Pancho Acosta - "Egyptian Reggae" (3:58)
Money Chicha - "Carnaval De Jujuy" (3:07)
Review: A new take on a Jonathan Richman classic from 1977 which has lit up clubs for 45-odd years, especially during the punk era. The track's infectious rhythm has inspired various reggae remixes but now it's getting a fresh cumbia twist. Cumbia and reggae share a common groove, making them a perfect match for DJs to mix and this one was recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, who transforms the track into an upbeat cumbia gem. The flip side features Acosta's 'Carnaval de Jujuy' blended with Money Chicha's modern take on Peru's fuzzed-out chicha sound.

Pancho Acosta - "Egyptian Reggae" (3:58)
Money Chicha - "Carnaval De Jujuy" (3:07)
Review: Jonathan Richman's 'Egyptian Reggae' has been setting discerning dancefloors alight since its release in 1977, during the golden era of punk. Known for its infectious rhythm, the track has seen a few reggae remixes over the years. However, it was time for something freshia playful yet respectful cumbia twist. Both genres share a certain groove, making them a perfect match, and it's easy to imagine DJs weaving these sounds together in their sets. This new take on 'Egyptian Reggae' has been recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, the founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, and one of Peru's finest cumbia guitarists. Acosta brings his expert touch to the track, transforming it into an upbeat cumbia gem. On the flip side, we're treated to one of Acosta's own originals, 'Carnaval de Jujuy', recorded by Austin-based future cumbia outfit Money Chicha. The song blends Peru's fuzzed-out early chicha sound with Money Chicha's unique, modern interpretation of the genre, delivering a fresh, captivating cumbia vibe.

Midnight In Havana
Kinky Afro Cuban
Review: Like all material released on Original Gravity, this tidy two-tracker from percussionist/band-leader Nestor Alvarezn and producer Neil Anderson sounds like it could have been recorded decades ago but is in fact brand new. It first appeared earlier in the year and has now been granted a second pressing, this time on coloured vinyl. A-side 'Midnight in Havana' is a heavyweight Afro-Cuban treat, with roaring horn lines and energetic organ lines leaping above a weighty, low-slung groove piled high with Latin percussion. The pair get cheeky on the flip, re-imagining Happy Mondays' classic 'Kinky Afro' in an easy listening salsa style, complete with bi-lingual lead vocals and sweltering trumpet solos.

Con La Mano En La Biblia (2:50)
Review: Matasuna Records take us on a trip back to late 60s Panama, offering up two supremely rare tracks which, on their original pressings, would be a costly investment if you were lucky enough to find them. The A-side belongs to Camilo Azuquita and his joyous 'Borombon', a track bristling with exuberant brass and striking piano. On the B-side, Panama Brass lay down 'Con La Mano En La Biblia', a lively affair led by organist Cristobal Munoz Jr and featuring some of the best musicians in Panama at the time.

La Cuna (4:03)
Mambotango (4:31)
Review: Stevie Wonder's 'Pastime Paradise' has thus far been less recognised as an original soul wonderwork, and more so as a sample by American rapper Coolio on the derivative 'Gangster's Paradise'. Though still having been covered by many artists over the years, Major Keys records highlights this enduring 1981 cover of Wonder's 'Paradise' by Latin percussionist Ray Barretto as among their favourites, if not their absolute favourite. Now the label reissue the gem, flaunting its up-to-date, nigh timeless feel; it's the opposite of a miracle that this has never before been released on a 12" single record, despite the fact that it is a favourite on the floors of jazz and soul rooms the world over. It also flips it with Barretto's own 'La Cuna' and 'Mambotango', taken from the same 1981 LP.

Aftershower Funk (3:41)
Fin (2:57)
Review: An intriguing song is 'Aftershower Funk', the Latin American musician Joe Bataan's curt salsa single from 1974. Fresh, cologned, groomed, and with towel firmly wrapped round hair, Bataan's largely instrumental track is about as lightfooted as the sprightly young man he was, then at 34 years old. With heavy tin drum and cowbell clangings peppered throughout, a toe-tapping mood is sure to beset the listener. B-sider 'Fin' continues the mood, uniting percussion with piano, brass, whistle and rhythm guitar; a much fuller exercise in triumphant finality.

Cumbia De Sal (3:33)
Cumbia Sobre El Mar (2:35)
Review: Cumbias En Moog's Cumbia De Sal is an exemplary psychedelic cumbia single - from the main pushers of the niche South American genre, Vampisoul - which this time offers a distinct usage of the Moog synth. The Cumbias En Moog project began in Colombia as a wilfully unique vision that combined traditional cumbia rhythms with vintage synthesizers; two of the group's choicest cuts make it to vinyl here, 'Cumbia De Sal' and 'Cumbia Sobre El Mar'. Far more synthy than guitarry (most cumbia falls into the latter camp) the tracks pit an offbeat, goofy rhythm with stark Moogs, resonant leads and happily crude playing, while their haunting choral vocals add a human touch to said robotics.

Review: Madrid via Cuba musical gang El Combo Batanga have finally dropped this new double-sider 7". It was teased by the early reals sou the a-side which brings plenty of dance floor filing heat with 'El Que La Rompe La Paga'. It's packed with samba shuffle, expressive horn work and results, and relentless keys work designed to get the ass moving. On the flip is 'Toca La Campana' which is a little less dense but not less rhythmic in the way it sways to and fro with fiery Spanish vocals and funk riffs.

Faith Mussa - "Ngoma" (4:38)
Guided Souls - "Freedoms Light" (4:48)
Orchestre Les Mangelepa - "Kanemo" (No Nation dub) (5:33)
Review: The cursed global pandemic may have put paid to this year's Tropical Pressure festival in Cornwall, but thanks to this first compilation style EP from its' new offshoot label, we can now recreate the event's humid, colourful musical vibe in our own homes. The selections are naturally top-drawer, with the heavy tropical Afro-funk of Guy One's EP-opening 'Bangarre Tomme' brilliantly setting the tone. Faith Mussa impresses with the deliciously positive and sun-kissed 'Ngoma' - all rubbery bass, JuJu style guitars and bouncy beats - while Guided Souls get hot and heavy on the raw and fuzzy Afro-house of 'Freedoms Light'. We'd also recommend checking out the 'No Nations Dub' of 'Kameno' by No Nations Orchestra, a sun-bright slab of audio sunshine rich in glistening guitars and punchy horns.

Review: The titular release from Kumomi Records, based in Japan, hears Okinawa salsa band Kachimba 1551 fuse two enduring traditions: Okinawa folk music and salsa. The band embarked on this fusion first in 1998 and have continued their activities in their hometown of Okinawa ever since. A-sider, their rendition of 'Asatoya Yunta', appears first - a folk song said to have originated on Taketomi Island in the Yaeyama Islands, and which has been covered by many musicians around the world (including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, and Akiko Yano). On the B, meanwhile, is 'Uminu Chinboraa', said to have been handed down from 'Ie Island In Kunigami Gun Of Okinawa', a folk song known for its use in traditional party settings.

Review: Courtesy of Vampisoul comes tropical versions of two massive, historic disco hits, both of which fully retain the spirit of the originals. First comes a version 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy' (Rod Stewart) by La Cumbia Moderna de Soledad, a playful mix of the old and the modern. On the B, meanwhile, comes Machuca's Cumbia rendition of Bee Gees 'Stayin' Alive; it's just as valid a dancefloor winner, full of hypnotic, percussive ostinati. Review: Vampisoul dedicate one more 7" to another fresh-from-the-woodfired slice of modern cumbia, this time from the eponymous La Cumbia Moderna De Soledad band and Machuca Cumbia respectively. On the A, the former band offer up a two-toning cumbia version of Rod Stewart's 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?', sparse but well-wrought in its sound. The B is a treat that vibrates at a different, but equally as effective frequency, being a convincingly retro take on the Bee Gees' 'Stayin' Alive', and lending the song's ineluctable melodies a Latin twist by way of hypnotic percs and guitars.

Review: Discodelic is starting a series dedicated to the music of Panama and they kick off with Los Criollos and a fully authorised reissue of their 'Pa' los Panas de San Francisco.' The band might not be as well known as they should and that's down to the fact they recorded only two tunes with this orchestra in the mid-seventies and disappeared forever. Which is a shame, because as this 7" proves - it also comes on coloured vinyl - they had a red hot and infectious sound full of big horns, percussive liveliness and fiery vocals.

Review: This forthcoming 7" pairs two fiery cuts from the Latin American underground, capturing the raw energy of a transformative musical era. Los Pambele's 'Cannabis' layers cumbia rhythms with swirling, reverb-soaked guitars, creating a trance-inducing groove that feels both earthy and psychedelic. On the flip, Los Darlings de Huanuco's 'Marihuana' cranks up the intensity, delivering a garage-tinged anthem brimming with jagged riffs and spirited vocals. The sound is unpolished yet electrifying, a snapshot of a time when regional traditions collided with bold experimentation, leaving behind something truly timeless.

Review: The previous instalment in Mr Bongo's ongoing Brazil 45s series offered up two sought-after cuts from Di Melo's 1975 self-titled debut album. This volume takes a slightly different approach, instead delivering killer cuts from two different artists, both of whom hail from the North of Brazil. On side A you'll find Magalhaes' 1986 gem 'Xangos', a cheery and energetic Lambada workout rich in jangling guitars, shuffling percussion, ear-catching vocals and restless bass. On the reverse Os Panteros takes over with 1987 jam 'Lambada Pauleira', a quirky chunk of Lambada full of fuzzy synths, infectious percussion and lo-fi guitar licks. The cut was famously re-edited some time back by Joutro Mondo, though this original version is - in our opinion - far superior.

Hurling all their roots and inspirations into a heady, bewitching brew of west African, Columbian, Caribbean, Latin and all-round cosmic fusion, the results are four slabs of world funk gold. "Down In The Basement" updates highlife styles with a salubrious big-bottomed disco twist, "The Opposite" ups the tempo with a little more cumbia charm while "Continue The Fun" adds a dub mentality to the mix as we're chugged to oblivion with heads down introspection. Review: "Wow. Sounds like '74 downtown NY Fania Records... Absolutely brilliant." Not our words, but the words of one Gilles Peterson, but we know what he means. Latin supergroup Grupo Magnetico formed from backgrounds in funk, hip-hop & soul, united by a love of Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Fania and classic New York salsa. They have worked with legendary musicians from Cuba, Venezuela and America and led by Toby "El Leon" Shippey, developed their own set and sound. These two tracks were lifted from the Athens Of The North album Positvo from 2018 and feature 'Vulcano V El Gato' (Medley) with 'Somos Latinos' on the B-side. Latin party music in all its clatteringly percussive, bustling glory - no wonder it's being supported by DJ Koco, Patrick Forge, DJ Amir, Mr Thing, Dom Servini, Coco Maria, Cosmo Sofi, Rainer Truby, Miche as well as Peterson. This tune has never been on 45 rpm before and is taken from Diablos Del Ritmo: The Colombian Melting Pot 1960-1985, a compilation by the excellent Analog Africa. The seven-inch single was a riproaring success, with jazz and Afro-Latin DJs around the world turning it into a bona fide scene anthem. Happily, Passavanti has decided to reissue it on red vinyl to celebrate the track's tenth birthday. It's a superb cover all told and, somewhat surprisingly, "I Believe In Miracles" actually works really well as a Salsa record. Full of fiery horns, sing-along, Boogaloo style vocals and infectious percussion, we actually prefer it to the over-played Jackson Sisters take. Recommended!

Mi Amor (4:10)
B-boy Paco (3:38)
Que Rico (4:23)
Linda Negra (4:58)
Review: Berlin-based Voodoocuts knows how to mix up floor-filing sounds from across a range of genres and eras. Now the sonic shapeshifter serves up a first EP for Adeen that packs in five killer cuts. 'La Culebra' kicks off with big horns and Latin rhythms which carry on through the dance-heavy 'Mi Amor'. 'B-boy Paco' completes the first side of vinyl with lively rhythms, horn stabs and florid Spanish vocals. 'Que Rico' kicks off on the flip with another dense arrangement packed with cowbells, funky bass riffs, woodblock hits, shakers and plenty more. 'Linda Negra' is a sleazy yet seductive samba shuffle that brings the heat and will get any party heated up.

Yes You Can (3:33)
Bailen Mi Cumbia (3:55)
Review: Cold-pressed 'Juice On Wax'! Voodoocuts' reshapes series hears the DJ and producer reimagine his many hip-hop, Latin soul, breaks, cumbia and funk favourites for the modern ear. This time, we've a verdant detoxifier hand-blending sonic spinaches, gingers and pomes, taking form as a two-gulp mixture, 'Yes You Can' and 'Bailen mi Cumbia'. The former is a Tribe Called Quest repro deconstructed and reconstructed from scratch, with only the original verison's acapella surviving the blade; otherwise, we've a restorative hangover cure of vibraphone and tremolo-crunk. The second reworks Jimmy Fontanez into a psychedelic post-cumbia come organic house medpak, a second burst of discoid dialysis for the ear otherwise deprived of sweetness.

Review: Chris Bangs is widely, albeit not so, known for coining the term 'acid jazz'. If it weren't for him it's likely we wouldn't have modern day future jazz pushers like Soul Jazz or Brownswood. This new compendium, 'Firebird', charts the DJ and producer's latest sonic explorations, blurring the boundaries between every influence from contemporary jazz, UK electronic dance, and Latin dance styles from bossa nova to salsa. It also contains several examples of what is known as his 'East Coast' sound, which pays homage to the fusion of jazz and funk and which spread throughout UK nightclubs as far back as the early 80s.

Review: Chris Bangs is a legendary figure within the UK jazz-dance scene whose extensive CV includes coining the term 'Acid Jazz'. While he's always been more of a DJ than a producer, his occasional musical outings are always on-point. 'Firebird' is his first solo album since 2008, though it was naturally created with the help of an impressive cast-list of experienced musicians. It was intended to be a collection of dancefloor-friendly tracks that explore his major musical influences - Latin jazz, jazz-funk, Brit-funk, jazz-fusion and so on - and in that regard he's hit the brief. The set's many highlights include the sun-splashed Brazilian heat of 'Samba Do Sueno', the up-tempo, extra-percussive heat of 'Firebird' and a brilliant Batacuda style cover of 'Kitchen (Cosina)' by Dom Un Romao.

Review: Previously unreleased, Joe Bataan (real name Bataan Nitollano) recorded the bulk of the material making up Drug Story in 1972. This new, highly limited box set hears seven revered, rarely-heard gems of Latin jazz, deep soul, raucous boogaloo, and heavy salsa by the legend, most of which were largely salvaged from his very own self-run Ghetto Records vaults. Drug Story was inspired by true events, and hears Bataan croon graciously over themes of destitution, lost family members and friends, and addiction. One of three definitive reissues of Bataan's greatest works, licensed from Bataan himself, with his oversight and input into a 15 page oversized book by Pablo Yglesia,s that details Bataan's larger-than-imagination life and his little Latin label that could.

Review: Candeleros is a six-member, Colombia- and Venezuela-rooted collective based in Madrid that fuse Cumbia, merengue, dub and an array of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, creating a psychedelic, postmodern celebration of Latin sound. Their music blends Andean echoes, cinematic textures and hypnotic percussion into what feels like a ritualistic dance experience and has seen them collaborating with artists like Dodosound and Carlos Talez. They always reject the usual genre boundaries while focusing on cultural activism and the power of collective expression and have performed across Europe. As this album shows, their sound is passionate, borderless and proof that Cumbia has truly rooted itself in Europe.

Review: Candido Y Su Movimiento's cult favourite album Palos De Fuego album is a rhythmic journey through the vibrant landscapes of Afro-Cuban jazz and Latin music that was first released in the 1970s. It superbly showcases the virtuosity of Candido Camero, a percussion maestro often hailed as the "Father of Modern Conga Drumming" as the album pulsates with infectious beats, intricate rhythms, and soulful melodies, all of which embody the essence of Afro-Cuban traditions while embracing contemporary influences. As a testament to Candido's enduring impact on the genre, Palos De Fuego stands tall and is a timeless exploration of percussive brilliance that continues to captivate and inspire Latin jazz lovers worldwide.

Review: Central, the "salsa band closest to the club scene" based in Tokyo, follows up former consecutive singles hits ('Samurai, 'Pastime Paradise') with the new full-length album in which they're housed, Flor De Roble. With a core primetime salsa cover of Stevie Wonder's 'Pastime Paradise' leading the charge, we've then a string of originals here, from 'Flor De 1.1 Rb.' and 'Samurai'. Also included are Carabali's 'Was I Surprised' and Crazy Ken Band's infamous soul masterpiece 'Towel', both again adorned in a bold salsa arrangement. An honorific 25th Anniversary album, though it is new.
