Abdulla Rashim - "Track 6" (16:07)
Review: Berlin Atonal returned two years ago from a long hiatus, 23 years to be exact. After three tremendous festivals this decade, they now present us with their first recordings since 1984. These particular ones from the 2014 edition. Cabaret Voltaire (in this incarnation featuring only Richard H Kirk) was a true highlight and contributes "Microscopic Flesh Fragment" and "Universal Energy". One half of Demdike Stare Miles Whitaker went solo, presenting his truly unique take on techno, and the slow burning attitude of "Vagabond No. 7" is evidence of this. New Zealand's Fis also appears; rather uncategorisable as always on "Dist CL (Atonal Version)." On the third disc we have Northern Electronics main man and modern auteur Abdulla Rashim presenting two commissions from his captivating atmospheric set that year. Limited to 700 copies.

Review: The reissue of Cagnet's Love Generation soundtrack is a nostalgic treasure for fans of 90s Japanese drama music. Originally composed for the hit series Love Generation (1997), starring Takuya Kimura and Takako Matsu, this soundtrack beautifully captures the show's emotional depth. Cagnet. led by Daisuke Hinata, crafted a unique blend of smooth jazz, pop, and wistful melodies that perfectly mirror the highs and lows of the drama's love story. Ahead of the time for then, now fits well with the Japanese reissue focus on smooth City Pop sounds. What sets this soundtrack apart is its balance between atmospheric background music and catchy, memorable tunes, which play an integral role in heightening the emotional resonance of key scenes. These tracks show Cagnet's ability to weave together soulful rhythms with melodic sophistication, making this reissue a perfect trip down memory lane. Now available on clear red double vinyl, Love Generation is an ideal piece to fit in with the classic Japanese drama soundtracks.

Review: Fukagawa Kiyotaka is the Japanese artist behind the Calm alias. He is a master of instrumental downtempo funk and soul, with lashings of Mediterranean and Balearic vibes in his lush and escapist sounds. He has put out many an album over the years and now Hell Yeah, a label he has recorded new material for recently, reissue one of his greats. Before takes a horizontal approach to disco and house with beautiful sax and synths, musical grooves and plenty of starry and sunny motifs.

Review: From the moment you hit play on 'A New Threat Is Born', the first few minutes on this soundtrack to the acclaimed video game, Resident Evil 3, you could easily close your eyes and feel like you're back sat in front of a TV playing the story through. If you're unfamiliar with the franchise, let's just say it (re)wrote the book on survival horror, and a big part of this was in the scores used to accompany the on-screen tension. Less focused on specific theme tunes and tracks, over time the emphasis has increasingly fallen on building atmosphere and setting up jump scares for unassuming players. On a record, that sounds like a combination of fast moving and quickly developing instrumental movements and intimidating sound effects. Perhaps not the dinner party soundtrack you were looking for, nevertheless it makes a big impact.

Review: Audio Fidelity are fast-becoming one of our favourite reissue labels! It was them who were responsible for the Blade Runner re-vamp, an album so rare in its original vinyl format that It was truly unmissable. This time its another doozy, and also one which has been relegated to the pockets of the Discogs shotters. Wendy Carlos' inimitable Tron soundtrack was probably the best part of the film anyway, but now you can at least have the choice of owning both film and score! It's just tune after tune, spanning different genres and sounds. From the rocky sounds of "Only Solutions" to more abstract electronic moments such as "We've Got Company", this LP has it all. Don't snooze, it'll be gone all over again!

Review: John Carpenter's The Fog gets a celebratory 40th Anniversary release on Waxworks Records. The movie was an American supernatural horror that was co-written and directed by John Carpenter, about a glowing fog that sweeps over a small coastal town and is filled with vengeful ghosts. The sound track is synth driven (making great use of gear such as Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, Prophet 10, and Minimoog Model DO) and brilliantly spooky and is, according to Carpenter himself, one of his best musical works. We agree.

Review: John Carpenter remains one of the most celebrated soundtrack composers of all time, and in his vast body of work, his musical accompaniment to the seminal slasher film Halloween is a standout. To mark four decades since its initial release, it gets a high-quality reissue that pays homage to the brilliance of the original. That was a famously low-budget work with high-impact results that brought the power of a rock concert, the tension of a cinematic masterpiece and the eeriness of his chosen synths together into one thrilling and immersive world of sound. From the first iconic keys of the opening theme, this one has you hooked so cop this new edition and listen in if you dare.

Review: With Christmas fast approaching, Throbbing Gristle founder member Chris Carter has decided to offer up the perfect stocking filler for industrial and experimental electronica enthusiasts: a limited coloured 6xLP retrospective focusing on the early part of his solo career. While it omits his 1980 debut "The Space Between", it does include expanded, re-mastered versions of 1985's surprisingly ambient "Mondo B", 1998's trippy, hypnotic and rhythmical "Disobedient Redux" and 1999's brilliant "Small Moon Redux". Even more excitingly, one of the box's LPs is the most experimental, out-there and inspired of all, as it is made up entirely of previously unreleased tracks recorded between 1973 and 77. In truth, this LP is worth the entrance price on its own.

Review: The Aland Islands may not be the world's most famous archipelago, but there's clearly a lot of inspiration to be found in these 6,500 or so rocks in the Baltic Sea, located between Sweden and Finland. A corner of the planet that's rugged, unspoilt, and cast in a mythological light, in 2017 Jeremiah Chiu and Marta Sofia Honer opted to decamp to the area in a bid to help barn raise a small inn, Hotel Svala, in the Kumlinge municipality which is home to little over 300 people.

If that information doesn't conjure images of remote serenity, of traditions and practices that have lasted aeons, then we don't really know what would. After the building's erection, the pair found some time to host artistic residencies and workshop programmes, building a creative bridge between the US and the islands in the process. This record is the result of that; a majestic and inspiring adventure through deep ambient.

Now it appears that 'Civilist' has taken the reins on their own work, officially reissuing the album directly from the source. It would go with the territory, not least since a spate of recent live performances by the artist seems to have signalled something of an 'opening up'. We're just as blown away by 1 as we were before; with its sensitive melodies and stumbly analog tone loops, building to slow-burning near-nothings.

Review: 40 years have now passed since the formation of Xymox, the band that morphed into Clan of Xymox two years later. During the 1980s, they were pioneers of what would now be known as 'darkwave' and have continued to offer up albums in this style - with a dash of goth-rock thrown in at times - periodically ever since. 'Spider On The Wall' was first released in 2020 and here gets a much-needed reissue on blue and yellow splattered vinyl. It's a fine set that sounds like it could have been recorded in the band's mid-80s heyday, with highlights including the post-Joy Division New Order flex of 'She', the Vince Clarke-era Depeche Mode strut of 'Into The Ever Known', the throbbing, EBM-influenced dancefloor goodness of 'All I Ever Know' and the pleasingly doom-laden darkness of 'When We Were Young'.

Clan of Xymox are one of those bands that represent what is so fantastic about music - passionate players who have focused on honing their craft, and exploring variants on the original blueprint while embracing new ideas, for over 40 years now. The Amsterdam group arrived amid a rising tide of synth wave and, for many, represent the original vanguard of darkwave, helping push a sound early which would later be adopted by some huge names (The Cure, Gary Numan, to name but two).

We find them now four decades deep, then, and still packing fresh thoughts and a hunger to experiment and explore. A masterpiece of goth synth rock, packed with an atmosphere befitting the year in which it was born (2021), Limbo is the ultimate soundtrack to a dystopian future that has long-since become the present, an age when hope is not dead, but shares its bed with despair.

Review: Clan of Xymox are one of those bands that represent what is so fantastic about music - passionate players who have focused on honing their craft, and exploring variants on the original blueprint while embracing new ideas, for over 40 years now. Review: Bandmates Peter Christopherson and John Balance were allegedly holed up in a Victorian mansion in the almost-forgotten English seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare, in the midst of a drug binge when they got cracking on Musick To Play In The Dark. Location aside, it's hardly the most original genesis of an album, but nevertheless the end product was a sign of just how talented the artists are - give the average person a bag full of powders and pills and ask them for a record. Then see what happens.

Coil's tenth album arrived in 1999, bookending one part of their story and beginning the next. It's here the players opted to embrace ambient, glitch, minimalism and 'kosmische musik' - experimental rock sub-genre 'cosmic music' popularised in West Germany during the late-1960s. Or, to use the outfit's own terminology, they invented 'moon musick', marking their transition to a "lunar group". The results are mesmerising.

Review: Originally released as a double CD in 2002, Moon's Milk (In Four Phases) is a collection of four EPs Coil issued seasonally in 1998 via their Eskaton imprint. Featuring John Balance, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, Drew McDowall, and William Breeze, it was recorded in their Chiswick, London home studio before they relocated to Weston-Super-Mare. This pivotal work has long been considered a high point in Coil's discography, though it was never reissued or pressed on vinyl at the time. Arranged around the equinoxes and solstices, Moon's Milk captures Coil's deep dive into improvisation, ritualistic sound design and mystical atmospheres and stands proud as a testament to their individuality.

Review: Dais continue their dedicated work returning the music of Coil back to their ever-loving public, now tackling one of their most highly prized pieces from their twilight years. Moon's Milk (In Four Phases) was originally released as four singles titled Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice. It's generally accepted the whole project is meant to be experienced as a total body of work, though, and after years of fans putting up with a bootleg edition, there's finally a proper, triple vinyl pressing of dark ambient masterpiece from one of the most enigmatic groups in British electronic music history.

Review: Coil arguably were in their best form as the new millennium dawned as well as being already deep into their career. Musick To Play In The Dark not only lived up to its name, it marked a transition both sonically and astrologically for the band as they declared a new era as a lunar rather than solar group. Mixing gently melodious ambient motifs and immersive aural textures with more experimental sounds, spoken and sung vocals and a variety of unobtrusive rhythms, the album remains one of the most vivid and enjoyable outings in their vast, action-packed catalogue. Whether it's spooky distorted sounds on 'Strange Birds', 'Red Queen''s strange droning late-night piano soul, or the yearning ambient pop on 'The Dreamer Is Still Asleep', this is a subtly bold record packed with exceptional ideas.

Review: First compiled as a double CD in 2002, Moon's Milk (In Four Phases) is a suite of four EPs that Coil released seasonally via their in-house Eskaton imprint across 1998. The line-up for these sessions were John Balance, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, Drew McDowall and William Breeze. Recorded primarily at their home studio in Chiswick, London on the eve of a permanent relocation to the small seaside town of Weston-Super- Mare, the collection has long loomed as a pivotal and pinnacle work in the group's discography, but has never been officially reissued, or re-pressed on vinyl. Time has only ripened its tapestry of regal strangeness. Arranged sequentially in tribute to the equinoxes and solstices, Moon's Milk captures Coil at a revelatory crossroads, leaning deeper into improvisation, spontaneity and sound design. 'Moon's Milk or Under an Unquiet Skull' initiates the proceedings on 'Spring Equinox', a two-part netherworld organ seance woven from vocal drones, cathedral keys, seasick strings, and opiated undertow. From there, 'Summer Solstice' skews lighter but no less incantational, with Balance embracing his voice- as-instrument across lucid dream torch songs ('Bee Stings'), purgatorial spoken word ('Glowworms/Waveforms'), sultry chamber pieces ('Summer Substructures'), and falsetto ravings ('A Warning From The Sun (For Fritz)'.

Review: Perhaps only dedicated avant-garde electronic heads will know about The New Backwards, the final project from the seminal industrial band Coil. But that doesn't make this 2008 masterpiece worthy of this new gory, visceral reissue; far from it. Limited to just 555 copies and splattered with the murderous blood of listeners who didn't survive the album's first incarnation from beginning to end, this one contains 8 additional tracks, including an exclusive live 'work in progress' track ('Backwards'), documenting the many criminally insane production choices Peter Christopherson and co. would make in real time.

Review: Three decades ago, Coil released one of their most arresting an ear-catching albums, Love's Secret Domain. Inspired not by their intense industrial roots but rather the developing dance music culture - think sample-fired hip-hop, the jaunty organs of U.S house, hallucinatory ambient, bleeping electronica, bass-heavy UK techno and leftfield synth-pop - it marked a thrilling new chapter in the band's career. This expanded 30th anniversary tells the full story, stretching out the original album and a wealth of rare and previously unreleased material (extended versions, demos and unheard tracks) across three slabs of gold-coloured wax. The price may raise a few eyebrows, but copies are limited, and it really is the definitive edition of a genuinely brilliant album.

Review: This is an absolute treat for fans of experimental industrial noisniks Coil. If you fit that description, you should already be salivating at the prospect of a triple-vinyl album containing previously unheard, unreleased material. "Swanyard" is in effect an extended trawl through the late John Balance and Peter Christopherson's archives, focusing in particular on a productive period between 1993 and 1996 that saw the pair release a trio of acclaimed albums. Much of the material could be classed as either demos or work-in-progress sketches inspired by Christopherson's vivid dreams, but such was the quality of the pair's work that it sounds much more eccentric, vibrant and "complete" than many comparable compilations.

Review: British experimental band Coil remain hardcore favourites for record collections of a certain age. They were on fire in the late eighties and early nineties and often switched it up from one album to another. Following on from the release of new editions of Love's Secret Domain and Musick To Play In The Dark 2 comes this trifold edition of The New Backwards, which was initially conceived in 2007. It is an extended edition that revisits a number of tracks that didn't fit with the band's first posthumous release Ape of Naples from 2005, and features plenty of chaotic rhythms and outrageous grooves that all have their own unique flow and atmosphere.

This one first came back in 2005 and is a go-to for fans as it is just a great example of the band's singular sonic world. The album was put together by Peter Christopherson a year after Jhonn Balance's deadly fall and it features re-workings of the live favourites like 'Amethyst Deceivers' and Love Secret's Domain album track 'Teenage Lightning' plus a numb of tunes first meant for the ultimately ill-fated Backwards long player. Grammy-nominated engineer Jessica Thompson has remastered all the originals for this new reissue.

Love's Secret Domain
Review: British experimental band Coil were already alternate poster boys by the release of their third studio album in 1991. That said, Love's Secret Domain was a slight departure from their previous sound with brooding synths and melodies pleased by samples inspired by acid house. Tying that influence in further, Marc Almond is a guest vocalist on 'Titan Arch.' The band's heavy drug use - and 48 hour long stints with no sleep and "constant hallucinations of 10 foot tall Amazonian warriors and Babylonian kings" - had a big impact on the according of this album and lend it some of its more outlier sound effects and moods.

This 30th-anniversary reissue of a key experimental release is a journey into the darker realms of electronic music, showcasing the duo's exploration of ambient, industrial and glitch-inspired soundscapes. The release features a stark contrast between the rhythmic, almost club-ready track, infused with danceable energy and the more experimental, glitch-heavy compositions that delve into an unsettling, ritualistic atmosphere. The latter, considered one of the duo's most daring works, uses manipulated sounds, haunting textures and a pervasive sense of sonic unease to create a deep listening piece. The reissue compiles rare material, including previously unreleased tracks, alongside the duo's final appearance under this project. Fans of avant-garde electronic music will appreciate the unique blend of rhythmic elements and abstract textures. While some may prefer later works from the duo, this collection remains a fascinating piece for those drawn to experimental, atmospheric music that pushes the boundaries of sound and composition.

Review: This 30th-anniversary reissue of a key experimental release is a journey into the darker realms of electronic music, showcasing the duo's exploration of ambient, industrial and glitch-inspired soundscapes.

Review: Four Rooms reflects a very fun time in Hollywood, or at least the annals of American cinema. Co-directed by Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, the story of the fictional Los Angeles-set Hotel Mon Signor, and the strange, demanding, off-putting, and straight up intimidating guests that stay there on New Year's Eve - just as Tim Roth starts his first shift on the job as bellhop - is full of energy and a carefree, playful attitude. It's the kind of movie which, if it were made today, would no doubt be rushed straight to the bottom of the New Releases section on whatever streaming service you've given in to because it would feel cheap rather than charismatic. But in 1994, catching a quintet of fresh filmmakers on the rise, at a time when positivity reigned and the silver screen still had an ounce of class, means the whole thing worked well. As for the soundtrack, we veer between Americana and a reworking of the theme from 1960s US TV series Bewitched, weird, meditative vocal drone and lounge music.

Review: Max Cooper has never been one to conform. The electronic composer, musician, producer and DJ has built his career around trying to push the limits of musical and visual arts tech, either in the studio or live arena. So it's little surprise to learn On Being, his latest long player, was conceived through a process of reversing standard relationships between artist, their experiences and influences, and the audience. Over a two year period, Cooper gathered anonymous quotes from strangers dealing with existential questions: what do you want to express that you can't in everyday life? What's it like to live inside your mind? More so, what does it mean to be human in 2025? As a result, shared and collective grief, regret, hope, joy, hurt, love and other emotions are the root of every track here, each named after evocative bits from those quotes. It's stunning and emotionally powerful, even if you don't know the back story, with the artist now intent on continuing the concept through other projects.

Review: The music from Apocalypse Now is a compelling piece of the film's unique atmosphere, composed by Carmine Coppola and his son, Francis Ford Coppola. This remastered gatefold 2xLP presents a score that is anything but conventional. Featuring bold electronic experimentation, the music complements the film's depiction of chaos and inner turmoil. Tracks like 'The Delta' and 'The Dossier' create a meditative, eerie backdrop, while 'Orange Light' and 'Voyage' highlight the hallucinatory journey of its protagonist, with the latter infusing a touch of psychedelic guitar. While it's not a traditional, action-driven score, the pulsating synths of 'Nung River' and dissonance of 'Chef's Head' bring tension to the forefront. Its final moments with 'Finale' bring reflection to a movie that explores the boundaries of duty and sanity. Although challenging at times, the music's blend of synthetic and natural elements provides a fascinating listen, especially for those open to a bold 1970s electronic sound.

Review: Iam8bit do vital work in releasing the soundtracks of contemporary video games, many of which may have otherwise never heard any semblance of independent appreciation. This record is the soundtrack for the game Eastward, an adventure RPG game developed by Pixpil and published by Chucklefish, released in 2021. A whopping 73 tracks appear, all composed by one Joel Corelitz, who gradates a diverse range of paints on an emotional rollercoaster of a sonic palette, reflecting the game's story of a miner and a mysterious girl who embark on a journey across a post-apocalyptic, effective open world.

Review: What better way to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Coraline by reissuing its stunning soundtrack on vinyl? Composed by Bruno Coulais, the score captures the eerie yet playful spirit of the film with remarkable depth. Coulais, supported by the Budapest Orchestra and Choir, masterfully evokes the dark whimsy of Coraline's world, blending a sense of wonder with underlying tension. Not to be overlooked, the 'Other Father Song' by They Might Be Giants also makes a memorable appearance on the album. This 2xLP set comes in a lavish, limited-edition package, featuring a pop-up gatefold that vividly brings the Pink Palace to life in 3D. A long-sought-after release in Mondo's catalogue, this reissue marks a perfect tribute to Laika's 2009 stop-motion classic. Based on Neil Gaiman's novel, Coraline tells the tale of a young girl adjusting to life in the mysterious Pink Palace Apartments. When she stumbles upon a portal to another dimension, the alternate reality offers her everything she desires i at a terrifying cost. Coulais' haunting melodies guide listeners through this fantastical journey, blending childlike curiosity with a creeping sense of danger, making this soundtrack a true auditory experience.

Review: After their first round was such a success, Gary Crowley and Jim Lahat have been tasked with pulling together another essential collection of punk and new wave from the 70s and 80s, and you can rest assured they've done it again. There are some major, familiar names here like The Clash, The Slits and Ramones, but there's also a hell of a lot of rare delights from the likes of The Limit, The Art Attacks and The Newtown Neurotics. Musically, there's plenty of range too from spiky three-chord pub rock and punk through to Linton Kewsi Johnson and Dennis Bovell's crossover dub as Poet & The Roots. That's just a tiny overview of this mammoth six-disc set, which takes you deep into the heart of a vital, thrilling period in alternative music.

Review: In the mid-80s, Svitlana Okhrimenko, Oleksandr Kohanovs'kyi, and Tamila Mazur, students at the Reinhold Glier Kyiv Academy of Music, formed the foundation of Cukor Bila Smert. Their blend of music and camaraderie led to the addition of Eugene Taran, who further helped shape the band's vision. Dubbed Sugar - White Death, their ironic moniker challenged media sensationalism and amidst endless musical exploration, they crafted two albums in 1988 and 1989. The band's unique "sugar calypso sound" emerged, a blend of Kohanovs'kyi's music and lyrics by Okhrimenko and Taran. A significant studio session in 1990 yielded tracks featured on the Mannered Music compilation which sparked international interest. Their journey concluded in 1993 with the release of "Selo" by Koka Records, and now some of the best bits make it onto this new collection.

Review: The Long Shadow Falls collects the 41 unknown and redreamt mixes that Current 93 created for two (long-ago sold-out) lathe-cut 12" releases, respectively titled 'The Long Shadow Falls' and 'Why Can't We All Just Walk Away?'. Whereas the original lathe pressings are lost to time, this reissue thankfully revives this curiously lengthy record. The former suite is riven across a whopping 39 twelve-or-so-minute ambient/post-rock cuts, while 'Why Can't We All Just Walk Away' comes as a single fourteen minute opus, and is backed by a short untitled tune. Yes, this is the same song repeated 41 times over, with subtle differences in the mix between them. Evincing the musical cunning of a Himalayan cat, these are just the sorts of antics we've come to expect from Tibet and co.

Review: The haunting score for the most recent episode in the beloved series has finally arrived on vinyl, marking the game's tenth anniversary. This release celebrates a soundtrack that brilliantly mirrors the eerie, claustrophobic atmosphere of Sevastopol Station while paying homage to the iconic style of Jerry Goldsmith's original Alien score. Pressed on translucent "blood green" marbled vinyl, the music takes listeners through a tense journey, balancing orchestral dread with unnerving electronic textures. Tracks like 'Welcome to Sevastopol'. 'Quarantine' and 'Working Joes' perfectly encapsulate the game's blend of suspense and terror. The soundscape reflects the game's grimy, retro-futuristic aesthetic, immersing the listener in cold industrial corridors and the vast loneliness of space. Moments of creeping dread are interspersed with fleeting glimmers of resilience, mirroring Amanda Ripley's determined journey. iam8bit's release also features stunning artwork by Nimit Malavia, capturing the isolating terror of the game's universe. With its gripping combination of atmospheric design, tense compositions and nods to the original Alien legacy, this soundtrack doesn't just accompany the gameiit becomes part of the chilling experience.

The Art of No-Art
Cat: 899522

Edition of 100 hand-numbered copies, 364 pages, 12" x 8" perfect bound book, incl.print, incl. download
Notes: A new book of scores by artist and composer Philip Corner (b. 1933). The Art of No-Art is a collection of 385 new graphic scores written between 2019 and 2022. Each score is a single-page meditation based around octaves. Though written mostly for piano, the scores could be arranged for other instrumentation (for those with fewer than an 8 octave range).

The Art of No-Art explores the endless possibilities of one musical note (and its bounded harmonics). The pieces can be performed by people of any skill level; rudimentary or advanced navigations are possible.
