Review: Canadian thrash/power metal behemoths 3 Inches Of Blood celebrate the 20 year anniversary of their seminal sophomore effort Advance & Vanquish with this long overdue deluxe reissue. Noted for being the final studio endeavour before the departure of original guitarists Sunny Dhak and Bobby Froese (who would reform their prior band Pride Tiger), as well as being the only release to feature bassist Brian Redman and drummer Matt Wood, this Roadrunner Records debut established the band as metallic soothsayers of a retro-fitted variety, line up issues be damned. Bursting with triumphant, virtuosic riffage and lyrics drawing from deep sea pirate adventures, paganism and Lord Of The Rings lore, this is peak early 21st century metallic nerdiness at its most potent and earnest.

Review: The Donnas made it big when they released their Turn 21 album in 2001, but they were kicking it way before that in the grand tradition of scuzzy garage rock bands. This collection pulls together their early singles recorded between 1995 and 1999, and it gives the perfect overview of the band's evolution from amateur buddies messing around to a tightly honed rock n' roll outfit. It's straight up three chord stuff, but full of all the attitude and honesty you expect from four girls fuelled by the inspiration of The Ramones and the American punk rock tradition.

Review: She is a famous voice of pop greatness around the world but there was also real tragedy and trouble throughout the life of Dusty Springfield. Her own personal demons blighted her life but maybe they are what helped infuse her songs with such potent emotion. The heyday years of the 60s and 70s gave rise to some of pop's best ever tunes and they are all captured here on this essential retrospective across two slabs of vinyl. Form the opener 'Son-Of-A Preacher Man' and on through 'In The Land Of Make Believe' and many others, this will swell your heart.

Review: Never Gonna Leave You is a rarity from the esteemed Brunswick label, credited to the sevensome US disco-soul-funk band active throughout the 1970s and beyond. With production by disco maestro Tony Valor, arrangements by Chi-Soul legend Eugene Record, and a new mix by the great Tom Moulton - not to mention an instrumental accompaniment from Valor's highly esteemed Tony Valor Sounds Orchestra - this 1976 classic is a cornerstone of stone-cold proto-disco, having already been reissued on CD in Japan multiple times since its creation. For its very first vinyl reissue, Never Gonna Leave You is lent the Real Gone treatment, delivering a newly r-rubbed version of the Chi-Lites' 'Stoned Out of My Mind' and delivering instant soul salvation.

Review: Here is a great example at the power of the reissue market. A series of live recordings were released on CD only starting in 1994 from the band's tape archivist Dick Latvala. When the vinyl boom kicked back into heavy gear with reissues in 2012, some of these Grateful Dead were brought to vinyl for the first time. Like many things with the band, their fans are devoted as much as any in music history. Then you have another variable that adds to the demand: A band known for their live performances that are individually different in many ways over the years. Thus, prices went out of control for these costing as much as a Ferrari monthly payment. Thankfully, these are starting to get a another pressing. Volume two is highly regarded because of the live jam version of Dark Star. An ideal track to show the amazing live ability of the band. This version comes in double vinyl form with a very nice gatefold.

Review: Formerly known as the Yum-Yums, the Philadelphia soul vocal quartet - made up of Jean Davis, Gwen Oliver, Nadine Felder and Cassandra Wooten - changed their name to Honey And The Bees to match the sweet, nigh-sickly femininity found in their sound. Replete with both covers and originals, 'Love Addict' is our favourite in the latter camp, channelling a boxy, bodyish sound and impassioned woohoos between the beats and brass.

Review: He has been in many cult films but Field of Dreams might be one of the best bits of work of Kevin Costner. The late 80s/early 90s classic also had a standout soundtrack that has never before been available on vinyl. The Real One label correct that wrong and press it to green and yellow 'cornfield' vinyl. It is a spine tingling score with lots of subtly artful piano pieces and rousing synth work that really gets you engaged whether or not you have seen the life-affirming movie itself. Do not sleep on this one.

Review: The Days of Our Nights was Luna's fifth studio album and it now gets an overdue repress courtesy of Real Gone Music. The Dean Wareham-fronted band came on strong with plenty of big and hooky indie pop songs here, despite the fact his label dropped them on the eve of the album's release in 1999. Because of that it has become hard to find over the years and is considered something of a lost gem in the band's back catalogue. There are highlights a plenty though such as 'Superfreaky Memories', 'U.S. Out of My Pants!' and a great cover of 'Sweet Child O' Mine' complete with a superb solo by guitarist Sean Eden.

Review: Medeski, Martin & Wood have been on a mission over the course of the last 30-odd years to explore the outer frontiers of jazz, all while drawing on hip-hop, avant-garde, world music, and electronic funk. Friday Afternoon In The Universe showcases their fearless improvised style and takes its name from 'Old Angel Midnight' by Jack Kerouac. It's a record that collides many different ideas and plenty of new ones emerge as a result. The mid-70s style of Miles Davis is a loose anchor point with standouts like 'Chubb Sub' well known to anyone who has seen Get Shorty.

Review: Real Gone Music are experts at reissuing ultra-rare r&b and disco, but Mary Mundy's 'Mother Nature' has proved a challenge even for them. Sometimes the album is available online, sometimes not, and if it is, it goes for hundreds. It's no wonder sourcing the licenses might have proved taxing. Ultimately, though, the perceived value of this record boils down to its limited initial pressing run, which was in spite of Mundy's undeniable vocal talents and affiliation to many other New York based disco pushers in the early 80s. A masterful ensemble project with production by Lew Hanson, Mundy's sound is undeniably hers, her voice gliding across a fiery-desirous shindig of whispers, rhythm guitar, synth, and future-facing add-prod.

Review: Industrial, metal and glam outfit Orgy was the first act signed by Korn's Jonathan Davis to his Elementree imprint, and the move paid off right away with their 1998 debut, which went Top 30 and scored a huge hit with it's cover of New Order's 'Blue Monday', and went on to dazzle with original numbers, most eminent among which is the song 'Stitches'. With crunching expositions, screeching, hyper-chorused vocal deliveries and multi-layered drums amounting to a huge, scorching sound, the band's debut record surely earned them the crown of their very own genre coinage, death pop. Somehow, though, this enduring late-90s favourite has eluded a vinyl release, until now! With the full cooperation of the band, Real Gone have really gone and gotten it remastered for vinyl (by Mike Milchner of Sonic Vision) and placed this platter inside a beautiful gatefold jacket.

Review: Originally released in 2003, Self-Destructive Pattern served as the third full-length from Los Angeles industrial-tinged nu-metal outfit Spineshank, and had the unenviable task of following up 2000's breakout sophomore effort The Height Of Callousness. Reuniting with legendary producer perfectionist GGGarth Richardson (Biffy Clyro, Rage Against The Machine) to help push their style into simultaneously more electronic aggression whilst elevating their melodic scope, the album offers a curious time in the nu-metal landscape where artists were searching for a sonic way out of their restrictive genre confines. Lead single 'Smothered' was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance 2004, yet ultimately lost to Metallica's St. Anger.
