Things You Say (3:20)
Review: Revivalist Latin funk-rock combo Brownout has an impressive track record. Previously, they've delivered killer albums and singles on Freestyle, Ubiquity and Kept Records, amongst others. This, though, is their first outing on Fat Beats. A-side "Evolver" is in some ways typical of their output. While fuelled by a saucy Latin-funk groove, the song also includes subtle nods towards psychedelic-era dream pop and Sly Stone style funk-rock. It's a rather tasty combination. B-side "Things You Say" is a slightly more straightforward affair, with the long-serving band peppering a heavy funk groove with riotous horn solos and righteous vocals.

Incarcerated Scarfaces
Review: El Michels Affair have made their name on their connection to Wu-Tang, kicking off with the essential Enter The 37th Chamber tribute back in 2009. Now Fat Beats are devoting a run of 7" releases to some of the strongest joints from that album, where iconic beats from the wider Wu-Tang universe get rendered as smoky, jazz-funk master pieces which sound so good rolling at 45 rpm on their own side of wax. On this particular entry, ODB's 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya' gets the treatment, with a children's choir-rap evocation of the lead hook that will turn heads on its own. On the flip it's Raekwon's 'Incarcerated Scarfaces', which sounds utterly essential played out by a live band.

Incarcerated Scarfaces (1:40)
Review: 10 years ago, El Michels Affair - a hip-hop loving funk combo spearheaded by Leon Michels - released "Enter The 37th Chamber", an instrumental tribute to the world of the Wu-Tang Clan. To celebrate the record's tenth birthday, they've decided to reissue two of that album's most potent cuts. On the A-side they re-imagine Ol' Dirty Bastard's 1995 anthem "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" as a fine fusion of rousing horns, jazz-flecked hip-hop beats and vocals provided by what sounds like a children's choir. Over on side B, Raekwon's "Incarcerated Scarfaces" gets the cover version treatment, with the band peppering their deep, jazz-funk influenced groove with sharp horns and evocative electric piano solos.

Glaciers Of Ice
Review: El Michels Affair are widely recognised in the hip-hop game now as a cinematic soul outfit worthy of collabs with the likes of Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, Black Thought and many more besides. It all kicked off when they toured with Raekwon and other Wu-Tang Clan members before recording their cool and deadly covers of the entire Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) in 2009, giving a smoky ensemble feel to the iconic, gritty beats. Two of the choicest cuts from that album are revived here on this Fat Beats 7", namely 'C.R.E.A.M' and 'Glaciers Of Ice', which sound as tough as the original versions while subtly sliding into the heavy funk sphere undetected.

Review: El Michels Affair's Enter the 37th Chamber is a curious exploration of Wu-Tang Clan's iconic beats through live hip-hop instrumentation. While the reinterpretations offer unexpected detours and minor blasphemies, they maintain a sense of familiarity, the dynamic arrangements and hazy, psychedelic atmosphere capturing the sorrow and menace of classic Wu-Tang tracks from a different angle. Standouts like 'C.R.E.A.M.' and 'Criminology' reimagine the original compositions with new layers of instrumentation, while tracks like 'Protect Ya Neck' evoke the soulful vibes of Booker T. & the MGs. Although some interpretations may stray from the original spirit, Enter the 37th Chamber ultimately succeeds as a series of familiar touchstones filtered through El Michels Affair's unique sonic lens. It's a compelling listen for rap-geek curios and fans of sample-based music alike.

Review: Will Sessions' The Elmatic Instrumentals is a slick fusion of funk and instrumental big beat, centring on a series of cover versions made for the rapper Elzhi's 'Elmatic' project in 2011 - an original re-rendition of rapper Nas' classic album 'Illmatic'. The precision LP follows Sessions' live funk and jazz performances and collaborations with artists like Black Milk, Danny Brown and Mayer Hawthorne, resulting in something of a creative peak. Each track was recreated from scratch with producer Sam Beaubien, capturing the essence of Illmatic's beats, but with a live band twist.
