Where's The Revolution (Algiers remix)
Where's The Revolution (Terence Fixmer remix)
Where's The Revolution (Autolux remix)
Review: Throughout their near four-decade career, Depeche Mode have been smart at picking remixers. It should come as little surprise, then, that the CD version of "Where's The Revolution", the first single to be taken from forthcoming full-length Spirit, boasts a superb remix package. The original version - a typically dark fusion of synth-pop and rock produced by Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford - is given a going over by French tecnno/electro sort Terrence Fixmer, Ewan Pearson (with a few additional touches here and there from pal and longtime collaborator Sasse), industrial/noise artist Algiers (AKA Ben Greenberg) and fast rising shoegaze duo Autolux, whose rework pits Martin Gore's vocals against their own distinctive backing track.

Review: Sony continue their efforts to ensure Depeche Mode's 13th studio album Delta Machine receives a record number of remixes with this hefty slab of wax for new single You Should Be Higher. Along with the expected commercially-minded efforts this 12" is perhaps most notable for the pair from UK techno monster Tom Russell, who surprisingly brings his MPIA3 alias out of retirement (hey it's not everyday Depeche Mode come calling) in quite devastating fashion as well as contributing a rework under the more widely established Truss moniker. Also of note is the face down effort from Hessle Audio's Pangaea whose dub mix flirts between broken techno and recycled jungle.

My Favourite Stranger (Lond Island Sound remix) (4:48)
Review: Much loved doom monger emo kids Depeche Mode have always been ripe for remixing by new generations of electronic music artists and so it is that there 'My Favourite Stranger' gets a series of re-rubs here on Columbia. Tech house mainstay Boris Brejcha remixes first and elongates the grooves with mournful pads up top. The Ela Minus remix of the same tune brings some extra textured and darker moods and the best is saved till the last if you ask us. The Lond Island Sound remix is high speed and tinged with electro synth work as the moody vocals echo about the mix to trippy effect.

Wagging Tongues (Hawtin Gaiser remix) (6:29)
Wagging Tongues (Daniel Avery remix) (4:30)
Wagging Tongues (Henning Baer's 808 remix) (4:49)
Review: Depeche Mode's 'Wagging Tongue' was first released in 2023 as the star number from the indelible synthpop band's comeback album and swansong, Memento Mori. Something of downtempo musical elegy, the original track is a crisp exercise in melancholy uplift, colliding the band's usual synthetic arpeggiations with grass-is-greener lyrical themes. Now, however, comes a new ten-track remix bundle, of which select remixes have been chosen for a set of limited releases on wax. Most of the artists enlisted for the job have done a stellar job, amping up the tempo to a neatly electrified 130-ish-bpm, while indulging the zeitgeist's penchant for well-rounded but beefy sonics. On this one, none other than Daniel Avery sticks out with a futureological cosmic electro take, while Hawtin Gaiser opts for knocking big-room techno, and Henning Baer cools things down with a cityscape-soaring 808 remix.

Ghosts Again (Chris Liebing vs Luke Slater remix) (8:02)
Review: First featured on Depeche Mode's critically acclaimed, James Ford-produced 2023 album Memento Mori, 'Ghosts Again' returns in remixed form. Liverpool-based melodic techno maestro Massano (real name Sam Rose) steps up first, delivering a raw, heavy and mind-mangling take that sits somewhere between darkened new wave, moody techno, and early noughties electroclash sounds. It's a fine remix all told that showcases the best of the Basildon band's original synths and vocals, while dragging the track kicking and screaming towards the dancefloor. Techno veterans Chris Liebing and Luke Slater take over on side two, predictably delivering a fearlessly fast, weight and intoxicating take that's as stomping as they come and twice as dirty.

Review: The fifth edition of Depeche Mode's Memento Mori white label remixes series hears four new remixes added to the post-hoc vinyl selection, offered to the world after the release of the synthpop pioneers' most recent eponymous album. Beginning with the demure atmospherics of Chris Avantgarde's 'Before We Drown', then into two propulsive, audio-brut experimental downtempo versions by AC, but not before a brilliant pystrance B1 by Indira Paganotto, which makes for a squarely sagacious sendoff.

Review: Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy The Silence' is one of the seminal band's most celebrated cuts. Here hit is back in focus once more with a new selection of remixes via the newly launched Icons label. Osadon is behind them both and the first tweaks it with some rasping and rugged low ends, plenty of snap in the hi-hats and flashy retro synth sounds. The vocals remain in place and is always going to stand out even all these years later. On the flip comes 'Enjoy The Silence' (Osadon remix - instrumental) which is more paired back and allows those iconic chords to shine.

Review: Enjoy The Silence, Depeche Mode's standout single from Violator, marked a significant moment in the band's career, becoming their most successful UK single since 'Master & Servant' in 1984. 'Enjoy The Silence' captured both critical and public acclaim, peaking at number six in the UK charts and achieving top spots in Denmark and Spain, as well as reaching number eight in the US. The 12" version is beloved by fans with the myriad of great remixes the song provided. This new yellow vinyl version helps meet the demand of an always desirable dance record. The single's success earned Depeche Mode their first Brit Award for Best Single of 1990. This newfound positivity extended to the subsequent reception of Violator, solidifying 'Enjoy The Silence' as an iconic track in Depeche Mode's discography. The song continues to be celebrated for its brooding, tender qualities, and its ability to resonate with audiences globally as well as the iconic video.

Review: Depeche Mode's standout album Violator (1989) produced the landmark song 'Personal Jesus', and with its catchy bluesy riff and innovative but rare use of guitar by the otherwise great synthpop act, the song would upend and expand at the edges of an already well-varied sound. With lyrics inspired by 'Elvis And Me' by Priscilla Presley, exploring themes of devotion and stardom, while the record's controversial promotions saw the band take out personal ads, as well as advertise a phone number through which fans could hear the song. Now Matt Early (aka. Funky Wogan and Hardbag), DJ, producer and remixer extraordinaire of Far Horizon and Sub London fame, lays down an ingenious edit backed by the original number on the flip. It was produced by Ben Hillier and topped charts in 18 countries with the hit 'Precious'' the most standout. The nine-month tour across Europe and North America included festival headlining slots like Coachella and O2 Wireless but a real standout moment from it was their performance at KROQ-FM's Almost Acoustic Christmas concert, which was captured in full and now gets pressed up to this fine double album. Review: It's 1990 and Depeche Mode couldn't really be riding much higher in the global music stakes. Having just released Violator, the band had finally debuted an album inside the Billboard Top 10 for the first time in their almost-decade-long history, and pretty much anyone who came into contact with the record was very quickly captivated by its sound. While definitely not a curveball, it marked an expansion of the group's existing style. Some have described it as synth-pop, others alternative rock. In many ways, it's a dance floor album, one that embraces goth and coldwave at its very core. Captured during their tour at that time, Set In Stone features landmark singles from the LP - 'Personal Jesus', of course, and 'World In My Eyes' - it also proves beyond any doubt that a Depeche Mode show is about more than simply playing the hits.

Review: Seen as one of the most influential albums of the 1980s, Black Celebration was instrumental to the solidification of the synthpop sound, and in 1985, it must have sounded like nothing else at the time - even now, its luscious synths and sunken vocals just sound miles ahead. While many people have tried and ultimately failed to emulate this sound, Black Celebration will remain a gem until the end of time. Another stunning Music On Vinyl unearthing.

Review: Originally released in 1987, this LP really broke down the boundaries of what was considered possible in music making at the time. Coursing through remnants of post-punk and power electronics infused with the band's well-known indie sensibility, it was a real stunner back then and still sounds fresher than ever now. This was their 6th studio album and unlike the title suggests, it most certainly isn't for the commercial-minded folk.

Review: Sometimes one forgets how long this band has been around for and how long they've been making seminal pieces of music which still sound so contemporary in 2014. This being Depeche Mode's fourth studio LP, and bang in the middle of the synthpop uprising, the album is just incomparable to the rest of the chart-based synthpop that was prevalent at the time. It's subtle, musical and deeply experimental, of course. One of our favourites from the band.

Review: Music On Vinyl - the kind souls they are - have beautifully reissued all the best of Depeche Mode, a band so diverse and important to the development of modern music that it seems difficult to describe them in mere words. Released in 1993, Songs Of Faith And Devotion was an absolute hit when it first came out on Mute and was the first of the band's albums to reach the top of the chart. The mood was rawer, more violent than its predecessors and cloaked in a warm blanket of grunge rock. Check it if you haven't already.

Review: Recent reviews of Spirit, Depeche Mode's first studio set for four years, have remarked at how angry and frustrated the band seems to be throughout. Messers Gore, Gahan and Fletcher are not particularly happy with the way the world is right now, and have laid down an album of rare intensity, seemingly fuelled by a growing desperation at political events on both sides of the Atlantic. Producer James Ford undoubtedly played a role in defining the sound of Sprit, but the combination of raucous, punk style guitars, thrusting electronics and big choruses is what we've come to expect from Depeche Mode.

Review: When vital bandmember Andrew Fletcher suddenly passed away at the start of the sessions for 'Memento Mori', even Dave Gahan and Martin Gore wondered aloud whether Depeche Mode would continue. Yet somehow, Gore and Gahan put their much-discussed differences aside, knuckled down and produced something fittingly special: an album that may well be the iconic outfit's most consistent and impressive body of work for decades. Naturally, darkness abounds, with opener 'My Cosmos Is Mine' - all evocative vocals, distorted electronic beats, dark sonic textures and mutilated choral vocal samples - setting the tone for a set that once again brilliantly blends dark synth-pop, gnarled guitars and the kind of lyrical melancholia that stays with you for days. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including 'Ghosts Again', 'Soul With Me' and closing cut 'Speak To Me'.

Review: This deluxe edition of Depeche Mode's latest album Memento Mori features a wealth of additional material, adding all manner of tangents in relation to the former trio's (now duo's) ultimate reflection on death. Centring on the mood of grief after the passing of the band's founding member Andrew 'Fletch' Fletcher, this is the first LP by a Depeche Mode made up of only two remaining members: Gahan and Gore. It hears a sadder, gloomier yet no less slowly euphoric sound, with lead singles like 'Ghosts Again' presenting a kind of conflicted melancholia.

Review: Where do you start with a band like Depeche Mode? Easily up there with the most influential British live acts of the late-20th Century, and early-mid-21st - a term we specifically use because their work spans so many genres, from synth pop and new wave to alt and dance rock - the fact just one of their records can garner the kind of reverence that can produce 33 remixes by some of the most respected names in electronic sounds says more than we ever could even if this paragraph went on forever.

Here we have it, then, definitive collection of repurposed and rethought songs from the 2001 LP, Exciter. Veering from the deep proggyness of Danny Tenaglia's take on 'I Feel Loved', through Dave Clarke's breakneck sledgehammer-yet-spacey techno interpretation of 'Dream On', broad sounds would be putting it mildly indeed. Other highlights including the lucid downbeat of Bertrant Burgalat, epic dance metal of DJ Muggs, and sparse, stargazing atmospheres of Isan Falling Leaf.

Depeche Mode's latest album Memento Mori is one that has been madly anticipated by fans. The record - which comes on wax and in a lovely embossed sleeve here - centres on the mood of grief after the passing of the band's founding member Andrew "Fletch" Fletcher, this is the first LP by a Depeche Mode made up of only two remaining members: Dave Gahan and Martin Gore. The band's progression in their latest years have heard them move into darker, peakier, sadder and more industrial themes, as they make do with a future-present that wasn't promised to them in the 80s, while drawing on deathly topoi and nodding to Ingmar Bergman.

Review: It's hard to know whether to bother reviewing this release at all, or simply opt for the following summary: Depeche Mode, titans of synth and one of the UK's most important bands of the late-20th Century (and today), offer a vast collection of tracks from their 2005 album, Playing the Angel, remixed by a host of massive names from the dance and electronic world.

Still not convinced? OK, how about this - Depeche Mode x Jacques Le Cont, M83, Sasha, Tiefschwarz, Tiga, Michael Mayer, Metope, Alter Ego, Robag Wruhme, Goldfrapp, Telex and more. With so much happening and such variety on offer within, it's probably best to hit play on the lot and see what takes your fancy, smart money being on all of them. Either that, or just go with your gut and buy before you try.

Review: 32 years on from the release of their debut album Speak and Spell, Basildon's finest drop their 14th full length. While there are echoes of their eyeliner-wearing, synth-bothering futurist past (see the glitchy "My Little Universe" and early New Order-ish "Broken", where Dave Gahan sings about 'dreaming of the future'), for the most part Delta Machine finds them in grinchy synth-rock mode, presumably shaking their fists at passing youngsters like a gang of grumpy old men. Thankfully, they're still capable of great things - "Soothe My Soul" has echoes of "Personal Jesus" - and there's enough to suggest there's some life in the old dogs yet.

Review: The vast array of Depeche Mode originals cover plenty of ground and many years of hard and critically acclaimed work. As such they're a gold mine for artists looking to add their own spin and plenty of the most ear-grabbing of those radio, dub and club mixes are collected together here on a rather epic seven slabs of wax in one bumper box set with a poster and digital download. Works by contemporary artists like Trentemoller and Justus Kohncke sit next to techno titans like Ben Klock, trance mainstays such as Sander Van Doorn and even EDM stars like Laidback Luke. A varied mix with something for everyone.

Review: You can always count on Depeche Mode to do things differently. Never content to play it safe despite their position as a global superstars, as the 80s turned into the 90s they collaborated with celebrated filmmaker Anton Corbijn on the music videos from their albums Music For The Masses and Violator. The first set were gathered together at Strange in 1988, with the follow-up released as Strange Too in 1990. In between the music videos for megahits like ‘Personal Jesus’ and ‘Enjoy The Silence’ were additional vignettes and incidentals, all filmed by Corbijn on his trusty Super 8, and the end results have become synonymous with the Mode’s visual aesthetic. Now both films have been gathered together in one handy Blu Ray package, digitally remastered without losing that all-important grainy finish.

Review: When Depeche Mode teamed up with Anton Corbijn to make some music videos, few could have predicted the end results. If you ever thought there’s an artful consistency to the Mode’s music videos from the late 80s and early 90s, it’s because Corbijn filmed them all on a shoestring budget on his trusty Super 8 camera. The resulting pieces were strung together as vignettes forming a larger cinematic experience which was released in two instalments - Strange and Strange Too. Originally released on VHS and Laserdisc, the films have finally been bundled together, digitally restored and presented in this DVD box set with bonus material.

Recorded in San Francisco, this live set detailed their evolution as they blended dark synth-pop with raw, rock-infused energy. Classics like 'Rush' and 'World In My Eyes' shine alongside then-newer, grittier tracks that showcased Dave Gahan's electrifying vocals and Martin Gore's emotive songwriting. The high-quality audio helps immerse you in the band's onstage charisma while offering a nostalgic yet timeless revisit to a wonderful period in the band's history.

Modern day Amsterdam is a bit of an oxymoron. On the one hand, the city proudly brandishes its reputation for alternative and sub cultures, pushing back against lawmakers and their incoherent policies to adopt approaches that are more realistic and levelheaded. On the other, its a place of such rampant commercial development the local government actively discourages visitors and new hotel developments. Look closely, though, and you can still feel the spirit of what, during the latter half of the 20th Century, made this place so special. Paradiso is one of those spots. A waterside cultural venue with a history first as a church, then an illegal squat, before becoming what it is today, the walls themselves seem to pervade a sense of brave, adventurous heritage. An ideal place to catch one of the most defining bands of the 1980s in their heyday, then, here Depeche Mode deliver an astounding set in a space with the atmosphere to match.

Review: Depeche Mode's 1983 concert at the iconic London venue - now the Apollo - boasts a stunning set list that feels like a complete impression of a band that have helped defined pop, and specifically UK pop, for the best part of half a century. It's almost as good as seeing them live, at a London spot that speaks to a less polished period in cultural history we really shouldn't take for granted.

Review: There's something fascinating about hearing the sound of true icons at their embryonic stage, and that's exactly what you get with this rare radio broadcast recording of Basildon's finest, Depeche Mode. In 1981 they had just released their debut album Speak & Spell and were still largely gigging around London and their native Essex (bar a sojourn to Hamburg). Before Vince Clarke left the band at the end of the year this session was recorded, showcasing the raw but seductively powerful sound of the band when they were still but teenagers trying their hand at this emergent synth-pop thing. Compared to the polish you might expect from the majority of the band's output, it's Depeche Mode reflecting the more typical minimal wave sound of the era, which is a treat in itself.

Never Let Me Down Again
Review: Featuring as it does six discs of live recordings, Music Portrait is veritable feast for Depeche Mode fans. All of the material was originally recorded for radio broadcasts. Discs one and two feature what appears to be an almost complete 1998 concert featuring such perennial favourites as 'Policy of Truth', 'Personal Jesus', 'It's No Good' and 'Just Can't Get Enough' (a triumphant, sing-along conclusion all told), while CD three offers up 11 songs from a set recorded in 2005. The other three discs feature recordings of solo outings from Dave Gahan, with big Depeche Mode hits being joined by personal favourites and deep cuts from the Basildon Band's 40-plus year career.

Review: Depeche Mode's Radio Transmission 2001 encapsulates the band's evolution and enduring influence on the electronic landscape. The album showcases their mastery of blending dark, brooding atmospheres with pulsating rhythms and haunting melodies. Depeche Mode's signature sound, characterised by introspective lyrics and innovative synth textures, is fully realised here in an album that, here pressed up on pink wax, contains the 'Hits Walking In My Shoes,' 'Enjoy The Silence' and many more that have more than stood the test of time.

Review: Depeche Mode's new album Memento Mori is a rather bittersweet one for fans - they are of course happy to hear fresh material from their favour electronic doom mongers, but it is also the last time they will hear music from the group featuring corer member Andrew Fletcher, who suddenly passed away at the start of the sessions. Remaining members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore wondered if they would carry on, but carry on they did. And we're glad they did, as this is one of their best albums in years with darkness abounding. Their progression in their latest years have heard them move into darker, peakier, sadder and more industrial themes while drawing on deathly topoi.
