Spiritual Connection (feat Baba Ras) (5:01)
Brown Walls (parts 1 & 2) (5:01)
Review: A year has passed since Visceral Vibrations last shook our soul with Hysee's "Circular Dispute", but US indie returns with an absolute peach of a 12" from Turin's rootsical professor Babe Roots. "Spiritual Connection" swaggers with a swampy trippy groove that offers caverns of space for Baba Ras's spoken word sermon. "Brown Walls" is a game of two halves as part one sets the ambient mystic scene before part two ignites with broadsword kicks shudder with the perfect amount of reverb. Feel the vibrations.

BAR Theme (Wolf Muller remix) (5:56)
Anjali Reverse (Pharaohs remix) (5:59)
Dexy's Alrobe (Orson remix) (5:36)
Adios (Diva remix) (7:12)
Review: Italic has been representing the electronic scene in Cologne and surrounding areas since before the turn of the century, playing house to stylistically ambiguous outfits such as Kreidler, Stabil Elite and the many different projects of Stefan Schwander. Last year saw Italic usher in the BAR project of Stabil Elite's Lucas Croon and Christina Irrgang, with their self-titled LP turning out a sharply informed blend of new wave, synth pop and the finest in German kosmische traditions. To accompany the album, Italic have called on a cast of artists specifically split between Dusseldorf and Los Angeles to remix BAR. Pharoahs take "Anjali Reverse" and turn it into a gently lilting Balearic vignette, while noted German dubstepper Orson nudges "Dexy's Alrobe" into a spacious half-step chiller. Diva Dompe, daughter of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins no less, creates a bewitching version of "Adios" that sounds beamed straight out of Sunday morning, but for pure flair and unmistakable groove Wolf Muller's take on "BAR Theme" has us especially excited!

Rollercoasters Of The Heart
So Cruel
Review: After seriously impressing with the debut sounds of Andy Mac last time round, Bristol imprint Punch Drunk step it up a notch further with this monumental release from Bass Clef. The local hero turned Hackney import graces our shelves with his first release in 2011 and it's totally been worth the wait, unveiling the rather glorious sounds of "Rollercoasters Of The Heart". There's an undeniably throwback nod to the euphoric days of rave gone by thanks to the swirls of lysergia tinged stabs and stretched out vox, but it's how Bass Clef marries them to a crisp groove of rolling sub bass and crisp off kilter house drums that has us hooked. Complementing this, "So Cruel" brings the mood down markedly, revolving around a half time swagger and bouncing subs dipped in purple menace which are the perfect foil for the requisite looped up chanteuse. It's the searing synth flourishes that jettison through the track without announcement that lift "So Cruel" to somewhere near the title track in our affections.

Fictitious Nostalgia Album Sampler

Wait For Me (feat Alia Fresco)
UL90
Jetliner
Review: Having already graced Copenhagen's TEAL imprint twice before with their deep, hybrid sound of dubstep and minimal D&B, the producer returns with a sampler offering a taste of what to expect from their debut album Fictitious Nostalgia. "Wait For Me" sees a collaboration with singer Alia Fresco, its soulful textures are reminiscent of the producer's debut release "Syncopy", seeing half stepping rhythms joined with lush acoustic textures. The track is joined by two tracks exclusive to the compilation; "UL90" employs a darker tone, with Autonomic-style D&B rhythms joined by deep, tunnelling subs, while "Jetliner" sees gaseous synth textures joined by some thick bass stabs and weighty organic drums. As with previous Beastie Respond releases, it's an impressive collection of forward thinking dubstep.

Review: Rinse France branches out with a brand new label of its own and who better to inaugurate it than Paris-based Beatrice M. The producer makes a knowing nod to dubstep's golden era on this debut with the first version of 'Magic.' It is built on steppy rhythms with seriously wobbling basslines that are all-consuming. Glitchy effects and shimmering synths finish it in style and leave you dreaming of dubstep dances gone by. The B-side is a Techno Mix that reimagines the original with a driving four-on-the-floor rhythm and plenty of richly atmospheric pads.

Review: Beau operates at the sharp end of the UK electronic underground and creates an immersive, dark ambient sound that is influenced by trailblazers like Burial. His soundscapes combine ethereal textures with moody rhythms and that is very much the case here on Lacuna, his new album for Feat PLAtes. It is full of roomy sounds, icy glass synths, smeared pads, late-night moods and evocative atmospheres that draw you in ever deeper, sometimes looking over your shoulder, always lost in deep thought. A real lost tape from the short-lived night bus genre, you could say.

Hurt Me (4:42)
Review: A phenomenal double A right here from Bengal Sound as he returns with his first new material since 2022. As always with this sleek moustachioed artist, the wait is definitely worth it. 'Red Diamond' weaves and waves with a woozy harmonic that spirals in a classic emotional arpeggio that builds on every 32. 'Hurt Me' has a similarly alluring pull into its universe but with added string samples. All hooky and poignant and played in chords that have a strange disarming harmonic. The only hurting will be if you miss this 12".

Review: Bengal Sound is a rising star in the Bristol bass scene and now he makes another mighty fine statement with this two tracker on Wych, the increasingly essential label run by K-LONE. This one comes after his various standout tunes from self-released cassettes fusing dusty old Bollywood samples to red hot club bangers. 'Solace' is the opener and is heavy on the rubbing and cavernous bass with icy leads and on the flip is 'On My Mind' which is just as atmospheric.

Review: Bandulu strike again! This time with fellow kindred system spirit Bengal Sound. Two more totally disarming, otherworldly experiments, if you've just returned from Outlook then you'll already know what damage these are causing. "Never Mind" warms up with graveyard stroll before opening up into a strange shimmering organ riff that doesn't quite sound as if it's made on this planet. "Short Stay" meanwhile twists up the percussion and drum arrangements, making them almost breathe with trippy toxicity and a wooziness you just can't find in any other style of music. One of a kind and already teased out a few months ago. This new batch won't last long.

20/20 VIP
The Core
The Prey
Review: While the cover artwork may make Benton look like a moody former member of an R&B boy band, the music contained on Reflections is as robustly underground as you'd expect. Moving from Burial-ish paranoid atmospherics to deep dubstep-soul via a series of sparse, moody and emotion-rich soundscapes, it portrays the London-based producer as a man for whom the simple pleasures of form and function are just not enough. Along the way, there are growling, murky floorfillers (check the hissing "Herman's Hideout" and "Defect Mind"), dubwise steppers ("20/20 VIP") and occasional blasts of piano-laden beauty (the intricate "We're Both Lost").

Zardoz
Review: N Type's Wheel & Deal camp finally, finally drop Benton's killer "20/20"! The cinematic creeper has been racking up views on YouTube since the turn of 2011, and it's not hard to see why the clamour for release is there. Steadily building from its misty beginnings "20/20" excels at subtly combining stripped down steppah riddims with cavernous bass with sly ripples of spectral utterings and scraping echoed synth lines. The flip borrows more than the title from the mid 70s Connery classic Zardoz, lifting the iconic speech from the godlike figurehead central to the film and dropping it amidst a perma snapping purple tinged half step face screwer!

BBS Madness
Review: **REPRESS** Kicking off a self-motivated label as a vessel for his up-to-the-minute beats, Benton follows up releases for Box Clever and Black Box with this razor-sharp distillation of old skool rave touches and tight modern production. "The Callin" works around a tense break triggered at a teasing angle to keep the groove limber at all times, although unafraid to melt away into blissed out chords at the appropriate juncture. "Airtight" rides on a similar rhythmic roll, although the atmospherics spell this one out as an overall darker concern. "BBS Madness" lets a little techno bleed into the frame with an even more taut deployment of forthright drum hooks that cross neatly through a multitude of styles in what should make for a prime crossover cut.

Review: German producer Bhed takes charge of the ninth EP on the vital Trusik label. His mastery of ambient, dub, techno depths and bass weight are all present and correct here, never more so than on the fantastic opener "Eighteenhundred". Taking up the whole of one side of wax, it is more than deserving of that indulgence as it slowly trips through floating pads, icy hi hats and supple rhythms that soothe the mind, body and soul. "Apatheia" is a more edgy track which is just as cavernous but has you looking over your shoulder, and closing cut "East" is a pure and dreamy dub beauty.

Review: Biome's at the top of his game with this new EP on Deep, Dark & Dangerous, which is the label's first of the year. It's a masterclass in dark dubstep wizardry that is expertly put together across four compelling tunes. Opener 'The Joker' is a haunting tune with a whispered vocal and cavernous grooves. The icy hits are to die for and the low end wobble is irresistible. 'Boxed' then gets heavy with more crashing hits and fizzing, dystopian synths. There is plenty of weight in 'Monster' and its poised drums and big drops and last of all 'Never Listen' is a fine example of tension and release that keeps you locked.

Review: Manchester-based producer Biome has been cultivating his own distinct brand of pummelling, stripped-back minimalist dubstep for over six years now, gaining plaudits and accolades for his 12" output on labels such as Osiris, Black Box and Macabre Unit. The Cromos EP represents Biome's label debut for the mighty Tempa and brandishes a triptet of tracks that really showcase the full range of the producer's sound. Final track "Delta" is an undoubted highlight, a real vicious exercise in achieving the maximum pressure from the minimum of elements with little more than hard, brusque and broken rhythms and deadly bass utilised.

Review: Longstanding Manchester murk merchant Biome returns to Deep Heads' abyss-peering On The Edge series with three more timeless constructions: "Turn" taps into his mystical UKG palette with lingering percussive rolls and dreamy late-2000s synth strikes, "Remembrance" is a loose-jointed hat-tip to proper deep house with its velvet chords and jazzy shuffle while "Niagra" closes the show on a pacey tech tip that wouldn't have gone amiss on Moving Shadow in the mid 90s. Review: Biome's been making more frequent appearance on Macabre Unit, and they've struck gold several times over. "Black Widow" looks set to be one of his biggest to date. A pulsating, bouncing-ball bass runs amid the stark half steps that gradually develop a polyrhythmic mind of their own. "Quasar" is stripped back further again with a trippy kick that pounds a mean message directly into your temples. You can't fight it; the incessant hand drum loop will drive you into a shamanic state before you know it. "Mystery" is the hype track of the trio. Bordering into dancehall techno territory with another nagging hand drum loop, this is one relentlessly trippy beast

Review: Countering his recent grumpy, techno-minded EP "Black Widow" with three shimmering sonic gems, "Deep Heads Vol 10" is a triumph of Biome's versatility. "Light" shuffles us through a sweet, deep dream, whispering sweet waspy bass nothings in our ears. "Havana VIP" flips the VIP cliche and instead of making it ruder and stronger, it takes his 2011 trouble-wobbler into a much more sub-aquatic, contemplative pasture. "Nightscape" finishes the set on a naked, mystic note with occasional splashes of crystal pianos. Classic Biome.

Review: It's becoming more and more apparent throughout 2012 that Biome isn't human. He's a blooming machine! There's not been a month this year when he hasn't delivered at least one deep, pensive slice of darkness, be it on Macabre Unit, Smokin Sessions, Osiris or New Moon. Back on the ever-reliable Blackbox he's served up something of a bumper package. Five tracks in total, his balance of stark atmospherics and gruff subs is in full effect. The delicate shades of piano and synth-laced light of "Inner Mind", the subtle croaks and groans of the EP's title track "Two Way", the intricate tribal drum patterns and woozy pads of "First Light"... Biome's production line is running more efficiently than ever. Machine music has never sounded so good.

Review: Patrick Holt aka Biome returns to Dubstep For Deep Heads with a raucous three-tracker! Although categorised as a dubstep producer, Biome is really much more than that and his tracks contain a distinctive air of tribalism, where percolating percussion meets prophetic chanting. "Constant", for example, sees the producer blending waves of acoustic instruments together with broken beats, while "Hold On" takes a 4 Hero kinda beat and spins it around gorgeous atmospherics and stripped-down low-ends. Review: Episcopalian dub (by an artist called Bishop, no doubt) graces our ears in a manner in which we never thought it might; this is 7" number 13 for furtive dub label Challenger Deep, and it truly is a vibe. The interdependent tracks, 'Dub De Societe' and 'Flutes Of Bhutan', provide alternate trakes on the modern, steppers and dubstep incarnations of the dub plodder form, and also inserting emotive underhands through the womp and cohesion. The former outlines a blueprint for the nominal dub diocese, with papally swung drums and synaptic pad surrounds/wavers; the latter track goes snareless, meanwhile, preferring the tricky movements of 'passed 808s and complementary ambiences.

"Aurora Borealis" twinkles with every bit of space-gazing charm as you'd hope while "The Perfect Knowledge" is a defiant march into the unknown driven by a persistent slo-mo techno riff and Clockwork Orange synth orchestral dramatics. "Magnetic Field VIP" is an industrial strength update on his 2013 Paradise Lost cut while "Impedance" brings the story full circle with tumbling organic-feeling drums and a house-like bassline that bounces relentlessly. It's fresh in its fusion of the new with the old and opens with 'U Up', an electro-tinged cut that glides through the cosmos with characterful synth sounds and plenty of colour. This latest DFA 12" pulls together two previously digi only singles from new signing Dan Bodan for the vinyl hungry label completists out there. To the uninitiated, Bodan is a highly tipped Berlin-based singer, songwriter whose productions sound like Arthur Russell doing modern R&B. Of most interest here is the remix of "Anonymous" from White Material co-founder DJ Richard which is similarly sparse, reducing the vocals to mere whispers and coating everything in brooding industrial textures. Do check the flipside Stadium Mix, which is according to DFA is "common shorthand for an amazing producer/remixer we are not allowed to mention for some reason".

This four-tracker from the label hears label heads Peaky and Vel carefully and creatively work in as-yet unknown samples to the stew; some kind of Frankensteinish exclamation on the dubstep A1 laments the feeding of a monster "human brains", while the breakstep A2 'Bacon Dance' hears more timestretched, dystopian vocals amid wobbles. 'Don't' leans more into the kind of melodic dubstep that likes to sample R&B acapellas, and is the most refreshing of the lot.

Review: Rising Leeds producer Breakfake slams down with his first 12" of 2022 with a tune so heavy and all-encompassing it spans two parts. 'No Crime' - a real system tester with a deliciously loose swagger, big dubby vocal elements and a smorgasbord of bass textures that pursue a number of directions across the two versions. Flip for two crucial remixes; Echo maintains that system pressure while Sepia goes on a deep dreamy flavour, all space and massive kickdrums.

Review: Peaky Beats is a great name for a label that serves up such irresistible house and garage jams as it has so far over its first eight EPs. This ninth outing is no less desirable, coming from the in house production team in collaboration with Breakfake. 'Life In Stereo' hits a perfect note between kinetic drums and soulful, jazzy chords deigned to melt the heart. 'Rat City' is more filthy - a warped bassline screws about beneath more sleazy broken beats. 'Chapel Town' brings low end dubstep wobble to the party and 'Dub The Acid' is another filthy dirty skanker with echoing hits and mutant bass.

Review: There's no stopping the gnarly Germanic charms of Bukez right now. The dust hasn't had a hot minute to settle on his Decade Of Weight album and here he is laying the seasick smack down on mothership Deep Medi. "The Main Rule" is a woozy specimen, all tripped out and twisted. "Unknown Force" follows a similarly loose-footed route with more emphasis on the alien atmospheres and multi-textured drums. Make no mistakes; Bukez is bossing right now.

You Dont Belong Here
Pace Yourself
Review: Also known as Germany's Next Top Wobble, Bukez Finezt has taken things next level with "Under Control". Hyped across the board (from deep heads to tear-out boys) as one of the key releases of 2014 so far, this sub-saturated swagger-jam has an ability to sing to all corners of the ever-fractured dubstep floor. Want to go deeper again? Head for "You Don't Belong Here". Wonkier than a wooden legged pirate with gout, it's peppered with spooked SFX and a bass tone so ominous it could raise the Devil himself, Bukez clearly has a dark, dark mind! Finally we hit "Pace Yourself". A percussive hype track with a very cheeky horn sample, all manner of madness has been coded into the vast space between the elements. Minimalist chaos anyone?

The Time Is Now (feat DPRNDRP) (4:14)
Review: The deep dubstep revival continues to roll on and turn out ever more crucial sounds from the underground and back streets. Bukkha's latest for Innamind Recordings is a perfect case in point - it's primed and ready to blow out the basins of any system it is played on. Opener 'Deliverance' has some serious weight to it while the low-end wobbles keep things rolling under crispy, long tailed hits and hissing synth mystery. On the flip is 'The Time Is Now" (feat DPRNDRP)', a more crunchy and broken beat overlaid with squealing synth motifs and bad man vocalisations.

Review: In these times of difficulty and dread we always turn to music, and there can be no better safe space than these deep dub wise meditations courtesy of Spanish studio wizard Bukkha. Featuring the vocal talents of Ranking Joe and melodic flute work of Don Fe, 'Revolution Time' is a heady one with steel plated drums and swaggering kicks. The dub is more paired back and subtle, while 'War Flute' is another gem that pairs flute beauty with drum based heaviness. A second dub rounds out what is a crucial EP.

Review: Buckle up for Bukkha. After years of releases on the likes of ZamZam, Moonshine, Infernal, Dub-Stuy and many other respected 140 stables, American in Spain Evert Cristoff makes his debut on Gourmet with "Sekkle Tune". A bulbous traditional dub-minded piece, complete with melodica flutters, it hits hard like Amit jamming the Scientist. For a more dancefloor-focussed take flip for a shake-up by RDG where the beats add a little more skip while maintaining the raw simplicity of the original. Grubs up.

Review: Lafayette, Louisiana, may not be particularly associated with the bowel-bothering sub-bass and ricocheting drum hits of dubstep. Nevertheless, it's home to Bukkha, a producer whose floor-friendly dubstep releases are shot through with high-grade dub reggae influences. "Ruling Sound", featuring the slick and soulful vocals of Junior Dread, is a perfect example. It's effectively a dubstep/steppers reggae fusion, and a very good one at that. The producer's love of original dub can be heard loud and clear on the accompanying "Ruling Dub", which beefs up the sub-bass whilst ramping up the reverb, delay and tape echo. The flipside TMSV Remix, which boasts crunchier, jungle-influenced breakbeats and even weightier sub-bass, is also pretty nifty.

Review: While Infernal Sounds' releases often come from little-known or previously unheralded dubstep artists, their latest EP is the product of two very experienced producers: sometime Moonshine Recordings regular Bukkha and Californian duo Subtle Mind. Sweet soul vocalist Dutchie lends a hand on A-side "Words", providing a dreamy, emotion-rich focal point above the trio's crunchy rhythm, dub-wise flourishes and booming bass. On the flip, jaunty, flute style melodies flutter around warm chords and an exotic rhythm track on loved-up workout "LAX", before the North American threesome add some snaking sax and clarinet solos to a slightly reworked instrumental take on "Words".

Review: Bunzer0 continues to spin the rich circle of life with "King Lion", a demonically spacious deep dub gem. Twisting the genre's standard halftime drum dynamic with bellows of room amid the anvil kicks, cheek-melting snares and nightmare-level vocal processes. Kahn gets busy on the remix, filling up the space with gunnish militancy. Like an army of robots marching into the apocalypse, this is one of Kahn's heaviest shake-ups to date. Unique.

Boy Sent From Above (13:26)
Review: Burial drops his latest two-tracker on XL, two chaotic breakbeat balancing acts firmly rooted in rushy UK 'ardkore and day-glo 80s freestyle respectively. The A is a nail-biting, cavernous tweak out, which Burial pipes out into the darkest, most paranoid corners of the rave, exhuming frazzled dancers and inducing a queasy euphoria that any seasoned hedonists will recognise all too well. 'Boy Sent From Above', on the other hand seems to chart the passage of an obsessive, icy winter graff mission, with tinny drum machines, saccharine squarewave arpeggio hooks and spraycan samples harking back to the heyday of B-Boy electro, Miami freestyle and NYC breaking with devastating efficacy, albeit seen through Burial's unmistakeable misty-eyed LDN gauze; chrome and black over day-glo. Dreamfear marks yet another welcome switch up in Burial's artistic direction, and makes for one of the most evocative, moving and transporting entries in his much pored-over catalogue.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Repress alert! Wednesday: Hyperdub announce a new three track release from enigmatic producer Burial - his first solo work in four years. Thursday: Said records arrive on Juno doorstep. How's that for service (and secrecy)! The news came just a matter of days after the producer's collaboration with Radiohead front man Thom Yorke and Four Tet arrived on record shelves across the UK and promptly sold out amidst a frenzy of hype. There are three new tracks on offer here, namely "Street Halo", "NYC" and "Stolen Dog". First up "Street Halo" showcases the classic Burial sound; subterranean bass gurgles, trademark clicking beats and barely-there vocal snatches. A sweet childlike vocal pervades the sonic mist on "NYC" while "Stolen Dog" closes out with ethereal vocal harmonies buried deep beneath vinyl crackle. Stunning.

Ashtray Wasp
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Given that his sound has now been referenced, copied and bastardised by countless imitators, is testament to Burial's enduring appeal that the announcement of a new EP on a Sunday in Febuary was enough to shake the online music press out of their collective stupors. As an EP it more than stands up to his previous work, and it may even be better than last year's Street Halo EP - where the brilliance of the title track left the EP quite top-heavy, there's no such complaints on Kindred. If UK garage was the touchpoint for his earlier releases, this EP sees Burial further developing a sound that has few obvious points of comparison, whether it's the savage, gnarled bassline of the title track, or the shambling house of "Loner", characterized by its hollowed out arpeggio and ambient crackle. But it's "Ashtray Wasp" that provides the most breathtaking moment, seeing the producer using the distinct musical language he's created and bringing confident melodic elements into play. Of course such descriptions seem trivial when trying to describe this EP - even for Burial it's far beyond what his peers and imitators could ever imagine making.

Rough Sleeper
Review: *Burial Repress* The double header of Truant/Rough Sleeper is the second EP from Burial in 2012, and arrives with as little fanfare as the superb Kindred EP did early this year. Unlike that more dancefloor focused record however, this EP harks back to the producer's earlier sound. Of course, being two longform compositions clocking in at 12 and 14 minutes respectively, they're hardly conventional works; each utilises the same liberal use of spectral atmospheres, emotive vocal samples, hollow 2-step beats and nods to jungle as we've come to expect from the producer, but with complex structures that come across more like two sides of an old mixtape recorded from a pair of decrepit turntables. Of course being a mixtape from Burial, this is special stuff indeed - consider it an early Christmas present to yourself.
