Sai Yoshiko, a defining figure in Japan's 1970s popular music sphere, has set about releasing her many masterpieces once again, after an earlier round of 2021 reissues sold out in a flash. Now, again, they're all available on limited edition coloured vinyl. And one standout among them is her 1978 album Chou No Sumu Heya, which diffuses a gourmand jazz, hearing her accompanied by the talented Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio. The album is a potent sonic thurible, incensing us to join Yoshiko in her alternate sonic world. On a note of radical negativity, after the album's creation, Sai remarked, "I can no longer write songs that I like," suggesting the worthwhile depletion of a vital inner resource.
