Review: Fresh off releasing one of the best Frustrated Funk 12"s in some time, West Coast electro explorer Chris Roman aligns with another respected vessel of the Dutch scene in Shipwrec for his latest album North Bend. Roman has been plying his trade for well over a decade now but has really found his creative groove of late. North Bend arrives some 13 years after his debut album, Esemplastic, and its nine tracks find a producer fully confident in the kind of electro he's now producing. Rich in atmosphere and futuristic texture, North Bend is an album that demands your attention from the off and feels quite at home on Shipwrec.

I See What You Did There (9:25)
Review: Nijmegen label Shipwrec have been in fairly imperious form this year, canvassing the spectrum of electro for some fine sounding and even-finer-looking records. Washington State artist Chris Roman issued his second 214 album on Shipwrec last year and returns here for "I See What You Did There", the first of several singles to arrive over the coming months - Central Processing Unit, Frustrated Funk and Lunar Disko also have records in the works with him. Taking shape as a one track 12" for the latest in Shipwrec's Silk Screen Printed Series, "I See What You Did There" snaps and throbs in all the right places across its nine minutes but is tempered with a sense of emotive contemplation that lends it some extra depth.

Acid Shores (7:31)
SEG (4:01)
Bintus Live (part 1) (13:33)
Review: Having previously forged his reputation with a series of hard-wired releases on his own Power Vacuum label, Milo "Bintus" Smee makes his first appearance on Shipwrec. He goes in hard from the off, combining distorted techno kicks, punchy electro percussion hits and winding acid lines on the buzzing "Acid Shores". There's a metallic intensity about "SEG", with pitched down drum-machine cowbells and throbbing electronics helping to drive the track forwards. Flip to the B for "Live Section (#1)", which effortlessly joins the dots between Dexter-style Rotterdam electro, the more stripped-back work of Legowelt, and the no-holds-barred world of dark and funky techno.

Wandering Floes (4:44)
Review: Dutch electro heads Shipwrec are back with Valerio Lombardozzi aka Heinrich Dressel aka Composite Profuse, throwing down some purist electro leanings on the Unalaska Ice Files EP. Starting out with the rich vintage synth tapestries on "30-Foot Wave", while the title track is deep down and dirty electrofunk of the very Drexciyan, aquatic variety. On the flip, we've got some pretty serious remixes of said track; legends The Exaltics deliver a fairly thumping and emotive version which is also worthy of your attention while fellow Italian duo Teslasonic's remix is actually the work of Lombardozzi yet again.

Review: Even for a man that's been as prolific as Ed Upton has for two decades, it's clear the mainstay of UK electro is in the midst of a Midas touch-style production patch with this album for Shipwrec following swiftly on from similar length projects for Mystic & Quantum and Rush Hour No Label. We could throw in all the 12" and track contributions too just to slam home how busy Upton has been. Unlike the albums for the aforementioned labels, Shape Shifting Shaman finds DMX Krew working without the constraints of concept and is no less impressive for it. Indeed there's a breezy confidence to the nine tracks here that nudges the album towards a place amongst Upton's best work of a long and richly rewarding career.

Thinking Using Another's Brain (3:59)
Review: Despite being at it for well over two decades, Ed 'DMX Krew' Upton shows no signs of slowing down. Even more impressively, his EPs remain as essential now as he did in the mid '90s. There's naturally much to admire on this deep, woozy and spacey electro EP for Dutch titans Shipwrec. Amongst the highlights, you'll find the deep boogie/sunny electro hybrid "Cordial", the high-octane bleep and braindance rhythms of "Ping Me Back", the dark Italo throb of "Mini-Owner", and the bubbly, Detroit-goes-to-Romford-via-Chicago quirkiness of closer "Thinking Using Another's Brain". As usual, Upton barely puts a foot wrong, with even the EP's lesser moments being head and shoulders above those produced by most of his rivals.

Parasite (6:27)
Tree In Space (4:09)
Unbelief (6:25)
Meltdown (4:18)
Review: You can't get more reliable than Ed DMX frankly. The veteran artist can do all electro styles imaginable and all with equal elan. This month, for example, is dropping a disco and boogie fried 12" as well as this more classically inclined electro outing on the fine Shipwrec label out of the Netherlands. 'Parasite' has a perfectly elastic and rubbery baseline under celestial melodies, 'Tree In Space' is a twitchy rhythm and 'Unbelief' then settles into a deeper groove with smeared synth chords. 'Meltdown' ends with a darker and more atmospheric sound for the late night hours.

Review: Since he adopted the Ekman guise, Dutch producer Roel Dijcks has graced a small number of well-respected labels with his notably rough edged and dark brand of electro. Possibly most well known for inaugurating the breakout Berceuse Heroique label, Ekman has also released with Netherlands institution Panzerkreuz, the always surprising Gooiland Elektro and UK-based Abstract Forms, whilst delivering a debut album for the Solar One Music label overseen by The Exaltics. Having recently contributed a track to the Club Funny Horse compilation issued on Gooiland, Ekman's next releases arrives through Shipwrec, a Dutch label that specialises in the sort of 3am squat party electro that makes this meeting a perfect alliance - "Sharadia" is a hellish highlight!

Review: Five years on from the release of his fine debut album, M.S.P, analogue fetishist Roel Djicks AKA Ekman has finally got round to producing a follow-up. Packed full of subtle nods towards vintage electronic styles and artists - think IDM, Drexciya style electro, acid house, basement-bothering techno, Autechre and panicked EBM - the album sees Djicks flit between melodious, well thought-out home listening cuts and blistering, tops-off peak-time club anthems. In the latter category you'll find the foreboding techno psychedelia of "Eulers Lucky Number", the wild and wayward acid hustle of "Mills Constant" and the guttural broken techno bounce of growling opener "Holomorpic Functions".

Synaptic Feedback Loops (7:26)
Antinomy (5:20)
Review: Nijmegen electro imprint Shipwrec shows us how its done yet again. After a terrific release previously from Welsh mad scientist Dez Williams, its Roel Dijcks aka Ekman stepping up, following up some killer releases on Pankerkreuz, The Trilogy Tapes and Berceuse Heroique. "Autapse" begins proceedings in haunting fashion; spooky church organs provide the backdrop for an epic, soaring acid lead while "Uncertainty Principle" is sub-aquatic, Drexciyan electro for freaks. On the flip is the title track; keeping on like before but with a four to the floor beat for added dancefloor dynamics. Finally "Antinomy" delves into deeper terrain; its razor sharp and morphing synth line leading you further into the darkness of the abyss.

Review: Given the frequent appearance of new 12" singles from The Exaltics - the most familiar pseudonym of German electro/techno/experimental veteran Robert Witschakowski - it's a surprise to find that The Girl & The Chameleon is his first full-length for two years. Largely dark, intense, creepy and floor-friendly, it offers a range of thumping acid techno and electro workouts, interspersed with occasional ambient interludes and musical curveballs. It's arguably these surprise additions, rather than those dancefloor cuts in his tried-and-tested formula, which bring the album alive. Check, for example, the raw 303 lines, bold bleeps and breakbeats of the early Meat Beat Manifesto style madness of "The Chase", and the drowsy, pitched-down intelligent techno revivalism of "No Way Back"; both are superb.

Review: It has somehow been over a decade since Galaxian put out their last album. We Are Power finds them head in an all new direction as they ruminate on "the confrontation and power clash between humankind, nature, the spiritual and mechanistic industrial growth societies." Monologues make that explicit in places, while the Glaswegian's productions are generally a little softer than in the past. There are ambient beauties amongst more kinetic electro kickers and caustic techno cuts that fire every synapse in your body. It's an expansive work and we are very much glad they are back.

Serge Geyzel - "Still There" (4:58)

Manasyt - "Row Hammer" (4:49)
Andrew Red Hand - "No War" (6:32)
Alpha Visitor - "Inter Limit" (2:56)
Jauzas The Shining - "Shemale" (4:54)
Review: Electro is fundamentally modern. The coldness of the machine laid bare, a human attempt to express through circuits and wiring. Despite adhering to specific codes and norms, it is a sound that refuses to be pigeonholed. It is with this in mind that Shipwrec has collected a wealth of international talent to showcase their own vision of this bracing style. Serge Geyzel incises from the needle drop, the acid blistered 'Still There' is sliced and quartered by scissoring snares. Endfest changes the trajectory with the modular warmth of 'La Chouffe' before the lines change and Manasyt delivers the darkened angles and punishing percussion of 'Row Hammer.' Andrew Red Hand maintains the shadowy synthlines of his predecessor, industrial undertones bubbling to the surface in distortion-soaked aggression. The mood shifts with Alpha Visitor. Crystalline chords are punctured by crisp drum patterns, stabbing keys and broad arcs unveil a world of sci-fi inspirations. The finale comes from Jauzas the Shining. Broad sweeps introduce 'Shemale' before dripping drums are countered by samples and icy blasts. Modern machine music from six masters.

Review: Mythic Lowlands collective Lost Trax believe in the purity of techno as an art form, maintaining their anonymity over the past ten years to ensure the focus remains "on the music, not the face or fashion behind it." After intermittent transmission the past decade, recent months have seen the Lost Trax machine in full flow with this Flatliner 12" for Shipwrec arriving mere months after they appeared on the Dutch label via The Return split release. Some four tracks deep, this clear marbled 12" finds Lost Trax exploring the outer galactic realms of the techno utopia, with lead track "Faith" a towering highlight. Clap heavy techno is the order of the day on the title cut, whilst "Lost" sinks deep into the swamp of squelchy 303ness. Proceedings end on a high with the vintage electro shimmer of "Renderer".
