Review: After 20 years of soulful and authentic rock & roll blues, Eli Paperboy Reed definitely had a right to celebrate. Originally recorded in a basement in Allston, Massachusetts, completely live onto and direct to analogue tape in mono, this collection was first released on a limited run of 300 CDs, self-released, and mostly sold by hand on the streets of Cambridge, close to Harvard University. Now redone, pressed-up and polished for 'proper release', you get all 12 original tracks and another 14 that never saw the light of day before. Four of those were recorded at the time of the others, the remainder come from a radio session the following year. All of them are incredible, and prove that it's not only the Deep South that can make these raw and unflinchingly honest sounds.

Lead single 'Loft Music' captures this spirit with scattered percussion, urgent synths and bold horns and the whole thing is inspired by New York's 1970s loft jazz scene. Surmacz channels its freeform energy and builds something raw, direct and powerful where intensity only climbs as the album progresses.

Howarth is well respected, not least for his collaborations with John Carpenter, and here captures the film's eerie tension and anti-consumerist themes with moody synths, bluesy motifs and minimalist sound design that is always hugely evocative. This expanded edition offers remastered audio and additional cues that heighten the mood and deepen the atmosphere. The music's hypnotic, slow-burning energy perfectly mirrors the paranoia and grit of the movie, so it's a landmark score in sci-fi and horror soundtracks.

Review: El Buho's (Robin Perkins') influential 2017 debut album returns with its first repress, aiding our reflections on an album that helped define the digital folklorica and "natural cumbia" movements emergent in electronic music in the latter half of the 2010s. Balance weaves a complex darn of naturalism, Latin American rhythms, and modern synthetic percussion design, smudging the lines cordoning off organics and synthesis. Hailed in the press as "the ultimate fusion of nature and music" and for evidencing Mexico's indigenous roots in sound, El Buho helped bridge organic and digital worlds of cumbia Andina and chicha with electronic textures here, presaging and perhaps causing the clamour over cumbia that has since ensued.

Review: Argentine electro-cumbia innovator Chancha Via Circuito (Pedro Canale) has a truly strong sense of give and take. His debut movements saw to Bienaventuranza (2018), a critically acclaimed album deep-setting his role in a gauzy downtempo reshape of the global music idiom. A full remix EP of the record followed, spewing forth fresh interpretations by echelonic music masters, including Euro-techno titan Nicola Cruz on 'Alegria', and Spanish producer Baiuca. Now, finally, comes the third in a three-step movement of remixes, this time hearing Chancha Via Circuito himself offer his own remixing hand to several of said very same artists, the works of El Buho, Nickodemus, and Lagartijeando also in tow. Deep, earthy tunes, full of natural oud harmonics blended with chanting, understated downbeats.

The album was recorded live in Prague and brings Zawinul's spirit to life with raw energy and deep improvisation alongside Kinsey's seasoned rhythm section. As part of that, Hadrien Feraud and Gergo Borlai join forces with rising saxophonist Patrick Bartley Jr to blend jazz mastery with modern flair alongside guest appearances from Pedro Martins, Meredith Salimbeni and Bobby Thomas Jr, who further elevate the sound. Far from an exercise in nostalgia, this is a great reimagining of a jazz legacy.

Review: Warda Ftouki was an Algerian singer whose songs tot up to a repertoire of about 300; all shine with the coptic reverence of a scarab beetle, triangulating a legacy of traditional songcraft stretched between North Africa and the Middle East. Wewantsounds here present the first-ever vinyl reissue of We Malo, her 1975 gem. Backed by a full Egyptian orchestra and penned by famed composer Baligh Hamdi, the album is a blanching blend of classical Arabic music and 70s funk, with electric guitar and organ flourishes adorning an undivided two sides of tape. This edition has newly remastered audio by Coloursound Studio (Paris), faithful reproduction of the original cassette artwork, and a two-page insert with fresh liner notes by Mario Choueiry of the Institut du Monde Arabe.

Review: Wewantsounds continues its deep dive into Algerian music with the first-ever reissue of Les Abranis' sought-after-by-those-who-know 1983 long player, Album No. 1. Originally recorded in Paris and privately pressed in small quantities, the album, which is also known as Id Ed Was, fuses Kabyle rhythms with funk and touches of reggae. This reissue has been curated by Cheb Gero (of recent Sweet Rebels compiling fame) and features remastered audio, though it retains the original artwork. It's a great line document of Algeria's diasporic groove with a two-page insert featuring fresh liner notes by journalist Rabah Mezouane.

Review: Western Lore reasserts its place at the vanguard of contemporary jungle with this 12-track set, a widescreen survey of the genre's evolving emotional and rhythmic terrain. Founded by Bristol artist Dead Man's Chest, the label's curatorial strength lies in its ability to bridge eras and sensibilities-pairing established names with new voices, hard breaks with softer contours. His own 'Living Real' opens the collection with echoing vocal trails and crisp percussive rolls, while Denham Audio's 'Be Sweet To Me' offers a sweet-and-sour blend of hardcore tension and wistful pads. Review: Vegyn flips Moon Safari inside out, running Air's 1998 debut through his distinct anoxia of gauzy electronics and fleet rhythm. After tide blurring work with Frank Ocean and Travis Scott, Joe Thornalley approaches the source material not as a sacred object, but as raw clay to reshape, stretching melodies, reframing grooves, twisting moods.
