Bitches Brew Nu Soul (12")

Review: A supremely cool sampler from nu-soul label Bitches Brew that features a wealth of different talents coming together to make some sweet and smooth treats. Opener Jam features MC Chickaboo (Soul 2 Soul, Goldie, Timo Maas) on the vocals and Attica Blues' Charlie Dark on the remix, turning it into a lowdown "dubstrumental" complete with rollicking drums and some seriously squelchy bass. Jinadu's Natural Thing gets remixed by broken beat hero Domu and it's a typically enthralling workout of crisp jazzy drums and beautiful floating melodies placed delicately on top.
Label founder Cosmo weighs in with the gorgeous Mistaken, done under her Ch'i alias and with vocalist Billie Godfrey up front on the mic, turning in a deliciously melancholy yet powerful vocal, backed up with some Roy Ayres-style vibes action for good measure. The Broken mix of Jinadu's Turning The Tide is another revelation, mixing up Rhodes stabs and some precision beats along with a vocal that bores it's way into your memory bank after a couple of listens.
Two standout cover versions round off this excellent compilation - Bamba take on Linda Williams' jazz-funk classic Elevate Your Mind and also turn in a Latin-flavoured version of Stevie Wonder's The Real Thing. Both of them are faithful and clearly done with a lot of reverence to the originals - a testament to a label that has soul running through it's veins as this collection shows.

Review: "Star Libre Remixes" is an amazing package with the incredible original version from DJ Mochizuki and mixes from the legendary Idjut Boys. Review: Last year, Mother Tongue Records released Madre Lingua, an album of all-star collaborations between broken beat and deep house musicians and producers helmed by Verona-based Brit Patrick Gibin. This 12" updates two of the tracks from the set, with Gibin once again to the fore. On side A, he joins forces with long-time friend and studio buddy Kaidi Tatham to remix EDB and Gary Superfly's 'Pressure'. Their tack is bouncy and synth-heavy, with spacey, out-there lead lines and intergalactic-sounding pads rising above a Maurice Fulton-as-Syclops style bassline and loose-limbed house drums. On the flip, Marc De Clive-Lowe remixes his own collaboration with Gibin and Tommasso Capelleto, 'Apollo', brilliantly joining the dots between spacey jazz-funk and ambient on a superb, beat-free 'Dreamscape' mix.

Review: Cinnaman (Rush Hour, Young Buck) and Jay Scarlett (Spacek Soundsystem) teamed up to compile an album dedicated to new developments in beats produced by the up-and coming as well as celebrated producers from all ages and backgrounds. These people are mostly brought together by the mighty internet, where they share and compete (with) their beats. These producers all have at least one thing in common; their love for beats. Cinnaman and Jay Scarlett have now brought together an unique selection of these beats, already coined Beatstrumentals. We packaged it as Beat Dimensions. The first two album samplers (total of three) are strictly limited to 500 copies and total 10 beats. Many new comers here, like VeeBeeO, Super Smorky Soul and Pursuit Grooves, but also known producers like Steve Spacek (as Black Pocket), Up Hygh, Aardvarck and Flying Lotus (as Flyandsam).

Review: The second sampler for Rhythm Section International's fifth anniversary compilation has landed, and like its predecessor is packed to the rafters with must-check gear. Duke Hugh kicks things off with the short-but-sweet, Rhodes-powered soundscape "Zoe", before Research Club delivers some bubbly pitched-down acid ("Cafe Iguana") and Paula Tepe jams out some quirky proto-house goodness ("Panamericana"). Over on side B Jad Lee (as Jad & The) takes over with some deep, reggae-influenced breakbeat house, before handing the baton to Shy One with the deep, bruk-up dreaminess of "House Party". Session Victim provides a fittingly strong conclusion with the quirky deep house drowsiness of "Gheister".
