Tattletale (part 2)
Review: The saying goes that no one likes a tattle tale, but any self respecting funk collector would be hard pressed to give up on the chance of owning this latest dinker of the same name from the esteemed Antibalas collective. Composed by crew member Victor Axelrod, "Tattletale" has been a long term fixture of live sets by Antibalas and it's great to see them finally commit it to seven inches of wax. Laid down during the recording sessions for their last Daptone long player, its spread across two parts on this seven and is a sublime slab of Ethiopian funk that sees Antibalas doffing their collective cap to '70s pioneers Mulatu Astatqe, Wallias Band and Mahmoud Ahmed.

Change For The World (3:32)
Revelations (3:31)
Review: The self-professed 'Screaming Eagle of Soul' Charles Bradley continues his twilight storm into the affections of modern funk and soul fans with a prime seven inch taste of his upcoming album Changes. Bradley's latter day rise in cahoots with the inestimable Daptone has been a heart-warming story and he sounds in great fettle on this 45. Lead track "Change For The World" finds Bradley delivering an upbeat and brassy call to arms, detailing the current turmoil and offering a simple yet powerful prescription, "we've got to change our love, we've got to change for the world." Fans of the arrangement will be happy to see it appears in instrumental form in the shape of flipside track "Revelations."

Review: The recent passing of impassioned soul singer Charles Bradley, who found success late in life, adds extra poignancy to this superb full-length. It was recorded last year with Staten Island four-piece the Bullets and contains some of Bradley's finest work. He was a brilliant vocalist whose heavyweight delivery was compared favourably with James Brown. At times on Now That I'm Gone - a prescient title, which was decided upon months before his death - he out-does the Godfather of Soul, while the Bullets are every bit as heavy, funky and fresh as the J.B's. The result is a brilliant album full of floor-filling funk gems that naturally benefits greatly from Bosco Mann's famously fuzzy, '60s-sounding production.

Review: Released ahead of their fourth album of the same name, "Burnt Offering" showcases the Staten Island afro-soul 10 piece fusionists at their very best. Fuzzy, tight and loaded with surprises, both cuts on this limited hand-stamped 7" embrace the bands many influences - from Heliocentrics to Black Sabbath via Santana - and deliver them in a dynamic, heady way only the Budos Band can. We can't wait for the new album...

Review: A highly limited collectors' re-press of the oddball German funk act who had more monikers than they did releases. Originally released in 1993, this is one of the band's earliest cuts, but their dusty deliver and raw Hammond smashing action give the sweet sensation of the late 60s. "Augusta Georgia" is a frenetic ode to the Brown style of funk while "South Carolina" is powered by a more poignant blues motif. Get it while it's hot!

Count Your Blessings (4:55)
Review: Well, you can certainly rely on the excellent Daptone label to deliver the finest in blues and soul music, which is exactly what's up with this glorious 7" from The Como Mamas. Hailing from Como, Mississippi, these three ladies know a thing or two about gospel music, especially about how to make it as funky as humanly possible. "Move Upstairs" steps back and forth with the unmistakable Southern flair, all joyous and full of good will, while the B-side, "Count Your Blessings", goes down a moodier, more soulful path that we instantly associate to the deep South and its iconic influence on black music. Wonderful stuff.

Review: Soul and funk heads won't want to miss this very special seven-inch from the Daptone Records crew, and not just because it's the label's 100th "45". The A-side features an all-star '60s soul cover of the Frightnrs rock-steady cut featuring vocal contributions from Saun and Starr, James Hunter, Lee Fields, Naomi Shelton, Duke Amayo, the Frightnrs and two legends who are no longer with us: Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones. It's a one-off that won't be repeated for obvious reasons, but more importantly it's very, very good. Over on the flip main man Bosco Mann takes charge, conducting and producing "two opposing armies" of woodwind and horn players from the label's expansive musical roster. As you'd expect, it's something of an epic.

Review: The Frightnrs wrench us from our comfort zones with this new 45, demonstrating the best of what NY funk has to offer, thanks to their new song 'Always'. The title track of their forthcoming album, they truly frighten with this one, eschewing the need for vowels in the process. Upping the stakes from former album cuts like 'All My Tears', this one is much heavier, and is exemplary of the recording techniques used by producer Dan Klein; that of reusing and remixing samples recorded years prior.

Star Bright
Review: A very special 7" from Daptone here... The Impressions bustled their way out of Chicago in the early 60s and amassed a huge back catalogue throughout the late 60s and 70s with an album a year for almost 15 years before hibernating in the mid 80s. Thanks to Daptone's Binky Griptite, the band has reformed with most of their original members. Their first recording in over 30 years, both sides are as warm, soulful and, most importantly, authentic as you can get. The Mayfield-written "Rhythm" hums with harmonies and builds in momentum like an Otis joint. "Star Bright" has more a lullaby texture to it thanks to dreamy flutes in the background and a heavy emphasis on the falsettos.

Review: The superbly classy Daptone label comes on strong with another perfect formed 7" of retro soul. This time, the label's in house crew Menahan Street Band provide their famously authentic grooves, with big horns, rolling licks and drawn out leads on 'How Did I Get Here?' which on the a-side has vocals from LaRose Jackson. Soaring high and filled with rich soul, it's another timeless tune. On the flip is the instrumental. It's a story telling tune with some cosmic synth work and nice old school tambourines for an old/new fusion that gets you movin'.

What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes? (4:40)
This Land Is Your Land (4:28)
Review: Daptone recently released a killer collection of archival cover versions by in-house band the Dap-Kings and their sadly departed lead singer Sharon Jones. One of the headline attractions on that set, the band's righteous, call-to-arms soul version of Woody Guthrie's folk anthem 'This Land Is Our Land', is also featured on this must-have reissue of a "45" that first dropped in 2004. It's superb, but even better is A-side 'What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?', a floor-friendly conscious soul/funk crossover written and recorded at the height of the second Gulf War with Iraq. As usual, Jones' impeccable lead vocal is supported brilliantly by the band's fiery instrumentation and Bosco Mann's fuzzy, sixties-style production.

Review: Remarkably, 16 years have passed since Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings first released 'How Long Do I Have To Wait', one of the revivalist soul and funk band's sweetest and most heartfelt songs. Written and produced by Dap-Kings main man Bosco Mann, the song features one of Jones' most evocative and impassioned lead vocals, as well as a pleasingly laidback, loose-limbed groove, jazzy guitars and pitch-perfect horn blasts. As it did back in 2004, this reissue pairs the peerless vocal version with Mann's typically fuzzy, lovingly crafted instrumental take. If you missed out first time round, make sure you grab a copy.

Review: Daptone drops a new single from their premier funk act Sharon Jones & The Dapkings, with two tracks lifted from their latest album I Learned The Hard Way. Sharon's catchy melodic vocal on ''Better Things'' is assisted by rhythmic hand claps, cascading piano lines, brass stabs and backing vocals from The Dapkings. Everybody Knows
Review: Let it be said that Shelton has one of the most distinctive voices in soul right now... The perfect amount of grit and full command, she comes at you like a female James Brown and is complemented perfectly by her golden toned backing crew The Gospel Queens. "Sinner" is laid down over a tight Brother Cliff Driver groove that's rich in groove and soft enough in dynamics to allow the band's vocals to really surge through the mix. "Everybody Knows", meanwhile, is a truly unique fusion of country, rhumba and blues where crisp guitars pluck a sturdy rhythm with Caribbean sentiment while Naomi outlays an emphatic narrative. Sinfully good.

If This World Were Mine
Review: 2001. Record collector, DJ and New York soul music historian David Griffiths stumbles across a now rare Bob & Gene 45 whose label hints at an "upcoming album - If This World Were Mine". Curious, Griffiths places one call after another. Finally, an elderly William Nunn happens to pick up the phone. An eventual meeting ensues and, stunned, Griffiths finds himself entrusted with boxes of disintegrating Mo Do reel-to-reel tapes. "It was crazy on so many levels," Griffiths states. "You had these intensely emotional songs, mixed with this lo-fi quality, that in a way represented so much great music from so many cities that were never really heard by anyone." Deciding these tapes needed to be heard, Griffiths (with the Nunn family's blessing) brings them to Brooklyn contemporary soul/funk powerhouse Daptone Records. 36 years after its intended release, we present you the tender and remastered Bob & Gene's "If This World Were Mine".

Review: Look into Charles's history and you'll find he's been a victim of much more than love over the years. Now in his mid 60s, his recording career only really began in earnest 10 years ago. Criminal, really... But the best talent always gets recognised eventually, and Daptone are doing him some serious fast-track justice. Highlights include the country-inspired strumming and harmonies on the album title track, the belting horn-swing of "You Put The Flame On It", the sadder trumpet, alto sax and Hammon cannon melody on "Dusty Blues" and the blend of slamming northern soul style drums and head-bending psychedelia of "Confusion". Don't be a victim: feel the love today.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Minor dent and creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Florida's Charles Bradley is often referred to as "the screaming eagle of soul", a tag that we absolutely and wholeheartedly agree with, particularly on this latest EP for Daptone. Although Bradley was born in 1948 and has been making music for donkey's years, the artist came to prominence in the early 2000s, and has been on fire ever since. For starters, it's near impossible to find someone making this sort of soul music in 2016, and love ballads as powerful as "Good To Be Back Home", "Nobody But You", and pretty much every track on here, are not easy to come by. Secondly, we haven't heard an artist as passionate about his country since "God Bless America", a beautiful reminder that the world isn't all that bad, and there are plenty of positive and uncorrupted minds still out there today in the music scene. An unmissable album, for anyone.

Still tighter than a squid's spy hole, still oozing international instrumental allure that will resonate with fans as wide as Fela Kuti and Babe Ruth, still awesome! Each track is an emphatic narrative told with real drama. Review: 15 years have passed since self-styled "doom rock Afro-soul big band" the Budos Band released their debut album on Daptone. They've returned to Bosco Mann's imprint on multiple occasions since, with each successive album moving a little further away from the Ethio-funk-inspired sound of their early recordings, towards a style that draws just as much influence from psychedelic rock. Long in the Tooth, their sixth set, sees them doff a cap to their Afro-fired roots whilst continuing to explore the more hallucinatory, horror-fixated end of the psychedelic funk spectrum. The results are uniformly impressive, with our picks including 'Sixth Hammer', 'Haunted Sea', 'Gun Metal Grey' and reverb-drenched closing cut 'Renegade', which sounds like Carlos Santana having a bad acid trip.

Review: Brooklyn's Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings were already underground legends by 2005, but this was the release that blew the doors wide open. Reissued here in a 20th anniversary remaster with full instrumental versions, it captures the group in peak form: tight, defiant and dripping with groove. From the snarling funk of 'My Man is a Mean Man' to the gospel-inflected ache of 'Stranded' and the rolling swagger of 'You're Gonna Get It', every track is a showcase for Jones' irrepressible power. 'How Long Do I Have to Wait For You?' and 'This Land is Your Land' still hit like soul standards, while 'Fish in My Dish' and 'Your Thing is a Drag' lean into grit and grind. The instrumentals only deepen the appreciation: pure rhythm section muscle. Recorded in Bushwick's now-legendary House of Soul, it's the record that built the Daptone soundiand lit the fuse for a soul revival that still resonates today.

Review: With popular music increasingly obsessed with classic soul and funk (see Cee-Lo Green, Mayer Hawthorne etc), original revivalists Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings seem more relevant than ever. Of course, they were doing it long before major labels spotted the crossover potential of such breezy, authentically produced nostalgia, as this UK-only compilation proves. Rather than being a straight 'best of', it showcases a selection of hard-to-find tracks that previously made an appearance on limited edition 7" singles, compilations and soundtracks. As you'd expect, there are some real belters, from the politically motivated strut of "Why Don't We All Stop Paying Taxes" to the sweet, Christmas-themed "Aint No Chimneys In The Projects".

Review: Female vocalist Sharon Jones continues to fly the flag for raw femme funk with her fifth album for US label Daptone, ably assisted by the labels in-house band - The Dap Kings. The new record is a collection of rare tracks and B-Sides going back as far as 2002. Review: Big repress alert! This is the much-loved debut album from the Menahan Street Band, which is a talented collaboration of musicians including the great Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, El Michels Affair, Antibalas and the Budos Band. Led by producer Thomas Brenneck (who has worked before with Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Budos Band and also Amy Winehouse), the record was recorded in the bedroom of his Menahan Street apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It is a soulful, instrumental exploration that showcases the immense talent of the group and draws on all of their diverse influences to create a unique and captivating sound that pushes the boundaries of instrumental music into sumptuous and soulful worlds.

Review: Given their pivotal role in the rebirth of modern funk, it's fitting that Daptone are releasing this Poets of Rhythm retrospective. When they formed in 1993, the German band's blend of heavyweight '60s and '70s soul and funk was genuinely fresh, and pre-dated the "new funk" revival by almost 10 years. Listening back now, it's surprising how great their material still sounds; reverential to the original sounds of the '70s they love so dearly, but with clear nods to hip-hop, jazz, and even West African funk. For confirmed fans, there's also a special treat: a superbly intoxicating slow jam called "Path of Life". Simply essential.

Review: German funk act of legendary proportions, The Poets Of Rhythm arrived at time when the genre was a million miles away from the agenda. Digging deep into the roots with consummate dexterity, at first no one even believed they came from Europe. Morphing and mutating with myriad aliases along the way, the four-piece found themselves on labels as disparate as Gomma, Ninja Tune and Soulcity during their ten year tenure. And this is a collection of their very best moments. Spanning vibes from the screaming sax on the party jam "More Mess On My Thing" to the mournful, far-away flute soliloquy of "Choking On A Piece Of Meat" via the more frenetic bass and organ reflections on "The Donkey", The Poets Of Rhythm knew funk more intimately than most married couples know each other. An essential collection for anyone who's so much as smiled at a trumpet or breakbeat in the last five years.

Review: These days, there are countless bands authentically recreating the fuzzy sounds of 1960s and '70s Black American soul and funk. That wasn't the case when the Poets of Rhythm released their first records in the 1990s. Their attempts to create a new (old) funk sound arguably peaked with 2001's Discern/Define, the German combo's second and final full-length. Here reissued on wax for the first time since with a slightly expanded track list, the album remains a classic collection of funk-some gems that digs deep for inspiration. Yes, there are nods to James Brown, Stax Records and the Meters, but also dusty reggae-soul, Blaxploitation soundtracks and obscure Latino funk. In a word: essential.

Review: Back in the day, Hammond organist Adam Scone came to Brooklin (Brazil) from Brooklyn (NY), and the resulting inspiration that struck him was a new brand of soul. 'Brooklyn To Brooklin' is mostly instrumental, save for Hammond's very own intergalactic choir, and the overarching result is an album of dreamy, psychic and 'tropical' soul-funk, rarely spotted yet richly documented for all our resident completists.

Review: A record about discovery and love from Adam Scones' travels between New York City and Brazil, 'Brookly to Brooklin' is gripping from start to finish, opening with the soulful 'Cold 40's' which showcases Scone's sensational organ skills at their utmost. 'Anadira' is a relaxing tropical slow jam, interlaced with heaven-sent choir vocals. The title track 'Brooklyn to Brooklin' sees the album concept at its full potential, a mix of classic New York jazz sax, courtesy of Neil Sugarman, and Brazilian Bossa Nova rhythms. 'What's Her Name' brings swing into the fray, whilst 'All These Bad Things' is a quintessential lovemaking anthem. On 'Golden State' Jimmy James takes the reigns with some nasty guitar riffs that pierce straight to the soul, sure to be a favourite with many with it's rock and roll attitude.

Review: Daptone has done a fantastic job of serving up authentic soul sounds that pay homage to the past but always bring something new. This time the US lab has put together a bumper collection that is made up of tunes from a live revue they hosted back in 2014. It has been done as part of the label's 20th anniversary and features label house bands, Menahan Street Band and The Budos Band. The show was performed and recorded over three nights in front of a sold out crowd at The World Famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem.

Review: Destination Helsinki: Daptone dig deep into the vaults of their friends at Timmion Records. Heavily championed by the likes of Nicole Willis, it's one of the most influential funk labels to come out of Finland this century, and this collection brings some of the many highlights together. The syrupy falsettos of Jonny Benavidez, the yearning lament of Pratt & Moody, the sincerity of Wanda Felicia and of course the driving focus and funk power of the Soul Investigators. The list of talent on Timmion goes on and on and this is a great snapshot of what they offer. See you in detention.
