Review: There have been a dizzying array of releases by Portland, Oregon's avant-metal masters The Body in the last five years alone, but this new opus might be the apotheosis of everything their murky and twisted art has been working towards across a plethora of splits, grim exorcisms and jaunts to the experimental dark-side. A nihilistic opus with as much artistic sleight-of-hand to offer as unflinching catharsis, 'No One Deserves Happiness' has been talked up by the band as 'the grossest pop record of all time', but the truth is more complicated and more fufilling than that - symphonic grandeur, electronic abrasion and beyond-heavy abjection are all here combined into one dizzying and cpherent whole, marking this always square-peg outfits as frontiersmen of extremity unlikely to be rivalled in 2016.

Review: Emptyset have been innovating in the world of electronic music for over a decade now. James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas' music is challenging yet poignant, artful yet immersive and fuses sound design with raw audio synthesis. "Blossoms", the new record for Thrill Jockey was developed by a process of "seeding a software model with a sonic knowledge base of material to learn and predict from". That base material was then embellished with 10 hours of improvised recordings using sources such as wood, drum skins and metal, giving rise to this bleakly beguiling album of drone, industrial and audio experimentation.

Experimental/Electronic
Review: Grand would be one way to describe this collaborative testament to lucid listening. Bass clarinetist and synth duo Jonathan Sielaff and Matt Carlson have long-since busied themselves trying not just to marry, but cross-pollinate and splice together their respective instruments via otherworldly effects. If there's a guitarist on the planet better suited to add another level of intoxicating sound, perfectly interwoven to create a new, three-part whole, it's probably Chuck Johnson. As a trio, their combined efforts are as serene as they are intriguing, lulling us into relaxing and reflective thought patterns while we attempt to locate the spaces in between each of the players' roles. This is very much a contemporary classical album of sizeable sonics, even if the approach is more in line with minimalist compositions, climaxes conjuring the high peaks, its troughs invoking endless expanses.

Review: The psychedelic odd couple of Alexander Tucker and Daniel O'Sullivan have honed their style to such a degree that their partnership in Grumbling Fur now comes across as no less than a national treasure, and 'Furfour' may just be the strongest record they've thus far committed to posterity - their dizzying blend of classically eccentric British psychedelia, crystalline synth pop and exquisite vocal harmonies has never sounded richer, more resonant or more gloriously psychotropic, with its musical experimentation more than matched my its emotional resonance. These caned crusaders are here to be cherished.

Review: If you're yet to come across Helen Money then now is probably a very good time to rectify that. A background in classical music - and how seriously aficionados of the canon take her - suggests unarguable talent, and her work is proof. Reverence in alternative circles shows how she has never stuck to the path well-trodden, and instead forges ahead on her own terms in pretty much every outing. This is no exception. A maestro on the cello, which leads the charge on this mystifying, brooding and exceptionally cinematic effort, it's incredible just how versatile she makes the instrument sound when you consider your stereotypical thoughts on how it is usually played. Plucked, bowed, reverberated, whatever the approach it offers new depths to the ear, from the chilling 'Coil', which utilises pianos to add a feeling if impending something, to 'Midnight''s melancholia, this is exquisite stuff.

Review: "Sonic Citadel" marks Brians Gibson and Chippendale's seventh studio album and it is one that finds them revealing a little more of themselves than before. "Blow To The Head" is an intense opener with caustic texture, dense layers and scuzzy noise that soundtracks a manic episode, while elsewhere there are much more angular and punk influenced rhythm tracks with deathly vocals mired in gauzy riffs engulfed in dirt, grit and sandpaper sonics. Standout track "Halloween 3" is a suitably horror fuelled track of high energy, lo fi fuzz that will keep any demons away.

Review: Apparently critics have been coining the phrase OOIOO-ish to describe the sound of this Japanese experimental rock band meet avant-garde jazz or polyrhythmic progressive sound walls. Those looking for anything but brevity will be in their element, these are epics in the truest sense of the word. And not just in running time. The 11-minute "Walk for "345" Minutes, While Saying "Ah Yeah!" with a "Mountain Book" In One Hand, Until A Shower Of Light Pours Down" might be the longest song name we've ever encountered. It's slow build from staccato warm up into layer upon layer of cosmic greatness pretty much summarising this entire record. Put it this way, you'll not be bored for the duration with this mystic meld of Far Eastern nuances and daring rock.

Review: Those who've been following the evolution of the Thrill Jockey label should already be familiar with Oval, an artist whose glitchy, mind-altering fusions of leftfield electronica, IDM and experimental rock have featured on the admirable imprint since 1998. "Scis" is the trio-turned-solo act's first album for almost six years. Quirky and off-kilter throughout, it expertly mixes and mangles Boards Of Canada style melodies, squally (and occasionally riotous) modified guitar sounds, wildly cut-up loops, eccentric aural textures, beats that refuse to sit still and fuzzy electronic motifs that sound like an experimental take on the micro-house sound of the mid 2000s. It's deliciously hard to pin down, but also hugely immersive and beguiling.

Review: Talk about self-awareness. Rose City Band profess to play 'some laid-back strums', and it's pretty much impossible to come up with a more accurate description for the Portland, Oregon troupe. Quite the fitting sound considering the city's reputation for relaxed and open-minded attitudes, you'll struggle to hear much that jangles and rolls out blues-psyche-rock with this much seemingly effortless ease. Opening on 'Only Lonely' (not to be confused with Roy Orbison's similarly-named classic, or indeed the eponymous John Candy movie), there's a country air to the six strings and snare-topped drums. Things become more expansive on fare like Dire Straits-leaning 'Wee Hours', riffs echoing well beyond the track's rhythmic chug, with that uptempo pace maintained throughout most of a record we'd file under timeless, sun-kissed and earthy rock 'n' roll.

Review: Fans of The Grateful Dead listen up: you should have been taking note of Rose City Band before now. Don't worry, though, this self-titled from a blues-tipped troupe - who clearly understand the joys of psychedelia - is the outfit's debut. As such while you've missed a bit, there's hopefully far more to come. When it comes to outfits like Rose City Band it's easy to simply reel off a list of people the pack have elements of, partly because accurate definitions don't come easy when there are shades of garage rock, tripped out roll, and even some hallucinogenic take on country and western swoon at play. And that's just on the appropriately titled "Wandering Feeling". You could well nod to Moon Duo, Little Feat and the aforementioned Dead, alongside Cosmic Americana, of course. References aside, RCB rank among the finest making this fare, so prepare to get lost in a kaleidoscopic road trip.
