Review: Malvern's Rave 2 The Grave are a dedicated rave cultural node, committing their entire artistic output to nostalgic remakes of fave rave brainwaves. Adding to their many from-scratch taxidermies - including FSOL's 'Papua New Guinea', Liquid's 'Liquid Is Liquid', 808 State's 'Pacific State' and Outlander's 'Vamp' - they now take up 'Take Me Up' by Soundsource (1991), whose floor-al transmission made it through to being sampled by Rhythm On The Loose on 'Break Of Dawn'; both became fast-track underground hits back then and the rework is just as cracking. On the B is an equally respectful replica of 'Injected With A Poison' by Praga Khan (1992), steering the mood logarithmic, wooping, psychedelic.

Review: Real jungle and jungle techno rufige in full gatefold LP form from 4am Kru. Incognito Rhythm is an ironic name, since the titular track fronting this giant of a record sounds anything but incognito; judging by the full guns-blazing force of its shelling drums and sprayed quad-basses, it might as well have blown its cover, sounding as ballistic as a rubber bullet in a chamber full of springs. After the jungle techno exposition we move forthrightly into classic b-people jungle, with sizzling orchestral rompler workings wedged in with short-form breaks loops to exhilarating effect. The centrifugal mood is broken on 'Deepest Darkest Jungle', on which a much more tenebrous tone is achieved, giving off whiffs of a zoophonic jungle jamboree, the mise-en-scene for a fluting epiphany. The sounds of churlish cheek return from 'High Time' and thereon, after which r&b and ragga voxes predominate and determine the moods of the tracks in question. 'Wutt' is by far the maddest one, refusing at every turn the temptation to settle.

Review: Hyperdrive's label debut was a biggie that brought together old and new-school techno on one fizzing EP. The follow-up comes soon after and this time makes no bones about being a Rave Revival. Anthrophia's 'The Voice' kicks off with what is a hefty breakbeat cut with edgy rave stabs and slamming bass. Dimension 23 - 'Fascination' (Seb G mix) then takes a more stripped-back approach with turbocharged synths layered up over silky drums. Centuras brings plenty of bright, euphoric prog energy to the urgent drum funk of 'Jizz' and last of all Dimension 23's 'The Eagle' then kicks out more dusty old-school breaks with machine gun synth fire. A potent EP, make no mistake.

Review: Whether or not Lennie D'Ice's 'We Are I.E' was the tune that inspired the birth of jungle has long been a matter of debate. Regardless, it was certainly highly influential - a booming, sub-heavy breakbeat hardcore anthem that undoubtedly shifted the musical dial on its initial release in 1991. Here the freshly remastered original - sounding weightier and sharper than ever - is joined by a trio of 21st century interpretations. Solo and Blade kick things off with a crisply chopped and pleasingly rolling re-edit before Horsepower Productions brilliantly re-imagine it as a punchy and powerful breakstep smasher. Arguably best of all though is the take from Bristol's Borai, who brilliantly joins the dots between bassline, 4/4 UKG and saucer-eyed turn-of-the-90s house. Let me hear you scream!

Review: Canadian-born, German-based producer Ash Luk is best known for his work in Minimal Violence, a band that used electronics to create raucous, vivid punk-rock style live experiences, as well as his role as one half of 'doom electronic' duo S.A.T.I.N. alongside Ireen Amnes. Under the Infinity Division moniker he's created more impressively dystopian sonic adventures that channel a suitably wide array of extreme music styles, from isolationist ambience at the start of 'No Reason' - which then twists into industrial junglist madness - to breakbeaty Sisters of Mercy-style coldwave on 'Weather Prophets'. Fans of Alec Empire's notorious Digital Hardcore Recordings label and its output should find this entertainingly terrifying and twisted up musical vision very much up their street.

And this five-piece party pack from one of London's most consistent breaksmiths right now - man like Dwarde - is the perfect way to herald their hardcore legacy. Big pianos, pitched up vocals, swashbuckling Amens and house samples galore, Dwarde takes everyone to 1994 on a big old ravey magic carpet but with an edge and energy that will fit all junglist sets at the same time. Review: Oi oi, gun fingers and glow sticks at the ready for this one, which is a jungle, d&b and hardcore fusion that throws it back to the good old days. 'Feel The Magic' has it all and then some with blistering amen breaks and killer vocal stabs, 'Wheel Up' keeps on the pressure with more irresistibly funky breaks, spin backs and prying synth tone and 'Come Inside' hypnotises with a mystic flute lead before the devastating drums drop once more. 'Breakage #6' shuts down with another lively rhythm that will turn any 'floor into a rave den.

Review: UK Hardcore will never die, especially with labels like Remix continually kicking out the jams. Their latest high grade weaponry comes from Kingside who does indeed super-size the beats here. 'The Right Time' is pure piano-laced euphoria with big breakbeats and a heart-tugging vocal. 'Coming On Strong' then gets more physical as it ups the speed of the drums, works in yelping vocal snatches, kills things dead with filters and generally causes utter carnage. 'Happy Hardcore Track' is an archetypal version of just that. Pure vibes that cannot fail to explode any party with big smiles and hands-in-the-air energy.

Review: Those interested in the roots of UK bass music have been well-served of late, with a number of books and compilations focusing on the first wave of British dance music in the late 80s and early 90s. Soul Jazz's latest compilation is a superb addition to this growing list. It showcases music made in the post-bleep and early breakbeat hardcore period, where basslines got bigger, drum breaks faster, and ragga influences started to come to the fore. The selections are on-point throughout from the dub-wise rave rush of Babylon Timewarp's "Durban Poison" and the bleep-and-breaks-meets-proto-jungle shuffle of DJ Dubplate's "Tings A Go On", to the rave-rap goodness of The Freaky's "Time & Age" and the heavily edited darkcore/early jungle insanity that is Krome & Time's terrific "Ganja Man". In a word: essential.

Review: In 2019, there were no rules when it came to who played what. Feeding into that was a resurgence in higher tempos, trance, rave, gabber, hardcore and just about anything. That's why this monster fifth release on Raver-R is going to be so well received rather than laughed at, as it most certainly would have been in previous years. And why not, because it sure is fun, with slapping drums, mentasm stabs, horns, whistles and overblown female vocals all exploding time and time again. This then is mad decent, and utterly destructive club weaponry.

Review: Certified 'badmen of 2022', Atlanta's Nikki Nair links and London's DJ ADHD link up once again for four furious breakbeat jams. As you'd expect, it's naughtiness from the off as they pair guide us through a whole maze of bass and series of shells. Highlights include the rampant garage thrust and flex of 'Whaa', the wonky grit and rumbles of the EP's title track 'Golden Monkey' and the bashy dystopian radar ripples and eastern string stabs of 'No Pulse'. You'd have to have no pulse to not be feeling this. Go for gold.

Review: Double B is Barry from 2-X-Treme and is surely the most famous rave producer to have come out of Portsmouth. The dance floor don wrote this one at the same time as his celebrated 2-X-Treme EP so brings back plenty of the scone pleasures of that ear. Now pressed up once more it blends breakbeats and UK hardcore across five unrelenting cuts that very much chime with the current leanings of the underground scene towards harder, faster sounds.

Review: DJ Cypher pops up on our radar for the first time here and the indelible mark he makes too. This new album is visceral and coruscated electro funk with dark low ends and ripping acid lines all making it a high-impact assault on your senses. 'Freetwo' in particular is devilishly potent and textured. 'Second Voice' is a barrage of kinetic drum programming and throbbing bass and 'Freeone' is a silky, lithe workout with slamming hits and alien bass energy. Brilliant stuff.

Review: Get to know Mekatune, a brand new label from one of jungle music's most influential but enigmatic pioneers - Marlon M Beat. Prior to this, most of the releases of his music have been without his wish and wrought with complications (to the point he left the industry for over 25 years) But Mekatune is a place for his own material on his own terms. Much of which has been unreleased or never been reissued in years. This EP is a great example; 'Booyaka' was his first breakthrough while '247' is a cult classic. Meka moves.

Review: The Time Is Now to welcome bass legend Samurai Breaks to your ears; the artist's latest record 'Turbo Diesel' is a splittingly fast garage come bassline EP, one boldly unafraid of the upper ranges of the proverbial tempo fader. Described as "another cut of face-melting goodness" by the Shall Not Fade sister label, the likes of 'Exercise Riddim' and 'Wheel Up' bring raw and confident rave sampleage to a brisk doubletime 150-odd BPM, while B-siders 'Turbo Diesel' and 'Supa Wobbly Shedda' hear a seamless mix into juke-footed drum & bass come bassline. We're ordered to "pop the trunk" amid siren blares on the former track, not long before we're bundled into the back and taken on an earnapped ride, the latter track indeed shedding any prior inhibitions we'd harboured.
