Review: Ryan Adams is a man of many faces, and talents. Capable of tearing his own heart out to pen achingly beautiful songs, seemingly written in his own blood, he has a clear understanding of the human condition and how to tap into our most fragile moods and moments. Nevertheless, he remains a controversial character off-stage, from sexual harassment allegations - and his subsequent apologies - to reports of angry voicemails on critics answering machines and asking fans to leave gigs for 'rude outbursts'. Still, his show at New York's iconic Carnegie Hall on 14th May 2022 saw a packed house gather to listen to his work, which this recording offers a wonderful insight into. Stop-you-dead moments are here in abundance, while his clear rapport with fans - on this occasion at least - also stands out. A masterclass in alternative acoustic rock, informed by country sensibilities, listening through hits like 'New York, New York' and 'Come Pick Me Up', alongside deeper fare such as 'Romeo & Juliet' and a cover of Black Sabbath's 'The Wizard', only emphasises what one-man tour de force he is.

Review: Made and released way back in 1958, Somethin' Else is a classic jazz album by the American alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, notably his only ever album for the esteemed Blue Note label. It famously hears Adderley enlist the help of trumpeter Miles Davis as one of its sidemen, and this was an ongoing relationship that later paved the way for popular jazz as a whole; without Somethin' Else, we wouldn't have Kind Of Blue, for which Adderley would contribute his sax playing just a year later. Though it is a testament to the unity of two great core musicians, we also hear the piano stylings of Hank Jones, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Art Blakey.

Review: Cork based Irish post-black metal pioneers Altar Of Plagues are often cited as one of the pioneering acts to combine elements of second wave tremolo-picking, blast-beating black metal with post-rock and euphoric shoegaze which has since been popularised by artists such as Deafheaven and Liturgy. Trilogy serves as an encapsulation of the band's three vital full-lengths, White Tomb (2009), Mammal (2011), and the epic swansong Teethed Glory & Injury (2013), all re-issued with new artwork and design, as well as being remastered for vinyl from the original tapes. Likely to be the final time these works are ever pressed to wax, at least by label home Prosthetic Records; this is a definitive collector's piece of one of the most underrated and integral contributors and elevators to the black metal genre in the 21st century.

Review: Outside In decided to highlight Ray Angry's exceptional talent as a top pianist with the new album Three. Solo piano, a tradition that runs through jazz greats like Art Tatum to Keith Jarrett, is the perfect platform to showcase Angry's brilliance so in the fall of 2022 he visited Reservoir Studios, sat at the Steinway piano, and played for two hours straight. The result was an extraordinary torrent of music, blending classical, jazz, and pop, all unique to Ray. Now the best of it is served up in this bumper box set with a deluxe booklet with writings by Questlove and Black Thought.

Review: Three collaborative albums by The Hafler Trio and Autechre - ae.o & h.ae (2003), aeo. & .hae (2005) and ah.eo & ha.oe (2011) - were released one after the other over a rather long period and despite their intention as a comprehensive trinity, came out first via separate labels. It was as good a collab back then as it is now: we all may know Autechre, but Hafler Trio by comparison was a neat audiovisual counterpart to the former's gyratory mayhem music, erring more on the side of multimedia. Together, their music provides a raucous blend of abstract, ambient, drone and experimental music, with minimal and complex soundscapes, long silences and wild dynamic variation. all adding up to something rather. This comp brings all three LPs together, limiting the culmination to just 500 copies.

Review: American blues-slanted rock band the Black Crowes put out their second album The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion back in May 1992. It was the first time Marc Ford had featured on lead guitar in place of Jeff Cease who was sacked the year before. It also marked the first time Eddie Harsch joined on keys and set a record at the time for being the first album to feature four rock number ones, and the album itself also climbed to the top spot in the Billboard 200 album chart. Its mix of blues and Southern styles often sees the album being included in lists of the best rock albums of all time.

Review: RECOMMENDED
How can heavy metal-ers not get excited about this one? While sporting a pretty serious price tag, this Super Deluxe edition of Black Sabbath's seminal fourth album is certainly one for the collectors, who will delight in the 11 additional studio recordings featured in the huge amount of bonus material here, which include snippets of studio dialogue, false starts and more rough around the edges nuances that bring the work to life.

As for the LP itself, it was something of a landmark moment in the band's journey - shifting the intensity and ferocity up at least three gears and then sticking a brick on the throttle to hold it in place. Perhaps Mojo's take on things puts it best; ""If booze and dope had helped fuel Sabbath's earlier albums, Vol. 4 is their cocaine ... Despite their spiraling addictions, musically Vol. 4 is another ambitious outing". Enough said.

Review: Paranoid is a prime example of the relentless work rate of rock bands during the 1970s. Arriving just four months after their eponymous debut album landed in 1970, which hit the UK top ten and arguably invented heavy metal music, while that predecessor was a landmark it's on their second album that the English guitar titans really hit the motherlode.

Now 50 years young, and no less bruising or battered, this is the record that gave us the poised, blues tension of 'War Pigs', the world-famous title anthem, and pitch-shifting 'Iron Man', all three of which remain some of the most defining tracks from the band's history, and the history of deep, dark and driving rock 'n' roll music. Presented here with some hugely atmospheric live versions ('Fairies Wear Boots' from Montreux is particularly noteworthy), there's never been a better time to buy.

Review: While the tenure of both Ozzy Osborne and Ronnie James Dio as vocalists for metal giants Black Sabbath has been documented, praised and repressed ad nauseam, little discussion is often rewarded to Tony Martin, who actually served as the band's second-longest standing frontman. Finally catalogued in this new box set, Anno Domini: 1989-1995 offers up newly remastered versions of Headless Cross (1989), Tyr (1990), Cross Purposes (1994), and Forbidden (1995), with the latter being remixed entirely by guitarist Tony Iommi for the occasion. Complete with an additional booklet, never before seen photos, a Headless Cross poster and a replica concert book from the Headless Cross Tour; this is the ultimate Martin-era fan service that will be long overdue to many a veteran metalhead.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record sleeve damaged, product in working order***

The Brian Cox-starring hereditary TV drama Succession was a sensation. Satirising the inevitable real-life chaos surrounding Rupert Murdoch's media imperial legacy, the series highlighted the internal contradictions of ultra-rich family life, and was noted for its depiction of such a life as necessarily unenviable. Now the iconic soundtrack by composer Nicholas Brittell surfaces for the first time on vinyl; lined with notes by series producer Jesse Armstrong, this LP encompasses everything from the series's main theme song through to each motif, revelling in the series' bombastic, pompous, yet also farcical, foundering subject matter.

Review: What is there left to say about this landmark recording, which captures the heart and soul of pre-revolutionary Cuban music, bringing together veteran musicians whose artistry might have otherwise been lost to time. The result is a stunning blend of son cubano, bolero, danzon and jazz, each track infused with intricate rhythms and heartfelt performances. Flamenco-tinged vocals soar over interwoven instrumentalsieach simple in isolation but collectively forming a rich, textured soundscape. The interplay between piano, guitar and percussion is electrifying, balancing smooth elegance with raw passion. From the hypnotic pulse of 'Chan Chan' to the fiery energy of 'El Cuarto de Tula' and the aching beauty of 'Veinte ANos', the music effortlessly bridges past and present. Moments of exuberance give way to quiet reflection, showcasing the full emotional range of these master musicians. The sharp piano work, the percussive drive and the warmth of the vocal harmonies create an irresistible urge to dance. Even in its most hurried passages, there's an undeniable charmievery note brimming with life. Now presented on a 4xLP gatefold edition, pressed on 180-gram audiophile vinyl and cut at 45 RPM for maximum fidelity, this reissue elevates an already timeless collection. The past lingers in every note, proving that old songs truly do stir old feelings.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, stands as a unique gem in both artists' discographies. Originally released in 1986, this ethereal album is now being reissued on vinyl, remastered from the original tapes by Robin Guthrie. Unlike anything else the Cocteau Twins ever produced, this record blends their dreamlike soundscapes with Budd's serene, improvisational piano work. The result is an atmospheric journey, at once intimate and expansive. Tracks like 'Sea, Swallow Me' shine with Elizabeth Fraser's otherworldly vocals, intertwined with Guthrie's shimmering guitar and Raymonde's grounding bass, creating a sound that feels both familiar and entirely unique. Instrumentals like 'Memory Gongs' and 'The Ghost Has No Home' highlight Budd's delicate piano, enhanced by the band's signature ambient textures. The album is a study in contrasts, vocal tracks sit alongside instrumentals, each contributing to a cohesive yet diverse listening experience. For fans, this reissue is a chance to revisit a pivotal moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The album's enduring appeal is evident in its continued influence in social media. The Moon and the Melodies remains a shining light that can happen when artists from different realms come together to create something truly timeless.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight box damage, otherwise in perfect condition***

There are various eye watering stats about the many, many million copies of this album that have been pressed and sold. For each one sold there is almost as many different versions of it, too, if you look on Discogs. But all the hype and huff aside, there is a reason it is one of jazz's most famous records. The sultry modal moods, the masterfully melancholic trumpet sounds Davis conjures and the noir, late night vibe are all perfectly realised and universally understood. Without it, music at large, let alone jazz, would sound very different. For real fans, this super deluxe, clear vinyl pressing is the one and only you need.

Review: This is a big collection of eight 12"s, a poster and in sept for only the most ardent Depeche Mode fan. The collection features faithfully reproduced original artwork and audio masters and all singles first released on CD singles during 1997. This is an ongoing single Series that will apparently continue over the years so that eventually all recordings previously only available on CD will make their way to wax. This instalment features big remixes from legendary names like CJ Bolland, Kruder + Dorfmeister , Underworld and Jedi Knights amongst many more.

Review: Where do you start with a band like Depeche Mode? Easily up there with the most influential British live acts of the late-20th Century, and early-mid-21st - a term we specifically use because their work spans so many genres, from synth pop and new wave to alt and dance rock - the fact just one of their records can garner the kind of reverence that can produce 33 remixes by some of the most respected names in electronic sounds says more than we ever could even if this paragraph went on forever.

Here we have it, then, definitive collection of repurposed and rethought songs from the 2001 LP, Exciter. Veering from the deep proggyness of Danny Tenaglia's take on 'I Feel Loved', through Dave Clarke's breakneck sledgehammer-yet-spacey techno interpretation of 'Dream On', broad sounds would be putting it mildly indeed. Other highlights including the lucid downbeat of Bertrant Burgalat, epic dance metal of DJ Muggs, and sparse, stargazing atmospheres of Isan Falling Leaf.

Review: It's hard to know whether to bother reviewing this release at all, or simply opt for the following summary: Depeche Mode, titans of synth and one of the UK's most important bands of the late-20th Century (and today), offer a vast collection of tracks from their 2005 album, Playing the Angel, remixed by a host of massive names from the dance and electronic world.

Still not convinced? OK, how about this - Depeche Mode x Jacques Le Cont, M83, Sasha, Tiefschwarz, Tiga, Michael Mayer, Metope, Alter Ego, Robag Wruhme, Goldfrapp, Telex and more. With so much happening and such variety on offer within, it's probably best to hit play on the lot and see what takes your fancy, smart money being on all of them. Either that, or just go with your gut and buy before you try.

Review: The vast array of Depeche Mode originals cover plenty of ground and many years of hard and critically acclaimed work. As such they're a gold mine for artists looking to add their own spin and plenty of the most ear-grabbing of those radio, dub and club mixes are collected together here on a rather epic seven slabs of wax in one bumper box set with a poster and digital download. Works by contemporary artists like Trentemoller and Justus Kohncke sit next to techno titans like Ben Klock, trance mainstays such as Sander Van Doorn and even EDM stars like Laidback Luke. A varied mix with something for everyone.

Review: Yves Deruyter has spent forty years as a pioneering force in dance music; kown for his huge sets and anthemic musical procurements, his trajectory follows a familiar arc as an early tooth-cutter on Belgium's underground scene heralding later international recognition. His hits like 'Rave City' and 'Calling Earth' shook the earliest and staidest foundations of trance. To celebrate his career, a new ten-vinyl compilation celebrating Yves' work here proves that relevance isn't about trends - it's about a distinctive sound and an undying connection to the dancefloor.

Review: While it's been 13 years since the tragic passing of one of the greatest rock and metal vocalists of our time, the legacy left behind by Ronnie James Dio serves as unwavering testament to the man's aura, character and prowess, even up to his final recordings which make up this collector's box set. Featuring the final four albums recorded under his own name, all housed in a sideloading box with newly created art on five 180g coloured LPs (1996's Angry Machines on Halloween orange with black marble, 2000's Magica on transparent blood red and black smoke, 2002's Killing The Dragon on transparent yellow with black marble and 2004's Master Of The Moon on electric blue with milky clear marble, plus the rare Electra single on a cobalt blue 7", the epic collection coincides with the upcoming release of Dio: Dreamers Never Die; the first authorised career-spanning documentary centred around the iconic frontman.

Review: One of the best-selling albums of all time, Hotel California could be considered the pinnacle of American rock, at least in terms of success and sales. Ranked the 118th Greatest Album of All Time by Rolling Stone, certified by RIAA as the third best-selling LP in history, and considered the foundation on which the Golden State's mid-70s music scene was built, the 1976 landmark is a music staple immune to shifts in trends, eras, and styles. Fearlessly addressing the chaos and consequences of American life, its songs remain strikingly prescient and gain credence with each passing day. Now reissued as a box set by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab; mastered from the original analog master tapes; pressed on MoFi SuperVinyl, and limited to 17,500 numbered copies.

Review: It would be fair to say that Box is something of an epic. A lusciously packaged celebration of Wolfgang Voigt's acclaimed late 90s work under the Gas alias, it contains all four of the producer's iconic albums stretched across ten slabs of wax, and a quartet of CDs. The package also includes a couple of other obscurities - "Tal '90", originally included on an old compilation, and 1999 single 'Oktember' - to make it a near-complete collection of the artist's impeccable output. If you have any interest at all in ambient techno, dub techno or the development of the Cologne sound, it should be an essential purchase.

Review: In true prog fashion, on their 1974 album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Genesis went for the double-length album. It was devised around a concept Peter Gabriel had telling the tale of Puerto Rican youth from New York City going on a journey of discovery and while it's framed as the last album of the classic - some say true - Genesis line-up before Gabriel's departure, it's attained a fan-favourite status not least for the depth and breadth the band explored. Now the album is getting reissued as a four-vinyl audiophile edition in a gatefold sleeve as part of the 75th anniversary of Atlantic Records.

Review: This is a very special and exclusive new version of what is a sonnet cold classic album from the annals of jazz history. Few albums hold the prestige of Getz/Gilberto which was released in 1964 and is a special collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz, guitarist Joao Gilberto, and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim which very much represents a pinnacle moment in the fusion of jazz and bossa nova. Across its ten tracks, the album weaves a mesmerisng tapestry of melody and rhythm, casting a spell that continues to captivate listeners over half a century later. At the heart lies the symbiotic relationship between two musical giants: Stan Getz, the virtuosic tenor saxophonist renowned for his velvety tone and lyrical phrasing and Joao Gilberto, the Brazilian guitarist and vocalist whose soft, intimate delivery epitomizes the essence of bossa nova.

Review: This four-LP set captures a legendary Grateful Dead performance, a show that band archivist Dick Latvala considered the pinnacle of their Spring 1977 tour. Even with eight songs omitted from the original CD release, the setlist here is a treasure trove of Dead classics and rarities, showcasing the band's improvisational prowess and their ability to create transcendent live experiences. A phenomenal 'Help on the Way'/'Slipknot!'/'Franklin's Tower' sequence follows a definitive rendition of 'Sugaree' and a terrific 'The Music Never Stopped', with Phil Lesh's bass leading the way. But the true magic lies in the extended medley that spans sides E, F, and G. After the rarely performed 'Sunrise', a sequence of 'Estimated Prophet', 'Eyes of the World', 'Wharf Rat', 'Terrapin Station', and 'Morning Dew' takes the listener on a journey through the heart of the Dead's improvisational universe. Jerry Garcia's soaring guitar work on 'Morning Dew' reaches breathtaking heights, showing true virtuosity and the band's ability to create moments of pure sonic bliss.

Review: This is an enduring, pristinely-recorded live album by the psychedelic rock band Grateful Dead, recorded at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington, D.C. on June 10, 1973. Now appearing as a whopping eight-disc LP, the record rightly documents the entire concert, which lasted over four hours and spanned four sets of music - including a guest appearance by Dickey Betts and Butch Trucks from the Allman Brothers Band. The band's diverse and improvisational style is heard across songs cosmic jams, blues-folk twangings and experimental explorations, be they 'Dark Star' or 'Sugar Magnolia. And that's not to mention the Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, and Marty Robbins covers on there to boot.

This anniversary edition enriches the original with unreleased demos, live performances, and alternate takes to offer a deeper insight into the album's creation. Tracks like 'Holiday' and 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' still resonate, while the added material highlights the band's creative process.

Review: American Idiot marked a pivotal moment in Green Day's career, propelling them to new heights both commercially and creatively. The album, released in 2004, combines punk energy with a bold narrative, delivering a politically charged rock opera that resonated with a generation. Its mix of rebellious spirit and introspective lyrics touched on themes of disillusionment, suburban angst, and the search for identity. Tracks like the explosive title song and 'Holiday' channel raw defiance, while 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' and 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' showcase the band's ability to craft emotional ballads with wide appeal. The ambitious multi-part suites 'Jesus of Suburbia' and 'Homecoming' are daring, theatrical pieces that added depth to the album's story arc. Billie Joe Armstrong's sharp songwriting and the band's tight, dynamic sound made American Idiot a modern classic. Its balance of punk rebellion and mainstream accessibility cemented Green Day's place as one of the defining rock bands of the 2000s.

Review: The Fallout videogames depict an alternate reality in which nuclear fallout has ravaged much of the US - its real-world settings like Nevada lends the series an urgent mystery. While the latest instalment, Fallout 76, was near-universally panned by critics, that hardly detracts from its soundtrack by Inon Zur, the franchise's in-house composer from the beginning. Zur crafts a sensitive, heartfelt and scenic LP through which it becomes possible to imagine the chance of a renewed world after the apocalypse, using our ears alone.

Review: Michael Jackson's Off The Wall remains a pivotal release in his career and a hallmark of late 70s music. Produced by Quincy Jones, this album marks Jackson's transformation into the King of Pop, showcasing a blend of funk, disco and r&b that resonates with an enduring freshness. Tracks like 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' and 'Rock With You' exemplify Jackson's unparalleled ability to merge infectious grooves with sophisticated pop. The Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab reissue, celebrating its 40th anniversary, captures the album's original vibrancy with precision. This pressing addresses some issues found in previous versions, such as excessive treble and cymbal crunching, but shines with solid bass response and clear midrange. The Apple Music Hi-Res stream offers an even more refined experience, with taut bass and exceptional clarity that highlights Jackson's vocal talent and the album's detailed production. for many, Off The Wall encapsulates Jackson's peak creativity and artistic vision.

This one is particularly steep, but then reissues like this special edition really don't come along every day, sporting iconic clear wax and beautifully designed booklet. Whether that's enough to win you over probably depends on a couple of things (do you already own the record, for example), but we can safely say for the purposes of this write-up, all that is pretty irrelevant.

What really matters is the music itself - because that's what people are really buying into here. And yes, about 30 seconds into 'Purple Haze' you feel the magic start to take hold. That utterly inimitable hybrid sound that's somewhere between blues and raw, expressive heavy rock, the sound of pure possession of spirit. Then the rest of the album takes it away. Still timeless, still priceless. Well, sort of.

Review: Norah Jones have travelled far from her debut album in 2002, but it would be tough for her to match the knockout success she found with that first canny fusion of pop, jazz, country and soul. She won five Grammys for the certified diamond Come Away With Me, including Record Of The Year and Best New Artist. Listening back after all this time the big hits 'Don't Know Why' and the title track sound as spellbinding as ever, and now Blue Note are issuing this special four-vinyl edition with a mammoth amount of unreleased tracks, session takes and alternate versions. For Jones fans, of which there are literally millions, this will be hard to resist.

Review: Where do you start with Carole King? From her reign as the most successful female songwriter in the UK album charts from 1962 to 2005, a staggering achievement for any foreigner, to the New York-born artist's claim of charting 118 Billboard Hot 100 tracks in the US at the time of writing, some of which were written during her tenure as a scribe at the Big Apple's Brill Building, often cited as the centre of the American pop industry during the latter half of the 20th Century.

Focusing on her own work, though, and by 2022 we've had no less than 25 full length releases from King, with Tapestry her second, and without question one of her finest hours. Songs like '(You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman', and 'You've Got A Friend' remain timeless examples of what timeless pop music sounded like in decades when tracks regularly had a shelf-life well beyond a year or two.

Review: Klaus Nomi’s legacy is a mixed affair. On one hand the German countertenor and performer is considered a quirky novelty figure with a falsetto voice and a tangled catalogue of arch pop and weirdo electronics, but to those who recognise his distinctive contributions he was a bold, visionary artist taken too soon as one of the first celebrity victims of the AIDS pandemic. This exhaustive box set gathers together the three albums Nomi released through his tragically short career, two studio albums and live recording, plus a collection released in 1983 entitled Encore. It’s a fitting tribute to a daring talent who might have become a household name given more time on this earth.

Review: Byard Lancaster's The Complete Palm Recordings 1973-1974 is a definitive 7LP box set celebrating the Philadelphia jazz virtuoso's groundbreaking work. This comprehensive collection features Lancaster's four influential albums released on Jef Gilson's Palm RecordsiUs, Mother Africa, Exactement, and Funny Funky Rib Cribiplus the exclusive standalone edition of Love Always, a captivating 15-minute modal jazz piece. Lancaster, known for his innovative approach, teamed up with prominent figures like Sylvin Marc, Steve McCall, and Clint Jackson III during these sessions. Each album features Lancaster's dynamic range, from the Coltrane-inspired sounds on Exactement to the funk-infused grooves of Funny Funky Rib Crib. The inclusion of Love Always highlights Lancaster's remarkable modal improvisations, complemented by a stellar lineup including Jean-Francois Catoire and Keno Speller. The box set includes all original albums, meticulously restored and remastered. It features a four-page portfolio, an exclusive one-sided 12" EP with a screen print, and a 20-page booklet with rare photos and an in-depth exploration of Lancaster's Parisian years by Pierre Crepon. This collection not only honours Lancaster's legacy but also offers a deep look into his most creative period.

Review: Before the mythos, the excess and the imperial dominance one normally associates with Led Zeppelin, there was an ineffable chemistry and magical spark that always elevated these four Brit musos far above the rank and file of the late-'60s and early-'70s rock scene, and this exhaustive compendium of live and session material from their early days makes this gloriously manifest. With seven new tracks added to the 1997 version, the combination of slinky grace and Herculean brute force that characterises this very special band has rarely sounded more vibrant and joyful to behold than on otherwise unreleased tracks like 'Sunshine Woman' and 'The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair', and it's notable that every one of the five versions of 'Communication Breakdown' herein is independently worthy of your attention. Essential.

Review: Les Claypool is of course best known for spearheading Primus, the twisted funk metal pioneers that put slap bass at the top of the agenda. As a virtuoso musician with the most inquisitive of minds, Claypool naturally explored many other musical avenues beyond Primus' oddly-angled jams, and this box set does a damn fine job of summarising those exploits through the lens of his Prawn Records label. Spread across seven LPs, we're treated to remastered versions of projects such as The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, Colonel Claypool's Bucket Of Bernie Brains and The Fancy Band. You're as likely to wind up in weirdo jazz hoedowns as funked-out rock music, but in between these niches there are so many other undefinable surprises in store.

Review: Second time around for Madonna's Finally Enough Love box set, which celebrates the iconic artist's unique achievement of notching up no less than 50 number ones on the Billboard Dance chart - the first artist in history to do so. In effect, it's a celebration of her Madgesty's links with dance music culture, showcasing 40 years of popular reworks of her biggest hits, presented in a 'rainbow edition' box set where each of the six slabs of wax is pressed onto different coloured vinyl. So, alongside classic early hits and reworks from 1987 remix album You Can Dance, we get revisions by everyone from Junior Jasquez, Jellybean, Shep Pettinone and Pet Shop Boys, to William Orbit, Aviici, Felx De Housecat, Jacques Lu Cont and Tracey Young. Madonna-ologists assemble!

Review: 69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields is an audacious feat that toes the line between brilliance and sheer audacity. Clocking in at three hours, this magnum opus is a sprawling exploration of love in all its forms. Stephin Merritt and his collaborators craft a diverse sonic landscape, ranging from giddy lust to resignation and despair, and from genre exercises to archetypal Magnetic Fields songs. The album's sheer scale may initially seem daunting, but Merritt's exceptional songwriting and the band's eclectic instrumentation ensure that each track holds its own. The individual songs offermany moments of small epiphanies and emotional resonance. 25 years since it was first released, 69 Love Songs continues to gain new fans and make original ones keep coming back.

Review: When it was first released, George Michael's Older was something of a shock to those who were used to his chart-topping hits of yore. Certainly, 1990's Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 was a mature and expansive album from one of pop's brightest talents, but six years later Older took a moodier turn on tracks like 'Jesus To A Child' and 'Spinning The Wheel'. There are of course some big bangers too, from the slinky funk of 'Fastlove' to 'Star People', but this was a turning point in Michael's career which finally delivered the creative freedom he'd always so vically called out for. This expansive special edition of the album comes with additional edits, remixes and unreleased tracks to complete the picture for a landmark slice of British pop music.

Review: The 1971 classic album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, Blue is widely thought by many music lovers to be one of the best albums of all time. Already well into her career by the time of its release - it's her fourth album - it was certainly Mitchell's best yet, reflecting a period in her life where she took a break from touring and live performing to focus on creation. Its confessional and poetic lyrics, not to mention the distinctively groggy yet idyllic guitar and piano playing on songs like 'All I Want', 'River', 'A Case Of You', heard Mitchell encapsulate the various milestones, Renaissances and turning points of the contemporary rock landscape of the 1970s, into a singular LP.

Review: Joni Mitchell's Ladies of the Canyon is one of the great albums that captures the essence of the late '60s counterculture with poetic grace and introspective depth. Released in 1970, the record blends folk, pop, and jazz influences while showcasing Mitchell's unique artistry. Iconic tracks like 'Big Yellow Taxi,' 'Woodstock,' and 'The Circle Game' highlight her sharp lyrical wit and melodic inventiveness. Overall, the music paints vivid portraits of life in Laurel Canyon and celebrates themes of love, loss, and social change. Mitchell's ethereal vocals and intricate guitar work make Ladies of the Canyon an essential listen that cemented her legacy as a pioneering singer-songwriter.

Review: 30 years on, the power of Nevermind has never dulled. Of course it's the most commercially appealing of Nirvana's albums, but it's no less daring for it no matter how many times you've heard it. Well, how to toast an album as world-changing as this one? By going all out on the lavish vinyl edition of course, which in this case means a mammoth eight-disc 180gm vinyl edition with a 40-page hardback book. If you want an altar at which to worship one of the definitive moments in popular music, this authoritative release is surely all the plinth you need.
