Drum And Bass
Trunk (feat MC Coppa) (5:00)
No Escape (feat Nitri) (5:16)
Review: Level 2 and DJ Chap continue to demolish the dance with their currently-spotless Alibi project; "Trunk" is a conga-weaving roller with all the hallmark ingredients of a timeless classic heads-down roller; tight percussion, creeping basses and subtle bars from Coppa, everything about it is deep, dark and dangerous. "No Escape", featuring fellow Sao Paulo artist Nitri, is more of a late night fast lane stepper. Laced with techy textures but driven by a precision groove break and heaps of space, it's a smack back to the darker sounds of the early 2000s before everything went hyper. Extremely well played.

Review: It would be fair to say that Planet V Drum & Bass Volume 2 is "action packed". Featuring some 50 tracks shoehorned onto two discs, it offers a whirlwind trip through drum and bass's more far-sighted pastures. In practice, that means a blend of slick liquid rollers, heavier tech-tinged fare, and what the label describes as "straight-up smashers". Brazilian duo Alibi delivers the obligatory DJ mix, effortlessly squeezing in a wealth of exclusive or previously unheard material from the likes of L-Side, Command Strange, Paul T, Break, Optiv and V Recordings' regulars Roni Size and Bailey.

Review: This fantastic V 12" gets a timely re-issue. ‘Rotation’ (not to be confused with their own track of the same name) gets a new spin from DJ Marky & XRS together, whilst ‘Brothers’ is overhauled by XRS on his own. Both tracks are polished up like gems, subtly blending the techno elements into a colourful drum & bass template. DJ support has come from Fabio, Bryan G, DJ Lee, Makoto, Marcus Intalex, JJ Frost, Kabuki, Storm, Bailey, Goldie, Andy C, Ray Keith, AI, DJ Marky, TC1, Patife, XRS, Commix, Logistics, Mosus and more.

Let It Be (feat Steo - DJ Marky & SPY remix)
Review: Artificial Intelligence are well and truly back in the building! Following up the chart-tickling "Raver" they produced for Ayah Marar, AI get back to the underground with this grizzling tear-out that's softened just the perfect amount with Dan Bowskill's soaring vocals. "Let It Be" takes the B-side. Remixed by Brazilian badmen Marky & S.P.Y, essentially it's a liquid cut - but if you study that bottom end closely you'll hear a lot more roughage than initially meets the ear.

Review: Given that he's been on the UK jungle scene since the mid 1990s, it's taken Birmingham-based singer/songwriter David Boomah quite a while to put together this debut album. It was, though, worth the wait, as One World Many Cultures is a fine set. Featuring his distinctive vocals (a mix of toasting and soulful singing) over a variety of sun-flecked styles - jungle, dubstep, soul, dancehall, warm, organic breaks and hip-hop soul - it boasts production from Serum, Rob & Robbie, Benny Page and Aries and Gold. The guestlist also includes mic slayers Tenor Fly, Solo Banton, Harry Shotta, Serocee and YT, guaranteeing an impressive all-star feel to proceedings. There's no doubt, though, that Boomah is the star of the show.

Review: Long-time Shy FX collaborator, Boomah has been blessing cuts with his bubbling, melodic vocals for years. Now with an album lined up on Bryan Gee's V, big things are finally about to happen. Big things like "Forward Ever", an old school homage with a spitfire vocal soundclash as Boomah goes toe-to-toe with Serocee, Aries and Gold. There's no stopping on the remix front as Unreal ups the tempo for some all-out laser-reaching D&B action. Keep looking forward.

Different Style
Review: If you know Drum & Bass, you know Digital & Spirit need no real introduction, but despite 20 years experience of tearing down club soundsystems and appearances on many of the seminal labels, it's quite strange the pair have never appeared on V Recordings. That anomaly is remedied here in quite rude fashion with Garrison's Law, a fine double drop done in collaboration with rising Mancunian Response. V Recordings describe both "Garrison's Law" and "Different Style" as dancefloor juggernauts, and you'll find it hard to disagree with this statement after spending some time with the previews. Proper junglist vibes aplenty on both for a record the underground selectors will love to play out for some time.

Review: Considering the label's roster, clout and history, V Recordings don't throw the word 'legend' around unless they mean it. And boy do they mean it for this 003; two unreleased corkers from Karl Francis here covering two different chapters of his sound. On the A we have 'Selassie I Sound' capturing his 94/95 era with badass Amen choppage and that rich soundsystem treacle vibe to the bass. On the B we have the late 90s Dillinja with a much more chiselled steppy beat as he flips the Cybotron classic into VIP mode. Neither track has been released before. All aboard!

Dillinja - "Love 4 You VIP" (5:15)
Review: A welcome and precious addition to the new 'Legends' series by V Recordings, 'Lionheart' is a tune made with friend and equal talent Berty B, that has existed since 1994 and is famous for its opening "ready? get set... music!" sample and vinyl-spinback oneshots. It's a nigh-timeless track that straddles raggatek, jump-up and jungle techno in almost a single breath. Much later came the VIP (variation in production), which added far glossier and more heavenly variations and a harder-edged sheen. Now it gets a reissue. Also here comes the brand new VIP of 'Love 4 You', which is a masterclass in airy, spacious intro-work, which segues into pure drum-driving as per the formula.

Review: Woi and indeed oi, V return to their vinyl-only Legends series where they dig deep into the vaults and pull out key dubplates that never saw the official release light of day. Key dubplates like these two big Bristol bruisers from DJ Die. Both written in 96, Die's Full Cycle rawness and innate sense of groovemanship is present and correct on both sides - the jazzier, busier work-out 'Capers' and the heavier, stripped-back 'Inside' which you can imagine was made in response to some of the game-changing sounds Krust was making at the time. Legendary business.

Aint That Bad (feat DRS) (5:21)
Unexpected (5:21)
Review: Brazilian don Patife returns with his new gen wingman Vangeliez. Following last year's "The Vibe Is Comin'" on V's Sun And Bass album, the duo step up with a full quartet of dreamy soul rollers. "Living Together" features MC royalties Fats and Stamina in a harmonic sun-kissed stand off over a light afternoon groove while "On The Floor" takes us much deeper into the night with an LSB-style deep roll. Flip for more MC premiership as DRS unleashes more wisdom on the soft, restrained groove of "Ain't That Bad" before "Unexpected" closes with the darkest treat of the set; a loose drummed shaker that sounds like it landed 15 years ago on Soulr. Accolades don't come any higher.

Review: Bristol's live D&B veterans Dr Meaker have made some interesting ventures in the pop-tinged dubstep fields of late but their sound still lends itself well to the 170 realm... As proved by these two killer rubs from Unreal and Sly. The former continues his rich vein of form with a deep, dark subby roller while the latter goes straight for the jugular with a Low Down Deep style guttural jump up flex. Two prize "Fighters" for the price of one. Heaviness abounds.

Initially released digitally through Circus last month and backed with a slew of remixes, it's nice to see the good Doctor right back on the vinyl format and on V, with Break's excellent remix also making the cut. In the Beatmaker legend's hands, "Right Back" is truly transformed with Break cutting into the drop in a stunningly stark way, weaving dark drums magic the only way he can.

Review: Eveson's debut long player has arrived, and it spanks of quality throughout. Not just musically, but the artwork is hand-printed and numbered by the man himself. Most importantly, though, it sparkles musically too... A tempo-flexing range of textures, there's a dreamy, wistful wonder laced across the eight tracks. Highlights come in many forms, but essential tracks that will work well in the club AND the floor include the soaring cascading percussion of "Land Of Milk And Honey" and the breath-taking title track itself.

Review: It's easy to forget that Jumpin' Jack Frost and Bryan Gee's V Recordings imprint is still going. Once considered the eminent label in drum & bass, the imprint's star has waned in recent years. That's not to say that they've become irrelevant; in fact, they continue to put out excellent material, as this two CD mix-up from Gee proves. Showcasing old skool heroes (Krust, Peshay, Artificial Intelligence), current superstars (Calibre) and newer names (Mr Joseph, Dr Meaker, Level 2), Planet V offers a whirlwind, thrill-a-minute snapshot of where drum and bass is right now. From Hospital-ish, Latin-tinged rollers to formidable darkroom fare via the kind of summery grooves often heard drifting out of D&B arenas at festivals, it's a thoroughly enjoyable romp in the company of a true scene original.

Review: A real treat for hip-hop fans as legendary Jeru the Damaja graces German producer Kabuki's hype D&B beats on "Watch Your Step". Using cuts from Jeru's classic "Come Clean" on the chorus, the collaboration works brilliantly with Jeru adapting his flow to the tempo well and showing no signs of slacking as a rhymer. Just as good is the exclusive remix of "Just Hold On" by Serum which is already getting plays by the likes of High Contrast and Bryan Gee. Off the hook beats back up the jazzy vocal choruses and it's a storming treat all round.

Review: Say hello to V's new Legends series... A new platform for some of the scene's biggest pioneers to unleash a little unreleased fire of yore. First up, Bristol professor Krust who serves up two heroic jams from around the mid 90s era. "Unit 23" is a tense, slower breakbeat exercise, all rusty and clanky and uncompromising while "Pentacle" hurls us right into the tech-trenched jungle. Industrial strength power and brute force funk, it's mad to even consider how long these have remained on DAT. Let's hope there are many more long lost gems to come!

Review: V return to their Legends series as they dig out more unreleased gold from the vaults. This time they welcome the return of Krust to the series with two more dubs that criminally never saw the light of day back when they were made. 'The Master' was clearly one of the tunes on the build up to 'Warhead' as certain FX and that sludgy droning bass both play lead roles. 'Resistance' feels a little later in Krust's catalogue - maybe late 90s / early 2000s as he's playing around with similar kloaking-style sounds with more of a technoid bassline. Timeless.

Review: Veteran junglists who attended D&B events in the 1990s may well be aware of "Wu Tang". The track was a regular fixture in its creator Lemon D's DJ sets and was originally slated to be the B-side of his 1992 12" "I Can't Stop", before he ditched it in favour of "Change". Here it finally sees the light of day as part of V Recordings' "Legends" series of previously unreleased jungle and drum and bass classics. The original mix features squealing vocal stabs, Wu Tang Clan vocal snippets and booming sub-bass springing above a crunchy, Amen-driven rhythm. Over on the flip you'll find the "Lost Dub Mix", which takes the track up a notch or two thanks to even more energetic drums and some seriously aggressive bass.

Best Life (with TRAC) (4:26)
Review: Paul T and Edward Oberon have been working together for years, first appearing together some 10 years ago on Mars before settling into a rhythm on V Recordings. Now though they're stepping things up with a full fat album project, pooling their resources as producers into the mix with Oberon's stunning vocals helping shape the identity of the music overall. There's also a strong cast of collaborators passing through on Strange Days, from MC Fats and Cleveland Watkiss to Serum and Lorna King. This is D&B that leaps across boundaries, keeping one foot in the club while opening up to structured songwriting, trying different approaches across the run time and creating a varied, accomplished record.

How We Used To Live
Review: To drum and bass connoisseurs of a certain vintage, uttering the name Peshay is likely to elicit fond memories of the genre's golden era. A name synonymous with some of the finest tracks in D&B history, news that Peshay is currently working on a new album is both surprising and exciting! Forthcoming on the equally seminal V Records imprint, a taste of what to expect is afforded by this twelve inch double drop. Lead track "Solina" drips with epicness, steadily rising from the orchestral ether, aligning with a vintage steppahs beat building a head of steam that explodes into the main thrust. As good as "Solina" is, the old skool crowd will head straight for the B Side annihilator "How We Used To Live". A darkside roller of the highest pedigree, dread vibes abound over the ruffest of drum sounds which fully demonstrate how devastating Peshay can be!

When The Daylight Comes
Review: Back in 2001, seminal D&B figure DJ Marky released a two-track 12" called the Brazilian Job which paired full on Latin vibes (think vocals, guitars and flair) with liquid drum and bass rhythms. Almost 15 years on and Random Movement proves there is plenty more mileage in this approach with the blissfully summery vibes of Ahead of it All for V Recordings. Admittedly, Random Movement does get a little dirtier through a wobbly bassline in "Ahead Of It All" while the alternative option, "When The Daylight Comes", is darker and rolling with some subtle jungle and tribal elements, and the slightest of tear-out moments.

Synction (4:12)
Review: Oof! V Recordings continue to dig deep in the vaults and dust off rarities and unreleased dubs from some of the most legendary pioneers who 've come through the V University. Following the likes of Krust, Lemon D and Dillinja comes Roni Size with two brilliantly contrasting examples of his contributions and influence in jungle. 'Operation X' smacks of early 2000s golden era liquid with its big bashy samples and bubbling bassline while 'Synction' is a much headier brew of bass and dark funk. Timeless.

Locked Down (4:56)
Review: V's history sessions continue as more long-sought after dubs of yore get unleashed. This time it's Bristol pioneer Roni with two very different moods. 'Cold Front' is a deep and jazzy roller for those heads-down Running Man moments while 'Locked Down' is an early 2000s laser blazer thanks to its massive electro-style bassline and swaggering, hard-hitting kicks. A cult Movement favourite anthem from the time, this one's been a long time coming.

Ruffstuff & Friller vs Nu Elementz - "Gatts"
Ruffstuff & Freeze - "New Horizons"
Review: Kool FM's Ruffstuff gets his collabo flex on across two cuts that showcase his wide range and versatile. "Gatts" is a nod to the Urban Takeover days of jump-up. Minimal, funky and rude without ever going too over the top, it bounces with a mischief that will work in any D&B DJ's sets. "New Horizons" is a much darker affair, swinging with a tick-tock riddim and a belly-busting sub lick it would fit perfectly into an old Dillinja set.

Rare Groove (feat Saxxon)
Review: 2013 is looking set to be the year of Savage Rehab. Hot on the heels of the massive "4Ward" comes this ode to the classic Bristol flavoured rollers. "Neck Funk" leads with sharp steppy beats and a deliciously simplistic bassline that purrs as it bounces. Any fans of old Kartoons releases will be all over this. "Rare Groove" on the B is a similar affair just deeper and laced with big thick splashes of liquid guitar. Think Peshay. Think wicked.

Strings Tune
Review: V Recordings continue to deliver the magic and this next release from Serum is no exception. "Horn Track" begins with shimmying, chiming tones and juddering drums and falls into an out and out belter with a dense soundscape full of pounding drumwork, booming bass and hissing hi-hats in abundance with the iconic, jingling melody coming in and out of focus. "Strings Tune" comes with this and continues to weave a similar pattern with pummelling beats, roaring bassweight and plenty of weighty, speaker-wobbling prowess.

Ruffstuff & Friller vs Nu Elementz - "Gatts VIP"
Review: VIP vibes: two modern classics from 2013 get the special version treatment. Need For Mirrors' Seven shake-up gets a colder, moodier twist as hazy, Detroitian synths wash and weave in and around the rolling dynamic. "Gatts", meanwhile, retains its jump-up arrangement while an array of trippier textures and more robust drums are added to the blend. Exemplary examples of update magic, both kill it.

John Rolodex - "Chromium"
Review: Bringing the old school flavour like only two D&B scene heads possibly can, Power and Rolodex lay out a series of steppy beats and processed amen fills while Khadija delivers a Destiny's Child-level vocal. With cool samples and dynamic switches, it's contemporary nostalgia at its most powerful and rewindable. Rolodex's "Chromium", meanwhile, is a much more straightforward stepper that oozes reference points from Origin Unknown to Dillinja. Vibes galore.

In Da City
Review: Currently being smashed by every A-list DJ and anyone else lucky enough to have gotten their hands on an advance copy, Tommy Boy comes up trumps with 'Love & Happiness', an anthem and future V Classic. The vocals make you want to cry, the guitar loop sends shivers down your spine and the bassline makes you jump - a perfect combination. 'In the City' is a harder, up for it, collaboration between Tommy Boy and Distorted Minds, also being given the massive dubplate support from Bryan G, JJ Frost, Andy C, Total Science, Grooverider, Friction, Bailey, L Double, DJ SS, Brockie, Clipz, Die, Kenny Ken, Mickey Finn and DJ Hype to name a few.

Now over three years old all tracks still pack a unique and refreshing punch. With the likes of Calibre, Random Movement, Submorphics, Lenzman, Paul SG all on the dials, this sits somewhere between DRS's I Don't Usually Like MCs, But... and Tali's Lyric On My Lip as one of the most important drum & bass MC artist albums in the history of the genre. Review: AI release their first single of 2006 and both of these tracks have featured on the 'Liquid V Club Sessions Vol. 2' CD which they compiled and mixed. 'Movin On' gets the remix treatment from the Brazilian boys DJ Marky & Bungle and has been going down a treat with it's catchy vocal and reworked bassline. 'The Power Within' sees AI link up with legendary house vocalist, and one of their inspirations, Robert Owens. The result is a superb d&b track incorporating the old Detroit electro feel.
