Review: The Boo Radleys released Giant Steps (The Boo Radleys album), their third full length, in 1993. To mark its 30th anniversary it gets this special reissue on limited coloured vinyl double LP with a bonus 10". The leftfield indie outfit drew on pop, noise, orchestral and reggae to cook up its sounds and managed to be more musically ambitious than they had in the past, titling the album after a John Coltrane album of the same name and paving the way for thhe huge Britpop success via feelgood anthem 'Wake Up Boo!' that would follow.

At the J Awards of 2013, the album was nominated for Australian Album of the Year, it also debuted at Number 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart and produced big singles like 'Sundream' and 'Take Me.' But nothing here is an obvious choice, calling to mind a bygone age when you could still find yourself discovering new material by chart-toppers years after falling in love with them because access to everything was limited. Aligned by a feeling - late nights spent stargazing with equally obsessed musos - what's here is marvelously timeless.

It's quite fitting then that the latter should curate some of the greatest moments of the former on part two of The Classic 12 Inch Master Mixes Volume One. Pettibone's innovative approach to remixing throughout the '80s and early '90s has had a lasting impact on dance music. Featured on here are his renditions of B B & Q's '(I'm A) Dreamer' where he gets that perfect late night boogie-down vibe in effect, as well as Lionel Richie's classic 'Love Will Conquer All', perfectly streamlining the groove of The Salsoul Orchestra's 'Ooh, I Love It (Love Break)' and lending his deft hand to First Choice's anthemic 'Let No Man Put Asunder' among many others.

Review: A whole bunch of Weldon Irvine albums are being remastered and reissued at the moment, which will be music to the ears of spiritual jazz fans - literally. The American composer and pianists was one of the big names of his time and reals don labels like RCA and Strata-East as well as his own label. Young Gifted & Broke has never been on vinyl before as the recordings were only discovered in the early 2010s. It was a musical that was released in 1977 and inspired by the Black Civil Rights anthem 'Young, Gifted and Black,' which Weldon had written with Nina Simone. Talents like Marcus Miller joined the recordings which as can now be heard are magnificent to say the least.

Review: Ollie Nightingale's 1978 gospel-soul classic, Sweet Surrender, sees a much needed re-release on Japanese label, P-Vine. Hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, the Ollie Nightingale project journeyed through various, fruitful iterations - from The Gospel Writer Juniors to The Dixie Nightingale's - before settling on their final form. The result? A sound that is mature and feels fully fleshed out. The opening track, 'Here I Am Again', follows a deliciously slow-paced, side-stepping rhythm, complete with subdued brass and Aretha-hued backing vocals; it's a texturally and emotionally rich classic. 'I Gave Her Everything And What She Needed' is a lyrical masterpiece reflecting on what is revealed when looking back on a past relationship, sees a more pared back take on the instrumentation front, allowing Hoskin's signature vocals to really shine. Leaning more into the funk end of the spectrum, 'It's A Sad Thing' is a track that's sure to get a room moving. Rightly recognised as the most successful southern gospel group of the 50s through to the 60s, Sweet Surrender is a crucial addition to any funk-soul-gospel fan's record collection.

Review: Having previously celebrated dance and pop hits of the 1980s, the long-running Now That's What I Call Music series - itself established that decade - has turned its attention to "alternative". It's a catch-all term that basically includes anything with indie roots, meaning a mix of goth, post-punk, indie, new wave, indie-dance and skewed synth-pop that emerged from the underground rather than the A&R departments of major labels.
