Shark Story Of The Century EP
Shark Story Of The Century EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CY 003. Rel: 14 Dec 15

Industrial/Noise
Enrique - "Dissociate"
Beau Wanzer - "Weasels"
Esplendor Geometrico - "Rotor" (1988)
Esplendor Geometrico - "Rotor" (Broken English club remix)
Prostitutes - "Cuyahoga Frankenstein"
Review: The Contort Yourself tradition of electronics pioneers, modern masters and new names continues into CY003. Enrique comes under that latter banner. The Hot Releases alumnus introduces the EP with the piston pounded belligerence of Dissociate. L.I.E.S. and Nation veteran Beau Wanzer continues this stroll into aggression. Weasels is an upturned work of techno. Nuts, bolts and the grisly inner workings are on show for this fast paced floor mangler. Spain's industrial stalwarts Esplendor Geometrico open the flip. From 1988 the grit of the factory floor is carried into Rotor. A touch of the mystical is injected, chants looped through the hypnotic rhythms in this simmering classic. Broken English Club is on hand to rework Rotor into a guttering piece of Electro tainted machine music. If you're hoping for some respite, think again. Prostitutes (Diagonal) closes with the cruel pummelling percussion of Cuyahoga Frankenstein. A brutal, beefy and brilliant 12.

Flesh Flush (6:25)
Take Your Trash Out (4:06)
Morning Pain (9:43)
Review: Lo-fi techno specialist Beau Wanzer brings the heat once more on Robert Bergman's ever more impressive Dutch label Brew. He wastes no time in getting down to a raw and arresting groove on "Flesh Flush", which has freaky voices stitched into the high pressure drums. "Take Your Trash Out" is murky, dirty techno heard through a filthy sonic filter. It's perfect for grotty warehouse spaces and last of all "Morning Pain" gets brilliantly unhinged and wonky, with some manic lead synths taking you down the rabbit hole. This is discomforting techno for unsettling dance floors.

Beefhearts (4:06)
Drew Is A Dog Eater (4:38)
Seedless Grins (8:15)
Beaches Of Leeches (2:57)
Review: Given the DIY ethic at the heart of both Nation and LIES, its little surprise that Beau Wanzer, a close associate of both labels, has chosen to self-release much of his vast archive of material. Following a superb debut LP last year, four more cuts from the Wanzer studios are presented on this untitled 12". Overall it's a record that is quite typical of Wanzer's solo work, with vintage hardware and nightmarish textures combining to create a quartet of end-of-days jams. There's plenty of variety within the four tracks, though; contrast, for example, the industrial-influenced, off-key techno throb of "Beaches of Leeches", with the wonky experimental curiosity "Drew Is A Dogeater". Best of all, though, is opener "Beefhearts", a suitably distorted, gritty and aggressive foray into off-kilter electro territory.

Outside Auto
Two Orders
Balls Of Steel
Review: Mr Beau Wanzer has already been responsible for some memorable music in 2013 as part of both Mutant Beat Dance and Streetwalker, issuing releases on Light Sounds Dark and Cititrax that rank amongst the favourites of the Juno review staff. Having previously appeared on LIES as part of MBD, Wanzer now makes his full debut with this much awaited self titled three track EP. Ever since Ron Morelli dropped it on a Benji B show earlier this year, the clamour for "Balls Of Steel" has steadily grown to boiling point and the track sounds all the more impressive running up the stylus of a 1210 than it does on shoddy iPlayer bitrate. Based around a unique vocal hook, Wanzer's basically done a Florian Kupfer and delivered unto LIES a hit track that shouldn't really be a hit track. The functional rhythmic nature of "Balls Of Steel" is replicated in the scratchy "Two Orders" whilst "Outside Auto" is a lumbering EBM number reminiscent of Wanzer's work with Traxx.

Beau Wanzer - "The Table Scrap" (5:51)
Hieroglyphic Being - "This Is The Right Time In Human History 2 Be Stupid" (10:27)
Review: There is a ton of sonic scuzz and frosty electronic texture to both cuts on this new limited 12" from Natural Sciences. And that is frankly to be expected when you are dealing with these two artists - the long-time LIEs associate Beau Wanzer goes first with the fucked up drums and gnarly synths, wiry electronics and dark vocal mutterings of 'The Table Scrap'. On the flip is Chicago noise specialist Hieroglyphic Being with 'This Is The Right Time In Human History 2 Be Stupid.' It's a lo-fi and fuzzy world of busted drum loops and anxious synths.

Rhythm Track #39
Something To Tide You Over
Untitled: Russian Torrent Versions CCCP 05
Review: The mysterious Russian Torrent Versions returns for another salvo of grime-encrusted vinyl-only house excursions, this time coming from Nation affiliate Beau Wanzer and the unknown NJB. Wanzer is at the helm for the A-side, with "Rhythm Track #39" providing some strangely downtempo rhythms with some ghostly sample ambience in the background, while "Something To Tide You Over" provides a more throbbing cut which feels like its tunnelling deep into the fabric of space. On the flip, NJB provides an untitled piece of industrial-edged techno that pulls no punches with its pummelling 4/4 kick and sheet metal melodies.
