Bumba (hand-stamped 10" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: FAVX 013. Rel: 04 Apr 23
Bumba (4:40)
Poverty (3:46)
Review: Foundation Audio team up two heavy hitters for this ode to heavy sound system music as a way of marking the label's 100th release. This limited edition hand-stamped 10" kicks off with the booming bass and snappy hits of 'Bumba' with its snaking leads and low end wub-wub recalling classic era dubstep. 'Poverty' then pairs some heavily treated vocals with glitchy, glassy sound effects, a rugged and weighty low end and plenty of futuristic and caustic textures. These are dread fuelled bombs designed to be played nice and loud.

Rattler (4:52)
El Guapo (with Drone) (4:14)
Esoteric (with En:vy) (4:35)
Juan40 (4:12)
Review: Following jams on Bowlcut and Monk earlier this year, Cesco returns to the 1985 mothership with this mighty fine mixed bag of 140/174 treats. 'Rattler' says it all. Curmudgeonly and grizzly, it sizzles out of the speakers with pure venom. Elsewhere on a D&B tip En:vy gets mucked in on tippy harmonics of 'Esoteric' while 'Pity' is all jazzy, slinky and full of tension. Meanwhile on the 140 flip 'El Guapo' is proper hammer jam with a most unruly bassline Q&A while 'Juan40' will have you speaking Spanish before you can say 'wheel up the bloodclart'. Rattle and roll!

Brand New Machine (double 12")

International
Machine Gun (feat Pusha T)
Gangsta Boogie VIP (feat Knytro)
Breathing (feat Bo Saris)
Review: Their third album, Brand New Machine sees Chase & Status reach a nirvana-like vein of form. Every single track is impeccable and these are four of the finest examples. "International" pays respect to hip-hop's golden age (notably Nas) and tips a massive nod at formative jungle by way of a Cutty Ranks vocal. "Machine Gun" rifles us back to the modern day with a US-slanted grime piece that stutters and spits with genuine venom. "Gangsta Boogie VIP", meanwhile, sees C&S at their deadliest. Opening with a slick hip-hop lick we're soon thrown deep into the D&B mosh pit with no sign of exit. "Breathing" completes this stunning double pack on a liquid note. Skippy, swift and soulful, it reminds us where the unstoppable duo have come from.

Review: If you're not an ardent follower of the more underground strains of US hip-hop then the (rather brilliant) name Clams Casino has probably floated far from your musical radar. The 23 year old New Jersey resident has been responsible for the arrangements that sit beneath the lyrical swagger of Soulja Boy and Lil B, and it was via these productions Tri Angle Records boss Robin Carolan became aware of the potential potency of the Clammy Clams steez stripped of lyrical swagger. It's been a wise move, as the hugely popular beat tape Clams Casino released prior to his debut on Tri Angle testifies. Furthermore, the five tracks that form Rainforest have a bewitching effect on your senses; this is the record we've gone back to repeatedly over the course of the week as there's such rich detail in the murky production. Ignore the hype attached to both this release and the label; it's totally worth indulging in Rainforest.

Serious Bidness
Hundred Mil
Moment Of Truth
Adventure Tune
Review: Clicks & Whistles are a duo (one a programmer, the other a classically trained whizz) from North Carolina and together they have carved a niche with a sound resulting from their idiosyncratic influences. Upon hearing tracks like "Serious Bidness", it's apparent that they have clearly absorbed a lot of local Southern hip-hop, while "Hundred Mil" goes further still: venturing into sinister Salem-style juke territory. Conversely, both "Moment Of Truth" and "Adventure Tune" are pure mid-80s synth-hop-pop workouts! A varied and unique release.

Think Your Gone
Review: Coki's solo outings are few and far between, with only a handful of productions attributed to his own moniker over the past six years, but what he lacks in output he more than makes up for in consistency. This new doublepack on his now legendary DMZ imprint is a case in point; "Tree Trunk" consists of the kind of jackhammer bass and tense synths that could only come from South London, whilst "Lower Octave" sees the sub frequencies getting a full workout across the spectrum, with the bass turning to bleeps as the track reaches its climax. On the second 12", "Celestial Dub" is a much less abrasive affair, instead taking its cues from classic dub, combining a number of delay soaked piano and reverb laden organ chords over its enveloping bassline, and "Think Your Gone" adds significant brain-melting oscillation to its subs to rank among Coki's deadliest productions.

Review: FYI: UKF whip up DIY, a triple threat with OGs Coki and Flowdan and rising new-gen 140 talent Leotrix on this special limited hand-stamped, white label style 12". 'DIY' comes in two versions... A classic timeless Old School swagger and a much rougher, grittier tear-up with the dubstep mix. Shift (feat JME)
Shift (instrumental)
Review: On his first release for Deep Medi Musik this year, Commodo taps up JME for a mean lyrical flow over the top of a typically monstrous production, making a perfect dubstep / grime crossover track in the process. JME has a blast pointing back to classic reference points from Kano and Wiley and many more in his conscious MC turn, while Commodo's beat prowls in the background with that exotic charm that has always marked out his style from the rest of the pack. There's a hooky chorus and plenty of grand stabs, and for those who just want the tune the instrumental is bundled in as well. The fact that the beat stands up on its own without any trouble says a lot about Commodo's studio prowess, which is no doubt why he continues to be a mainstay on Mala's label.

Review: Black Acre has always been a home-from-home for Sheffield artist Commodo. He's back on the label now with more of his inter-genre explorations. This time out he brings grime, bass and 90s punk guitar together into something utterly fresh. Think of Fugazi and Mudhoney as reference options and you will be in the right ballpark, but all with this producer's signature sonic structure and hefty bottom ends. These are 140 instrumentals with their own dark energy and they bring a truly different vibe to the dubstep template.

Review: Deep Medi Musik continues on its mission to find the darkest, deepest and heaviest dubstep out there with a new bowel-rumbling release from Compa. It opens with the lurching drums and insistent stabs of 'Mind Control', a spacious wobbler with impossibly weighty bass. 'Emergence' then gets a little busier with zippy leads pinging about the mix and frosty static adding texture to the low end wub. 'Stronghold' is another bleak futuristic vision where all humanlike has been replaced by AI and 'Armada Bleeps' brings glassy texture, edgy chords and glitching breaks.

Wing (feat Money Allah) (10:20)
Review: Elysia Crampton came through for the first time this year with a pair of EP's, one for the impressive Boomkat Editions and another for the fledgling Total Stasis. Her latest piece of work appears on bass wizard Falty DL's label, the ambiguously named Blueberry Records. Much like her previous outings, "American Drift" is a mixture of many moods and styles, a blend of slow, meditative vocals and starry electronic atmospherics. "Axacan", on the other hand, is backed by a mi-tempo percussive swagger and boasts the same level of melodic psychedelia, while "Petrichrist" heads down tribal roads with its organic drums and odd waves of flutes, and "Wing" takes things down to r&b levels....far-out r&b levels that is! Recommended.

Review: Monster 12" here from Traversable Wormhole aka Adam X, with remixes from a pair of techno heavyweights. Berghain man Dettmann turns "Closed Timelike Curve" into a frenetic, unrelenting assault on the senses. It feels like a love letter to the 90s Tresor scene, and noticeably different to the stripped back and industrial sound associated with the new school of Berlin techno. Flip over for a remix from the always impressive Van Hoesen, who turns "When 2D Meets 3D" into a stripped back groover with an insistent drum pattern and subtle synth melody. Superb 12", not to be missed!

Review: We've been saying for a hot minute that a dubstep reveal is due, if not already here - even though, as is the case with any revival, the purists will say the sound never went away. We would like to submit as supporting evidence this reissue of a stone cold classic split 12" from 2009 from serious dubstep heavyweights Loofah and Coki. It came on the pioneering Deep Mehdi Musik label and some 14 years on still has plenty of dark late night allure and killer low end wobble. Two definitive tracks that we can't wait to start hearing out again on loud systems.

Jam lays down a bouncy riddim full of character and cheeky trippy flurries while Capo gets down to business with a tale of a hectic schedule. Polonis - "Slice Roll 3" (3:58)
Sir Hiss - "Blood Diamond" (3:58)
Review: This debut release from the Dream Eater label is little less than a statement of intent. It features cuts from no less than six members of the extended crew crammed onto one action-packed 12". Proc Fiskal kicks things off with the thursting sub-bass, cut-up hip-hop yelps and full-throttle grime beats of "Come Here", before Charlux shows his melodious side on the jaunty goodness of "Riposte". There's some ghostly synths and aggressive grooves from Nights, a deep dive into sparse and heavy dubstep territory from Dr Hugo, and a touch of glacial, post-grime brilliance from Polonis. Best of all, though, is Sir Hiss's "Blood Diamond", which effortlessly underpins marimba style melodies with a punchy, post-dubstep beat.

Redders & Sam Binga & Hyroglifics - "Vintage" (feat MC DRS) (4:50)
Review: MC-focused EPs aren't particularly common in D&B. They're even less common on Critical. In fact this is the first. And it's a delight from the off as Redders teams up with mates old and new for a body of work that's more album than EP. "No Go" is all space-funk oddness with barely a bar in sight, "96 In One" is rapid fire storytelling over a dancehall version, "Dem Ones" is Redders' take on a dry-humping love song while "Sexy Or Sweet" sits somewhere between Toddla T and Barry White. Winding up "Aphasia" sees Redders and Sam flip Ruffhouse's dark tribal stamps into a carnival killer and "Vintage" sees the Bristol-based MC go toe-to-toe with the best MC in the game. One of a kind.

The Colonel & MC DRS - "Can I Get Some"
Cottam - "Hit The Wall (Frustration)"
Review: Last seen back in 2009 sporting Quantic & Nostalgia 77 jams across a dinky 7", the elusive Tru Thoughts Black Gold series returns with a third offering detailing what the label has up their sleeve in the coming months. Judging by the three tracks here, the South Coast imprint is getting ready to unleash some rowdiness not least the tantalising prospect of Sleeping' Giantz. Formed of three legends of UK music in Zed Bias, Fallacy and Rodney P, "Badungdeng" is tuff, sub heavy bruk anthem and bodes well for their forthcoming album. Alongside this, The Colonel teams up with veteran spitter MC DRS for the soundbwoy grime flex of "Can I Get Some". Intriguingly Preston's finest Cottam spreads his wares across the expanses of the B Side with the disjointed Martian alien futurism of "Hit The Wall (Frustration)". Those expecting slo mo deepness will be surprised at a track more akin to the music you'd find on a Mathematics release, and to our ears it's quite effing brilliant!

Review: Of late, dubstep has kind of fallen of the radar of those who skip from genre to genre in terms of new thrills, leaving it in the hands of a smattering of long-serving heavyweights. Since Caspa is undoubtedly one of those, it's little surprise to find him mixing this taster of what the sound has to offer in 2012. For those who don't keep up with it, Dubstep Sessions 2012 will be a bit of an eye-opener. There's much for confirmed bass heads to enjoy, from the spooky bump of The Others' "Bad Taste" and the dancefloor skank of Dirty Dog's "Selecta", to the bashy rave noises of Dismantle's "Computation" and all-conquering madness of Skrillex's "Scary Bolly Dub".

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from dubstep veteran Caspa. He operates at the more aggressive, in-your-face end of the dubstep spectrum, offering a no-nonsense approach to floor-filling grooves. Here, he presents his latest mix - a heavyweight sprint through speaker-worrying riddims, gargantuan basslines, bold riffs and wobbly trap, with occasional forays into calmer, melodic waters thrown in. Along the way, highlights are plentiful, from the big vocals and winding melodies of Emalkay's "The Line", the cyber-wobble of The Others' "Amazonia VIP" and his own bombastic "London Zoo" standing out.

Review: This reworked version of Cloaks' decidedly gritty 2009 debut album Versus Grain has been a long time coming. For those with a love of heavy industrial beats and head-warping rhythms, it may well have been worth the wait. Sitting somewhere between the outer reaches of experimental techno, scratchy post dubstep, warped IDM and classic industrial rhythms of Meat Beat Manifesto, Version Grain is a full-throttle assault on the senses. At times, it's surprisingly sparse and rhythmically hypnotic (see the Ancient Methods remix of "RFID"), at others creepy and agonisingly intense (Devilman's fractured dubstep version of "Against"). Throughout, it remains gloriously in-your-face.

Review: St Albans-based Daniel Richmond has quietly built a solid reputation as a purveyor of woozy, atmospheric dubstep via a series of quality full-lengths. In the past, he's been compared to Burial, though Richmond's music and rhythms lack the paranoid, panic-stricken intensity associated with dubstep's self-styled man of mystery. There are some similarities, though, not least a love of subtle melodies, quietly upbeat compositions and wrong speed vocal cut-ups. This third album is arguably Richmond's most confident and swaggering, a typically robust set that fixes floor-friendly rhythms to his usual dreamy soundscapes.
