Review: Since her debut EP and LP arrived in 2019, Arlo Parks has grown into one of the most vital voices in modern British soul. Following on from 2021's Collapsed In Sunbeams album, My Soft Machine comes on mellow and magnificent, backed up by a strong cast of collaborators but very much steered by Parks at the helm. There's space for crossover pop hooks on the likes of the Paul Hepworth-produced 'Weightless' while Phoebe Bridgers lends her skills to 'Pegasus', and everything feeds into a universal dose of ear-catching neo-soul and artful pop fit for every home. Review: Liverpool's Courting are a breath of fresh air, totally breaking from the received traditions of their home city with an overarchingly alt-rock album, New Last Name, with sounds distinctly informed by the emo and punk sounds known to have developed in the USA, though in reality it weaves between indie and dance-pop too. New Last Name is unabashed in its melodic sensibility and high-fantasmic references; unrestrained and chaotic, the album always meanders stylistically but always brings it together, largely by way of its notable use of autotune on every track on Sean Murphy O'Neill's vocals. An amazing sophomore record to complement 2022's Guitar Music.

Review: The Cure's live album 'Paris' catches the band in the summer of 1992. This tour came after a siesmic shift in the previously fairly static line up of the goth pop icons, with original frontman Robert Smith and long serving bassist Simon Gallup joined by drummer Jason Cooper, keyboardist Roger O'Donnell and guitar player Perry Bamonte for the first time, all of whom remain part of their live ensemble 30 years later. The setlist starts with their evergreen opener 'Shake Dog Shake' but this selection double vinyl captures more deep cuts - 'The Figurehead', 'One Hundred Years' and 'Apart' as examples - than hits, although the dark pop of 'Close To Me' does make an appearance close to its end.

Review: Norwegian indie talent Girl In Red kicked off her musical journey by sharing her home-recorded tunes as a teenager back in 2017. She has since become renowned for her raw lyrics and for delving into the everyday struggles and intricacies of relationships and has won a legion of fans, not least among them Taylor Swift,who invited her out on tour. Her breakout moment came with the viral sensation 'I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend,' followed by the enchanting 'We Fell in Love in October' in 2018. Fast forward to 2021, she unveiled her debut full-length album and soared up the charts. Now she is back with I'm Doing It Again Baby which comes on limited gatefold red vinyl and is full of more of her guitar-driven melodic indie-pop sounds and singalong hooks.

Review: The Window Is The Dream finds Jana Horn go ever deeper into her own personal inner space than ever before. It is a work that builds on her well-received debut Optimism and makes her well worth of the one-to-watch tag she received when it dropped. This one saw Horn go to upstate New York to record with "electro-primitivism of the Silver Apples, austere rhythm kings This Heat and The Raincoats' time-bending Odyshape" in mind and distill them into her own forms. Her transfixing voice is at the centre of each tune with skeletal rhythms and melodies making for a bewildering listen.

Review: South African Warrick Sony is a ground breaking composer who was behind the Kalahari Surfers project which now gets a vital spotlight courtesy of Emotional Rescue. This compilation shows how effortlessly eclectic his sound was - from jive rhythms to jazz, tabla to political speeches and much more in between. A Hindu pacifist who was once conscripted into the South African Defense Force, he founded this group as a way out getting his ides out there, calling on other musicians as and when he needed them. It was the first radical white anti-apartheid pop in South Africa and as this vital collection shows it explored polyrhythms, slow motorik, dub sound collage and even a goofy cover of Nancy Sinatra.
