Review: The Lonewolf label strikes again with another intriguing new 12" that mixes up synth, wave and electro. E Bony is behind it and we know nothing of who they are but they clearly know how to coax some magic out of their machines. 'Hello & Goodbye' opens with rasping electro bass and rugged analogue drums while 'Half Man' takes off on a more arresting and peak time trip to the stars. 'No One Is Here' has silky arps and classic electro bleeps driving it along while the B-side begins with a La Mverte remix that brings plenty of metallic dark disco chug to the floor. The original is another bright, twitchy electro workout.

Review: Eagles & Butterflies has had plenty of notable tunes over the years. No doubt that is why he gets the nod from Gerd Jansen's legendary Running back label to offer up Retropolis Vol 01. It is a four-track EP that shows off the producer's well-realised sounds. The title track is the real standout - 'Retropolis' brings electro-styled synth work with brilliantly future retro euro-disco energy. It's packed with hints of Italo and is sure to light up any club scene. Says the producer of the EP, "Retropolis is the past meets the future. I love influences and technology from the past and making music that sounds like it could be from a time yet to arrive." Mission accomplished.

Personal Jesus (Matt Early instrumental) (5:46)
Review: Depeche Mode's standout album Violator (1989) produced the landmark song 'Personal Jesus', and with its catchy bluesy riff and innovative but rare use of guitar by the otherwise great synthpop act, the song would upend and expand at the edges of an already well-varied sound. With lyrics inspired by 'Elvis And Me' by Priscilla Presley, exploring themes of devotion and stardom, while the record's controversial promotions saw the band take out personal ads, as well as advertise a phone number through which fans could hear the song. Now Matt Early (aka. Funky Wogan and Hardbag), DJ, producer and remixer extraordinaire of Far Horizon and Sub London fame, lays down an ingenious edit backed by the original number on the flip. Limited numbers on this furtive output, so keep your shopping cart fingers poised...

Eyes Of Glass (vocal) (6:55)
Eyes Of Glass (instrumental) (7:13)
Review: To accompany their re-release of East Wall's superb 1991 debut album, Silence, Dark Entries has decided to put out the Italian band's forgotten debut release, 1985 single "Eye of Glass". Tending towards the darker end of the Italo-disco spectrum, but blessed with typically cheery synthesizer melodies and skewed female vocals, it's a record that seems far more inspired by the earlier British new wave synth-pop movement than pleasing the clubs of Rome or Rimini. The vocal version is accompanied by a subtly different instrumental, which includes waves of warm synths and offers more prominence to the band's bubbly electronics, throbbing arpeggio bassline, and delay-laden drum machine hits.

Our Last Night (feat Mironas) (7:15)
Different Versions Of Your Love (7:04)
Review: We are living in the post-Innervisions dance world, long after the dust has settled on the hype and hysteria drummed up both by the label itself, and tastemaking publications on its behalf at the turn of the last decade. But that doesn't mean for a second the imprint's quality control, and ear for exceptional deep, synthy dancefloor stuff has waned - it's just a case of trends moving on.

And when trends move on it usually improves what's left behind, en vogue often leading to an endless stream of great pretenders and tired replicas. Night Versions, the latest EP from Thessaloniki-based Greek producer Echonomist is a great case in point. Packing two tracks of coldwave-infused house, from the broken, trapped energy vibes of 'Our Last Night', to the dark twisted vocals of 'Different Versions of Your Love', it's all fresh enough to make you forget just how much we've heard from this camp before.

Immer (instrumental) (5:09)
Review: Gerd Jansen's Running Back is brilliantly and effortlessly eclectic. It's a label that does easy to love house anthems as well as more experimental fair and plenty in between. And that's where Ede & Deckert sit - in a world to the left of centre with catchy synth tunes feat. Sargland. 'Immer' is their latest and pairs doleful guitar riffs a la Joy Division with soul vocals and slick drums that will work in the right dance floor setting. It's a great sound and one that has the potential to become something of an unlikely underground dance hit. The B-side has an instrumental that allows the synth work to shine more.

You & I (I-Robots Reconstruction) (9:02)
Review: First released way back in 1984, Ego Neco's sole single is an Italo-disco obscurity that has long been sought-after by dusty-fingered crate diggers. Step forward Turin Dancefloor Express, a label dedicated to celebrating the city's disco and post-disco heritage. Their pleasing reissue boasts both versions from the original 12": the sparkling, synth-heavy original mix, where stylish, new wave-influenced female vocals ride unfussy machine drums, squelchy bass, freestyle-influenced melodic motifs and colourful lead leads, and the dub mix-style 'Instrumental'. We also get a bonus I-Robots 'reconstruction', which successfully strips back the track to bass, drums and shimmering lead lines before introducing the rest of the original's vibrant synth sounds.

Review: After debuting with that killer reissue of Papertiger and the Catcammer Orchestra's German disco wonder "In The Disko", Alexander 'Spacelex' Arpeggio's Mond Musik return with a second, and equally enlightening offering. Eiskalte Engel was the work of early 80s Mannheim artist Michael Bundt who's pop-brushed take on the NDW sound resulted in some minimalist dance tracks with undeniable hooks. This 12" is a fine introduction to Bundt's work for modern ears, pairing up two tracks from his one album with a selection of well-chosen remixers and extended versions. The archivally inquisitive minds will find much to savour in the original versions of "Mach Mich Nicht An Mann", "Die Kinder Aus Asbest" and "ROM" whilst Albion, Nixxon and Flemming Dalum & Steen Gjerulff all excel with their remixes.

Review: Back in 2022, Colombian Ela Minus and New York's DJ Python stopped their superb collaborative EP, 'Heart', on the Smuggler's Way label. Now they have it remixed by the one and only Ricardo Villalobos, king of the curveball selection and endlessly long and evolving minimal techno workout. He deals in the sort of hi fidelity sonics that few others can touch and that is exactly the case here across two of his more standout recent works. In the originals, DJ Python's immersive instrumentals and Ela Minus vocals on liberation and intimacy make for deeply affecting listening and here the Chilean works them into a 40-minute epic and 13-minute tech house stepper.

Sweet 80's
Review: Electrodynamique is an alter ego for Kirill Rem, who deals in a mixed up spectrum of electroid club gear spanning the trancey throb of 'Touch The Rhythm', the vocodered Italo stylings of 'Electrique Future', 'E-Motion's early 00s electroclash strut and the EBM pulse of 'Sweet 80's'. There's a sense of unbridled fun in the music, and just enough naivety to make it sincere. Equally important is the fact Rem doesn't just riff on the classic styles, but metabolises them into his own unique brew, which finds a fitting home on Berlin label Superluminal.

Review: Elektronik Body Girl is the musical alter-ego of Shelbatra Jashari featuring production assistance from Brussels's soFa. The Belgo-Albanian postpunk pair cooked up sounds that accompany an imagined dystopian industrial wasteland with tons of improv and lots of raw, jagged rhythm. Dealing with the "empowering feminine" and its representation were key to the vision of Jashari as well as abrasive textures and stark atmospheres. Her vocals touch on her roots in Belgium and Kosovo from an outsider's position and label associate Toulouse Low Trax cooks up a brilliant beatdown mix to seal the deal.

The Shape Of Things (4:30)
Review: If you thought that synth-pop was dead nowadays then Element 104 are surely the ones to lift the genre from its supposed grave. Busting their meandering electro-vocal charms out on Kernkrach - Heinz Stelte's long-running imprint - the trio offer two driving dancefloor cuts with utterly memorable lyrics and one hell of a guitar riff, the former sounding like it's come straight out of an '80s pulp B-movie, and the latter heading down more psychedelic territories in the company of metallic drum machines and that neo-romantic swagger. Lovely stuff.

Sitting On Chairs (5:33)
Just Be Happy (Dmitry Distant remix) (7:57)
Review: Since reforming in 2011, seminal Rochester coldwave collective Eleven Pond have been selective with their outings. With a 25 year gap in their releases, there seemed no point in rushing. Rather, they've honed their sound and recontextualised it within modern references. The crisp production and heavy use of acid on "Just Be Happy" taps into a venn overlap between New Order and Underworld, while "Sitting On Chairs" takes on a much more subdued poetic approach that really relishes in the band's roots. For added future resonance there's also a mean dark room tech by Dmitry Distant. Yet another reason to be happy.

The skilled duo kick off with the high-speed arps and tight kicks of the retro-future smoother 'Forever Alone' then slow things down to a more Balearic and breezy vibe on 'Conga Coronation' with its finger clicks and lush pads. There is soft acid magic at the heart of 'Sphere Of Missing Out' while 'Cosmic Tribune' lulls you into a nice widescreen cosmic world of tumbling chord sequences and warped bass.

The label head, DJ and producer was there at the start of such scenes back in the early 90s and now there is a revival for that stuff she is best placed to do it with real authority. For this one she joins forces with Italian synth wave band Ash Code to cook up three tracks where Napoli meet Berlin, cold wave collides with techno and fresh new dancefloor magic happens. It's a dynamic sound world with jacked up drums, moody synths and icy vocals all arresting your every sense.

Review: Kernkrach's sublabel, Hertz-Schrittmacher, comes through with a sublime two-tracker by Gotz Langenbruch and Joa Saliena's Epic Dreams; a project reserved to bringing back the musical freedom which so readily characterised the 1980's. The duo have only put out a string of releases, including two self-released LP's, so it's a pleasure to hear what they're up to now. "Kein Paradies" is a bittersweet track led by fast-paced drum machine kicks and poppy German vocals. On the B-side, "Leuccthurm" is more uplifting and club-ready, but still with enough vintage melancholia to be heard in and outside the dance. Two slices of German synth funk for you, give 'em a spin!

Stop/Begin Again (Meat Beat Manifesto remix) (3:12)
Review: First released in 2022, post-punk and industrial music legend Stephen Mallinder (half of Cabaret Voltaire for 40 years) returned for another collaboration with Eric Random (a storied post-punk UK musician in his own right) for the short EP 'Deadeye', consisting of two non-eponymous tracks, 'One Way No Run' and 'Stop / Begin Again'. Combining hypnotic rhythms, trembly synthwork and raucous whisper-singing, the songs form part of a series of releases from Eric Random for 2022-23 on the label eMERGENCY heARTS: an anarchist-run, indie collaborative media hub in Austin, Texas, spotlighting post-punk, outsider and non-genre specific music with political and darkwave aesthetics. Now reissued in late 2023 by Greece's very own Kinetik, the new version of the release hears two whopping and unprecedented remixes from Meat Beat Manifesto, who's remained at the bleeding edge of the fusion of said genres, together with IDM and techno, since he started out. The tracks are completely upended; flaymorphosed out from their original broken beaty, clean sensibilities and into far grittier and dirtier sonic gutters, ducts, bung pipes and vents.

Earth (Passarani HiNRG remix) (8:50)
Review: It would be fair to say that Montreal duo Essaie Pas don't have a particularly positive view of our planet. "Earth, what a shithole," they moodily grumble on the title track from their latest EP on DFA, their first since the release of last year's "New Path" LP. The cut itself is perhaps not quite as dark as you'd expect, with its throbbing, dark Italo-style arpeggio bass and crunchy drum hits being peppered with sharp, trance style synthesizer motifs, bubbly electronic riffs and female vocals that add an extra frisson of positivity. Italian scene stalwart Marco Passarani delivers a flipside interpretation that brilliantly re-casts the cut as a Bobby Orlando style mid-1980s Hi-NRG club cut, while bonus track "Corps Etranger" is a pleasingly sparse, bubbly and alien-sounding chunk of intergalactic electro.
