Shake Off That Dream (reissue)
Cat: CHV 001. Rel: 03 Nov 21
Shake Off That Dream (3:37)
Try Something New (3:49)
Review: The Outta Sight label makes a noteworthy debut here with a fine first vinyl release. This reissued 7" gives you a great idea of what to expect froths label going forwards - timeless Northern Soul classics that were there are the birth of the scene and remain a vital part of it decades later. Eddie Billups has a buttery warm voice and a big soul sound. Firstly, 'Shake Off That Dream' is a free-flowing, feel-good sound with big strings and smooth grooves. On the flip, Eddie gets more vulnerable and tender with his effective and confessional 'Try Something New.' Two superb sounds.

Review: Ahead of their Ron Murphy retrospective album, Outta Sight drop this seven inch containing two rare Northern Soul delights from Doni Burdick that the legendary engineer recovered from anonymity and mastered some twenty years after being originally recorded.

Ordinary Joe (reissue)
Cat: SEV 006. Rel: 01 Dec 20
Terry Callier - "Ordinary Joe" (4:14)
Jerry Butler - "Ordinary Joe" (3:26)
Review: On the latest edition of their excellent Soul Essentials series, Outta Sight has decided to bring together two versions of 'Ordinary Joe', a seemingly perennial favourite written by the late, great Terry Callier. His celebrated 1972 recording - all bold, sing-along choruses, organ stabs, jangling piano and lolloping grooves - breezes its way across side A, while Jerry Butler's earlier version, laid to tape in 1970, sits on side B. His version is much more expansive and musically detailed than Callier's take, with superb production from Gamble & Huff and some brilliant orchestral arrangements courtesy of Donny Hathaway. Both versions are, or course, incredible.

Lonely For You Baby

Lonely For You Baby (45 version) (2:44)
Lonely For You Baby (alternate version) (2:40)
Review: The newly launched vinyl arm of Outta Sight gets off to a fantastic start this month with no fewer than three utterly curial 7"s all dropping. The label deals in golden era Norther Soul reissues and this Sam Diss offering certainly falls within that remit. These vintage soul tunes were first out out in 1968 and come with carefree, loved up moods thanks to great use of acoustic drums and alto sax leads. The vocals are of course what really pack in the emotion as they rise and fall to take you on a proper rollercoaster.

Purple Haze

Johnny Jones & The Casuals - "Purple Haze" (4:20)
Gene Chandler - "There Was A Time" (4:44)
Review: The King Casuals and were founded in 1962 by the late great Jimi Hendrix and after the guitarist's death, he was in the late sixties replaced by Johnny Jones. He leads them in stomping and high energy fashion and here on the a-side is his interpretation of the Hendrix classic 'Purple Haze.' It's got all the things you need to get steamy on the dance floor and it always used to shake the floor at Wigan Casino. Gene Chandler is a bonafide Northern Soul legend who is well known to fans of the genre and his 'There Was a Time' is a real raw gem on the flip.

Can't Live Without You
Cat: CHV 003. Rel: 03 Nov 21
Connie Laverne - "Can't Live Without You" (2:43)
Anderson Brothers - "I Can See Him Loving You" (2:48)
Review: Outta Sight's third 7" is another vital pair of hugely desirable, collectible, and rare Northern Soul singles. They are both taken from the new Club Classics album of remastered floor filler anthems and are well deriving of their own slice of wax. These singles from Connie Laverne and The Anderson Brother were put out first in 1974/95 shortly before the GSF label folded. They were DJ-only promos which accounts for their rareness and come with plenty of rumours attached. Musically they are gems that were played from the birth of the scene at Manchester's Twisted Wheel to it's heyday at Wigan Casino.

Bad Girl
Cat: OSV 188. Rel: 08 Apr 19
Bad Girl (part 1) (2:28)
Bad Girl (part 2) (2:20)
Review: One of the few records Atlanta legend Lee Moses ever pressed, the highly sought after "Bad Girl" enjoys its first official reissue since 1967. So good it stretches over two sides, Moses' powerful bluesy delivery hits hard while the band keep a tight grip of his emotions from start to finish. Gutsy, grainy and still just as powerful as it was 52 years ago; there's a reason the original has consistently fetched triple figures among collectors for all this time.

Compared To What

Mr Floods Party - "Compared To What" (3:48)
Fork In The Road - "Can't Turn Around Now" (2:27)
Review: The latest 7" missive from the Outta Sight camp features two more impossible-to-find rarities. On the A-side you'll find a storming chunk of horn-heavy, Hammond-rich funk from obscure US psychedelic band Mr Floods Party. Originally released on GM Records in 1971, the cut has long been an in-demand amongst Northern Soul collectors thanks to its stomping beat and impassioned vocals. Speaking of Northern Soul favourites, flip to the B-side for the greatest moment from short-lived Detroit soul group Fork In The Road. Originally released in 1970, "Can't Turn Around Now" is a thrillingly energetic workout full of heavy instrumentation, surging vocals and an even heavier backbeat.

Send Him Back
Cat: OSV 173. Rel: 17 Apr 18
The Pointer Sisters - "Send Him Back" (2:35)
The Drifters - "You Got To Pay Your Dues" (2:33)
Review: Chalalala move on. Outta Sight continue their two sides / two legends Atlantic 45 series with this beautiful celebration of The Pointer Sisters and The Drifters. Neither act require an introduction. The famous Oakland all-girl troupe take the lead with "Send Him Back", their sophomore single (that regularly fetches upwards of L100 a copy) it's a bubblegum soul frenzy with all the energy you'd expect from their breakthrough years. The Drifters carries a similar sense of focus and energy with vibrant backing vocals and a sunny side soul touch that will have you bouncing from here to next winter.

Standing In The Need Of Love (2:00)
Review: Back in 2012, Outta Sight dipped into the Cameo-Parkway catalogue in order to offer a first ever "45" pressing of Dee Dee Sharp's 1963 version of 'Comin' Home Baby', which was originally featured on the Philadelphian vocalist's sixth solo album, All The Hits (Volume 2). Eight years on the label has decided to issue a new, limited-edition pressing on vibrant red vinyl. Her version of the Mel Torme favourite is superb and arguably even better than the more famous and celebrated original recording. It comes backed with Sharp's deliciously stomping, uplifting 1965 take on Barrett Strong song 'Standing in the Need of Love', a version that should appeal to Northern Soul DJs and dancers across the UK.

Spring Rain (stereo)
Cat: OSV 118. Rel: 29 Jul 14
Silvetti - "Spring Rain"
Bataan - "The Bottle"
Review: This latest release from the Outta Sight label places two true Latin heavyweights on one super special 7". Proceedings commence with the life affirming Balearic piano slapper "Spring Rain" by the Grammy Award winning Argentinean composer Juan Silvetti, which was originally released back in 1977. The lolloping bassline and naked keys make for a wonderful introduction to the track and the moment it opens up into the full vocal harmonic beauty is musical heaven. Meanwhile on the flip we hit one of the best cover versions the Latin quarter has ever given us in a vibrant interpretation of Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle", courtesy of Salsoul co-founder Bataan Nitoliano. Stunning.

I'll Be Loving You
Cat: OSV 172. Rel: 17 Apr 18
Soul Brothers Six - "I'll Be Loving You" (2:18)
Willie Tee - "Walkin' Up A One Way Street" (2:44)
Review: Outta Sight's latest monthly rare soul missive contains hard-to-find and overlooked classics from "hard-hitting" New Jersey vocal group Soul Brothers Six and New Orleans Rhythm and Blues man Willie Tee. It's the former's wonderfully sweet and loose "I'll Be Loving You" (first released in 1966, fact fans) that takes pride of place on the A-side, serving up a lightly sauteed soul take on the rhythm and blues template. Willie Tee's 1967 jam "Walking Up A One Way Street", a summery affair blessed with a superb horn section, leisurely groove and brilliant lead vocal from the man himself, can be found on the B-side.

I'm Sure
Look Around
Review: The third in the series of collectable vinyl 7 inch singles from Outta Sight. ''I'm Sure'' is an ultra-rarity from Detroit by the little known group Two Plus Two. The exact line-up is a mystery but known members were Wilbur Jackson and Cyril Clark. Jackson was a high-school buddy of Steve Mancha and together they signed to Harvey Fuquas' HPC label where they recorded as Two Friends. Clark was a writer and had already penned sides for the Four Hollidays

Looking Up To You (reissue)

Looking Up To You (3:58)
(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love (3:58)
Review: With roots as a backing singer for Stevie Wonder, Wycoff went on to become a soul ambassador throughout the early 80s. This 1982 reissue is one of the best examples of his silky, heartfelt delivery... "Looking Up To You" is a dynamic love song where traces of big 70s production build and build throughout. "(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love", meanwhile, was only ever released as a B-side. Its 80s production counter the dramatics of the A-side with cool synthetic perfection. Reissues don't get much broader in production or sweeter in sound than this.
