks and Reeses that make this one up, it's pure economics. From the very beginning of opener 'Sunless Sky', jungle riffage is effortlessly embedded in nighttime bass, while Cetacean sound effects echo and twirl about the midrange. The abyssal sonic trend continues through nightcalls 'Cosmic Energy', 'Stargate' and 'Prophecy'. Likening drum n' bass to the cosmos, as it should be, this is a monumentally spaced-out release.

The Arcane (7:41)
State Of Mind (6:30)
Force Majeure (7:45)
Threeform (6:20)
Review: One of the architects behind the little-known Autonomic Drum n Bass style, British producer James Clements returns once again with another EP intersection of synths, ambience and drum n bass elements. Don't be fooled by the short 4 track run, the runtime is half an hour of relaxed bangers. 'State of Mind' sounds ripped straight from a PS2 pause screen with its jungle breaks infused with ambient droning and deep 808s, making the 7 minutes feel like it flies by as sound washes over your head. This is the first release of many on Clements' new label Spatial, in a move to bring back the underappreciated atmospheric drum n bass scene (or what snobby journalists once called 'Intelligent Drum n Bass', to the chagrin of pretty much everybody who heard the term). In Clement's own words "Hope you're all as excited about bringing back this form of music as I am".

Hindsight (7:22)
Review: ASC is an absolute don whether crafting ambient or drum & bass or whatever in between. Here he is on the Spatial label which was set up with a strict ethos and devotion to mid-90s vibes that take in breakbeats, luscious pads, heavy 808 bass and a 160 bpm tempo. ASC opens the EP with a tried and tested amen banger with classic chop and splice techniques. 'Nectar' is then dark and tense yet brilliantly alluring and 'Flashback' takes you back to the heart of a strobe-lit and gritty dance floor in the 90s. The icing on the cake is 'Hindsight' with its spaced-out sounds and jittery cymbals locking you in for the thrilling ride.

Essence (7:22)
Silent Running (7:26)
Review: Arguably one of the most prolific electronic musicians active today, drum n' bass cosmonaut ASC (James Clements) is back with a new deep-space venture. Having scoured the outer reaches of the observable universe and making it back without being time-dilated into oblivion, 'Perpetual Motion' is Clements' latest alien sonic haul. Venturing into nods to obscure drum n' bass variants such as raggatek, 'Creation' opts for advanced, techy breakscience amid dreamy pad arps and electric transitions. 'Placid' harks back to the dawn of drum n' bass, immortalizing the call of the loom bird as it's mixed among fine drumwork. If the A-siders were black holes, then the Bs are stars; 'Essence' has the most basic yet most infectious breakbeat, while 'Silent Running' is a lonesome closer, suitable for soundtracking the most daring of untethered spacewalks.

What Lies Beneath
Rainforest
Review: ASC can't really do any wrong if you ask us, whether crafting suspensory ambient or laying down killer jungle cuts. It's the latter which he does here for the Spatial label in the form of this great looking multi-colour splatter vinyl. 'Infinity' has you adrift in the cosmos on dusty amen breaks, then '2097' is a tight and kinetic number with mystic lead and yelping vocal fragments. There is yet more deep space mystery to the melodies of 'What Lies Beneath' then humid closer 'Rainforest' has watery droplets falling down physical drum breaks that make you move your hole body.

Symbiotic Link
A Single Emotion
Whirl
Frontier
Review: British producer ASC continues his prolific run with a second installment of widescreen, breakbeat futurism. As ever, the hallmarks of his sound-precision-tooled drums, brooding atmospheres, and sci-fi ambience-are on full display, but here they're driven harder and deeper. 'Symbiotic Link' opens with cinematic unease before snapping into razor-edged snares and a low-slung, Photek-channeling bassline. 'A Single Emotion' is another standout, balancing dense edits and vintage funk breaks with melancholic pads and ghostly vocal shots. On the flip, 'Whirl' rides the Hot Pants break through shimmering synthwork and undulating bass, offering a more meditative ride without losing rhythmic bite. Closer 'Frontier' edges into noir territory, its delicate keys and bells shadowed by rumbling subs and clipped vocal fragments. It's a masterclass in pacing and mood from one of the UK's most quietly influential electronic artists.

Review: You'd be hard pushed to keep up with everything ASC puts out on his own Auxiliary and Spatial labels, let alone what crops up elsewhere, but at least you can be sure wherever you check in, the quality will be unerringly high. On this latest 12" for Spatial, we get whisked away on a cloud of atmospheric d&b finery with 'Dreamcatcher' before plummeting to earth with the hard-knocking drum science of 'Tranquility'. 'Drifting Thru' pairs rough amens with epic pads and then 'Floatation' explores more acutely angled breaks and an immersive pool of melodic composition, holding true to the Spatial remit as an outlet for the deeper end of the junglist spectrum.

Divine Intervention (7:33)
Variable State (7:22)
Azure (7:24)
Loose Ends (7:42)
Review: Relentlessly prolific and inspired to the last, ASC continues to round out the sonic impression of his most recent label Spatial with this luxurious excursion into the deeper end of the d&b spectrum. The new age pads on 'Divine Intervention' might well trigger the odd Logical Progression memory, but there's a certain snappiness and focus to the breakbeat which feels entirely ASC's own. 'Variable State' probes at tension and release between outright ambience and airy breaks which contrast beautifully with the fulsome, rounded subs in a manner which should satisfy Photek fans. 'Azure' offers a more sensitive, melancholic kind of roller, while 'Loose Ends' goes in hard on the drum edits and epic atmospheric blooms. No one does it like ASC.

Review: Covert operator ASC continues his astral travels for his current series of intergalactic breakbeat explorations with 'Star Cluster'. Following 'Isometric Projection' and 'Cause & Effect', this EP once again reaches to the heavens for its essence and rolls out with shimmering, emotional charm and more than its fair share of heavy drum punches. The dreamy vocal calls and slamming breaks of 'Solyaris' and the tightly coiled spring groove of 'Oblivion' are both major highs on this trip.

Review: Forever taking our brains to new dimensions, longstanding ambient/tech/jungle fusioneer ASC unleashes a few long-awaited cuts from his armoury. 'Shadowplay' takes the lead and will no doubt be the most supported track on the club side of things. Big splashy breaks and breezy pads rule the roots on this and will squeeze the breath out of any head a 20 mile radius. Levels remain high throughout the EP; 'Lacuna' hits hard with a militant snare-led rhythm, 'Dimensions' is the dreamy number of the pack while 'Southern Cross' brings us back home safely. What a trip.

Review: Having only launched last year, Spatial, ASC's fourth label, has been serving up a remarkable amount of goodies over the last 18 months, including a huge slew of ASC's own work. More focused on the jungle side of his output, 'Thematic Purpose' is his nineth release on the label and it kicks in all directions. 'Burst Transmission' and 'Whispers' are the heavier, more floor-focused tracks while 'Psionic Bond' and 'Future Music' take a deeper, more introspective approach. Stunning.

Voidscaping (7:23)
Let Go (7:24)
Meltdown (7:27)
Review: Mind Over Matter', the latest release from ASC, continues his explorations into atmospheric, breakbeat-driven soundscapes with striking results. Opening track 'Desire' sets the tone with a lush beat structure, punctuated by sharp cymbal strikes. Subtle whale song samples are woven into the mix, accompanied by a warm bassline and tender piano melodies, while swirling strings ebb and flow, creating an almost tidal sense of movement. 'Voidscaping' follows, launching immediately into crisp, striking breakbeats. The throwback pads recall the heyday of Good Looking, but ASC's meticulous sampling and deep reverb work keep the track fresh, merging nostalgia with modern complexity. On the flip, 'Let Go' brings in the sounds of nature, with metallic bongos and a restrained choral vocal riding over playful, energetic hi-hats. The atmosphere builds, layering strings, synths, and ASC's trademark vocal elements, each listen revealing new intricacies. 'Meltdown' wraps things up with a darker, more anxious vibe. Minimal breaks and elusive hi-hats give the track a creeping tension, while ambient pads and a yearning female vocal add a layer of emotional depth. It's a finely balanced track, blending melancholy and intensity in a way that ASC has mastered.

Review: Cosmic drum & bass voyager ASC once again proves that his sound is like no other, topping up his now likely uncountable backlog of time-dilatory journeys with a fresh four-tracker, 'Moving Through Dreams'. Indeed, for those in the know, the boundary between outer space and inner unconscious astrals can be blurred; it's clear ASC is clued in in this regard, with this hat-trick-plus-one of both rollers and breaks frenzies showing off an understanding of the format than only seasoned somn-journalists can handle. On the dreamier end of the spectrum, there's 'Things Left Unsaid', a wordless foray into the latent parapraxes that only real dream work can consciously upturn; and on the wilder end of things, there's 'Contrast', which apposes, in stark *contrast* - the industrial scrape of a techstep break with the depth-scouring swells of nebulaic pads n' basses.

Review: California-based, British drum & bass musician ASC returns with more homages to late 90s atmospheric drum & bass on his excellent sub-label Spatial. Anyone who has been following his work and the releases that he's put out on his Auxiliary label and sub labels in the past few years should know what to expect. Following on from last month's excellent full-length Next Time You Fall, 'Undercurrents' is four tracks of impeccably produced ambient jungle. The first cut, 'Ocean Breeze', has a simpler rhythm than you would expect from him, which could be a hint at a more liquid future direction. The next three cuts are classic ASC: cut-up, spaced-out breaks interspersed with dreamy vocals.

Review: Space jungle extraordinaire ASC is as prolific as they come, and this week he's back again with 'Sphere Of Influence', a synth-heavy present-day take on the dreamy origins of his chosen sound. Beginning with 'The Arcane', we're most struck with ASC's emphasis on atmospherics and synthwork - they come first compared to his relatively functional breakscience, which are like godlike apparatuses guiding us through heavily nuanced, heavenly vistas. That functionality goes out of the window with 'Threeform', though - an unusually sound-designed number which introduces suddenly-huge variation in the breaks, in what is said to be ¾ time.

'Ascension' channels some vintage Good Looking vibes with its aqueous pads and bash amen edits, while 'Solar Rays' is more tightly clipped to give a more contemporary flavour without losing that dreamy, melancholic mood. This pink vinyl on the Spatial label opens with archetypal amen breaks straight from the 90s on 'Parallel Universe'. Subtle funk melodies add the colour then crisp breaks define 'Warning Sine' with its textural synth lines and atmospheric breakdowns. Review: In contrast to the deluge of raw d&b we've let through the floodgates this week, ASC's latest EP is a dreamy and twinkly scene-setter. Nodding to the presence of godlike, benevolent celestial beings behind the beats, tracks like 'Averted Visions' and 'Aphelion's Edge' seem to be getting at something like a divine ideal of space jungle. They play up the entrancing possibilities of the breakbeat (however lo-fi the original drum samples are) rather than their banger potential.

Review: Aural Imbalance continues his prolific run of atmospheric d&b brilliance with a new drop on his own Spatial platform. The frequent ASC collaborator shares a similar affinity for breakbeats with a sci-fi sheen and expansive swathes of melancholic pads, but his style is all his own. 'Lunar Sunset' is as poignant and evocative as the title would suggest, with the synths taking precedence before a clattering break comes into the mix. 'Moonfall' has a tougher roll to carry forth the subdued melodics underneath, and 'Point Of Origin' gets busy with some deftly sliced Apaches and sparkling arps. 'Near-Earth Object' offers the barest slithers of beats and looming sub lines before the drums fire up to close the record out in style.

'Luminosity' in particular is a haunting composition with light-touch breaks chopped with an elegant approach, more than matching the thoughtful surroundings. Things get even deeper on 'Moonscape', even if there's space for a proper break to kick in, but hold on for the nimble Apache flourishes skipping across vast dunes of harmony on 'Sunlight Through Clouds' - truly masterful, mesmerising excursions from an expert in the approach.

Review: Spatial Recordings are on a real roll; this isn't the only stellar Aural Imbalance EP to have been released lately. 'Far From Home' evokes the feeling of straying far from home all too well, its sonic subject taking every inauspicious risk - enslavement, treachery - for the sake of personal understanding and self-discovery, despite the cosmic abysses of loneliness that inevitably result from sonic journeys such as this. Aural Imbalance's ability to approach drum & bass pictorally, as if each track were a landscape painting, is all too evident; by far the star track is 'Lysithea', which does to atmospheric jungle what Tin Man does to acid, lending just-right amounts of echo, reverb and all-purpose space to a neat breaks-and-synth formula that goes beyond the mere sum of its parts.

It is the former he returns to now with a lush translucent blue vinyl 12", Retrospective Feelings. Perhaps Eusebeia is aware that Apollo's son was the god of healing and remedies: A-sider 'Healing Properties' shoots for jungle of the least abrasive kind, lowpassing the breaks to allow a thick cloud of pads and synths, which dance about the mix. Also helping to cement Eusebeia's renaissance in sound is 'Scope Of Understanding', which clarifies the Overton window for a new sonic age; keeping to sampled-breaks orthodoxy but nonetheless pushing for a full reformation in breaks and ambience, blowing any and all potential competition out the park when it comes to sound design and sense of cosmic space.

Pseudovector (6:33)
Helios Drift (6:54)
Wavefunction (6:54)
Review: Reinforced graduate, technoid polymath and very early US jungle representer Jamie Myerson returns to Spatial, ASC's platform that willed him back into the game just under a year ago. His third EP since his return, once again Jamie treats us to four sublime sonic scenarios ranging from the bright and hopeful salvo of ravey open 'Tensor' to the poignant pads and hazy farewell of the finale cut 'Wavefunction'. Each one as beguiling and emotionally sprung as the next, these are a testament to both Myerson and Spatial's enduring sense of timelessness.

Drum And Bass
Salva Veritate (6:06)
Nova (6:59)
Consensus Reality (6:31)
Hotspot (5:44)
Review: JLM opens the EP for Spatial with 'Consensus Reality', an uplifting track driven by lush keys and filtered breaks. The melodies are woven from a range of harmonious elements, while crisp apache breaks are expertly introduced, showcasing JLM's signature style. 'Salva Veritate' shifts to a darker, more intense atmosphere. Whooshing synths and dense soundscapes are layered over hefty 'Hot Pants' breaks, with tuneful 808 basslines and blippy sub-melodies adding texture to this suspenseful track. On the flip side, 'Hotspot' starts with mellow, jazzy keys before bursting into life with juddering snares and smooth 808 basslines. Dreamy strings and pads sweep through the mix, creating a paradox of energy and calm. The EP closes with 'Nova', a soothing track featuring soft, flowing synths and delicate beats. Subtle effects and cosmic breaks aplenty - an exceptional release.

Drum And Bass
Permeate (5:44)
Orogeny (6:10)
Subsidence (6:07)
Lamminar Flow (6:14)
Review: Spatial is the connoisseur d&b label run by Simon Huxtable aka Aural Imbalance and as well as dropping a new EP from the boss himself this month, JLM Productions also steps up with a fine limited edition purple slab of brilliance. These sounds are more textural and dense than the boss's, with 'Permeate' plunging on heavy drum breaks, while 'Orogeny' is a busy one with crashing hits and more sub-bass drilling down low. 'Subsidence' douses you in widescreen cinematic pads while the drums flutter about the field and 'Lamminar Flow' brings things to a close with a more bright melodic touch and cruising grooves.
