The original incarnation of The Ugly American was a 1958 political novel by Eugene Burdick and William Lederer, which set its scenes amid the failures of the US diplomatic corps in Southeast Asia after the Second World War. A controversial example of art telling life like it is, Mark Eitzel's album, which owes its title to the book, is equally stirring, if driven by matters of heart rather than the global power struggle.
First released in 2003, it represents an acclaimed artist taking a retrospective look through his own back catalogue at that time. And what a back catalogue it is. Firmly set in Americana and country rock, it manages to cram a whole load into those definitions and then some. A crooning serenade in the form of 'Last Harbor', belting big room guitars and soaring violins on 'Love's Humming', frantic fireside crescendos interrupting the romance of 'What Good Is Love'.
