Borombon
Cat: MSR 035. Rel: 15 Dec 22
Borombon (2:54)
Con La Mano En La Biblia (2:50)
Review: Matasuna Records take us on a trip back to late 60s Panama, offering up two supremely rare tracks which, on their original pressings, would be a costly investment if you were lucky enough to find them. The A-side belongs to Camilo Azuquita and his joyous 'Borombon', a track bristling with exuberant brass and striking piano. On the B-side, Panama Brass lay down 'Con La Mano En La Biblia', a lively affair led by organist Cristobal Munoz Jr and featuring some of the best musicians in Panama at the time.

Cuban Shuffle (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: ECR 009. Rel: 05 Mar 25
Cuban Shuffle (Keep It Going mix) (3:36)
Pablo's Theme (3:55)
Review: Cheeba's Latin brothers are back with yet another Havanan shuffle, extensively vacationing in Cuba to soak in very best of the nation's ripest stylistic amassments. Taking cues from cut and paste funk to Latin boogaloo, 'Cuban Shuffle' and 'Pablo's Theme' urge us formerly to "keep it going, now" before latterly dropping us into a fuzz-scat vat of hazy brass and stomping, found percussion. Most notably, the A-side's vinyl scratches sate a pruritic itch, and a careful dosage of reverb marks out a roomy but expansive atmosphere, one difficult to recreate lest you actually were there in 1970s Cuba.

Set Your Soul Free (3:36)
Review: Echo Chamber Recordings celebrates its first anniversary this month with a new release in the Boogaloo Lessons Series. This latest instalment comes in special hand-numbered orange vinyl 7" limited to 150 copies and features Cheeba's Latin Bros, who deliver exceptional boogaloo tracks as per usual. The A-side, 'One Step Beyond,' boasts infectious rhythms, powerful drum beats and dynamic fills. On the B-side, 'Set Your Soul Free' combines the energetic boogaloo vibe with a touch of soulful tenderness, featuring vibrant percussion and captivating, offbeat chords. This release promises to keep the dance floor moving and showcases the rich, rhythmic textures of the boogaloo sound.

What You Gotta Say Hey Hey! (Boogaloo Lessons #1) (3:58)
I Wanna Get High (Boogaloo Lessons #2) (3:17)
Review: New limited edition 7-inch magic from Cheeba's Latin Bros, a new Latin - dare we say electric - boogaloo project by Si Cheeba, a veteran of the jazz and groove sessions popular in Manchester in the early 90s. The 7" is the first in a series of boogaloo lessons, which are cut-and-paste beats-and-samples tracks inspired by the enduring legacy of Latin soul - channelling its structure, pace and spirit, but lending it a medley-style electronic sample-based core. The A-side is based on many a rawly cut-up shout and sawn-off trumpet sample, while the comparatively muted B-side, 'I Wanna Get High', schools us on the myriad potential of furtive beats and rhythms.

What You Gotta Say Hey Hey (Boogaloo Lessons #1 ) (3:58)
I Wanna Get High (Boogaloo Lessons #2) (3:17)
Review: Si Cheeba is a veteran of Manchester's jazz dance and broken beat scene and on this new project he's going in hard on Latin grooves and giving them a serious cut and paste flair. This is the kind of record which should be kept in your back pocket for festival season, but it's got more than enough heat to light up a winter's night too. There's a little of big beat's sass in the madcap collage antics on both sides of this boogaloo-baiting bomb, with 'I Wanna Get High' taking the cake for holding down the groove for maximum satisfaction on the floor.

Tighren Up & Take It Over Boogaloo (Lessons #3) (3:49)
(Hey Girl) Try It, You'll Like It Boogaloo (Lessons #4) (3:23)
Review: Si Cheeba tops up his nascent Cheeba's Latin Bros edits venture with a new addition to the Echo Chamber label. Following up 'What You Gotta Say - Hey Hey!' released earlier this year, now appears two tutorials for you, on how exactly to handle any forthcoming electric boogaloo, before you blow a fuse... as ever continuing his mission to join the dots between funky and soulful sounds past and present, Cheeba delivers two fresh, impossible-to-source samply instrumental edits straight to the dome - the first a handclapping, big-breaksy dance pedagogy (it's urgent upstarts like you learn), and the B laying down a more seductive medley ("try it...") replete with a djembe solo.

Review: Si Cheeba expands his emerging Cheeba's Latin Bros edits project with a reissue of the last release on the Echo Chamber label. Following the success of 'What You Gotta Say - Hey Hey!' last year, he presents two instructional tracks to prepare you for any upcoming electric boogaloo. Continuing his mission to bridge the gap between funky and soulful sounds, Cheeba offers two fresh, sample-heavy instrumental edits. The first is a lively dance tutorial with handclaps and bold breaks, while the B-side features a more alluring mix with a djembe solo, inviting listeners to try it out. These tracks are essential for any funk enthusiast's collection.

New York Streets (part 1) (4:03)
New York Streets (part 2) (4:22)
Review: Echi Chamber is reissuing the records is served up late last year because they were all so excellent they sold out. This one is from Cheeba's Latin Bros, a new Latin and boogaloo project from Si Cheeba who is a long-time vet' of the jazz and groove scene that was so big back in the 1990s in Manchester. Limited to just 300 copies, it features one tune spread across two sides of vinyl. 'New York Streets (part 1)' is a raw percussive hustle with big horns and impassioned funk vocals that never let up. Part two is a continuation of that same vibe with just as much raw, direct and percussive goodness to get lost in.

Set Your Soul Free (3:43)
Review: This month, Echo Chamber Recordings turns one year old and makes the occasion by offering dup another instalment in the popular Boogaloo Lessons Series. This one comes from Cheeba's Latin Bros who serve up boogaloo brilliance starting with 'One Step Beyond' which has some ass-shaking rhythms and plenty of big drum sounds, rolling fills and natty chords. On the flip, 'Set Your Soul Free' has a big boogaloo vibe still but also more tender soul vibes in amongst all the vibrant percussive shuffling and unbalanced chords.

The Great Akerman (instrumental) (2:50)
Review: Fingier Records is a new Acid Jazz sub-label that is back with a brand new 7" from The Kevin Fingier Collective. It's a real dance floor heater that is perfectly aged and authentic as it mixes up Northern Soul and r&b with driving guitar rhythms and steamy piano chords. The horns are killer but the vocal is the icing on the cake. On the flip things get Latin flavoured with the bossa-tinged mod jazz of 'The Great Akerman' which is defined by lush flute and organ vamps. This is a great taster of the full length to come from The Kevin Fingier Collective.

Los Africanos - "It's Your Thing" (3:44)
Machito - "Knock On Wood" (2:18)
Review: Wanna hear the Isley Brothers classic "It's Your Thing" given a Latin shakedown? Mr Bongos have got you covered on the latest 7" in their splendid Latin 45s series! Originally issued back in 1974 on TR Records, this Los Africanos cover is a rum heavy Nu Yorican funk-soul instrumental featuring screaming Hammond organ and FX. It's very expensive in original form now, so shout outs to Mr Bongos for pressing it up here along with an equally good 1968 cover of instrumental, boogaloo version of Eddie Floyd's all-time classic "Knock On Wood" from Machito & His Afro-Cubans.

Nestor Alvarez - "La Gordita Americana" (3:09)
Nestor Alvarez - "Ixo's Taxi" (2:36)
Review: Latin Fever Vol. 3 offers a vibrant collection of tracks from Luchito & Nestor, as well as solo efforts by Nestor Alvarez (a.k.a. Neil Anderson). Luchito & Nestor's rendition of The Olympics' 'Good Lovin' kicks things off with a blistering Latin boogaloo twist, featuring infectious rhythms and lively brass. The instrumental Part 2 replaces lead vocals with a dynamic flute topline, adding a fresh layer to the classic hit. On the flip side, Nestor Alvarez's 'La Gordita Americana' is an uptempo boogaloo groover led by horns and piano, delivering an energetic and danceable vibe. The collection concludes with 'Ixo's Taxi,' a skeletal xylophone-led funk track that brings a unique, nostalgic charm. Each track on this release has a rich blend of Latin rhythms and boogaloo energy, making this an exciting 7" to hit the dancefloor to.

Luchito - "Dap Walk" (3:56)
Nestor Alvarez - "El Barrio" (4:06)
Review: Original Gravity, Luchito Rodriguez and Nestor Alvarez return with yet two more Latin groove versions of funk and soul classics, emulating two sounds not yet brought together enough. 'Dap Walk' is a shot-by-shot cover of the song of the same name by Ernie And The Top Notes - a slick and slippery interpretation that translates the original AAVE of the song's intro into Spanish. 'El Barrio', meanwhile, opts for 70s crime thriller vibes, instrumentally verging on expressionism via djembe, brass sections and vibraslaps.

El Diablo (2:51)
Review: Discos Quilombo's next 45 is a reissue of 'El Amor Es Un Bicho' (you can work out our own translation) by Los Martinicos, and it's a scorching hot and rare gem from 1969, originally recorded by Henry Nelson in Spain. 'El Amor Es Un Bicho' is all big energy and playful vocalisations, South American rhythms and bold horns, the moody 'El Diablo' has a darker bassline and more menacing energy but is packed with late 60s Latin flair. Both of these are wonderfully infectious South American soul tracks that will not be around for long, so make sure you snag them fast.

Michi Sarmiento Y Sus Combo Bravo - "Cumbia Raja" (3:05)
Review: Rockafort looks to Climaco Y Su Orcquesta Sarmiento and Michi Sarmiento Y Su Combo Bravo for this newly assembled 7". They have been dug out deep in the vaults of the influential Colombian label Discos Fuentes and make for some fiery and tropical dance floor heat. They are vintage bangers that fuse cumbia with hints of the Mexican 'snider' sound. Both are laden with percussion, big horn energy and slinky, slowly seductive grooves. Finding originals of these is prohibitively expensive so cop this crucial double header while you can.

Son Del Barrio (2:41)
Review: 'Piropo/Son Del Barrio' marks Tony & The Kings' debut single on Tiki Tumbao Records, one of just a few Latin, funk and boogaloo record labels operative today in Miami, Florida. 'Piropo' is a playful Latin soul and boogaloo song, which hears Tony emphasise his love for his girlfriend. The B, 'Son Del Barrio', is a Latin psych-funk keeper, tying up loose ends with its driving horns and relatively steady beat. Both deliver stop-starting pizzazz and well-kept funk, serving as a reminder that listeners need always check both sides of the record.

Now it gets remixes on this fresh 45rpm from Tiki Tumboa. Soul is mixed with boogaloo on the A-side 'Song Del Barrio' (Will Buck remix) with funky horns and nice broken beats. This low-key cult classic has become hard to find at an affordable price and is a real favourite with those who know. It is three superb sweet minutes of busy and percussive funk rawness with shuffling samba undertones. The guttural vocals are impossible to genre and the jazzy keys are the icing on a fruity cake.

The modern brass master pulls out all his usual tricks as he blends classic soul and boogaloo cuts into tunes ready to blow up your spot. 'Breaking Dog' is first and brings hefty breaks right off the bat along with sing along vocals and busy, tumbling toms. Review: This latest addition to the Legofunk series is sure to precipitate somatic reactions, whether floorbound crowds like it or not. On the A, Voodoocuts pins down a massive Latin / Afro-funk boogaloo edit for 'Ray's Delight', topped off by trilling trumpets and palm-outstretched piano chords. On the B, Tommy Manero gets samplier with it, collapsing the spatial-temporal plane between breakdance and salsa for 'B-Boy Chunga'.

Review: Ray Barretto's career as a Nuyorican conguero and bandleader brought together jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and R&B into a groundbreaking fusion. His mastery shines through in the energetic ensemble performance, featuring trumpeters Roberto Rodriguez and Rene Lopez, bassist Bobby "Big Daddy" Rodriguez, and vocalists Pete Bonet and Adalberto Santiago. The opening track drives with a funky bassline, while the shifting rhythms of 'Sola Te Dejare' spotlight Barretto's mastery of mambo and guaracha. Review: Previously unreleased, Joe Bataan (real name Bataan Nitollano) recorded the bulk of the material making up Drug Story in 1972. This new, highly limited box set hears seven revered, rarely-heard gems of Latin jazz, deep soul, raucous boogaloo, and heavy salsa by the legend, most of which were largely salvaged from his very own self-run Ghetto Records vaults. Drug Story was inspired by true events, and hears Bataan croon graciously over themes of destitution, lost family members and friends, and addiction. One of three definitive reissues of Bataan's greatest works, licensed from Bataan himself, with his oversight and input into a 15 page oversized book by Pablo Yglesia,s that details Bataan's larger-than-imagination life and his little Latin label that could.
