Review: A solid four track EP on Step Ball Chain records blending minimal and tech house with a splash of techno. offering a diverse range of sounds for late-night dancefloors. Side-1 starts with 'Do U Want Me', a playful peak-time house track filled with nostalgic old-school samples and a serious grooveiperfect for keeping the energy up during those late-night sets. It's followed by 'Make Me', which shifts gears into a dubby mix of dubstep and liquid drum 'n' bass, offering a bass-heavy, laid-back vibe. On Side-2, 'Bassy Bits' drives things forward with its fast-paced tech house beats and dirty bassline, making it a DJ-friendly gem designed to shake the dancefloor. Then there's 'Lick My Chain', a deeper, moodier track with a wall-shaking bassline and a futuristic, sensual atmosphereia slick, immersive cut for those looking to bring the energy down but keep the intensity up. Rounding off the EP is the 'Lick My Chain' (PSL remix), which adds a techy edge and a sexy vocal, transforming the track into a late-night anthem. Review: The brilliantly entitled 1619 Bad Ass Band covered myriad different styles from mellow sound to furious funk on their superlative and self-titled debut long player back in 1976. Two of it's standout tunes now get pulled and pressed on this red hot 7" from P-Vine, complete with a flip-back sleeve. That LP is a rare one amongst the famous TSG catalogue and first up from it is the mid-tempo dance gem 'Nothing Can Stop My Loving You' while on the flip there is the more heavy funk sound of 'Step Out' which anyone who has listened to any DJ Shadow will know he sampled.

Review: To single out a release in catalogue of the 70s famed 'tax scam' label TSG is a hard ask the level of quality remained both consistently and inexplicably high during its two years of operation. Thus calling 1619 Bad Ass Band's 1976 self-titled album a stand-out release doesn't honour the spirit of the catalogue, and yet, by all accounts, everything about this monolithic funk and soul unit is striking.

Prices on the second-hand market for the original LP and 1978 Graham International reissue have priced out virtually everyone for decades. P-Vive is thrilled to be reissuing the album on vinyl fitted with an iconic Japanese obi strip.

Review: The band 2000 Black, who include 4Hero icon Dego among their number, are masters of the broken beat scene, leaders amongst men who whether working alone or with others are always in top form. This two track outing kicks off with 'Soursop & Mango', a bristling, bustling mix of raw drums and bursts of cosmic synth energy that radiates soul, all with neat guitar riffs stitched into the mix. 'Straight Forward Side Steps' is a dusty jam with lovely scruffy claps and much more well defined synth lines adding colour and soul.

Review: A-Trak! You may have been introduced to him as a World Champion turntablist, an iconic indie record label owner, half of Duck Sauce, a producer, a festival DJ, a remixer, Kanye's Tour DJ, or former Juicero advocate, but you may not know that he had a hip-hop record label in the early to mid 2000's, known as Audio Research Records. During this time, Trizzy hooked up with arguably 2 of the best hip-hop groups to come out of that era, producing records for Little Brother and the mighty Dipset. One of the very few Little Brother records that 9th Wonder didn't produce, 'Step Off' falls right in line with the LB aesthetic. A-Trak got busy with a bouncy joint that ended up on tons of mixtapes, available only on ARR 12" until now. Same story with the B-side; there, A-Trak teamed up with Dipset for 'Don't Fool With The Dips!' featuring 40 Cal, Hell Rell, J.R. Writer. Now re-released in collaboration with Fool's Gold Records on 7" vinyl alongside new, original artwork by RHEK.

Review: Following a string of explosive releases on labels like Acid Artists In Action (Triple A), Stay Up Forever, Hydraulix, and Interruption, ACERBIC is raising the stakes with a colossal triple-vinyl, limited-edition LP on the SUF/Hydraulix collaboration label. Packed with nothing but high-energy, dancefloor-destroying cuts, it kicks off with the anthemic 'Acid Way Of Life' and powers through a relentless selection of techno and acid techno bangers that push the boundaries of both genres. No filler, just pure, peaktime fire. Already road-tested by scene legends D.A.V.E. The Drummer and Chris Liberator, this one is sure to rip up rulebooks and dancefloors alike.

Review: Not content with merely being one of the biggest selling indie bands of right now, Yard Act are busy carving themselves a tasty side hustle as A&R men, with their Zen FC label scooping up some of the most exciting other music around as well as their own. This album from Sheffield's long serving synth maverick Adrian Flanagan (Kings Have Long Arms, Eccentronic Research Council, International Teachers Of Pop) is not an obvious choice for the guitar slingers, being closer to electro pop than indie, but it's a compulsive and ingenious listen all the same. Written during lockdown, it follows the rise and fall of an imaginary superstar DJ, each song pushing the narrative along and featuring a plethora of guests, including Richard Hawley and Maxine Peake, both of whom feature at the album's 'comedown' conclusion.

Review: Rashied Ali had a unique talent for transforming unlikely sound pairings into masterpieces. Following Interstellar Space with John Coltrane and Duo Exchange with Frank Lowe, he joined forces with violinist Leroy Jenkins for this album in 1975. Jenkins was fresh from the Revolutionary Ensemble and composed all pieces for this rare duet, which is now reissued on vinyl for the first time in nearly half a century. The deluxe set includes an unreleased session exploring standards, the sounds of Coltrane and some truly wild improvisations. A top treasure for jazz-heads.

Notes: The 'Quaid Megaslope' is a five stage function generator or modulator which operates in one of 3 modes; a multistage 'CZ' or 'Juno' style complex envelope, a super flexible LFO and a step sequencer with per step programmable slew or slides.

Each mode produces a varying output voltage moving from point to point across a set number of chained together stages. Each stage features a destination level, an overall rate or time to reach its destination level and a variable slope for the output path to take. As well as direct control, every stage feature voltage control of both level and rate. There are both unipolar and bipolar voltage outputs together with triggers emitted for the end of each stage and the end of a full cycle.

The Quaid Megaslope is designed to be fun, flexible and intuitive to use.

Review: BOOM! Our favourites, Cititrax, roll the third editions of Tracks out onto our shelves, and the results are unsurprisingly strong on this excellent various artists comp. It's a mixed bag of skills, as per usual, and the sounds are those of a new NYC, fuelled by a new sort of post-industrial sensibility. Amato Y Mariana open with the tight beats and groove of "Queires Bailar", followed closely by the ominous compositions of the EBM-flavoured "Montgat" from The Sixteen Steps. On the flip, His Dirty Secrets bleeps out some morphed acid on "Structures", and "Another Stranger" from Further Reductions churns out a slow, mild-mannered house experiment with its roots clearly planted in the coldest of waves. Sick.

Review: Kibir La Amlak is coming on strong in June with not one but two new offerings on regular home Indicia Dubs. "Lion Step" is another fresh and forward looking four track 10" with a thoroughly futurist twist on the tried and tested dub template. The shimmering leads glisten like buildings in some high rise metropolis, while the snaking leads and stoner effects all add to the escapism. The titular track leads proceedings in slick fashion, while "Lioness Step" slows down to a more meditative pace, with swagger bass for company.

Notes: Reboot of the classic Megacity sequencer, the AS500 follows the same unique approach with up to 64 steps presented in two banks, each split into groups of eight cascading steps.

What's so special about this sequencer?

AS500 is formatted differently and operates differently than other step sequencer.

Traditionally step sequencers run horizontally from left to right then loop back to step one. You can make the pattern shorter, but generally that's it.

AS500 patterns run vertically downwards in columns. As the end of each column is played, the next to the right is played.

AS500 has a unique Jump system. When a Jump switch is on, the rest of the column's steps are bypassed and the sequencer jumps straight to the start of the next column

These two features in particular as familiar enough ways of working to be intuitive, but different enough to force you to work and think in a slightly different way. The end result is you will get sequences and patterns that you might not have created otherwise.

More Variation

Many step sequencers can start to sound repetitive since it's usually the same single pattern looping endlessly.

AS500 allows you to split the sequencer in half and use the right half as a Fill-In pattern to add variation, much like vintage drum machines.

These Fills are activated via a Push Button, or via a trigger pulse from an external modular.

AS500's format and Jump switches, combined with excellent features like Fill-In, Split sequencers and other features makes AS500 a great sequencer package.

Use

If you are familiar with analogue sequencers in general, then most features of AS500 should be fairly self-explanatory, but it would still be worth having a read through the manual.

The sequencer is laid out in vertical columns, eight in total.

The sequencer runs from top to bottom, and left to right.

The Difference Between Reset and Jump

If a Reset is initiated the sequencer returns to step one, the first step of the sequencer.

Use Reset to shorten the sequence.

If a Jump is initiated the sequencer will advance (jump) to step one of the next column to the right.

Review: On 'Ten Steps' and its accompanying tracks, new Fokuz signee Archangel nails a much coveted mixture of sweetness, simplicity and maximalism, etching and planing each final mix as though they were blocks of marble to produce a muted, yearning and propulsive set of workouts in hard liquid. Higher powers and penitent milestones are invoked on the title track, with its memoric cascades of yearner vocals and una corda pianos set against piston-powered breaks. 'U & I' goes on to swirl its vocal samples into sloshy sci-fi garbles of emo science, while 'Darkside' near-perfectly hangs the balance between headbang jump-up and resolute emotion. Serious stuff from the 12" newcomer.

Review: Writers will appreciate the double play on words no doubt, and trying to figure out who wouldn't get off on the Au Pairs is part of the brain teaser here. That said, the British post punk outfit only managed to peak at 79 in the album charts with this one, so clearly back in 1982 plenty of people either felt differently to us or weren't actually listening. Rediscovering the record now confirms their ignorance. Musically, Sense & Sensuality is a far broader collection than the group's preceding work, smashing through the limitations of a genre that was in its Informed by free form jazz, theatrical cabaret, new wave and art pop, it's a wild and unarguably fun ride instrumentally speaking, while lyrics speak to personal challenges and timely political issues.

Review: Au Pairs imploded shortly after releasing this terrific second and last album of theirs. The Birmingham post-punk band are said to have burned the candle at both ends after the success of their debut and rushed into the studio to make this album. Despite internal disputes, the band managed to take their Gang Of Four-esque sound to new levels. They are more adventurous than on the preceding record as there's saxophone and synth, making for a more textured and layered approach than before. Lyrically, Au Pairs are one of the most important bands of their era. Shockingly avant-garde in the early 80s when it was released, they tackled sexuality and gender politics with ire and wit. The standout on this album: 'Sex Without Stress' - a brilliant lampooning of the societal pressure around sex.

Review: You may already know 22-year old Norwegian pop singer Aurora Aksnes for her rendition of Oasis' "Half the World Away" for a John Lewis Christmas advert in 2015, but if not, she's the biggest thing since Robyn. This latest record, following A Different Kind Of Human (Step 1) from last year, presents a third album to date and one that forms the second part of last year's surprise release. Fast-paced, hopeful, dancey and nordically folkal music, (Step 2) sees Aurora deliver something more experimental than before with its themes said to focus on ecological crisis and societal concepts of individualism. Syncopated basslines, staccato vocals and criss-crossing rhythms hit all the right spots in "Apple Tree" while our other pick "In Bottles" combines '90s pop sensationalism with breakbeats made to fit house tempos. Tip!

Review: Norwegian pop singer-songwriter and artist Aurora released Infections Of A Different Kind as a two-part album originally in 2019. Owing to its grand success, it's only taken it five years to reach the status of reissue-worthy! "If there is a god, would we even know his name?... if there is a god, I think he would shake his head and turn away" is one spine-tingling tagline from the album's title track, which gets at the album's Nietzschean themes: be they the trappings of over-indulgent, coddled consumer socities; the climate crisis; or the widespread emphasis of individualism above collectivism. An album with a deeply political heart and soul, it was considered a tonal shift in Aurora's oeuvre, marking the explosive awakening she felt upon its making.

Review: Arther Baker's Dance Masters series continues, as the spotlight turns to another remix legend: one of the originators of the form, John Luongo. Regarded as one of the most influential DJs and mixers of his day, Luongo's many credits include remixes of Jackie Moore's 'This Time Baby', 'Vertigo / Relight My Fire' by Dan Hartman and Patti Labelle's 'Music Is My Way Of Life'. Luongo also went on to establish a production career in his own right, and his legacy is more than cemented here on this retrospective comp from Demon. This box set compiles his most striking tracks in a sixc LP compilation, as well as: a 16-page booklet; an in-depth essay from Alexis Petridis; a foreword by Arthur Baker and a rare photo album from Luongo's personal collection.

Review: This is the second album by Balmorhea for the prestigious classical label Deutsche Grammophon, following their acclaimed 2020 release The Wind. The Austin, Texas duo - composed of Rob Lowe and Michael A. Muller - create cinematic and atmospheric music in a world entirely of its own; a shifting blend of gothic classical, folk, ambient, and post-rock, which rarely feature vocals, and instead thrive on the haunted immersions of the compositions alone. Their new LP Pendant World is a collaborative effort that features contributions from several guest artists and contemporary stars: cellist Clarice Jensen, violinist Hilary Hahn, pianist Nils Frahm, singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez, and electronic producer Rival Consoles. A stunning mesh of sounds, we're not sure where electronic ends and acoustic begins, owing to the album's intended theme of connection, transformation, and evolution.

Review: Bastian's early work on Berlin's iconic Acid Orange sublabel, Tanjobi Records, is a hidden gem that's now resurfaced with serious buzz. This debut release has become increasingly rare and often gets snapped up online by crate-digging heads who rediscover its charms more than a decade on. Channelling the spirit of Khan and the legendary Cologne crew, each track is a masterclass in stripped-back, acid-laced techno minimalism, which is why it's now getting the flowers it always deserved-pure underground gold with title cut 'Centre Fold' being a particularly well-crafted mental and physical workout.

Review: Alexandre Bazin is back on Umor Rex records with what amounts to his most dancefloor orientated sound yet. This latest EP opens with the lo-fi and caustic, dubbed out breaks of 'Grow' before 'Innervision' sinks you into a cosmic synth reverie on gently churning rhythms. There's an indie-shuffle to the organic hits and muted synth melancholia of 'Capture' while 'Push' is brutalist drum machine sleaze. Elsewhere is 'Four Steps' (remix) which is another fizzing fusion of dystopian synths and depraved drum loops and 'Messaging' is a more heady and optimistic melodic beat workout.

Review: BCee returns to Spearhead Records with These Are The Days, a fresh collection that showcases his continued knack for bringing vocal talent to the forefront. This time, he collaborates with thirteen different vocalists, drawing on some of the finest voices in the scene. Over the years, BCee has built a solid reputation not only as a producer but as a tastemaker, steering his Spearhead label to discover and nurture artists who have since skyrocketed - Hybrid Minds and Netsky being prime examples. The tracklist offers a wide range of moods, starting with the title track 'These Are The Days', featuring Zara Kershaw's uplifting vocals. BCee's knack for pairing the right voices with his productions shines through again on 'Imposter' with Degs and 'Lies' with Lauren Archer, blending emotion with groove. Elsewhere, 'Hurt Each Other' sees the soulful Liam Bailey stepping up, while Philippa Hanna and Neon Tigers bring a delicate balance to 'Straight To Your Heart'. Across two LPs, there's a sense of progression and cohesion - from the thoughtful 'Make Time' featuring Catching Cairo to the energised 'Gamble' with Javeon and Abi Flynn. BCee's beats are punchy, yet there's always space for the vocalists to shine. Tracks like 'Stepping Stones' with Tempza and 'Never Too High' featuring Solah maintain the energy, while still offering moments of reflection. This record feels like a celebration of the range of talent in modern drum & bass, with BCee curating the experience from start to finish, ensuring there's something for everyone.
