Spirit In My Hair
Review: The highly obscure debut record by Naoki Zushi, a founding member of Japanoise band Hijokaidan, comes reissued via Sad Disco. An early Org Records outing, Paradise came two years into the ogreish 80s label's quality-controlled run of LPs between dream pop, psychedelic rock and noise. Zushi resisted an easy fit into any one of these categories, and the likes of 'Spirit In My Hair' tenderise through gusts of rhythmic noisy pedal fuzz, not to mention guitar chord arpeggiations played so tightly they almost sound sequenced. Quietly released while Hijokaidan were well into their career and exploring one of their harshest phases, this lovely album by the guitarist is a comparative haven, predicting the silky noise-gaze styles later taken up by Boris or Yellow Swans.

Review: South Korean survival drama Squid Game took the post-lockdown viewing world by storm. Depicting 456 financially desperate contestants accepting a mysterious invitation to compete in a series of deadly children's games for a massive cash prize, the series, penned by Hwang Dong-hyuk, seemed to successfully mirror a dour reality that was true even before and despite our pre-COVID collective scotoma: no capitalist subject has the luxury of escaping debt cyclicality. Jung Jaeil's highly idiosyncratic soundtrack is therefore complementarily ridiculous, juxtaposing elephantine trombones and toy flutes with dramatic electronic orchestral buildups, prompting audiences the world over to consider the real stakes behind the otherwise farcical situations depicted in-universe.

Review: With the inductive Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame branding iron still hot, we're reminded of the pivotal pact described in The White Stripes' fifth album Get Behind Me Satan . Originally dropping in 2005, it was recorded in the stairwell of Jack White's Detroit home, and marked a sharp shift from their raw guitar-driven roots toward an increasingly eclectic sound. Piano, marimba, timpani and mandolin weave through 'Blue Orchid', 'My Doorbell' and 'The Denial Twist,' helping it snag the Grammy for Best Alternative Album and sell close to a million copies stateside. Critics at the time noted its bold departure into "Fifties exotica", a brave move that could've either made or broke chart promises. This record comes on striking red smoke and clear red/black discs, following the expanded Get Behind Me Satan XX edition with demos and alternate takes.

Review: Genesis' double concept album from 1974 is a seraphic work, telling the surreal, mythic story of Rael, a Puerto Rican youth navigating a dreamlike New York City filled with bizarre characters and symbolism. Also Peter Gabriel's last album with Genesis, it marks the moment that the 'Solsbury Hill' singer left to pursue a solo career, thus curtailing the era of "progressive Genesis". Hailed as one of the most influential prog rock albums of all time, it exalts Genesis as early users of ambient, synth-driven moodscapes, which serve as transcendent backdrops for Rael's "ashy to classy" bildungsroman. As a Puerto Rican street kid embarks on an odyssey of personage, the album reaches a staunch climax in an archetypal castration scene. Also doubling as a live show in which Peter Gabriel donned grotesque costumes and leathery hides to represent Rael - not quite Broadway, but close - this new set comes complete with a 1975 tour programme reproduction, replica ticket, poster and a 60-page coffee table style book featuring rare images and new liner notes by Alexis Petridis.

Review: Ian Anderson reflects on Still Living In The Past as more than just a catch-up compilation. To him, it's a sketchbook of he and his fellow Lancs Jethro Tull's stylistic wanderings before their fifth studio LP Thick As A Brick changed everything. This expanded reissue of the 1972 assemblage brings primarily UK A and B-sides, as well as EP cuts like 'Life Is A Long Song' and outliers recorded between the first three LPs, material once intended to plug gaps for overseas fans. Led by acoustic motifs and mandolin and flute saliences, the band's lead brain Anderson estimates the set as "quirky", and a necessary milestone to harken his earliest developments as a songwriter. Steven Wilson returns to remix the studio material and full 1970 Carnegie Hall show; this LP version condenses the essentials.

Still Living In The Past (Blu-ray)
Review: Blackpool rock progressors Jethro Tull revisit their formative years with Still Living In The Past, a lavish 5CD and Blu-ray reissue of the main compilation, first out in 1972. Originally pulling on UK-only singles, EP tracks and early oddities recorded between 1968 and 1971, the collection now returns in expanded form, with new stereo and surround mixes by Steven Wilson, previously unheard edits and demos, and a full 1970 Carnegie Hall set spread across two discs. It's a deep dive into Ian Anderson's baroque-folk experiments and mandolin-heavy diversions before Thick As A Brick rewired the band entirely.

Review: Yoshiko Sai, one of Japan's most revered singers from the 1970s, gears up to release her entire discography on limited-edition coloured vinyl, settling the score of fan demand. After a 30-year hiatus following her 1978 album Cho no Sumu Heya, Sai returned to releasing with the mesmeric world contained on Taklamakan (2008), which was made with the aid of longtime collaborators Seiichi Yamamoto and Takeharu Hayakawa. With Sai's own illustrations on the cover, we're met with a fine, satinet art pop and vocal jazz comeback here, with the colour and title representing the vast Taklamakan desert in China's Xinjiang region.

Review: Finally, Yoshiko Sai's celebrated career hears and sees a comprehensive LP repress campaign, with each star discus in her catalogue now lent a limited edition coloured vinyl edition. A key figure in Japan's folk and psychedelic scenes, Sai's mixture of cantastoria (story-singing) and ethereal instrumentation have infatuated listeners for decades. Mikkou explores themes of stowaways and distant travels, immersing the listener in an exotic, Silk Road-inspired fantasy; we tread an exotic trade route, changing hands through sleepless, arid nights of longing vocals and darkened funk (just take in those drum unisons on 'Haru', setting a precedent for impeccable productions throughout).

Review: A high-gloss Abbey Road remaster and LITA reissue brings Masayoshi Takanaka's kaleidoscopic The Rainbow Goblins the treatment it deserves. Originally released in 1981 as his seventh studio album, it's one of the Toyko jazz fuser's most eccentric works, riffing on Ul De Rico's surrealist children's book of the same name (and with an allusive accompanying illustration). The result is a prog-fusion fantasia thick with swirling guitar lines and orchestral flourishes, reissued here on 180g clear purple vinyl to mirror the dreamlike palette of the sleeve. This edition forms part of a trio of remastered classics, alongside T-Wave and Alone, also cut at Abbey Road by Alex Wharton.

Review: Continuing the journey on from her first two albums, Mangekyo and Mikko, Yoshiko Sai deepened the surreal, spiritual exploration first introduced in her earlier work on this, her third LP, when it arrived in 1977. Once again collaborating with arranger Yuji Ohno, she crafts an eerie, introspective atmosphere that blends poetic imagery with hauntingly beautiful music. At just 24, the Japanese artist was already an accomplished poet, painter, and singer, with this release showcasing her ability to conjure vivid, dream-like landscapes. Tracks like 'Gitano' and 'Alhambra No Aoi Bin' feature delicate arrangements that swirl around Sai's ethereal vocals, evoking a world of mystery and intrigue. The music moves through a range of emotions, from the quiet contemplation in 'Umi No Chinmoku' to the emotional depth of 'Taiji No Yume,' reflecting her spiritual journey. This reissue is the perfect showcase for her unique blend of folk, art and poetry, offering an experience that's both introspective and sonically rich.

Review: Long coveted by collectors and now available internationally for the first time, Yoshiko Sai's 1975 album Mangekyou finds the Japanese singer-songwriter at the height of her powers. Produced by the legendary Yuji Ohno, known for his work across jazz and film scores, the album weaves a dense tapestry of lush arrangements and vibrant textures. Ohno's instrumental backdropsifrom funky jazz infusions to breezy, cinematic soundscapesiallow Sai's crystal-clear voice to take centre stage, moving seamlessly between ethereal folk, dramatic chanson, and soft psych. Tracks like 'Yoru No Sei' and 'Oumagatoki' embody a surreal, haunting quality, as Sai's voice drifts through verses like a ghostly narrator, while the backing shifts between lighthearted jazz and wistful strings. The album's variety ensures that every track offers something new, whether it's the melancholy depth of 'Akai Hana' or the playfully strange 'Eidore Shibai'. Mangekyou feels simultaneously timeless and ahead of its time, a work that exists between genres, places, and moods. The arrangements feel light on their feet but heavy with emotion. Long buried in obscurity, this reissue frames Sai's vision not as esoterica, but as quietly revelatory.

Now, again, they're all available on limited edition coloured vinyl. And one standout among them is her 1978 album Chou No Sumu Heya, which diffuses a gourmand jazz, hearing her accompanied by the talented Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio. The album is a potent sonic thurible, incensing us to join Yoshiko in her alternate sonic world. On a note of radical negativity, after the album's creation, Sai remarked, "I can no longer write songs that I like," suggesting the worthwhile depletion of a vital inner resource.

Below The Funk (Pass The J)
Review: A funk masterpiece that redefined r&b and pop, this album blended gritty street themes with polished, danceable grooves and left a big mark on music when it dropped in 1981. James was already well known, but this LP catapulted him to superstardom, solidifying his signature "punk-funk" style and leaving an indelible mark on pop music. Kicking off with the incendiary 'Give It to Me Baby', James delivers an irresistible mix of slap bass, soaring horns and electrifying energy. The track became a club staple, setting the stage for the album's raw yet refined sound. The iconic 'Super Freak' is a funky, synth-driven anthem that remains one of the most recognisable basslines in music history, later sampled by MC Hammer for 'U Can't Touch This'. Beyond the hits, Street Songs is full of depth. 'Ghetto Life' paints a vivid picture of James' upbringing with a groove-heavy backdrop, while 'Fire and Desire', a stunning duet with Teena Marie, slows things down with its emotional intensity and soulful vocal interplay. 'Call Me Up' and 'Below the Funk (Pass the J)' further feature James' ability to fuse funk with rock and r&b seamlessly. The album's influence on pop music is immeasurable. It bridged funk and mainstream pop, inspiring artists from Prince to Bruno Mars. Its unapologetic energy and genre-blurring sound helped shape the future of r&b, hip-hop and dance music, proving that funk could be both raw and radio-friendly. Over four decades later, Street Songs still stands as a defining statement of funk's evolution into the pop landscape.

Review: Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is Alanis Morissette's ambitious follow-up to 1995's mega-hit Jagged Little Pill. Released November 3, 1998, the album defied expectations and avoided the easy path of imitation and in instead, Morissette dove deeper into introspection, spiritual growth and lyrical vulnerability. With eclectic production blending rock, Eastern influences and hip-hop grooves, the album reflects the sound of a maturing artist embracing complexity. Songs like 'Front Row' and 'Thank U' reflect her evolving voice which is less angry, more self-aware yet still fearless. This bold, personal work solidified Morissette's artistic identity beyond her already proven commercial success.

Review: Stone Temple Pilots' 1996 pivot from grunge scaffolding to something stranger and shinier comes remastered on Mobile Fidelity's hybrid SACD; a hi-res edition cut from the original tapes. Recorded in a sprawling Californian ranch-turned-studio, the band ditched the confines of alt-rock purity for glam-flecked guitar pop, stoned psychedelia, garage crunch and warped lounge. It confused critics at the time, but Tiny Music... Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop has grown into its reputation, helped along by a vocal performance from Scott Weiland that drifts between smeared and swaggering, ragged and weirdly precise. Brendan O'Brien's production brims with odd textures and giddy detours, as 'Big Bang Baby' borrows from 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', while 'Lady Picture Show' veers into brittle melancholy. A record that made fun of the rules while rewriting them.

The Jon Pertwee Collection abridges two vinyl readings - Doctor Who And The Curse Of Peladon and Doctor Who And The Planet Of The Daleks - adapted respectively by Brian Hayles and Terrance Dicks from their early 70s TV scripts. Pertwee lends his classic voice to both, accompanied by BBC Radiophonic Workshop's unmistakable theme. Alongside the audiobooks are a string of rarities including a 1972 novelty single, radio interviews, sketches, and later-era tributes, all reflecting the breadth of Pertwee's post-Who cultural footprint.

Review: Arthur Fiedler's long tenure with the Boston Pops produced a vast archive of recordings, many leaning into fan-serving territory, but this collection proves the orchestra's range extended far beyond light classical fare. Here, Prokofiev's 'Three Oranges Suite' gets a full wax treatment, moving well beyond its often-isolated 'March' into the suite's other vivid vignettes. The rearrangement of 'Les Sylphides' tiptoes between charm and kitsch, while Liszt's symphonic poems receive unexpectedly muscular renderings. 'Mazeppa' bursts with theatric flair, while 'Les Preludes' is approached with drive and precision, opposing overcooked symbolism. Fiedler's flair for drama never came at the expense of control, and this set captures a conductor who bridged populism and classical heft with confidence.

Review: Roberta Flack's version of 'Killing Me Softly With His Song' stands as a defining moment in soul and jazz, where vulnerability and poise collide. The track's power lies in its simplicityiFlack's warm, restrained delivery brings a sense of intimacy to every note, drawing the listener in with a kind of quiet intensity. Review: Genesis's 1981 album captures a pivotal moment in the band's evolution, where their progressive roots blend seamlessly with a sleek, radio-friendly sound that defined their 1980s identity. This album showcases the trio's ability to experiment while crafting accessible and compelling tracks. From the dynamic interplay of sharp guitar riffs and smooth organ tones on the title track to the infectious horn-driven groove of 'No Reply at All', Genesis proves their mastery of melody and rhythm. Tony Banks' 'Me and Sarah Jane' evokes the band's earlier prog days with its intricate layers, while 'Keep It Dark' and 'Dodo/Lurker' explore mechanical rhythms and multi-part suites. Phil Collins' heartfelt 'Man on the Corner' pairs poignant lyrics with electronic percussion and Mike Rutherford's 'Like It or Not' transitions beautifully from ballad to bold declaration. Closing with 'Another Record', the album leaves listeners with a punchy, rhythmic finale. Reissued on 180-gram vinyl with gatefold packaging, this edition enhances the listening experience, presenting the music with warmth and clarity. A significant chapter in Genesis's storied career, this album remains a testament to their innovation and adaptability.

Review: Joe Pass had only just begun gaining wider recognition when he stepped into the studio in 1975 with Ray Brown and Bobby Durham to pay tribute to Duke Ellington, who had died just weeks earlier. The result was Portraits Of Duke Ellington, a warm, loose, and unflashy session that swings without fuss through eight Ellington standards plus Juan Tizol's 'Caravan'. Tracks like 'In A Mellow Tone', 'Don't Get Around Much Anymore' and 'I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)' draw out Pass's effortless touch and improvisational fluency, with the trio locked in throughout. This new Analogue Productions cut comes from the original master tapes by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab.

Throw Down The Sword
Review: British hard rock team Wishbone Ash's third studio release is reissued here in its original seven-track form. First released in 1972 and recorded at De Lane Lea in the heart of Soho, it captures the group's defining sound i a balance of dual-lead guitar arrangements, modal harmony, and restrained vocals, delivered with clarity and compositional control. 'Time Was' opens the record with a long acoustic section before shifting into full-band mode, setting the tone for the rest of the side. 'Sometime World' and 'Blowin' Free' follow similar patterns, trading complexity for structure and melodic interplay. On the second side, 'The King Will Come' and 'Warrior' stretch out more fully into folk-rock and proto-metal territory, while 'Leaf and Stream' offers a short, pastoral interlude. 'Throw Down the Sword' closes the set with an extended outro, bringing the recurring themes of conflict and release into focus. The production by Derek Lawrence, with Martin Birch on engineering, remains spacious and unembellished. The influence of these arrangements on later bands is well documented, but this edition offers a chance to revisit the original on its own terms i sharp, economical and surprisingly restrained.

Review: In 1960, the music of Finnish Romantic music composer Jean Sibelius heard a re-rendering by The London Symphony Orchestra, this time led by prominent conductor Alexander Gibson. Outside of Sibelius' core seven symphonies, two live-performed studies of Sibelius' best known secondary works are heard here: his Fifth Symphony and the Karelia Suite. Alongside Thomas Beecham, Gibson was one of two of Britain's two most esteemed conductors, and this newly reissued set of six is true example of his idiosyncratic and voluptuous bandleading, which leads the Symphony down an entirely new path.

You Got It In Your Soulness
The Generation Gap
Review: One of soul jazz's most electrifying live recordings and a spontaneous triumph born from an unrehearsed, last-minute collaboration at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival. Pianist and vocalist Les McCann, alongside tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Baileyiwho had never played together beforeideliver an exuberant, groove-heavy set that captures the raw energy of the moment. Despite the lack of preparation, the chemistry between the musicians is undeniable and the resulting performance remains one of the most talked-about live jazz recordings. The set opens with 'Compared to What', McCann's politically charged anthem railing against Nixon and the Vietnam War, propelled by a relentless groove and impassioned vocals. The band locks into a deep pocket, with Harris and Bailey trading fiery, blues-inflected solos. 'Cold Duck Time' follows with an irresistible bounce, its bluesy vamp providing the perfect backdrop for extended improvisation. The mood shifts with 'Kathleen's Theme', where Harris takes center stage, exploring the melody with fluid grace before 'You Got It in Your Soulness' brings the session back to its gospel-infused roots, McCann's percussive piano stabs and Donald Dean's driving beat igniting the crowd. Decades later, Swiss Movement still exudes an infectious, unfiltered joyiproof that great jazz can thrive in the most unplanned circumstances. It's a high-spirited, deeply soulful document of musicians seizing the moment with dazzling results.

Review: Zoot Sims and Joe Pass recorded together only once, but the chemistry of this 1982 duo session between the two American sax titans is instant; exothermic. Pass, always light on his feet, met his perfect foil in Sims, who by this point had found an understated but articulate sound. Recorded late in both men's careers, the session pairs Pass's harmonic clarity with Sims's warm tone and melodic instinct, especially on the ballad 'Remember', where his phrasing keeps the tension between wistful and conversational. Elsewhere, faster tunes roll out with unforced swing and shared purpose. Remastered from the original analogue tapes by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, this edition comes on an 180-gramme vinyl record.

Review: Yes's 1972 masterpiece remains a standout in progressive rock and this new remaster elevates it to even greater heights. With Steven Wilson's meticulous work, the album shines in all its sonic glory, bringing out the intricate details of the band's performances. The original tracklisting, which includes the iconic 'Close to the Edge,' 'And You and I,' and 'Siberian Khatru,' is a showcase of brilliant musicianship and songwriting. Each member plays a crucial role, with Steve Howe's guitar work and Chris Squire's bass standing out, while Rick Wakeman's organ solos add grandeur. This album refines an already near-perfect classic.

Review: Ray Charles stands at the crossroads of 20th-century music i born in Georgia and raised in Florida, he emerged from the Jim Crow South not just as a titan of rhythm and blues but as a shape-shifting interpreter who redefined genre boundaries by sheer force of personality. On this early landmark, his voice is the instrument i bold, broken and utterly assured. The first half pairs him with a brass-soaked big band stacked with Basie and Ellington sidemen; 'Let the Good Times Roll' and 'It Had to Be You' swing with a mischievous, winking power, while 'Two Years of Torture' is pure stage-lit agony, with Charles unflinching in the spotlight. The second half turns orchestral, lush but never polite i 'You Won't Let Me Go' and 'Come Rain or Come Shine' turn show tunes into prayer, soul bleeding through every note. Charles strips these standards of their Broadway polish and threads them through lived-in phrasing, delivered from the gut. It's a feat that would shape his catalogue for decades, but rarely with this much risk or reward.

Notably, 'For What It's Worth'', a track aimed at the counterculture of the time, became a defining anthem of the era. Other tracks like 'Go and Say Goodbye', 'Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing' and 'Hot Dusty Roads' highlight the band's ability to craft memorable, introspective songs. Now reissued on gatefold 180-gram audiophile vinyl, this version offers an opportunity to experience this classic with enhanced sound quality. A crucial part of rock history. Review: Keeping to a sadomasochistic touring schedule - juggling the dates of which with album releases between 1974 and 1977 - Bad Company were in sore need of a break following the completion of their fourth LP, Burnin' Sky. After two years, they made their return on March 17, 1979, with their fifth studio album Desolation Angels, named after the Jack Kerouac beatnik classic of the same name. A 10-track collection of blues-influenced rock was met with strong chart performance, proving that even amid the rise of punk and new wave, Bad Company's signature sound still had significant appeal. The album's standout track, 'Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy', became a gold-selling single, while tracks like 'Gone, Gone, Gone', 'Lonely for Your Love' and 'She Brings Me Love' emboldened the vocal prowess of lead larynx Paul Rodgers. The album sports a relatively polished production sheen compared to Burnin' Sky, suggesting renewal after disenchantment.

Review: LA-formed rockers Buffalo Springfield's 1967 second album hears a reissue through Analogue Productions US. In the words of AllMusic, this record saw a decentralising of Springfield's band, with a tacit sprawling out of instrumental and production duties by the members informing on this blues folk-tinged, early psychedelic rock magnum. The mood is quotidian but fantastical at the same time: "Every day's a killing time, sun comin' up outside, no matter what this time, Saturday's child stays home..." goes the idling line on 'Everydays', just before a searing distorto-guitar note interrupts and cuts across an otherwise picturesque scene. Smooth to the point of cosmic, the record also benefits from orchestral Americana romances, which hardly signify the to come later: there's no way the idyllic 'Expecting To Fly' could predict the endless twangoffs of 'Hung Upside' for a second.

Review: John Coltrane's exploration of modal jazz shines through in this energetic and thought-provoking performance. Opening with 'Naima,' the track takes an introspective yet powerful approach, allowing us to see Coltrane's unique ability to blend intricate melodic lines with a deep sense of emotional expression. The rhythm section, led by Elvin Jones on drums, locks in with Coltrane's saxophone, creating a sense of tension and release throughout the album. Tracks like 'Cousin Mary' introduce a playful, upbeat energy, offering a contrast to the more meditative moments. This release is a testament to Coltrane's ability to push the boundaries of jazz while maintaining an innate emotional depth.

Review: The fourth studio release from US country rock giants Crosby, Stills & Nash, released in 1982, marked a period of reflection and renewal for the American trio, shaped by their diverse backgrounds: David Crosby's West Coast roots, Stephen Stills' Texan upbringing and Graham Nash's British perspective. Their signature harmonies and seasoned craftsmanship come through with the project largely built from prior recordings between Stills and Nash in 1980 and 1981. What began as a duo effort was ultimately enhanced by Crosby's return that gave the tracks a fresh dynamic. The songs tap into familiar folk rock territory, but the album's highlights, like 'Wasted on the Way' (Nash reflecting on the consequences of personal squabbles) and 'Southern Cross' (Stills' reinterpretation of a Curtis brothers' track), explore the bittersweet nature of their turbulent past. Crosby's own contributionsiespecially 'Delta' and 'Might As Well Have a Good Time'iadd an intimate touch, weaving his signature harmonies with Stills and Nash's. With collaborators like Mike Finnigan and Art Garfunkel, the record embodies a sense of rebirth, while also introducing the band to the music video era with the MTV-friendly 'Southern Cross'. As they reckon with their past, the release captures their journey towards renewal, reaffirming their legacy while embracing change.

Review: In late 19th to early 20th Century Paris, operettas were the order of the day. Cologne-born composer-cellist Jacques Offenbach and Boston conductor Arthur Fielder were chief conceivers of this terse micro-musical form, defined in the loosest sense as a "light opera". Like novellas, operettas are shorter, lighter-hearted commedia, featuring the occasional satirical jibe. Offenbach came first; he and Fielder began their diachronic dialogue in earnest in 1954, when the latter's 1954 rendition of Gaîte Parisienne - a 1938 ballet featuring many an Offenbach operetta - became a beloved reinterpretation. This loyal commemoration by the Boston Pops Orchestra at the Boston Symphony Hall eulogises Offenbach's superb orchestrations once more, in what has been described as one of the best RCA recordings of all time.

Review: Usually when flames die, they're extinguished, but Atlanta rapper Playboi Carti isn't afraid of embodying contradiction by any stretch: not least in the titular affirmative Die Lit. Ditching trad rollout playbooks with his debut album, dropping it with minimal fanfare and a one-track teaser - the SoundCloud-only 'Love Hurts' with Travis Scott - what followed were 19 bursts of lo-fi, blown-out trap that doubled down on the glitchy, hyperminimal aesthetic he'd hinted at on his 2017 mixtape. Carti's warbly "baby voice" approach sprawls across warped proto-plugg beats from Pi'erre Bourne, Don Cannon, Maaly Raw and others, twisting cloud rap into a punk-streaked, barely-there blur. Guests like Skepta, Lil Uzi Vert, Nicki Minaj, Chief Keef, Gunna and Young Thug drift in and out like ghost signals. Critics were split, but Die Lit didn't need consensus, crashing into the Billboard 200 at number three and eventually going gold, reshaping trap's boundaries with an oddly addictive shrug.

Review: Australian rapper The Kid Laroi rose to fame in the late 2010s and early 20s after garnering significant attention on SoundCloud, mostly for a keystone collaboration with the late Juice WRLD. Capturing the spirit of the time through relevant emo revivals filtered through hip-hop and pop production of the brittlest degree, Laroi would later rub shoulders with Justin Bieber and Marshmello, furthering an industrially complex rapprochement with the culturally famished generation that is Gen Z. The First Time was the debut record that followed, mounting such quick movements onto a single disc: heartbreak, mental health, identity retention and the inebriate deliriums of youth were all explored. Now the artist follows up with an expanded edition and Deluxe Version, which comes newly backed by the all-capsing 'YOU NEVER FORGET YOUR FIRST TIME', hearing singer Elisha Herbert sing ruefully of her eagerest yet most disappointing young liaison.

Review: Some 30 years in, the back catalogue of Tokyo's Thee Michelle Gun Elephant is hearing a high-spec revival. Along Rodeo Tandem Beat Specter (2001), Casanova (2000) is one of two to be disembalmed, laid to waxen unrest on remastered double vinyl this summer. Both originally landed through Nippon's Triad imprint during the group's late period, the former record, heard here, slices the ears with its garage door shutterings and diffuse, feedback-soaked blues: 'Cobra' and 'Angie Motel' simmer with an especial menace and sleaze.

Review: To mark 30 years since their debut, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant reissue their sixth album Rodeo Tandem Beat Specter on vinyl as part of the ongoing Thee 30th anniversary project. In a then rather sonically polished era, this fuzz-scuzzed psych-noise band would eventually be thanked for their breath-of-air-freshening sound, contrasting boldly to the 90s scene's otherwise jovial, polished pop and preppy kei aesthetics. Marking the millennium, the album saw the band at full pelt, fusing garage rock muscle with twisted surf riffs and snarling energy. It now returns with renewed clarity and heft, offering a raw snapshot of one of Japan's most ferocious rock acts before their split in 2003.

Review: The latest George Harrison reissuing flurry from BMG flutters forth again, this time focusing on Let It Roll, a brief collection recorded by the "shy Beatle" well into his solo career. Released the day Harrison received his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, the compilation pulls from his Apple and Dark Horse years but omits six of his studio albums entirely. Over chart majors like 'My Sweet Lord', 'Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)', and 'Got My Mind Set On You', alongside three live recordings from the landmark Concert for Bangladesh, this one began as a full-career summary but nonetheless - necessarily - lacked material from Wonderwall Music, Thirty Three & 1/3, and the Traveling Wilburys, resolutely raising eyebrows among fans.

Review: New Zealand singer/songwriter Lorde's fourth studio album arrives on June 27: her quickest return yet between full-lengths. Where her last recharge Solar Power leant into yellow, photovoltaic minimalism, Virgin segues into swarthier, casual style, with Lorde co-producing these quite candid songs mainly alongside longtime pop producer and remixer Jim-E Stack. Tracks like 'What Was That' and 'Man Of The Year' mark a left turn into dark-night-of-the-soul recovery territory. Early performances at summer festivals hinted at this pivot, as she rebuilt older songs with synth textures and debuted new material. The artwork, a blue X-ray of a pelvis and IUD by Heji Shin, frames well the album's themes of vulnerability, clarity, retrospection and physicality.

Review: Tacoma garage rock legends The Sonics are revisited here across seven 7" singles, covering their key material from 1964 to 1966. The set includes foundational tracks from the Etiquette years - 'The Witch', 'Psycho', and 'Strychnine' - alongside Jerden-era cuts like 'Head On Backwards' and 'Like No Other Man', all remastered and sequenced with clarity. It's the first time material from both periods has been presented together on vinyl. 'Keep A Knockin' and 'Louie Louie' sit comfortably beside the band's originals, which are leaner, noisier, and often more aggressive. 'Boss Hoss', 'Cinderella', and 'Shot Down' showcase the group's punchy rhythm section and blown-out recording style, while 'Have Love Will Travel' and 'High Time' ride the line between r&b cover and full distortion assault. 'Maintaining My Cool', long circulating in other formats, makes its vinyl debut here in its rare Audio Recording version. The pressing includes a booklet with photography by Jini Dellaccio, but the real appeal is in the sequencing - no filler, no novelty, just the most direct catalogue survey of a band that never needed polishing.

Song Of The Underground Railroad
Review: Now receiving a reissue with a focused selection of four key tracks, Africa/Brass remains one of the most distinctive entries in John Coltrane's catalogue. Originally released in 1961, the album marked his debut for Impulse! Records and a bold detour into large ensemble territory. On the surface, it does not radically redefine jazz, but its genius lies in how it reimagines familiar structures with fresh perspective. The title track, taking up an entire side, is a masterclass in minimalism and expression. Anchored by a single chord and two double bassesione bowed, one pluckediit unfolds with dynamic shifts in tone and texture, moving from spiritual calm to orchestral thunder. Despite its scale, the arrangement breathes, allowing space for Coltrane and his group to explore vast emotional terrain. 'Greensleeves' and 'Blues Minor' are sturdy companion pieces. The former is a reinterpretation of the folk classic, transformed through Coltrane's rich phrasing and Elvin Jones' explosive drumming. 'Blues Minor' swings harder, spotlighting the full ensemble with more open solo sections. Arranged by Eric Dolphy, the album trades some spontaneity for depth and cohesion. It remains grounded and earthy, another ace in Coltrane's heayweight pack.
