The importance of cleaning your vinyl records

Many people associate vinyl records with hearing "pops" and "clicks". In part, this is the charm of the medium but it should not get over the top of course. Unless your vinyl has scratches, these pops and clicks are caused by dust and dirt that has been collected in the grooves. Also, contamination by air pollution from the traffic outside, cooking fat, grease and tobacco smoke can cause a tough film to form on the surface of the record. Sometimes even moulds and fungi are present if the records have been stored for a prolonged period of time in a humid environment. If you play a dirty record, the stylus will scrape part of this dirt off the groove and this causes a thick build-up of grime on the stylus. Ultimately, this will result in complete miss tracking or groove skipping with permanent damage to your costly stylus and precious records.

The Tonar Wash & Dry is an all-in-one solution to clean your records in the most easy way. But why would you need to clean something you've literally just purchased? Nearly every new vinyl record is positively charged with static electricity. Notes: The newly developed Tonar Top Tip stylus cleaning Liquid with stylus lubricating additive is very easy and simple to use. It is a powerful cleaning solution that will detach all the dirt ad tough grime that your stylus collects from the record during play-back and result in a perfectly cleaned stylus surface.

The kit contains a bottle with the Top Tip cleaning and lubricating liquid. In the bottle top you will find an applicator brush that is used to wet the stylus brush. The kit also includes the Tonar clean tip carbon fibre stylus cleaning brush.

Instructions:

Unscrew the bottle top and apply one or two drops of liquid onto the Tonar cleantip brush. To clean the stylus tip brush the tip a few times with the brush. Careful! Always clean the tip from the back of the cartridge to the front of the cartridge only. Never brush back and forth as shown on the diagram. You do not have to remove the stylus the cartridge for cleaning.

Caution:

The fluid contains a low percentage of Iso-Propyl Alcohol. Keep out of reach of children.

Notes: The TonarTacky Cleaner uses a special grade of rubber elastomer that never loses its original surface tackiness. Just rolling it lightly over the record surface in straight lines is enough to remove dust and dirt trapped in the grooves. When the roller has become dirty it is easy to clean. Just remove from the holder and wash with a little bit of hand soap under the tap with water.

After drying the roller with a lint-free paper cloth it regains its original tackiness.

How to use

Snip off one corner of the sachet

Squeeze the contents about the playing surface of the record and distribute evenly using the index and middle fingers together in a gentle rubbing action

Include the lead in groove and exclude the lead out groove

Set aside to dry, around 3-4 hours depending on ambient temperature and relative humidity. Once the dried film is showing white streaks it will be dry

Peeling the dried film: using standard household adhesive tape, place an 11cm strip from the lead out groove to the edge. Lift the tape overhand and slowly peel the film. Any remnants can be removed by dabbing with a fresh piece of tape.

Notes: Secret Chord Analogue's Record Restore fluid is specially formulated to dissolve dust, dirt, grime, and binder substances commonly found in record grooves. The proprietary formula emulsifies and breaks down binders, including static electricity thereby releasing trapped impurities into a removable skin for a 100% clean. Specifically, Record Restore targets statically charged micro-particles, which if not neutralised will resist all efforts to remove them.
