Shaft In Africa
Review: ** Repress for the breaks dons ** The long awaited new Visioneers Limited Edition 45 produced by Marc Mac of 4hero is here at last on BBE offshoot Omniverse. No messin' here as Visioneers go straight for the funk jugular with two dope versions. On the A-Side a version of The Shadows classic ''Apache'' gets flipped by Visioneers remake of Johnny Pate's B-Boy bomb "Shaft In Africa". Heavy horns and bongos aplenty - this is just wanted the doctor ordered. It's limited, it's hot, go get it!

Review: Noriko Mayamoto originally recorded Push in 1978 with one of the legendary figures in Japanese jazz, Isao Suzuki. Now BBE are reissuing this highly prized piece as part of their continuing J Jazz Masterclass series, shining a light on some of the finest jazz from the Far East. Mayamoto started out dancing at Tokyo disco Mugen before embarking on a career as a soul singer, ending up scouted by Suzuki and joining his band. Push captures Suzuki's band in full flow, all fluid bass lines, swooning strings and gossamer keys creating a luxurious bed for Mayamoto's deep, soulful singing style. This record has never been released worldwide and unsurprisingly has been highly prized amongst Western collectors of Japanese music, so you can imagine how long this will stick around for given BBE's reputation for high quality reissues.

My Life
Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing J Jazz Masterclass series of Japanese jazz reissues, BBE has chosen to offer up a new CD edition of Noriko Miyamoto's 1978 set Push, an album widely considered one of the finest soul-jazz LPs produced in the Land of the Rising Sun. Miyamoto started her career as a professional disco dancer, before being asked to join Isao Suzuki's legendary Soul Family Band. Fittingly, it was Suzuki who produced and arranged Push, combining Miyamoto's wonderful vocals with atmospheric, musically rich backing tracks that variously draw inspiration from deep disco, jazz-funk, crossover soul and fusion. A genuine gem that's more than worthy of your hard-earned cash.

Review: As ever BBE are doing great things! Fresh off that killer Volcov compilation, the tireless soul operation get in archival mode for this essential reissue of the self-titled album from funk troupe Moods. Originally released back in 1978 on the Soiree label, original copies of the one and only album from Moods fetch much more than a pretty penny on the collectors market. For a spot of history on Moods, the St. Louis group formed in the late 70s and was headed by band leader, musician and producer Melvin Turnage. The group met in high school and disbanded soon afterwards, which is a great shame on this basis of this seven-track album which is a fantastic example of the Modern Soul sound which bridged the gap between Northern Soul and Disco, introducing synthesisers alongside incredibly tight vocal harmonies and lush instrumental arrangements.

Review: Perennial crate-diggers BBE have long been capable of unearthing hidden gems and shining a light on long-forgotten scenes. Here, with the help of fellow vinyl-sniffer Mr Peabody, they highlight Chicago's little-known 1970s/early 1980s underground disco and boogie scene. For those reared on the familiar sounds of New York disco and boogie, it's something of a revelation. Certainly, there's plenty for disco enthusiasts to get excited about here, from the piano & horn laden grooves of Sheila Hutchinson and Nedra to the tribal, African-influenced dancefloor rhythms of Lady Gwendolyn and Africa International. Along the way, expect to hear everything from hustlin' party jams and essential 80s groove to crackly disco-funk and distinctly cosmic soul. Absolutely essential!

Review: A welcome return to stores for BBE's exploration of the archives of the legendary music library Cavendish Music, which originally appeared as two separate compilations - one curated by Mr Thing, the other Chris Read - five years ago. Both discs are frankly brilliant, with the dusty-fingered duo doing a great job in showcasing the music library's attempts to capture the spirit and sounds of Black American soul, funk and jazz. With 53 high-grade tracks to choose from picking highlights is tough, but our current favourites include the 1970s cop-show flex of 'Snow Mobile', the funky Star Wars flex of 'Star Voyage', the thrillingly low-slung Blaxploitation vibes of 'Riff Raff' and the languid shuffle of 'Giraffe'.

Review: Amazingly, it's five years since the last volume of the Strange Breaks & Mr Thing series, in which the London crate digger and turntablist gets to showcase the depth and diversity of his record collection. Predictably, this belated third installment is full of killer selections, from the low down funk of Dynamic Concept's "La Da Da" and steel band madness of Amral's Trinidad Cavalivers, to the jazz-funk goodness of Harry Beckett's "Ring Within Rings". Mr Thing shows his immense turntable skills on disc one, chopping and looping breaks while keeping things moving, while the second disc features unmixed versions of his ludicrously obscure selections. In a word: essential.

Review: It doesn't seem like five years since BBE last invited London crate digger and turntablist Mr Thing to get his fingers dusty by picking out gems from his record collection for the Strange Breaks & Mr Thing series. Predictably, this belated third installment is full of killer selections that lives up to it's subtitled billing as More Rock Funk Soul Jazz & Soundtrack Breaks For Modern Living. Favourites come thick and fast though the low down funk of Dynamic Concept's "La Da Da" and the jazz-funk goodness of Harry Beckett's "Ring Within Rings" stand out upon first listen. The cats at BBE spare no expense either with this vinyl edition that features fifteen cuts spread across the two slabs, and there's also Mr Thing's peerless mix available on a CD that's slipped in too.

Review: Magic happens when Mr Thing hits the crates. His ability to unearth recordings you're guaranteed to never have heard before, and join the dots in ways you'd never have thought before, his "Strange Breaks" series is legendary. Long since off-press, to celebrate their 20th anniversary BBE have repressed this seminal 2009 sophomore. From the turbo blues fusion of Roy Head and the speeding Mancini feels of Val Marrall's Orchestra to the more sedate, slinky funk of Johnny Griffith and sunny-side roots of Tinga Stewart, Mr Thing's odyssey remains as inciteful, intriguing and as full of treasure as it did seven years ago.
