Meditations On Integration
Review: After a one-off 45 turned up on Paul Murphy's desk, it didn't take long for Jazz Room to come calling. The result: a scorching double-header due for the end of June 2025, with Jungle Fire members at the controls. On the A-side, Sun Ra's 'Watusa' is reimagined as a driving Latin Afrosound workout, all percussion and propulsion, already picking up airplay on Gilles Peterson's BBC 6 Music show. Flip it and you'll find a deep-grooving take on Charles Mingus' 'Meditations On Integration', funked-up but still meditative, a bold recut of a classic.

JHS Pedals 3 Series Harmonic Trem Effects Pedal JHS Pedals 3 Series Harmonic Trem Effects Pedal

Tremolo pedal combining affordability and simplicity with high quality effects.
Notes: The JHS Pedals 3 Series is a collection of pedals designed to give you affordability and simplicity without compromising quality. Each 3 Series pedal is made by us in Kansas City, MO, using high-quality parts, quality control, and attention to every detail. Each pedal has three simple controls and one toggle that offer a wide range of sounds, perfect for beginners and professionals alike. The JHS 3 Series will inspire your playing and help you explore new sounds at a totally approachable price point.

In 1960, Leo Fender introduced a circuit in his Bandmaster and Vibrasonic amps called the Harmonic Tremolo. Essentially, the amp's signal was split into high frequency and low frequency components, with the output switching back and forth between the two, resulting in a dreamy effect similar to the Uni-Vibe. The 3 Series Harmonic Trem allows you to utilize Leo Fender's revolutionary effect in a package much easier to tote than a vintage amplifier. Toggle up is a great sounding amp trem, while toggle down is our take on harmonic trem effect.

Review: On their second album Desperado, the Eagles went deep into the idea of the American Wild West. With their country twang, Glenn Frey and Don Henley's songs were already cowboy-friendly, but this album took the concept further. Released in 1973, it captures everything you love about the Eagles from shit-kickin' rock n' roll like 'Out of Control' facing off with sentimental classic 'Tequila Sunrise'. After all this time it's the title track which remains one of the band's most beloved songs - everything a lonesome man on the prairie needs to hear after a hard day and a hoedown.

Review: In the music business the thinking often goes that first week sales are an indicator of a release's popularity and after that it's downhill from there. Occasionally, however, bands or solo artists write tunes with a pan-generational power to connect. Hugely popular Coventry band The Enemy have done that with the title track to this raucous indie guitar cracker of a debut album - originally released in 2007, and going straight to number one in the UK. 'We'll Live And Die In These Towns' has been adopted by the Coventry City football club as their unofficial anthem and is regularly sung with fervor by fans before matches. There's more emotion emanating from the stands when it's sung than the national anthem. It's a song of the people - as important as Billy Bragg's 'A New England'. This track sits as a high point in a tracklist that's no slouch on rabble-rousing hits throughout and it's a reminder of why The Enemy are a national treasure to so many.

Review: Van Halen's 1984 remains a seminal record in the history of rock music, marking a significant pivot in both the band's sound and its broader influence on the genre. Released in a year crowded with iconic albums from heavyweights like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Bon Jovi, 1984 stood out with its innovative use of synthesisers, a bold move for a band traditionally known for its hard-hitting guitar-driven rock. This sonic shift, spearheaded by Eddie Van Halen's exploration of keyboards, made the album both controversial and groundbreaking, with 'Jump' becoming a defining anthem of the era. The album kicks off with the brief, synth-driven title track that transitions seamlessly into 'Jump,' a song that introduced a new layer of polish to Van Halen's sound without sacrificing the energy or fun that defined their earlier work. Despite initial resistance from die-hard fans, 'Jump' became the band's most commercially successful song, balancing Eddie's keyboard experimentation with David Lee Roth's larger-than-life vocals. Following 'Jump', the album dives back into more familiar territory with tracks like 'Panama' and 'Hot For Teacher', showcasing the signature blistering guitar riffs and infectious rhythms that put Van Halen on the map. 'Panama' is an explosive rocker, with crunching guitars and Roth's unmistakable charisma, while 'Hot For Teacher' opens with one of the most recognizable drum intros in rock history. The band's chemistry is on full display, combining wild guitar solos, booming bass lines, and energetic vocals. Deeper cuts like 'Top Jimmy' and 'Drop Dead Legs'' are often overshadowed by the big singles but still highlight the band's dynamic range. 'I'll Wait', with its atmospheric production and introspective tone, stands as one of the more unique entries in the Van Halen catalog, blending ghostly vocal effects with the band's pop sensibilities. Produced by Ted Templeman, 1984 strikes a delicate balance between the more polished sound of mainstream rock and the band's rough, raw origins. The album's commercial success, aided by MTV and the rise of music videos, cemented Van Halen's place in the pantheon of rock greats. Even 40 years after its release, 1984 sounds fresh, an enduring testament to Van Halen's ability to innovate without losing their core identity. Whether it's the flashy guitar solos, Roth's exuberant vocal performances, or the bold use of synthrs, 1984 captures a band at the peak of their powers, pushing boundaries while staying true to their rock 'n' roll spirit.

Review: Hip hop super group Run The Jewels aka Brooklyn-based rapper-producer El-P and Atlanta-based rapper Killer Mike continue to turn out new albums that continue to get a great reception. But at the same time, their old albums are still much sought after and so are being reissued. Run The Jewels 2 first came back in 2014 and received widespread acclaim from critics. They appreciated its darker, more layered production and Killer Mike and El-P's lyricism and chemistry and its guest contributions from the likes of Zach de la Rocha, Travis Barker and Diane Coffee.

Review: The original 'High Voltage' first appeared on TNT, AC/DC's second Australian LP, detonated in December 1975. It's not on the earlier High Voltage album, despite the title overlap: a quirk that's confused fans of the Sydney heavy metal stars ever since, and which sometimes serves as a litmus for fans real and false. Written by Angus and Malcolm Young with Bon Scott, 'High Voltage' is a mission statement: loud, bratty and proudly anti-establishment. Bon howls about letting loose and cranking amps, while the band churns through a stripped-down stomp built for beer-soaked venues and zero subtlety. When Atlantic recompiled tracks for the international High Voltage release in 1976, this was one of only two songs lifted from TNT, giving the rest of the world a taste of what Australian fans already knew: this was a band that would never waver on their scorched-earth riff policy.

Known for his meticulous production style and command of harmony - honed across a sprawling solo career and early work with Sugar Babe - Yamashita brings a studio-sheen to both classic standards and originals. This reissue arrives as part of the Moon Vinyl Collection, which spans six albums from his Moon Records years: 1983 to 1993. It notably includes the English-language version of 'Christmas Eve', the slow-burn ballad and quiet sleeper hit in Japan's holiday canon.

Review: Jamie xx's In Colour gets an anniversary reissue here, and a worthy one it is too. First released in 2015, marked his first solo full-length after years of producing with The xx. It's a sharp, brilliantly constructed album born out of UK club culture, pirate radio, and late-night London streets. Tracks like 'Gosh' hit straight out of the blocks, with chopped samples building the tension, while the gorgeous 'Loud Places' provides a breathtaking moment of unfettered emotion (and simultaneously directs a whole new generation to the wonders of Idris Muhammad's 'Could Heaven Ever Be Like This'). Then there's 'I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)' - a curveball that works, loose and bright without losing the thread. Jamie's skill lies in how precisely everything's placed, but there's enough soul to ensure the music doesn't come off clinical. It's warm, physical, and clearly built by someone who's spent time listening closely (to grime, garage, jungle, and everything in between). Ten years on, it still holds up as one of the strongest statements from the post-dubstep era.

Review: Schiller responds to a turbulent world with a widescreen embrace of serenity and light. Euphoria is the latest album from the long-running German electronic project helmed by Christopher von Deylen, and comes in the form of a lush, cinematic blend of ambient textures and propulsive rhythms. This is music made to uplift and sooth, not disenfranchise and unnerve (as so much other media is poised to do). As well as the main album, this Premium Deluxe Edition bundles in the live recording 'Sommerlust Live At The Baltic Sea', plus a Blu-ray containing two Dolby Atmos concert films: the Berlin performance from Schiller's 'Illuminate' arena tour, and the orchestral reworking of his breakthrough album Weltreise, recorded with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony. It all comes housed in a 40-page art book, with photography and behind-the-scenes notes on exactly how the record came to life.

Review: Tokyo-born violinist Hiroki Tamaki channels the spiritual teachings of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh into a quietly visionary LP, originally issued in 1983 and now reissued for the first time. Working with synth maestro Fumitaka Anzai, Tamaki creates a meditative fusion of layered vocals, shimmering electronics and devotional folk minimalism. ‘Kawa’ and ‘Sora’ offer hushed melodic gestures and ambient texture, while ‘Mahamudra No Shi’ leans towards prog-folk with swirling spoken word and swelling strings. ‘Beautiful Song’, featured on Nippon Acid Folk 1970–1980, retains its status as a cult classic—its mix of cosmic harmony and gentle psychedelia setting the tone for ‘Ai’ and the synth-rich ‘Meditation’. Closing piece ‘Umi’ floats through misty resonance, sealing a record that feels like a private mantra, ritualistic yet human. Quietly stunning and spiritually charged, this is Tamaki at his most free and focused.

Review: Released relatively early on the summer of 1971, Demon & Eleven Children marked Tokyo acid casbah rockers Blues Creation's first outing with entirely original material, coming squarely at the moment they decided to pivot from Chicago blues homage to fuzz-screechy proto-metal. With an signature Epiphone Riviera electric and home-modified amp rig, they'd tap into a molten, unhinged energy, observing the Sabbath and/or inviting comparisons to a Yardbirds free-for-all. 'Atomic Bombs Away' and 'Brane Baster' pull title inspiration from pro wrestling, while 'Mississippi Mountain Blues' and the woozier 'Sorrow' anchor the record in more recognisable blues tropes. Recorded in a burst just before their Carmen Maki collab, Takeda now calls the record "so innocent" it makes him wince - but we have to disagree.

Review: We Release Jazz proudly purr-loins Hiroshi Suzuki's jazz-fusion-funk gem Cat, first recorded in 1975 and released in 76. With liner notes by Edo jazz critic Teruo Isono, the scene is painted in vivid detail: after moving to LV in 1971 to record with Buddy Rich, Suzuki returned to Japan for a two-day session at Nippon Columbia. What he'd learned from Rich stuck to him like sticky viscidia, resulting in a smooth cross-pollination, spotlighting Suzuki's trombone and Takeru Muraoka's saxophone: this tomcat's territory had been assuredly marked. A prized find among jazz collectors and lofi beat remakers alike, Cat sits alongside Ryo Fukui's Scenery as a supernovaic classic of Japanese jazz.

Review: In the 70s, Hiromasa Suzuki's synthfluence knew few bounds. A key architect of 70s jazz, the keyboardist's seventh LP High Flying heard him heighten his parabola, enlisting a killer ensemble including Jiro Inagaki, Jun Fukamachi, Shuichi Murakami and Kayoko Ishu to produce a dense cyclorama of cosmic funk and jazz fusion. Suzuki's arrangements are restless and daring, with opener 'High Flying' leading the way through pearly angelics and attention-grabbing title sequence vocals, before clincher bodyworkers like 'Screwdriver', 'Smash' and 'Out Of Focus' pitch heady reprogrammable synth patches against fiery rhythm sections. Having then already shaped defining moments for Terumasa Hino and Akira Ishikawa, Suzuki here pushed even further. Pressed and printed in Japan, and with due respect to original intent, no digital release planned.

Review: A high-gloss Abbey Road remaster and LITA reissue brings Masayoshi Takanaka's kaleidoscopic The Rainbow Goblins the treatment it deserves. Originally released in 1981 as his seventh studio album, it's one of the Toyko jazz fuser's most eccentric works, riffing on Ul De Rico's surrealist children's book of the same name (and with an allusive accompanying illustration). The result is a prog-fusion fantasia thick with swirling guitar lines and orchestral flourishes, reissued here on 180g clear purple vinyl to mirror the dreamlike palette of the sleeve. This edition forms part of a trio of remastered classics, alongside T-Wave and Alone, also cut at Abbey Road by Alex Wharton.

Review: On Humanise, Australian-in-London HAAi digs into themes of technology, humanity, and connection, blending electronic soundscapes with deep emotional undercurrents. The standout track, 'Satellite', captures the essence of the album, with glitchy textures and anthemic energy, featuring Jon Hopkins, Obi Franky, ILA, and TRANS VOICES. The song is a celebration of community and the power of human connection in a world increasingly dominated by screens. Following on from 2022's excellent Baby, We're Ascending, the new album sees HAAi revel in collaboration, bringing in voices from Alexis Taylor, KAM-BU, James Massiah, and a pair of choirs. The result is a mix of evocative rhythms and powerful lyrics that reflect a changing world. Every track feels purposeful, building on the album's theme of reclaiming humanity in a digital age.

'Kick It Off' begins with a heavyweight bump, trippy synth motifs and rigid rhythms that make you jerk your body in an 80s Chicago style. 'After Acid Hours' is another full body workout with wiggly 303s adding the energy and 'Ough Yeah' then gets snappy and sweaty with its fractured vocals and strobe-lit moods. 'Beat Body' shuts down with a more slamming technoid energy and rugged acid. Four stylish, fresh and destructive sounds.

Review: The first part of this wonderful new album from Mexican pair Destino Sonido aka a new coming together of veteran Juan Soto and new school vocal talent Labibe, got us well and truly hot under the collar. Part 2 now drops in quick succession and is another summer-ready blend of disco, funk, synth wave and hooky pop. 'Ardiente' is percussive, hip-swinging magic, 'Night Creatures' brings more driving grooves with withering sci-fi melodies and 'Destino Sonido' has sleek synth bass and Donna Summer vibes, while Disco 86 ups the cosmic energy with a fine remix. 'Somos Espacio' comes as lush ambient then chugging Italo, and elsewhere Matt FX brings a nice deep house rework to close.

Review: Japanese composer, musician, producer and sound designer Akira Yamaoka returns to Silent Hill with a revised score for the 2024 remake of the series' most enduring entry. This new selection, released via Laced Records, reframes the original's stark minimalism through a more sculpted, textural palette. Yamaoka draws on the same core elements i trip-hop breaks, distorted guitar, low-end ambience, but shifts the emphasis toward layered production and sustained tension. The industrial motifs now feel more granular. Field recordings and musique concrete techniques surface across tracks, forming unease not through volume but pacing. Rather than a direct update the soundtrack plays like a parallel work. 'Promise (Reprise)' and 'Theme of Laura' retain their structure but show restraint in performance and mix. Newer pieces lean into atmosphere over motif, offering less thematic clarity but deeper immersion. For longtime listeners, the changes may feel understated but the logic behind them is consistent. As with the game, familiarity is refracted rather than repeated. The result is a score that sits in conversation with its predecessor rather than replacing it.

Theme Of Laura (Laura's Emotions)
Review: Akira Yamaoka's sprawling, meticulously reimagined soundtrack for the 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2 finds the Japanese composer returning to his iconic score with renewed intensity and ambition. Across six vinyl LPs, Yamaoka completely reworks and expands his original vision, fusing trip-hop, industrial rock, musique concrete, and dark ambience into a haunting sonic tapestry. Familiar themesisuch as the iconic 'Theme Of Laura (Laura's Emotions)' and the chilling piano rework on 'Laura Plays The Piano (2024)'iemerge transformed, their familiar motifs drifting through layers of distorted textures, spectral synths, and disquieting percussion. Pieces like 'Phantasmagoria', 'Angel's Thanatos & Celestial Peaper', and 'The Cry Of The Nurse' amplify the sense of psychological horror, while quieter cuts ('Promise (Pragma Version)', 'Echoes Of Silence', 'Cinderella Music Box') introduce fragile melodic moments amid the oppressive tension. Rather than merely revisiting past glories, Yamaoka elevates the soundtrack into an ambitious work that holds up as a standalone listening experience, capturing both the psychological depth of Silent Hill and his own evolution as a composer. This definitive vinyl editionicarefully curated by Yamaoka himselfiis an essential immersion for fans, offering a hypnotic, unsettling, and ultimately profound journey into the darkest reaches of the psyche.

Review: Excitingly, we find London producer and pianist Alfa Mist now build a speculative world, where reincarnation becomes a societal fault line: Roulette is the now well chartered artist's sixth LP (if you're counting last year's King's Place LP) and could well be his artistic vertex so far. A concept suite, there are 15 tracks, each taking up a distinct voice or vantage point asking varying questions of power, memory and the ethics of knowledge. Still present are Alfa's expressive, modal keys and his ease with jazz improvisation as a means to interrogate philosophy's big questions. But now the sound is draped in disinhibited psychedelia sceneries and fractured timings, and 'Roulette', the eight-minute centrepiece, is emblematic of this enough, skirting through tempo shifts. "Music is a constant," he says - the rest is in flux.

Review: Alfa Mist returns with Roulette, his sixth full-length and perhaps his most structurally ambitious to date. Since his self-released debut Nocturne in 2015, the East Londoner's music has downed a quiet but reverential anchor in UK jazz, blending hip-hop instincts with a modal jazz bedrock. Now, however, Roulette hears him both enshroud himself and part reemerge from the Mist, putting forward a subtle social critique yet veiled in a wordless narrative, with every abstract metaphysic from reincarnation to behaviourism and human power cycles invoked. The playing is as fluid and spacious as always, but now the tempo shifts more than ever, jarring like cuts in a reel of film. 'Cycles' or 'Tension' further press against the edges of songform. True to the title, and true to life, you're never quite sure in which bay your ball is going to land.

Review: Kyntral is a co-founder of the so-far so-sophisticated Argentinian label Danza Nativa and he serves up a deeply immersive trip here. 'Inner Depths' is liquid deep techno in the mould of Neel or Donato Dozzy. Percolating rhythms and dubby undercurrents subsume mind and body while deft little details place you underwater. 'Bloodstone' is a little more lumpy with gentle smattering of percussion of drums that bump. 'Ancient Apparition' is a spacious sound with wispy pads disappearing to infinity, glassy tinkles and undulating drums all getting you into a meditative state. The Patrick Russell Phantom remix is more warped and dark to add a nice counterpoint.

Review: Roberta Flack's version of 'Killing Me Softly With His Song' stands as a defining moment in soul and jazz, where vulnerability and poise collide. The track's power lies in its simplicityiFlack's warm, restrained delivery brings a sense of intimacy to every note, drawing the listener in with a kind of quiet intensity. The surrounding tracks showcase her exceptional ability to weave storytelling into melody, each song carrying its own emotional weight without ever feeling overdone. Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul

Review: The third studio release from Georgia-born vocalist Otis Redding captures one of soul's most transcendent voices hitting his stride. Recorded at Stax in Memphis with the label's legendary house band, the LP blends Redding originals like 'Respect' and 'I've Been Loving You Too Long' with impassioned reinterpretations of songs by Sam Cooke, B.B. King, the Rolling Stones, and more. Backed by Booker T. & the M.G.'s and the Memphis Horns, Redding delivers performances that are raw, urgent and unmistakably Southern - his voice rising from pain to exultation in a single breath. 'Ole Man Trouble' opens in a mood of wounded resolve, while 'Change Gonna Come' channels Cooke's civil rights sorrow with a gut-punching tenderness. 'Shake' and 'Satisfaction' bristle with brassy energy, offering a grittier counterpoint to their original versions. Despite being largely composed of covers, every track is transformed by Redding's vocal phrasing and the band's immaculate drive. What results is a tight, 30-minute lesson in Southern soul, uniting gospel, blues and r&b into something wholly its own. It remains one of the most complete studio expressions of Redding's short but seismic career - a benchmark of the genre and a defining record of the 60s.

Review: In newly audible, shimmering detail, Stone Temple Pilots' second LP (1994) marked a shift from the rawness of their pilot album Core toward tighter songwriting and broader sonic reach, layer-caking their readily established grunge sound in starker progressions and clearer Southern gothic baritones from Scott Weiland. 'Vasoline', 'Big Empty' and 'Interstate Love Song' still hit hard, yet deeper cuts like 'Pretty Penny', 'Lounge Fly' and 'Silvergun Superman' reveal the album's layered charm. Only 47 minutes long, but full of unexpected sonic flourishes, it's now rediscovered in 45rpm form, thanks to Analogue Productions, compared to whom few do it better.

Review: After the relative commercial un-success of their debut Whole Oats, Hall & Oates relocated to the Big Apple to record 1973's Abandoned Luncheonette, marking the start of their New York chapter, which perhaps artistically expressed their own debutant dismay. Produced by Arif Mardin, and in a rightly disgruntled fashion, the duo sought to distance themselves from commercial formulae, honing a unique sound that would later prove non-fungible. Keeping close to the pair's American roots, Mardin played a crucial role, and under his guidance, H&O would call the production process a vital learning experience. The second side of the record is notable for its guitarist Chris Bond's Beatles-inspired ideas, which he would later express as a regretful choice, as it deviated substantially from H&O's vision. But this is an overall "magical" record, as expressed by the duo themselves.

Review: Arthur Fiedler's long tenure with the Boston Pops produced a vast archive of recordings, many leaning into fan-serving territory, but this collection proves the orchestra's range extended far beyond light classical fare. Here, Prokofiev's 'Three Oranges Suite' gets a full wax treatment, moving well beyond its often-isolated 'March' into the suite's other vivid vignettes. The rearrangement of 'Les Sylphides' tiptoes between charm and kitsch, while Liszt's symphonic poems receive unexpectedly muscular renderings. 'Mazeppa' bursts with theatric flair, while 'Les Preludes' is approached with drive and precision, opposing overcooked symbolism. Fiedler's flair for drama never came at the expense of control, and this set captures a conductor who bridged populism and classical heft with confidence.

Review: Genesis' 1983 release begins with an ominous whisper, 'Mama', where Phil Collins channels something unnerving-part confession, part menace-set against sparse, mechanical drum programming. The track crescendos into a searing release, its layers of synths and percussion driving home a deep unease. If 'Mama' is the ghost in the machine, 'That's All' is the human touch: deceptively light, yet built on intricate layers of melody and rhythm that reveal the band's refined craftsmanship. The album balances pop accessibility with progressive roots. 'Second Home by the Sea', a two-part suite, showcases their knack for storytelling through instrumental drama, while 'Illegal Alien' mixes humour with commentary in a way that still provokes discussion. For fans of lush, introspective ballads, 'Taking It All Too Hard' offers a poignant standout moment. This reissue captures Genesis at a pivotal point, straddling their experimental past and chart-topping future. A must-have for fans exploring the evolution of a genre-defining band.

From 'Welcome to My Nightmare', listeners are plunged into a dark fantastical nether-realm, with added orchestration lending Cooper's craft a Burtonesque grim like never before. In collaboration with longtime producer Bob Ezrin, Cooper impelled many memorable spirits here, naturally forming the sonic backbone of the eponymous, accompanying concert film (1975) produced by David Winter. The album's breakout hit, 'Only Women Bleed', reached the Top 5 and played a major role in propelling Welcome to My Nightmare to multi-platinum status.

Review: Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is Alanis Morissette's ambitious follow-up to 1995's mega-hit Jagged Little Pill. Released November 3, 1998, the album defied expectations and avoided the easy path of imitation and in instead, Morissette dove deeper into introspection, spiritual growth and lyrical vulnerability. With eclectic production blending rock, Eastern influences and hip-hop grooves, the album reflects the sound of a maturing artist embracing complexity. Songs like 'Front Row' and 'Thank U' reflect her evolving voice which is less angry, more self-aware yet still fearless. This bold, personal work solidified Morissette's artistic identity beyond her already proven commercial success.

Review: Though internationally recognised now, few casual listeners will know about the Black Eyed Peas' debut album Behind The Front, released in 1998 via Interscope and will.i.am Music Group. Leaning heavily on demo material first intended for their unreleased Grass Roots project, the addition of Taboo helped sharpen their sound into a laid-back, live-instrument-driven take on conscious hip-hop, with 'Joints & Jam' and 'Karma' drawing nods from film soundtracks and video rotation alike. Despite the low-key rollout, the album stood apart for its jazz-informed grooves and anti-glitz stance, with early versions of 'Fallin' Up' and 'Head Bobs' laying a smooth patio for their future switch to global pop dominance. To serve as an indication of their stylistic change over the years, it remains the only BEP album issued with a Parental Advisory sticker until Masters Of The Sun Vol 1.

Review: Genesis' 1976 album represents a pivotal moment for the band, blending intricate jazz/fusion elements with their signature progressive rock style. The SACD release highlights the nuanced interplay among members, delivering stunning clarity to Phil Collins' dynamic drumming and Mike Rutherford's sophisticated bass lines. Tracks like 'Dance on a Volcano' showcase the band's energy, with Steve Hackett's guitar evoking vivid imagery against Tony Banks' layered keyboards. 'Entangled' and 'Mad Man Moon' stand out for their delicate, introspective tones, featuring acoustic guitars and emotive vocals from Collins, whose voice brings a heartfelt authenticity to the material. The intricate use of mellotron, especially on 'Los Endos' and the latter half of 'Entangled,' adds a lush, choral atmosphere. 'Ripples' emerges as one of Genesis' finest moments, its nostalgic beauty underscored by shimmering 12-string guitars and majestic instrumental passages. Meanwhile, 'Squonk' delivers a rhythmic punch, marking a turning point where Collins proved his mettle as both drummer and vocalist. With its varied compositions and instrumental brilliance, the album bridges the theatrical style of earlier works with a more cohesive and music-centric approach. The SACD release ensures these performances resonate more vibrantly than ever, cementing its place as one of the band's definitive achievements.

Review: German producer and singer-songwriter Monolink recants the former downtreads of Under Darkening Skies (2021) with The Beauty Of It All. Where he once durst explore ideas of human overshoot and dread, this latest record lifts its predecessor's burden, now reflecting impermanence, connection, and the raw edges of joy and pain. Made in the tranquility of rural Germany, 'Mesmerized' and 'Powerful Play' take after the immersive gesture of his live shows, extracting an ever-deepening clarity from his already organic progressive house delectus.

Review: Ray Charles stands at the crossroads of 20th-century music i born in Georgia and raised in Florida, he emerged from the Jim Crow South not just as a titan of rhythm and blues but as a shape-shifting interpreter who redefined genre boundaries by sheer force of personality. On this early landmark, his voice is the instrument i bold, broken and utterly assured. The first half pairs him with a brass-soaked big band stacked with Basie and Ellington sidemen; 'Let the Good Times Roll' and 'It Had to Be You' swing with a mischievous, winking power, while 'Two Years of Torture' is pure stage-lit agony, with Charles unflinching in the spotlight. The second half turns orchestral, lush but never polite i 'You Won't Let Me Go' and 'Come Rain or Come Shine' turn show tunes into prayer, soul bleeding through every note. Charles strips these standards of their Broadway polish and threads them through lived-in phrasing, delivered from the gut. It's a feat that would shape his catalogue for decades, but rarely with this much risk or reward.

Review: Keeping to a sadomasochistic touring schedule - juggling the dates of which with album releases between 1974 and 1977 - Bad Company were in sore need of a break following the completion of their fourth LP, Burnin' Sky. After two years, they made their return on March 17, 1979, with their fifth studio album Desolation Angels, named after the Jack Kerouac beatnik classic of the same name. A 10-track collection of blues-influenced rock was met with strong chart performance, proving that even amid the rise of punk and new wave, Bad Company's signature sound still had significant appeal. The album's standout track, 'Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy', became a gold-selling single, while tracks like 'Gone, Gone, Gone', 'Lonely for Your Love' and 'She Brings Me Love' emboldened the vocal prowess of lead larynx Paul Rodgers. The album sports a relatively polished production sheen compared to Burnin' Sky, suggesting renewal after disenchantment.

Review: The fourth studio release from US country rock giants Crosby, Stills & Nash, released in 1982, marked a period of reflection and renewal for the American trio, shaped by their diverse backgrounds: David Crosby's West Coast roots, Stephen Stills' Texan upbringing and Graham Nash's British perspective. Their signature harmonies and seasoned craftsmanship come through with the project largely built from prior recordings between Stills and Nash in 1980 and 1981. What began as a duo effort was ultimately enhanced by Crosby's return that gave the tracks a fresh dynamic. The songs tap into familiar folk rock territory, but the album's highlights, like 'Wasted on the Way' (Nash reflecting on the consequences of personal squabbles) and 'Southern Cross' (Stills' reinterpretation of a Curtis brothers' track), explore the bittersweet nature of their turbulent past. Crosby's own contributionsiespecially 'Delta' and 'Might As Well Have a Good Time'iadd an intimate touch, weaving his signature harmonies with Stills and Nash's. With collaborators like Mike Finnigan and Art Garfunkel, the record embodies a sense of rebirth, while also introducing the band to the music video era with the MTV-friendly 'Southern Cross'. As they reckon with their past, the release captures their journey towards renewal, reaffirming their legacy while embracing change.

Review: In late 19th to early 20th Century Paris, operettas were the order of the day. Cologne-born composer-cellist Jacques Offenbach and Boston conductor Arthur Fielder were chief conceivers of this terse micro-musical form, defined in the loosest sense as a "light opera". Like novellas, operettas are shorter, lighter-hearted commedia, featuring the occasional satirical jibe. Offenbach came first; he and Fielder began their diachronic dialogue in earnest in 1954, when the latter's 1954 rendition of Gaîte Parisienne - a 1938 ballet featuring many an Offenbach operetta - became a beloved reinterpretation. This loyal commemoration by the Boston Pops Orchestra at the Boston Symphony Hall eulogises Offenbach's superb orchestrations once more, in what has been described as one of the best RCA recordings of all time.

Review: Originally released in 1958, and now reissued, was a stylistic change for Ray Charles. Departing from the gospel-infused r&b of his earlier Atlantic work, Charles grew into a lush, genre-blending approach that straddled a big band swing and string-laden balladry. Ray, 28 years old, this was already his sixth album of material. Now on SACD, a format known to be the most superior consumer format, we can all appreciate the intricate details of this landmark album. Side-A is a high-energy one, powered by arrangements from Quincy Jones and contributions from members of the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands. Tracks like 'Let the Good Times Roll', 'It Had to Be You' and 'A'exander's Ragtime Band' sparkle with swagger and sophistication. Charles's piano lines snake through the arrangements with soulful ease, unifying the jazz-driven ensemble with his distinctive r&b touch. Side-B turns more introspective, featuring Ralph Burns's rich orchestral arrangements. Here, Charles delivers haunting renditions of 'Just for a Thrill', 'You Won't Let Me Go', and the moving 'Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying'. His expressive phrasing and tender piano work bring emotional depth to each piece. The album concludes with a stirring take on 'Come Rain or Come Shine', arguably one of his greatest recorded performances. More than a recording of vocal talent, this album redefined what a soul artist could achieve within the framework of American popular music.

You Got It In Your Soulness
The Generation Gap
Review: One of soul jazz's most electrifying live recordings and a spontaneous triumph born from an unrehearsed, last-minute collaboration at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival. Pianist and vocalist Les McCann, alongside tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Baileyiwho had never played together beforeideliver an exuberant, groove-heavy set that captures the raw energy of the moment. Despite the lack of preparation, the chemistry between the musicians is undeniable and the resulting performance remains one of the most talked-about live jazz recordings. The set opens with 'Compared to What', McCann's politically charged anthem railing against Nixon and the Vietnam War, propelled by a relentless groove and impassioned vocals. The band locks into a deep pocket, with Harris and Bailey trading fiery, blues-inflected solos. 'Cold Duck Time' follows with an irresistible bounce, its bluesy vamp providing the perfect backdrop for extended improvisation. The mood shifts with 'Kathleen's Theme', where Harris takes center stage, exploring the melody with fluid grace before 'You Got It in Your Soulness' brings the session back to its gospel-infused roots, McCann's percussive piano stabs and Donald Dean's driving beat igniting the crowd. Decades later, Swiss Movement still exudes an infectious, unfiltered joyiproof that great jazz can thrive in the most unplanned circumstances. It's a high-spirited, deeply soulful document of musicians seizing the moment with dazzling results.

Review: Ryan Coogler's 2025 period horror epic gets a double-barrelled musical treatment courtesy of longtime collaborator Ludwig Goransson, who helms both a star-studded original soundtrack and an original score. The Swedish composer, now LA-based, grounds the first in deep, smoky blues and soul i recorded live with Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Hailee Steinfeld, Rod Wave and more i while the second is a sprawling instrumental suite full of spectral folk motifs and aching melodic fragments. Both releases came out the same day as the film in April 2025, via Sony Masterworks and Sony Classical respectively. From the soulful chug of 'This Little Light of Mine' and Rod Wave's moody title track, to the resonator-led gothic tension of 'Clarksdale Love' and 'Grand Closin'', the project fuses vintage fidelity with modern production flair. The musicianship is staggering throughout, captured across Royal Studios Memphis, Electric Lady in New York and more. Goransson's use of the same Dobro guitar carried by lead character Sammie Moore adds an uncanny weight to his score i the whole thing is textured, world-building work. This is Southern Gothic by way of jazz, blues, doom metal and chamber music i and a major release in both the soundtrack and score worlds.

Review: Genesis' double concept album from 1974 is a seraphic work, telling the surreal, mythic story of Rael, a Puerto Rican youth navigating a dreamlike New York City filled with bizarre characters and symbolism. Also Peter Gabriel's last album with Genesis, it marks the moment that the 'Solsbury Hill' singer left to pursue a solo career, thus curtailing the era of "progressive Genesis". Hailed as one of the most influential prog rock albums of all time, it exalts Genesis as early users of ambient, synth-driven moodscapes, which serve as transcendent backdrops for Rael's "ashy to classy" bildungsroman. As a Puerto Rican street kid embarks on an odyssey of personage, the album reaches a staunch climax in an archetypal castration scene. Also doubling as a live show in which Peter Gabriel donned grotesque costumes and leathery hides to represent Rael - not quite Broadway, but close - this new set comes complete with a 1975 tour programme reproduction, replica ticket, poster and a 60-page coffee table style book featuring rare images and new liner notes by Alexis Petridis.

Review: Genesis took a significant leap forward with the addition of Phil Collins and Steve Hackett to the lineup and this album showcases a perfect blend of bombastic keyboards, intricate melodies and imaginative storytelling. Opening with 'The Musical Box', a mini rock opera that fuses nursery rhyme influences with progressive rock grandeur, the album establishes itself as a classic. The heavy and menacing 'The Return of the Giant Hogweed' exemplifies the band's creative audacity, while 'For Absent Friends' offers a brief, gentle respite led by Collins' emotive vocals. 'Seven Stones' features one of the most iconic Mellotron solos, while 'The Fountain of Salmacis' presents a mythical tale with symphonic depth. 'Harold the Barrel' provides a brief, humorous interlude and 'Harlequin' offers a quaint but somewhat disposable moment. The record's strength lies in its balance of light and dark, with moments of beauty and power seamlessly intertwined. The album captures the band's transition from their early sound to a more ambitious, epic style, laying the groundwork for future masterpieces. It remains a cornerstone of progressive rock, showcasing Genesis at their imaginative best.

Review: Abacab remains an album that pulses with the energy of the early 80s, yet it carries a weight of reflection that anchors it beyond its time. The opening track sets a brisk pace, its driving rhythm section cutting through the dense layers of synths with a sense of urgency. 'No Reply at All' stands as one of the album's high points, with a funk-infused groove that is both unexpected and irresistible. As the album progresses, 'Dodo' takes a darker turn, blending prog-rock sensibilities with electronic textures, showing the band's ability to evolve while retaining their distinctive voice. Throughout, there's a sense of experimentationia willingness to push boundaries, to step away from their previous sound while staying true to their roots. Abacab showcases a band in transition, seamlessly fusing their past with the future they were stepping into.

Review: Genesis's 1981 album captures a pivotal moment in the band's evolution, where their progressive roots blend seamlessly with a sleek, radio-friendly sound that defined their 1980s identity. This album showcases the trio's ability to experiment while crafting accessible and compelling tracks. From the dynamic interplay of sharp guitar riffs and smooth organ tones on the title track to the infectious horn-driven groove of 'No Reply at All', Genesis proves their mastery of melody and rhythm. Tony Banks' 'Me and Sarah Jane' evokes the band's earlier prog days with its intricate layers, while 'Keep It Dark' and 'Dodo/Lurker' explore mechanical rhythms and multi-part suites. Phil Collins' heartfelt 'Man on the Corner' pairs poignant lyrics with electronic percussion and Mike Rutherford's 'Like It or Not' transitions beautifully from ballad to bold declaration. Closing with 'Another Record', the album leaves listeners with a punchy, rhythmic finale. Reissued on 180-gram vinyl with gatefold packaging, this edition enhances the listening experience, presenting the music with warmth and clarity. A significant chapter in Genesis's storied career, this album remains a testament to their innovation and adaptability.
