Velours (4:18)
Crescent (3:16)
Review: Montreal producer and keyboard maestro Anomalie offers a full-MOT servicing of funk-jazz on 'Velours', a choice track that presaged his 2018 EP 'Metropole'. Born of a chilled bedroom jam, the first iteration of this track was uploaded to YouTube in 2017, and utilised stacks of Yamaha pianos as well as sleek, sexily designed sample pads. Anomalie provides a rich, honeyed set of chordophonal can-cans over nothing but a swung backbeat, bringing seemingly boundless phonic fruition from little nutrient. Now the song hears a full reproduction and repackaging in vinyl form via Devins 7s.

Matando Los Chivos (2:53)
Review: Sylvia De Grasse was born in Panama and became a celebrated singer known as "The Queen of the Tamborera" and "The Empress of Panamanian Song." Trained in classical vocal techniques, she began her career at 14, recording for RCA in the tamborera style before her collaboration with pianist Ricardo Fabrega helped popularise the genre that blends Afro-Panamanian and Cuban influences while fostering Panamanian cultural pride. De Grasse's marriage to Dominican singer Jose Chapuseaux led to the formation of the trio Los Alegres Tres, with whom she toured extensively, and her recordings, especially the 1960 album La Cita, showcase her operatic range and deep connection to Latin American folklore. This new 7" offers up two of her finest moments to get lost in.

Duffer (3:29)
Duffer In F (3:23)
Review: Galt MacDermot's Duffer is a delightful 7" that transports listeners back in time with its nostalgic charm. On Side-1, 'Duffer' offers a slow, diner-style groove that feels like an undiscovered gem from an old jukebox. The track's laid-back vibe and unique rhythm make it a perfect backdrop for a relaxed setting, evoking a sense of yesteryear with every note. Side-2 brings us 'Duffer In F,' an alternate version that highlights a more prominent lead piano and a softer, muted drum fill. The bassline flows effortlessly, adding a hop and swing to the track that complements its vintage feel. This clever little record is a standout in its simplicity, showcasing MacDermot's ability to craft timeless grooves that resonate with listeners across the generations.

Mulatu (2:54)
Positive Force (3:06)
Review: Benedic Lamdin, known as Nostalgia 77, continues to impress with this dynamic 7' release featuring tracks from his Skeletons project. Mulatu, a standout from the 2010 LP Skeletons - Smile, pays homage to the legendary Mulatu Astatke. Lamdin effortlessly channels the spirit of African jazz, but with his own twist, creating a track that's even groovier, funkier, and heavier than its inspiration. It's a slow burner that thrills with its deep rhythms and intricate layers. On Side-2, Positive Force is a high-energy original that perfectly complements the first side. With its vibrant, uptempo vibe, it's an ideal choice for lively gatherings or backyard barbecues. Lamdin's ability to seamlessly blend different genres shines through on both tracks.

One Life To Live (4:04)
Kingdom Come (4:12)
Review: Ottawa's Afro-jazz-funk collective returns with a limited 7" showcasing two dynamic tracks that highlight their genre-blending prowess. Originally released in 2014 on Inner Fire, 'One Life To Live' kicks off Side-1 with an exhilarating fusion of funk, Latin and Afro rhythms. The track's lively horn arrangements and tight percussion create an infectious groove, balancing intricate musicianship with danceable energy. On Side-2, 'Kingdome Come' dives deeper into jazz territory, merging Afro-Cuban jazz with jazz-funk and Latin jazz elements. The result is a richly textured piece that moves fluidly between laid-back grooves and vibrant, rhythmic bursts. The percussion is sharp, and the brass shines with both restraint and exuberance, highlighting the band's ability to navigate complex arrangements while maintaining a relaxed, natural flow.
