Review: Agents Of Time are a unique Italian dance duo whose poppy dance music blends well with a live 3D show that has dazzled punters the world over. Here they debut their first album, Universo, which plunges into the cosmos through a distinctly lo-fi dance lens. With a slew of vocal performances from Audrey Janssens to Vicky Who?, our favourite track has to be a tie between 'Vocal Ghost' and 'Liquid Fantasy'. Perhaps comparable to Bicep for cosmonauts.

Review: San Fran's unstoppable and enduring tech house craftsman John Tejada is also super reliable. His sound is well established, but he always does enough with each new release to embellish it a little further. Returning now to his home label of Kompakt, he refines his palette to silky melodies, fuzzy pads and crisp beats that are superbly pleasing for both your ears and your heels. 'Sheltered' is a particularly classy cut of deft tech minimalism, 'Spectral Progressions' expires ambient broken beats with lush pad work and 'Panacea' picks up the pace in scintillant fashion. This might be his best work in years.

Review: Around this time each year, Kompakt's latest Total compilation lands and reminds us that Michael Mayer's imprint is still at the top of its game. Predictably, this 17th edition of the annual two-disc trawl though recent label highlights is every bit as essential as its predecessors. Highlights come thick and fast from start to finish, and include - deep breath - the Pet Shop Boys-esque instrumental synth-pop of Thomas/Mayer's "25", the typically Teutonic techno stomp of T Raumschmiere's "Jaguar", the meandering ambient pop of Max Schollp's "The Dream", Kolsch's Boyz Noize-ish "PUSH" and the dense, percussion-heavy thrust of Patrice Baumel's heavyweight "Sorcery". Oh, and a particularly melodious contribution from Parisian legend Laurent Garnier.

Review: With nearly 40 years experience as a producer, having collaborated with everyone from Holger Hiller, Moritz Von Oswald and Juan Atkins among others, Swiss legend Thomas Fehlmann presents Los Lagos ('The Lakes'). It's his seventh solo full-length (and fourth for Koelsch institution Kompakt), following his Berlin inspired 2010 LP Gute Luft. The multi-talented composer and long standing member of The Orb embarked on a deep journey of soul searching while recording the album - and in the process incorporated elements of art, disco, minimalism, jazz and funk. A collection of glacial and textural dub introversions as best exemplified on "Lowenzahnzimmer" or "Morrislouis", but he also makes room for moments of pulsating hypnotic dancefloor dynamics ("Triggerism") and moments of lush ambient bliss reminiscent of his work with Dr. Alex Patterson on "Geworden".

While the ambient outfit has gone through many changes since making its debut in 1989 - longtime production partner Thomas Fehlmann being the man at the controls these days - Patterson shows little sign of wanting to call it a day. Here the duo delivers their 21st album, returning to the stargazing obsessions that have served them so well over the years. Consisting of four typically epic workouts, Moonbuilding 2703 AD doffs a cap to many of their obsessions of recent years - hypnotic Berlin techno, classic ambience, woozy tech-house and dub, primarily - with the jazz-funk-meets-ambient dub flex of the title track standing out. Review: With a sound perfectly crafted for the emotive pop tones of Kompakt, Kolsch delivers the 1977 long player in a cascade of effervescent melody rendered through bold production. There are light, fluffy moments such as the hands-aloft opener "Oma" and the lamenting closer "Felix", while elsewhere you can find the German producer indulging a love of dub techno with the crafty delays of "Basshund". It's not all soft and sweet though, as the electro-house grind of "Eiswinter" attests as it works up a sweaty main room fervour. Likewise "Bappedeckel" has a stadium-sized approach to synths and track dynamics aimed squarely at getting huge crowds moving in unison.

Review: Childhood memories can be some of the most vivid, so it's little surprise to find Kolsch daydreaming about old family holidays on his sophomore full-length, 1983. While it's a thoroughly contemporary sounding album, there's certainly an overtly orange and red, Kodachrome inspired feel to proceedings, as if Kolsch was trying to capture the feel of old family photographs in music. In practice, this means a largely joyous blend of colourful synthesizer melodies, undulating electronic strings, and soft-touch beats inspired by a mixture of classic house, techno, tech-house and early 80s synth pop. Without fail, the resultant music is effortlessly joyous.

Review: Signs Under Test is the 12th album released by John Tejada since his emergence in the late '90s, putting aside the various other projects he's been involved with, this alone is the kind of fact you have to applaud. Arriving some 2 and a bit years on from The Predicting Machine, this new album naturally surfaces via Kompakt and it's 11 tracks suggest Tejada's creative powers remain undimmed despite his vintage. Apparently built from the ground up using hardware synths, Signs Under Test succeeds as Tejada doesn't feel the need to cater to any particular musical trend, instead relying on his tools and his talent to deliver a rich and rewarding listen. Heavyweight 2LP pressing + CD edition.

Review: Kompakt's Total series of compilations is described by the long-serving Cologne imprint as a kind of 'yearbook', with each edition - including this 22nd volume - serving as a keepsake of the label's last 12 months. The latest edition therefore boasts material that was mostly signed and released during the lockdown phase of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, though you'd not know given the club-friendly nature of the material on offer. From start to finish, it's packed with genuine aural treats, from the undulating acid bass, dreamy acoustic guitars and ethereal vocal samples of Voigt & Voigt's 'Why' and the shuffling, opioid warmth of Rebedello's 'The Sharper Image', to the sleazy spoken word vocals and head-nodding hip-hop beats of Jurgen Paap's 'Le Monde a Change', and the deep, hypnotic, spaced-out brilliance of Jonathan Kaspar's 'Where Am I'.

Review: Veteran Los Angeleno producer John Tejada unveils his thirteenth Studio Album entitled Dead Start Program. He named it after a system that started an iconic 1960s supercomputer called the CDC 6600, which is used to represent a 'metaphorical reboot from the challenges life throws at you'. Moreover he's said to have used a 'limited studio setup' to create the 11 tracks on offer. From the moody and disjointed hypnotica of opening track "Autoseek", the old-school west coast breaks of "Sleep Spindle" to the brooding smack electro of "Loss" or the bouncy dancefloor euphoria of "The Looping Generation" - which is indeed classic Tejada all the way! The album comes courtesy of Cologne institution Kompakt: an imprint he's had strong rapport with since 2011.

Review: For his third full-length for the constantly enduring Kompakt label, Axel Willner has decided to take his enduring brand of Balearic loop techno to grandiose new heights. Sonically, the template remains the same - intoxicating layers of guitar, voice and ambient synth loops atop hypnotic dancefloor grooves - but the resultant tracks are just, well, bigger - cinematic, even. Given Willner's inherent skill at producing this kind of baggy, organic techno, the results are rarely less than impressive. As a result, Looping State of Mind makes for thoroughly enjoyable listening, simultaneously appearing ambitiously big and pleasantly intimate. He deserves enormous credit for pulling it off.

Review: It's that time again people: Kompakt rounds up the usual (and not so usual) suspects on its label roster for the year's most definitive collection of dreamy and emotive electronic music for Total 16. There's a lot to get through on here, but as usual; it's all quite brilliant! Starting out with the return of Spanish minimal hero Alex Under on the gloriously uplifting journey track, "Llaman A La Puerta", The Modernist is back also with the sublime deep house of "The Price Of Love" featuring Hot Chip's Joe Goddard on vocals. And of course, the regulars: Jurgen Paap with "Eden"; a true highlight which really nails the label's trademark sound, Matias Aguayo with the bleepy and bumpy retro leanings of "Komm" and label bosses Voigt & Voigt with the rather dark and gloomy epic "Denken Sie Laut".

Review: Moodmusic affiliate Dave DK is no stranger to Kompakt, having featured on several of their compilations over the years and done the odd remix. Their relationship is formalised here with the arrival of Val Maira, the Berlin producer's third album and a concerted attempt to go beyond the impressive production skills previously shown by Dave DK to offer "deeply personal expressiveness and emotional impact". Listening through the eleven tracks on this double LP edition, you'd have to say it's a success; Val Maira is rife with the kind of emotive electronics you expect from a Kompakt LP and is perfectly sequenced to run through a gamut of moods. A fine album from DDK.

Review: It's been a pleasure to see Guilherme 'Gui' Boratto's sound evolve and develop over the course of several albums for Kompakt since he announced his arrival with the classic debut set Chromophobia. Fans of the Brazilian artist's music will be fully aware with the different sounds he's touched on since that 2007 long player, and there's a confidence to the cohesive manner in which all are brought together on Abaporou, Boratto's fourth album. This double LP edition features only 8 of the 13 tracks that make up the album proper, but as you may expect Kompakt have handpicked those tracks best suited for dancefloor deployment, with lead single "Joker" and melodically rich "Indigo" among the highlights. The full album is included on CD format so wax heads can appreciate Abaporou in the manner Boratto intended.

Review: Kompakt's Total compilation series - an annual round up of gems from the imprint's tightly packed release schedule - must be one of the longest-running in dance music. Amazingly, this latest installment is the 14th volume in the series. For those who enjoy Kompakt's generally positive approach to electronic music - think tactile techno, ambient pop and skewed, synth-laden house from the likes of Michael Mayer, Thomas Fehlmann, Partial Arts and Gui Boratto - there's much to admire, including a slew of previously unreleased cuts. These include Superpitcher's "Delta", a sublime chunk of hypnotic e-tronica that's almost too melodic for its' own good. Arguably even better is Weval's live recording of "Something", which is near perfect in its wide-eyed pop simplicity.

Review: As one of the world's steadfast electronic music institutions, Kompakt deserves to make the most of twenty years in the game and the label is doing so with this series of double packs that collate together essential hits from the back catalogue of an intimidating landmark on the techno landscape. All the big hitters you would expect are in attendance, from Michael Mayer with his bass-heavy funker "Lovefood" to Justus Kohncke's electro-flecked strutter "2 After 909". DJ Koze's "Mariposa" represents the more far out edges of the Kompakt sound, and the Lawrence remix of Superpitcher succinctly demonstrates the poppier tones the label has always been known to embrace.
