Review: Brussels-based Echo Collective is an extended crew of classically trained musicians helmed by Neil Leiter and Margaret Hermant. While they've been active for some time and worked on countless projects, Plays Amnesiac - a re-imagining of Radiohead's 2001 album of the same name - marks their full-length debut. It's an undeniably impressive collection, with Thom Yorke and company's glitchy, heavily electronic original songs re-cast as neo-classical pieces rich in arresting clarinet and oboe lines, jazzy live drums, cut-glass violins and gentle orchestration. Occasionally projects like this can feel a bit gimmicky, but Plays Amnesiac simply oozes class from start to finish. There are no cheesy gimmicks here, just sublime, classical-jazz fusion cuts that dance from the speakers like the soundtrack of a film we've yet to see.

Review: Rightly or wrongly, some believe that for an album to be truly great, it must take you on a journey. We're not sure yet whether Eddie C's second full-length, Country City Country, is a great album, but it's certainly something of a rollercoaster. Perhaps not a white knuckle ride, but certainly an undulating trip that bristles with vivid creativity and effortless dancefloor warmth. Given the Canadian's crate-digging sensibilities, it's no surprise to find that it's built around carefully chosen samples. Yet this is no mere cut and paste job. Beginning with a slew of lazy, slo-mo shufflers and tactile disco groovers, it sure-footedly works its way to a starlight deep house crescendo via drum machine electro, string-laden jack tracks and electric piano-laden jazz-funk jams.

Review: XXX is a peek into the kaleidoscopic musical brain of Jimmy Edgar. The Detroit native has touched on the influence of Prince and Kraftwerk in his formative years, but you could also point to his past signed to Warp, 80s electro funk, dubstep and the cosmic R&B pioneers SA-RA Creative Partners as musical references here. The prevalent aural mood is taut, hyper sexed future-retro funk as demonstrated on the shimmering talk box flex of "New Touch". There are interesting sonic counterpoints interspersed throughout though. "One Twenty Detail" merges the electronic mind warp of vintage AFX with crushing dubstep kicks and "Push" adds further credence to Edgar's interest in dubstep with a mutant hybrid of midrange bass tears and brilliant pulses of macabre electro. It's Edgar's willingness to change tempos that marks him as one of the better electronic contemporary music producers. "Rewind, Stop That Tape" sounds like a 21st century update on Kool & The Gang's "Summer Madness" whilst "Physical Motion" recalls the aforementioned Sa Ra Creative Partners in their formative pomp.

Review: Despite a production moniker that might raise a chortle or two, Dan Electro has delivered one of 2010's most surprising and unconventional albums in Bite The Hand That Feeds You. Drawing inspiration from everyone from Farley Jackmaster Funk to Louis Jordan, Eddie Kirk and The Five Royales, this caped crusader uses gospel samples and layers them over killer instrumentation that flits between the deeper end of house and disco. "The Side I'm On" has a shuffling percussion and soothing vocal that wouldn't seem out of place in the Moodymann back catalogue, while "Lead Me On" utilises the classic gospel hymn "Take My Hand Precious Lord" to wonderfully moving effect. "I've Got That Feeling" meanwhile borrows the same vocal sample that Anthony "Shake" Shakir once employed to some acclaim. Dan's tunes are a mainstay in the record bags of Gilles Peterson, Joey Negro and the Unabombers; judging on this offering, it's not hard to see why.

Review: There are times when something new comes along at once familiar and yet completely original. The album 'Start To Move' from Elizabeth Shepherd Trio is just that.
