Feel Da Vibe (feat Brother Nebula & Alphonse remix)
Cat: MYS 011. Rel: 14 Dec 20
Deep House
  1. Feel Da Vibe
  2. Feel Da Vibe (Brother Nebula remix)
  3. Silver Spaceships
  4. Silver Spaceships (Alphonse remix)
Review: Persian, the man who launched the label in 2017 returns, again offering classics from the archive tapes in the Garage bounce of Feel Da Vibe and the Jungle tinged Silver Spaceships.

Since appearing on Acetate 10" back in (where were you in) '92, Persian, Persian Prince or Artist Formerly Known As PP, aka Peter Riley, has been following his own path, breaking ground with self released, slabs of dynamite wax.

Delivering a myriad of styles, from Breaks to House, Digidub to Jungle, here, as with MYS001, the original masters were handed to contemporaries to work their magic. Brother Nebula aka Lance DeSardi has been around long enough to know the score, switching from Dallas to San Francisco and releasing music on the likes of Fair Park and Siesta, before relocating to London and with his new Legwork label, creating a fresh wave.

The respectful but wonderful spacial dub house remake of the anthem Feel Da Vibe builds perfectly before snaps bring it back down to Earth. Alphonse (Especial / Klasse Wrecks) however, heads for the heavens with an expanse of floating percussion that explores the line between Breaks and Jungle to move Silver Spaceships in to a new decade.

Vibe the Mystery.

  2. Khaab (Project Runaway remix) (7:49)
  3. Parvaaneh (3:07)
  4. Parvaaneh (Alphonse remix) (6:13)
Review: Peter Riley's back story as Persian reaches back to the early 90s - his back catalogue of crucial, sought after deep house cuts is a must-grip for any serious digger of globetrotting grooves. [Emotional] Especial taps up this vaunted producer's archives to present two of the finest productions he's ever committed to wax. "Khaab" is a subtly bumping jam with gorgeous square wave bass, smoky pads and evocative vocal trysts. "Parvaaneh" is a spacier cut that puts the bass front and centre and does away with the drums, making for a powerful, atmospheric statement to create tension mid-set. Project Runaway remix "Khaab" in a respectful, immersive fashion, and Alphonse nudges "Parvaaneh" into a dense and chugging roller.

  2. Persian - "D Dub Retwist" (4:29)
  3. Rumbling Interlude (1:55)
  4. Persian & Nick Dunton - "Milton 21" (5:52)
  5. Persian - "Not Nuff Time" (feat Lauryn) (5:57)
Review: Since kickstarting the Existence Is Resistance label back in 2011, Persian has been on a mission to offer up sleazy, forthright and downright inspired UK bass music. He's at it again on "Revolution", joining forces with various like-minded fellow producers to lay down more scintillating and searing sounds. He first joins forces with DJ Staf for a bombastic revivalist jungle affair (the ace "Revolution"), before inviting Nick Dunton to help wrap wild electronics and gentle melodies around a more off-kilter D&B rhythm on "Milton 21". Elsewhere, Lauryn adds evocative vocals to the dreamy breakbeat flex of "Not Nuff Time", while solo salvo "D Dub Retwist" sounds like a more sub-heavy take on the mid-90s Ninja Tune trip-hop sound.

  2. Persian - "Questions" (edit 5) (4:02)
  3. Lone Wolf Persian (5:50)
  4. Lone Wolf Persian (dub) (5:21)
Review: Feeling full to bursting with nostalgia and an overwhelming desire to get dancefloors moving, Existence is Resistance main man Peter Riley AKA Person returns to action with more bass-heavy heaters. He begins by joining forces with DJ Texta on the weighty, skippy and organ-flecked speed garage revivalism of "Play It Deejay (Dub Mix)", before wrapping cymbal-heavy hardcore breakbeats in psychedelic acid lines, trippy vocal samples and deep space chords on "Questions (Edit 5)". Over on side B, he delivers a deliciously eccentric blend of infant spoken word vocals, bustling breakbeats, moody noises and ear-pleasing melodic elements on "Lone Wolf Persian". A slightly more spaced-out, vocal-free Dub mix completes a tasteful and tidy package.

Well Well Well (D Ross Dubplate Mix 1998)
  1. Persian & DJ Texsta - "Well Well Well" (D Ross dubplate mix)) (5:21)
  2. D-56M - "Homage" (feat Decarlo) (5:11)
  3. Persian - "Parvaaneh" (Retwist) (6:53)
  4. Persian - "Questions" (edit 6) (5:01)
Review: D Ross is in fine form on his dubplate mix of the low slung, swaggering and rude as you like "Well Well Well". It's bass lead garage with an infectious appeal that will make whole warehouses march. D-56M's "Homage" then sinks into more murky techno territory, with wiry electronics and sludgy bass taking you into the unknown and then Persian's "Parvaaneh" slows down a notch further, with dubby chords and twitching synths sinking you into a dream state. He closes out this most interesting and varied of EPs with "Questions", a techno track with dusty breakbeats and deeply buried acid that is fresh indeed.

Deep House
  1. Persian - "Worries In The Dance (Jonny Rock Slightly Tingled Worrior edit"
  2. Vertigo Inc - "Numbers"
  3. Asian Psilocybe Foundation - "Wave Control"
  4. Afrobuddha - "Obame (Treat mix)"
Review: After reissuing the classic Cassiopeia by Nail, Mysticisms return with more cosmically charged party cuts geared towards wiggy dancefloors inside and out. The Alchemy 12" brings together some of the label's key characters to date and some new crew, leading in with the heady, sticky thump of Persian's "Worries In The Dance" as faithfully remixed by Jonny Rock. Vertigo Inc eschew common dynamics for a loping, acoustic groove that favours more esoteric spaces while retaining a strange forward momentum and bewildering atmosphere. Asian Psilocybe Foundation get into a trippy strain of tech house with the gorgeous "Wave Control", and then Afrobuddha rounds the set out with the deeply layered Kakatsitsi drumming of "Obame (Treat Mix)".
