4 You (Maya Jane Coles remix)
4 You (2000 & One remix)
4 You
Review: Marc Kinchen is kinda worshipped here at Juno - "Given", released in 1993 on his Area label (and soon to get re-released on Omar S's FXHE), is a classic example of the US garage sound that was taken on by Todd Edwards et al in later years. "4You", which appeared on the same 12" as the aforementioned "Given", is here treated to a repress on Defected with a brace of contemporary remixes from Maya Jane Coles and 2000 And One. Coles - who owes a great deal of her sound to the likes of MK - serves up a driving tech house retweak, while 2000 And One brings the brass to the fore on his version, indulging those late night keys. As good as they are, nothing beats the original cut. That bassline, that clipped vocal, it all still works ... brilliantly.

Tensnake - "Coma Cat" (Chloe Caillet remix) (5:45)
Harry Romero - "Revolution" (House Masters edit) (5:13)
Prunk & Rona Ray - "Keep It Simple" (6:41)
Review: The mighty Defeated has got a fun package on its hands here with some fat disco and house anthems primed and ready for big room summer fun. A'Studio's 'SOS' (feat Polina - Skylark remix - Nic Fanciulli edit) is chunky house with a hooky vocal and rolling groove designed to sweep you up and away. Chloe Caillet then remixes Tensnake's classic 'Coma Cat' into a hands-in-the-air house stomper with epic strings. Harry Romero's sweaty 'Revolution' gets its drums buffed up and well swung by a House Master's Edit and Prunk & Rona Ray steal the EP at the last with their lush vocal house cut 'Keep It Simple.'

All I Want (extended NRG remix) (7:06)
All I Want (Purple Disco Machine remix) (8:08)
All I Want (DJ Tennis remix) (7:16)
Review: Boys Noize and Defected seem like rather odd bedfellows on paper. The former is known for making caustic, in your face club tracks that are aggressive and heavily textured. The latter is one of house music's most smooth and feel good labels. Yet with 'All I Want (feat Jake Shears)' they somehow find a sweet spot between the two. The tune has gauzy chord vamps and and a rigid beat, but the vocal is catchy and smooth, while the bass sequence is sure to lock in any crowd. The remixes take in star-gazing, upbeat disco house funk and dub, stripped back and trance inducing minimalism from DJ Tennis.

Mason Collective X Bipolar Sunshine - "People In Love" (6:53)
Arielle Free - "Feels So Good" (5:35)
Bob Sinclar X A-Trak X Mele - "Deep Inside Of Me" (5:08)
Review: Defected's vinyl series continues to commit the label's biggest digital releases to wax for the first time, and this special twentieth edition has been created in partnership with Shelter, the housing and homeless charity. Together, in July 2023, the label and charity launched 'From House To Home', which pioneers an ingenious idea; taking 'house music' to its utmost logical conclusion, deploying reworks classic house tracks as fundraisers for helping secure actual housing for the homeless. On this latest edition to the series, Germany's Jonathan Kaspar remixes Breach's revered deep house anthem, 'Jack'. Then comes the bubbling Mason Collective and Bipolar Sunshine collab 'People In Love', shortly followed by the recent pop hit by Arielle Free, 'Feels So Good', before a round-off in the form of a generational collaboration between production pioneers Bob Sinclar, A-Trak, and Mele with 'Deep Inside Of Me'.

Hannah Wants - "The One" (feat Ara) (6:13)
Archie Hamilton - "Let The Light In" (feat HQA) (7:05)
Ferreck Dawn - "Better" (feat Jena) (5:45)
Review: Some of tech house's biggest names feature on this new Defected 12" alongside a trio of more contemporary talents. Butch & Nic Fanciulli are very much in the first category and they offer the happy hosue and big samples of 'I Want You' before new schooler Hannah Wants rolls out a chunky house groove with blissed out Ibiza vocal energy on 'The One' (feat Ara). Archie Hamilton pairs old school Chicago energy with a fresh vocal on the anthemic 'Let The Light In' (feat HQA) then Dutchman Ferreck Dawn shuts down with the crossover dance sounds of 'Better' (feat Jena).

What Would You Do (12" mix) (4:59)
What Would You Do (Expansions NYC dub vocal) (7:10)
Review: Get ready for a rush-inducing dose of proper soulful vocal house from the mighty Dames Brown. On this record for Defected, Detroit's foremost trio of Athena Johnson, Lisa Cunningham and Teresa Marbury linked up with the mighty Amp Fiddler and Andres for a rip through house music as real as it gets. The original 12" mix of 'What Would You Do?' is hard to beat for raw, heavy-hitting groove and production, but there are some choice remixes included here for those who have different needs, whether it's the bouncy jazz funk of Two Soul Fusion's version or the smoother sound of Folamour creating a sleek disco house variation for the peak time crowd.

Glory (5:58)
Glory (Kelly G Dancing dub club mix) (7:55)
Glory (Floorplan remix) (7:21)
Review: When it comes to gospel-powered 21st century dance music, Detroit trio Dames Brown have been involved in many of the most memorable records - not least Sophie Lloyd anthem 'Calling Out' and Horse Meat Disco hook-up 'Message To The People'. Here they join forces with fellow Motor City musician Waajeed for another arms-aloft classic in the making. In its original form, 'Glory' blurs the boundaries between gospel disco and gospel house, with the trio's powerful vocals rising rubbery bass guitar, loose-limbed beats and riotous organ licks aplenty. It comes accompanied by two fine remixes: a stomping, piano riff-powered gospel house take from Rob and Lyric Hood's Floorplan project, and a stomping, thickset gospel disco 'dancing club dub' courtesy of Kelly G.

Formula (Reboot remix)
Review: Established in 1999, Defected records have a ludicrously huge discography, boasting some of dance music's most established and respected names as contributors. For DFTD287 (!!!) they announce German duo Dalton. Driven by 4 x 4 bass drums and claiming that they simply want to "send the party into ecstasy", Dualton are a fine choice for Defected with "Formula" (the original mix was released last year). Cadenza artist Reboot gets given remix duty on the flip, and the outcome is as darkly twisted as it is infectiously danceable, expertly blending house and techno production values to devastating effect.

FCL - "Behold"
The Track Addicts - "A Place Not 2 Far"
Jump Chico Slamm - "Feel Free"
Stacy Kidd - "How Bad I Want Ya" (feat Peven Everett - radio mix)
Review: Last month saw Red D and San Soda join the select cast of DJs to contribute to Defected's signature In The House mix series with a fine Double CD set that saw the FCL pair each turn in a mix of currents and classics. The mandatory 12" sampler now arrives as a vinyl accoutrement with FCL's own contribution "Behold" augmented by three highlights of the CD mixes. Rich with soulful touches and deep house classicism, "Behold" is FCL laying down a fine chord driven production that is the epitome of dreamy. A classic from the late '90s canon of Nick Holder follows with the forthright Track Addicts cut "A Place Not 2 Far" whilst the B side holds some real heat from Jump Chico Slamm and the always welcome sight of Peven Everett's vocals lacing a house groove, in this case Stacy Kidd's "How Bad I Want Ya".

Review: Back in the 980s everything Pete Heller and Terry Farley touched turned to go. So much so that ensuing generations continue to connect with their work and now Defected invite a wealth of new school producers to add their own spin to the huge "Ultra Flava". David Penn goes for a hands in the air, festival version, a 2016 version from the artists themselves gets more twisted but keeps its vibes 90s bassline in tact, then Darius Syrossian goes harder and faster with his sweaty rework. Low Steppa & Johan S go for a thoroughly modern rework with shuffling drums.

Defected In The House Ibiza 2014 (Album Sampler)

House Master Baldwin - "Don’t Lead Me" (feat Paris Gray - drumapella)
Aaron Carl - "Down"
Classixx - "Into The Valley" (Julio Bashmore remix)
Guti & The Brain - "Opus 2"
Review: Defected's rejuvenation long-since established, it should come as no surprise that this sampler is bulging with genuine house gems... The consummate calling card for their shenanigans at Booom on this island this summer, this sampler ranges from the naked breakbeats and vocals on "Don't Lead Me" to the lo-fi struts of the new wave "Down" via the timeless synth persistence of Bashmore's remix of "Into The Valley". Complete with pristine acid soul from Hercules & Love Affair and a deep down bass-drenched jackfest from Guti & The Brain, this really is a faultless collection.

My Paradise (8:04)
My Paradise (Vintage Culture remix) (5:34)
My Paradise (Damian Lazarus Re-Shape) (7:04)
Review: Defected needs no introduction, simply a reiteration that its no secret its one of the most influential house labels around today. Jamie Jones made a huge splash at Ibiza's 2022 season with this track, receiving support across the board from underground tastemakers to daytime radio. Bolstered by the remixes of Brazilian icon Vintage Culture and the alchemist himself, longtime Ibiza master Damian Lazarus on this rolling feel-good house groove. It's easy to see the mass appeal of such a sunny track.

While Jamie explored disco influences with his signature high-energy groove on the original, Vintage Culture's clear-cut trademark sound gives a distinctly tougher feel, a chugging bassline and rolling synths giving it that dark club side. Lazarus, the soundshifter that he is, reshapes the track in his image. Culminating in a more abstract, chopped-up house entry, undeniably funky with some synths and keys that sound like they shouldn't work - but by God do they.

Kings Of Tomorrow - "Can't Stop" (feat Rae)
Zed Bias - "Mighty Dub" (feat Randolph)
Season & Sygaire - "Open To Love" (feat Randolph Matthews)
Tribe - "Livin In A New Day" (C2 remix)
Review: Taken from Gilles' forthcoming 'In the House' compilation, Defected bring you the third in a series of three 12"s containing exclusive house productions
commissioned by Gilles Peterson himself. Whereas the word 'exclusive' is used by almost every label on any old release these days, this is one of the few
times where it definitely is required. Every track on these 3 pieces of vinyl have never before been released and are produced specifically for this product.
Carl Craig, Karizma, DJ Sneak, Peter Kruder, Sandy Rivera, Zed Bias - the list just goes on and on. Any serious House DJ who doesn't get their hands on
these releases should hang up their headphones in shame.

Review: Committed to bringing their biggest digital releases to wax, funky house house powerhouse Defected delivers a package of top notch heaters here for their vinyl debut. On EP12, we have Spaniard David Penn with the scorching disco inferno of 'Lift Your Hands Up' featuring the fine vocal talents of Ramona Renea, followed by Penn's rework of the perfect pairing of Idris Elba & Inner City and their anthem "No More Looking Back" (feat Steffanie Christi'an) rounding up the A side in low-slung and groovy fashion. Over on the flip, it's all about Italian veteran producer Riva Starr of Snatch! Records fame, who serves up the electrifying gospel house vibe of 'Love Divine' featuring Phebe Edwards. Review: Defected's numeral EP series is up to a 13th edition but this one is in no way unlucky for anyone. It collects together some of the biggest and most widely heard tunes of 2022 across two sides of wax. First up is the summer banger 'Rise Up' from Harry Romero & Inaya Day which dropped in June and was never far from a big moment. The Deep In Jersey remix of 'Rise Up' is more deep and dubby and then on the reverse Spanish artist David Penn offers 'Push The Feeling' with vocals from Leon Stanford. House hero Mike Dunn then pairs off with LOA for a hip-hop-leaning sound.

Review: You can't fault Defected for being always there and always on point. It truly embodies house music spirit and has done for decades on many different fonts. 'Spotlight' leans on an r&b jam familiar to many and it comes here with some fresh remixes. The original is rolling, soulful house with lush production, US garage drum shuffles and great vocals. Sam Divine adds plenty of weight bass and makes it a more tribal tech cut then two Mousse T remixes offer first a big, raw and piano-laced version as well as a slamming disco mix for the peak time.

Of course there's no way a mere double pack could begin to cover the back catalogue the prolific producer has weaved his magic over, but there's no doubt the selections on offer are some of his finest. At Night (Shakedown Galactic Boogie) (6:50)
Review: Return to 2001: Swiss brothers Shakedown drop an iconic house anthem that debunked the standard XXL funk du jour with a much spacier, synth-based 80s boogie sound. Still relevant and heavily played, Defected have commissioned three on-point artists for the 2018 contemporisations: Peggy Gou gets her acid tweaks on, Tiger & Woods pitch down the vocal and dust off the Street Sounds electroid feel and Purple Disco Machine cooks up an unapologetic funked up house jam that wouldn't have gone amiss on Classic back in the day. For good measure Shakedown return with their own signature Galactic Boogie version that pumps with strong Moroder tendencies. Good night.

Review: Sophie Ellis Bextor got her self back in the headlines during lockdown having hosted a series of live streams from her own home. They reminded people of her happy go lucky and dance floor friendly sound, not least her epic naughties hit 'Groovejet' (If This Ain't Love).' Defected capitalise on this with a massive double pack of remixes from contemporaries like Purple Disco Machine and Riva Starr. The original sits pretty in the middle of them all and frankly still takes some beating but Harvey Sutherland does a fine job of updating it with some cool jazz-funk bass and chords.

Review: It's a case of old school meets new school on this fresh new slice of house from Defected. Representing the vets is the one and only Louie Vega, while in the contemporary corner are New York's finest, the Martinez Brothers. Marc E Bassy also pops up on vocals for this feel good deep house gem. His part sung, part rapped delivery comes over soul drenched beats and nice singing leads, which have long been a hallmark of the great Masters at Work man, Vega. Review: Vintage Culture is a uniquely skilled house artist, having scaled the heights of superstardom whale retaining a relatively unique sonic identity. How might one describe his sound? We would describe it in select terms: raw, packed with texture, blazing, and tinged with an uptempo flavour that recalls the slapdash and sample-filled approach of many French house artists. This new EP from Defected celebrates four of Vintage Culture's most recent productions, documenting a variety of approaches to an oppressive, energetic and all-round rabid house mode.

Heaven (Nightmares On Wax club dub) (7:32)
Review: As debuts go, the first outing from Ben Westbeech and KON as The Vision is mighty impressive. With the assistance of UK soul star Andreya Triana, they've conjured up a thrilling debut cut that sits somewhere between gospel, disco and sultry soulful house. The superbly warm and groovy original version - all bold piano riffs, jazzy horn solos, crunchy guitars, rolling drums and sublime lead vocals - is undoubtedly the standout, though the accompanying remixes are also rather good. Mousse T's boogie-flavoured house remix is a great alternative house mix with a deeper and more obviously electronic flavour, while the two Nightmares On Wax rubs are chunkier, sweatier and even warmer with plenty of D-Train style synth squiggles and ear-catching musical flourishes. In a word: ace.

Review: Last time out Andreya Triana and The Vision (AKA KON and Ben Westbeech) took us to "Heaven" and back. For their latest single they've asked us to gape in wonder at some suitably sizeable "Mountains". In its original "Extended Mix" form (side A) the track is soulful, slick and seductive, with Triana's superb vocals rising, mountain-like, above a musical panorama rich in dreamy chords, jazz-funk bass, gospel pianos and club-ready beats that sit somewhere between deep house and disco. Danny Krivit is the man at the controls for the flipside remix. He stretches out the track impressively, making a bit more of the spacey synths, guitars and bass while re-framing the track as a soaring slab of piano house brilliance.

The Dangerfeel Newbies - "What Am I Here For?" (original NDATL vocal - Danny Krivit edit) (8:45)
Review: Since the 1970s Danny Krivit has been a prolific re-editor. We're used to him cutting up classic cuts - think disco and soul, in particular - but he's never been afraid to turn his talents to contemporary cuts. That's what you get on this surprise Defected release. On the A-side he turns his attention to "Heaven", the killer gospel-inspired modern disco single from The Vision and Andreya Triana, turning in a version with plenty of drops, instrument solos and more emphasis on the righteous, life-affirming vocals. He's in a smoother mode on side B, extended and rearranging the rich and soulful dancefloor treat that is Kai Alce's Original NDATL vocal mix of The Dangerfeel Newbies' "What Am I Here For?" - a gem from 2016 that has previously been criminally overlooked.

It is, of course, with the experienced DJ/producer gleefully joining the dots between original rave-era fare and contemporary retro-futurist gems that pay tribute to piano house, early US garage, classic Italian house and Chicago jack. Both mixes bristle with ear-catching riffs, big builds and colossal drops, with highlights coming thick and fast. As a result, we'd argue that DJ Haus has delivered one of the best In The House mixes to date.

Review: Here's something to raise the spirits of househeads everywhere: a two-disc mix of vintage Strictly Rhythm material - mostly from the New York house and garage label's 1990s heyday - by Get Physical founder DJ T. More excitingly, the package also contains unmixed versions of the German veteran's selections, each of which he has re-edited. Happily, his selections are spot on, and for every well-known classic - Hardrive's "Deep Inside", Wink's "Higher State of Consciousness", Phuture's "Rise From Your Grave" etc - there are countless other deeper, even more essential selections (see KDope's "Watch This", Sneak's hustling "Keep On Groovin" and the nagging cyber-funk of Mood II Swing's "It's Gonna Work Out"). In a word: essential.

Review: There have been plenty of tributes to sadly departed house legend Frankie Knuckles, but this is the first true retrospective of his work. It's a fitting tribute, with Defected choosing to focus largely on his classic '80s and '90s work, sneaking in only a few later hits (see the Director's Cut anthem "I'll Take You There" and a storming remix of Hercules & Love Affair's "Blind"). As you'd expect, all the familiar staples are present - "The Whistle Song", "Tears", "Baby Wants To Ride" etc. - alongside lauded remixes (classic reworks of Loose Ends and Chaka Khan, in particular) and a smattering of previously unreleased gems (check the piano-laden revision of Pet Shop Boys' "Left To My Own Devices").

Review: Defected's House Masters series tribute to Frankie Knuckles is being released as two double LPs, but it could have easily been four or five, such is the quality of the tracks and remixes that the 'Godfather of House' produced during his lifetime. Naturally this second and final part is full to bursting with colourful, tactile and wonderfully saucer-eyed classics - many familiar, some slightly less so - which deserve a place in your collection. Picking highlights is naturally tough, but for proof of Knuckles' unassailable musical majesty and dancefloor magic it's hard to beat the Sound Factory mix of 'The Whistle Song', the low-tempo house bliss of his remix of Inner City's 'Whatcha Do With My Lovin', the Satoshi Tomiie/Robert Owens hook-up 'Tears' and his incredible revision of Electribe 101's 'Talking With Myself'.

Review: It's been a long time coming, but finally Defected's producer and remixer-focused House Masters series has turned its attention to the undisputed Godfather of House himself, the late, great Frankie Knuckles. This first part (of two) fittingly opens with the track that originally set out his melodious, warm, colourful and loved-up trademark sound, the Jamie Principle collaboration 'Your Love', before flitting between genuine anthems (legendary remixes of Loose Ends' 'Hangin' On a String' and 'Blind' by Hercules and Love Affair, the sleazy, acid house-era 'Baby Wants To Ride', the exceptional 'Hallucinogenic Mix' of Chaka Khan's 'Ain't Nobody') and arguably more overlooked gems (the garage-house wonders that are his remixes of Adeva and Sounds of Blackness).

Review: Given Masters At Work's longevity and the seemingly bottomless depth of their discography, it's perhaps unsurprising that Defected has decided to make the veteran New York duo the first recipients of a second House Masters compilation. As with the first volume, the four-disc set offers a mix of well-known anthems ("To Be In Love", "It's Alright, I Feel It", "Mind Fluid" etc), classic remixes (an early rework of Debbie Gibson, an on-point house remake of Loose Joints' disco smasher "Is It All Over My Face", long-forgotten rubs of George Benson and Femi Kuti), and deeper selections (dubs of Chic and Neneh Cherry). There's also a chance to enjoy again some of the duo's lesser-celebrated early 2000s singles, including their brilliant tribute to Fela Kuti, and the "Our Time Is Coming" hook-up with Roy Ayers). Immaculate stuff.

Review: It's taken Defected a while to get round to putting together a Masters at Work retrospective for their popular House Masters series. Given the New York duo's legendary status, this is something of a surprise. This CD edition does a good job in rounding up some of their highlights, touching on forgotten gems as well as well-known anthems ("The Nervous Track", the brilliant "The Ha Dance"). It's nice to revisit the MAW-produced 1994 cut "Voices in My Mind" (effectively a side project featuring regular vocalist India), and, in particular, the stomping, piano-laden soulful house flex of Kenny and Louie's classic Dub of Lood and Donell Rush's "Shout N Out".

Review: Given the upsurge in interest in Mood II Swing's distinctively tough take on 1990s US garage, it was probably only a matter of time before someone put together a proper career retrospective. Fittingly, it is re-born '90s New York house imprint Strictly Rhythm that does the honours. The three-disc, originals-and-remixes format is similar in style and tone to Defected's House Masters series, and the results are similarly enjoyable. What shines through most is the quality of John Ciafone and Lem Springsteen's grooves, which while rooted in the organ-heavy shuffle of US garage were often notably tougher and darker. While there is some repetition (vocal and dub versions of some tracks are included on different discs), there's no denying the quality of the material.

Review: Given his long association with Defected - and in particular Strictly Rhythm - it was probably only a matter of time before Yoruba Records chief Osunlade was asked to mix an instalment of the long-running In The House series. Those expecting Osunlade's usual African rhythms, organic soul and shuffling grooves are in for a treat. The first disc, in particular, scratches this itch, offering a string of world music-inspired treats from himself and like-minded producers Ame, Marcus Wogull and Atjazz. Disc two pushes thing up a notch, wandering into soulful garage flavours whilst retaining the loveable deepness to which Osunlade is most associated.

Review: It's 26 years since Roger Sanchez released his first production, the bleep-inspired deep house of "Dream World" by Ego Trip. A career retrospective, then, is long overdue. Strictly Roger Sanchez does a good job in this regard, gathering together classics, forgotten gems and big hits on three themed discs. The first focuses on remixes, including such gems as his heavyweight rework of early Corina Joseph's "Live Your Life With Me" (a fantastic early Basement Jaxx production), while disc two showcases original productions from the Kangol-wearing DJ. The third and final disc looks at "The Strictly Years", dusting down killer early tracks including Underground Solution's "Luv Dancin" and DV8's "Work It".

Review: Given Kevin Saunderson's status as one of electronic music's all-round legends, it was probably inevitable that he would, at some point, be asked to mix an installment in Defected's long-running In The House series. Since Saunderson isn't a regular on the mix CD circuit, this is something of a rare treat. For the most part, it's a highly enjoyable journey, with Saunderson slickly moving between deeper, melodic fare, tougher, drum-laden percussion workouts, jaunty Latin and Afro-house and, of course, tracky, funk-infused techno, all the while retaining a strong element of soul. There's also a smattering of Saunderson's own productions, including a piano-laden 2011 version of "Good Life".

Review: His powers to thrill and surprise may have waned in recent years, but Nottingham's Charles Webster remains one of British house music's genuine legends. In the two decades since his first single appeared in stores, Webster has provided deep house heads with too many highlights to mention, under a myriad of pseudonyms (Furry Phreaks, Presence, DJ Profile, and Love From San Francisco being the best-known). Using new re-edits, unreleased remixes and unheard exclusives, this edition of Defected's House Masters series charts his impressive career to date, mixing the familiar ("I Understand You", "Want Me (Like Water)", "Better Day"), with lesser-known fare (including, surprisingly, Webster's superb but overlooked remix of A Reminiscent Drive's "2 Sides to Every Story").
