Review: Bobby Barnes is 'Super High On Your Love' and you will be just as high on his gorgeous soul vocals. This 7" features two previously unreleased tracks from the vaults of Raina Records, booth of which are produced and arranged by Lewis Carroll. One is an unheard version from 1984 of 'I've Had My Share of Loving You', a sentimental, slow and smoochy song for late night lovers. The other is a lost recording from 1977 that is a real soul stepper. It's an instant classic thanks to the gorgeous backing harmonies and luxuriant string sounds.

Review: Visillusion Records boss Thomas Barnett has been thoroughly active on the scene since '87 and sheer longevity is enough to cement his name as a mainstay in the techno canon if the slew of techno bangers he's produced isn't enough. Barnett is unique, though, in that he made techno before it was even widely agreed to be called techno. These three new tracks for Exarde bring that genealogy along for the ride; they're full of trancey, space-age synths conjur images of flying cars and hologram video calls - a fitting cyberpunk audiovisual aesthetic that is befitting of the proto-techno magic Barnett has been making.

Review: Barnt returns for a weighty, new wavey three-tracker on Kompakt, not quite straying from his trademark minimal tech style, but nevertheless working in novel elements. 'This Is For The Decor Only' is a glistening ambient trance cut, working in detuned leads and melodic 'woahs' (woah indeed), while 'You Know What's Gone' recalls everything from mid-80s body music, new romantic dance, and medieval music. 'Fan' is the ambient closer, revealing the producer's musical talents far beyond that of mere dance music. As Barnt says, he wanted to touch on a "ceremonial, emotional, grand spirit", and he's achieved just that.

Review: Speicher 125 is the upcoming split EP by German producers and DJs Barnt and Michael Mayer, forming part of the Speicher series, one of Kompakt's many V/A serials. This is music for peaktime dancefloor servicing; 'Teller' and 'Duration' are minimal, intense hooverers, reminiscent of later DJ Koze tracks and/or film soundtrack techno. The B, too, comes in true Barnt style, throwing organic bells and knocks into a beguiling mix.

Review: Stevie Wonder's 'Pastime Paradise' has thus far been less recognised as an original soul wonderwork, and more so as a sample by American rapper Coolio on the derivative 'Gangster's Paradise'. Though still having been covered by many artists over the years, Major Keys records highlights this enduring 1981 cover of Wonder's 'Paradise' by Latin percussionist Ray Barretto as among their favourites, if not their absolute favourite. Now the label reissue the gem, flaunting its up-to-date, nigh timeless feel; it's the opposite of a miracle that this has never before been released on a 12" single record, despite the fact that it is a favourite on the floors of jazz and soul rooms the world over. It also flips it with Barretto's own 'La Cuna' and 'Mambotango', taken from the same 1981 LP.

Review: Italian label Spittle have launched their new Dependance sub label to champion all things Italo, and they're following up on reissues of Zed's 'Plastic Love' and Trophy's 'Slow Flight' with this gem from fabled Italian DJ and producer Massimo Barsotti. Originally released in 1983 on Alexander Robotnick's Fuzz Dance label, we're absolutely treated to a peak Italo version of Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love', which takes the original and runs with it in the best possible way. As well as the original we get the killer 'W.L.L.' version excursion on the flip, which rocks out just as hard.

Review: The Dutch techno veteran Bart Skils is back with another impressive release on the mighty Drumcode. 'Horsepower' is a relentless peak-time techno track that is sure to captivate dance floors and have the crowd moving with its chugging energy. It builds steadily, leading to an epic breakdown before unleashing the full power of its steely groove, making it perfect for those heads-down moments in the main room. On the B-side, 'Sunshine In The Dust' takes a more straightforward and functional approach with its variety of female vocal parts, catchy bongo drums, and a sexy horn sound. Review: With a career reaching back some 20 years, Bart Skils has remained committed to the art of the techno 12", with not a single album to his name. Instead, his focus has been on a staggering hit list of legendary labels from Pure Plastic to 100% Pure, Break New Soil, and since 2012, primarily Drumcode. As part of Adam Beyer's core contingent he's played a major part in shaping the sound of the label, and so he continues on this exemplary two-tracker. 'Roll The Dice' is a muscular yet lean workout for the bigger kinds of spaces, playing around with some monotonal vocal threads and laying down the b-line throb you expect from a Drumcode A side. The flip offers something a little different as 'Into The Clouds' takes some looped guitar licks as a vessel for transcendence, atop a steady trucking techno undercarriage, of course.

Review: Warehouse Music boss Mello Dee doesn't muck around when making his robust, wall rattling house tunes. This time around he tackles a big Basement Jaxx tune and reworks it to his own powerful ends. 'Red Alert' (Mella Dee Panel Beater mix) has gigantic drums and edgy synth loops with the original's ionic vocals loop to insanity over the top. It's pure fire. On the flip, the Mella Dee Holding On mix is more dubby and grainy, with just as heavy drums but a little more movement and no vocal, instead just straight up dance floor action.

Review: Eclectic technoizer Basic Bastard locks arms with Detroiter Orlando Voorn, their dual sonic output being the new 'Drama' EP. The three-tracker is nothing short of a sonic adventure, spanning acid, to dub, to uncategorisable entrainments. Bastard's original 'Drama' nails the art of the acid loop, a tricky tactic that is much less masterable than one might think. Voorn remixes the track my miring its elements in a cruddy ambience, while also greedily occupying the entire B-side with the urban-hellish jazz-noise-house cut 'Survival'.

The Perth, Australia has always got grooves at the heart of his tunes and this offering is no different. 'Closed Gateway' kicks off with a sense of serene synth craft and crisp drum work before 'Exit Strategy' slows right down to leggy, slow-motion loops and dub swagger. Review: Serious disco business here from Felix Bastedos. He may not have been born in wedlock but he sure knows his way around an edit. Two pretty obscure cuts here get Bastedized: on the A we have 'Anywhere You Want To Go', a big old heavy disco funk groove with plenty of switches and surprises along the way. Review: This 2024 edition marks the return of Joe Bataan, via the same track that made his name in 2004. Vampi Soul first welcomed the Latin Soul king to the label two decades back, facilitating the release of his 2005 album Call My Name. The pre-release singles for the album were 'Chick-A-Boom' and 'Cycles Of You', packed onto a single 7"; these quickly became DJs' favourites and have thus since remained long out of print. As it was twenty years ago, 'Chick-A-Boom' is a simultaneously upbeat but ghostly track, with Bataan's vocals quadrupling up in a wall of sound while providing the vibe equivalent of a Jackie Chan flick. 'Call My Name', meanwhile, goes heavy on the clavichord and synth whistle, as Bataan revels in a funereal theme, dancing, thundersticking into the great beyond.

Review: 'Funky Soul' - a 1970 single from New Orleans band David Batise & The Gladiators - rose to prominence in the 1990s thanks to its inclusion on several high-profile funk compilations, before finding further success thanks to a Breakestra cover in the early 2000s. Ahead of a new collection of unheard cuts from the southern funk band, Family Groove records has decided to reissue it. In it's A-side 'Part 1' form, the track is a killer instrumental funk workout rich in razor-sharp guitar licks, weighty bass, crunchy drum breaks and hazy horns (the arrangement of which was provided by Isaac Hayes). Arguably even more frantic and energetic is the flipside 'Part 2' take, whose call-and-response vocals were a familiar feature of the band's popular live shows.

Review: Batu has proven himself hugely capable of making a wide range of music. He might be best known for his perfect techno designs but here delves further into the world of ambient. Across four tracks he explores a number of moods with painterly synth work that is detailed with gentle percussion, gorgeous keys, and in the case of 'Flown,' jazzy splashes of cymbal. 'Half Speed' is idk a slow awakening on a distant planet. 'The Fifth' brings more bright and energy synth motifs and 'Seams' is a soothing lullaby. A beautifully escapist listen.

Review: The Bayara Citizens dropped the original 'Ju/Ru Music' 7" on Joe Clausell's Sacred Rhythm label back in 2006. It has become a rather pricey little 45 prm that now gets reissued as two different, dubbed out Afro rhythms with swirling guitar licks. The Afrikan Art opener on the a-side is full of sunshine and Latin vibes thanks to the superbly plucked strings and shuffling groves, while the flip is the Afrikan dub Drum Drums version - darker, more percussive more moody. Both sides bring something different to any dub set.

Review: Dutch label High Fashion always deals in house music at the more funky and accessible end of the spectrum. It's got a few decent remix EPs dropping right now and this is one of them with the one and only Michael Grey at the buttons. He brings his famously catchy synth loops and warm, irresistible bassline to plenty of well chopped vocals. His first remix of 'Genie' is a real vocal belter with mid tempo drums and 80s synths and the dub strips things back a little to allow the grooves to shine.

Review: The ever vital Boogie Back has another pearler on its hands here. This 7" is an SOS Band influenced double header produced by Ernie McKone, with Cheri Maree on the vocals. Firstly, 'Time Waits' pairs nice analogue drum work and big, pixelated chords straight from the 80s. It's a sugar sweet tune with a buttery smooth vocal that will get those rumps wiggling. Flip it over and you will find 'Is It You', a more slow and sentimental tune with splashy chords and bendy bass. The vibe is steamy and romantic, with the sort of tempting groove that you won't be able to resist.

Review: After a 14-year absence, early '90s jazz-funk and street soul label Boogie Back Records returned to action last year which a superb slab of revivalist boogie from Cheri Maree. Here the London-based imprint continues in a similar vein via a fresh two-track "45" from in-house crew BB Soul and honey-voiced vocalist Laura Jackson. A-side "Make It Out" is superb: a wholehearted musical tribute to the smooth, synth-heavy sounds of 1980s soul rich in D-Train style synth bass, wild synth squiggles, warm Rhodes chords and authentic electric guitar flourishes - all topped off with a sublime Jackson vocal. Flipside "Reach Out" is a smoother, arguably even more soulful number that sits somewhere between early '80s electrofunk, mid-80s synth-soul and simmering British street soul. It, too, is impeccably performed and produced.

Review: Still riding high off the success of their album with Charlotte Haining back in May, BCEE now come back strong with a powerful EP on Dutch label Fokuz Recordings. It's 'Crystal' that opens in thoughtful fashion with bold bass notes and a crisp breakbeat that meanders as you get lost in a day dream. There's a more raw energy to 'Poodle Dub', while playful horns bring some colour. You head will be amongst the clouds as the lush chords of 'Love Drunk' are draped over a rolling break and airy vocals soar up top. 'Stitched Up' closes out with more crisp beats, and this time tumbling melodies that fall like rain.

Review: Fokuz Recordings has been one of the leading drum & bass labels in the Netherlands for some time. Now well into triple figures when it comes to catalogue numbers, the label is still turning out interesting sounds as evidenced by this new purple-marbled 12" from Spearhead bossman BCEE. There is a beauty in the way ever so delicate one-finger piano notes are draped over the relentless bass of opener 'Alpha' that soon wins you over. 'Dogs Behaving Badly' is deeper, more soulful, more tender and insular and then 'Days Like These' is a fluid roller with well-treated string sounds before 'Overleaf' layers dub vibes with jump-up drum goodness.

Review: Drum & bass liquidator and Spearhead Records founder BCee returns for a Fokuzed, four-track liquid slab of sloshers. Wildly punchy and watery, as if attending a fantastical rave in a magical-natural mineral water spring, BCee amps up the sound design and depth here, with basses and impacts on the likes of 'Water Hole' and 'Rain' playing up the more eternal-live-giving capabilities of drum & bass. Review: BDQ Records is the outlet for jam quintet BunnDebrettQuintet, who emerged out of 90s acid jazz titans Mother Earth. Their sound has refocused on a raw and rasping strain with a live, in-the-room electricity which comes through brilliantly on this new single with Lydia Sharpe. Taking a few cues from a Led Zeppelin classic, Sharpe strikes a fierce, sultry figure on top of the sizzling hot Hammond organ vamps and low slung rhythm section. It sounds dangerous like a niche 50s cut, but there's plenty of meat on the bones of the production, while the familiar vocal hooks will go down a storm with a busy dancefloor.

Review: Hull and Leeds-based band bdrmm finally follow up their acclaimed debut album Bedroom - which was instantly passed as a modern day shoegaze classic - with a new EP. It features the recent single 'Port' as well as fresh remixes by the ever more essential Daniel Avery, plus Working Men's Club, A Place To Bury Strangers and others. That single, 'Port,' took the band in a new direction with a darker sound fun of distorted drones and beats, with howls of anguish and manic guitar frenzies. That is carried over into the rest of the EP next to some radical reworks.

Review: Mogwai's Rock Action label welcomes Bdrmm for a superb new 7" that mixes up heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics. It was written during recent album sessions at The Nave Studios in Leeds and finds them expanding on their signature dynamics and expansive sounds with reverb heavy vocals and plenty of atmospheric arrangements. That may not be a bad thing, mind, because while Once came across like a finished article, refined and prepared, things here seem somehow rawer, as though we're sitting in on a session as oppose to getting the signed off product.

'The Drag Stop' pairs some aching soft-rock vocals with tumbling congas and chunky disco drums that march on wards and upwards as the synths bring some cosmic drama. On the flip is a more retro sousing disco gem with 'Something Better' (edit). It has funky drums and piano chords dancing next to hip swinging finger clicks and some big vocals. Review: Long-serving scalpel fiend Beatconductor is in old-school mash-up mode on this tidy seven-inch single, which serves as the third release on his freshly minted GATT imprint. On 'Human Emotions' he cannily combines two classic cuts: the instrumental of Human League synth-pop classic 'Don't You Want Me' and the full female acapella from a loved-up, glassy-eyed soul/R&B gem that should be familiar to most. He does something for more revolutionary on the surprisingly brilliant 'I Can FIXX A Hole', where the acapella from a Pepper-time era Fab Four favourite rises above a tweaked, slightly dubbed-out version of a vintage, Rhodes-sporting Hall & Oates groove. It shouldn't work, but it genuinely does!

There is nothing smart about the work on 'sink About It' which simply brings a classic vocal to a big beat. It's an easy way to get any party going. On the flip is 'Let It Happen' (unreleased 7" mix) which his more nuanced and interesting, with funky bass lines, loose limbed percussion and gorgeously twinkling keys all raining down from above.
