This is another case in point: Chris Rael's 'November 18, 1983' is a joyful, funky gem, somewhat reminiscent of a lost Cure record, and this is its first ever appearance on vinyl. Rael's dedication to creating something distinct by working progressive jazz and new wave into a new sound shines through. Despite initial doubts about his musical abilities, Rael's imagination and determination drove him to produce this layered work, which has long been out of print. Review: Conceived for maximum floor-lift, Daje Funk is the namesake of both artist and label; here the elusive but fun-loving moniker brings another four whopper disco edit-remixes to vinyl, further charging the collective body with a haul of kitsch spirituals. Three out of four tracks here are "lovely edited" - intentional or not, we can't resisting stealing such brilliant turns of phrase - by longtime Roman disco purveyor Les Inferno, with the support of a cracking cadre made up of fellow producers and engineers Max Pottini, Emiliano Patrick Legato and Dom Scuteri. Stefano Fusco also handles the B1; and though we don't know the original IDs of any of the tracks here, the vibe is consistently spirited, and the artists only carefully betray their access to the original stems (made eventually obvious by faint vocal delays, extra-thwacking kick EQs, etc.).

Review: Boom! Ultra rare outernational funk reissue action by the new Habibi Funk imprint! Dalton were a late '60s soul band formed in Tunis by a group of American music enthusiasts, and their one and only LP under the Dalton name was independently released and super rare until now. "Alech" nears psychedelic territories thanks to its echoing vocals and trippy percussion, whereas "Soul Brother" is more of a classic soul ballad, but filled with the band's own native roots, of course. Be sure to check, this is hot and recommended for the diggers.

Review: Japanese electronic disco producer and performer Fujisawa Hideki aka. Dance Man coined the term "mirrorballism" as the philosophy behind his ultra-tight brand of disco. Four albums of mirror-ballistic albums, New Generation Dance Classics Volumes 1-4, appeared before his fifth album, Funkoverlic, surfaced in 2004, from which this ingenious pair of trax, 'Bomber' and 'Hey Hey Ookini Maidoari', came. Translating roughly to "there is a lot of everything" from Japanese, the latter track brims with posse-backed instrumental disco-hop steeze, worthy of bombastic emceeing should any rap collective fancy it. 'Bomber' is comparatively funky, save for its devilish wax scratches, giving way to one of Dance Man's more glamorous vocal lines.

Review: Sound Essence has got there rights to a real rare gem from East Germany's early 70s jazz scene here and it features the Horst Kruger Septet. Known as one of the top soul-jazz and beat combos of their time, they recorded two previously unreleased tracks that exemplify their unique sound. 'Ich will die Zeit nicht bereuen' is a standout German-language soul-beat hit with hard-hitting, rocking beats, enhanced by a bold brass section. The second track, 'Sonderbar,' is a soulful jazz sounds with repetitive lyrics and groovy bass topped with guitar, drums and organ. Add in a flute solo and dreamy Hammond outro and you have a real doozy.

Review: Bowie is a new label that says it intends to "dig deep into the unreleased sides of pop superstars material from the past." The opening gambit is a strong one that should hook you in for more as it comes in the form of a 7" with two fine funk instrumentals, neither of which have been put out before. 'Golden Years' has lovely live drums and meandering guitar licks for some carefree listening, while 'Fame' has a deep cut groove that rises and falls in dramatic fashion with more neat and tidy riffs adding the detail next to the big licks.

Review: When he moved to Germany in the early 1980s, Hudson People's Reg Hudson quickly connected with Johnny Davis - a funk and soul musician who had originally moved to the country in the 1960s while serving in the U.S Army. They recorded a string of tracks and albums together, though only a small number of these recordings were ever released. 'Expand Your Mind', a gorgeous, synth-enhanced, mid-tempo slab of "groove" music (a kind of warmer, more soulful and generally more organic-sounding sub-genre that sat somewhere between boogie and 80s soul), was one of those - though original copies are very hard to come by. This gem sits on side B of this issue, playing second fiddle to the previously unreleased 'Life's a Party' - a slap-bass, piano-solo-sporting slab of rubbery boogie/jazz-funk fusion.

Review: P-Vine Japan does great work once more here by bringing back into print some hugely sought-after sounds from the blues and r&b world. The first release in their new series revives Larry Davis' 1969 Kent Records single, which was originally written by Sherwood Fleming. The A-side, 'For 5 Long Years' delivers a gritty mid-tempo funk-blues groove while the B-side, 'I've Been Hurt So Many Times' (a classic subject for a blues tune) channels Willie Cobbs' signature sound. These will be familiar to anyone who has danced at a Northern Soul event and cannot be slept on.

Review: Ron Hardy's legacy lives on though stories of his legendary DJ sets but also his seemingly endless catalogue of edits and reworks of the tunes he played in his heyday. Here we have another such exhibit in which he flips some classic disco. The original version of 'No Way Back' is riddled with picked guitar licks and dreamy keys while a funky low end moves on this disco-rock gem as brass bursts out for added oomph. Hardy ups the pace, twists it beyond this realm and adds big drum breaks that are Prue bit for dancers. It's a classic in its own right that gets regular plays by more bold and eclectic DJs.

Flexing his chops over the course of eight new porcine pressurisers - plus eight previously released crispy cuts and one bonus rasher - we hear over sixteen smackout, curly-tailed mud-rootlers come plated-up badboys here, packing edits of the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Beastie Boys, Digital Underground, Wu Tang, Ultramagnetic MC's and Missy Elliott among prize swine (this is the only context in which we'd ever call such artists swine). Swiftly made and yet laid to record with an effortless hogherd's touch, we're more than happy to excuse your mouth-watering about this one, where you'd usually need to keep your cool. Review: DJ Bacon's new edits LP Super Disco Raps takes two forms: firstly as a full-length 16-track LP, and secondly as a selectors' single edition, the latter of which you see here. 'Vol. 2' hears two extra remixes that did make the big disc's cut, but Bacon decided they also suited a limited edition 7" release for good measure. Playability is the implied reason: on the A we've a glossed-out disco scratch-tool remix of Wu Tang Clan's 'Gravel Pit', on which ghostly rap acapellas are laid to a lackadaisical funk beat, and on the B there's a similar version of Ultramagnetic MC's's 'Moe Luv's Theme', which loops and skips about an unmistakable four-beat, wax-scrubbing hook.

This is one of those records, an essential 7" from Bloom and Japanese talent DJ Koco aka Shimokita, who has been spinning 45s since 2011 and can juggle beats like Messi can juggle a ball. He is a favourite with the likes of Gilles Peterson and is likely to win many new fans with this one. 'World Famous (feat 45Trio)' is a gloriously jazzy, soulful sound with funk drum breaks and warm, organic percussive tumbling next to natty chords and a killer bassline. Add in the equally irresistible 'Re Create #01' on the flip and you have a sure-fire future classic, so do not sleep.

Review: When it comes to new funk, it doesn't get much raunchier or weird than this. Packed with rhythmic rodomontade, DJ Koco Shimokit and Southpaw Chop - both from Japan - bring an adroit right and sinister left hand respectively to the art of vinyl flipping and sampling, staying true to the rule of primary sourcing: "always sample straight from the original wax." Though it's a moot point as to whether sample mileage should be legitimated as a concept in the same sense as food mileage is, we can see and hear the appeal, as this loopy chef-d'œuvre hears its samples chopped and braised to the crispest degree, sating even the most dulled of tastebuds, and letting no indelicacy past the noise gates. Side B offers a special treat for heads too: the demo version of the pair's debut single, 'Funky Soul Brother'.

Review: American legend Kenny Dope is inseparable from his Masters at Work project with Louie Vega but away from laying down a blueprint for a certain type of house music, he has always been a huge funk collector and beatmaker. He's back now with more raw, groove-heavy sounds with an infectious track from Unreleased Project, 'Get On Down' which combines classic breakbeats. Another standout is 'Gunshot' featuring Shaggy. This one blends reggae and hip-hop influences with Kenny's signature break-heavy production. It's a great mash-up that's perfect for plenty of heavy turntable action.

Review: These artists got together back in 1969 to record Let The Sunshine In, a landmark album that blended jazz, rock and soul into a vibrant sound that captured the spirit of its era with its experimental soundscapes and electrifying performances. These two tunes are taken from the album and come on 7" for useful DJ deployment. Driscoll's emotive, soulful vocals pair beautifully with Auger's masterful Hammond organ and the Trinity's dynamic instrumentation. The title track in particular is a real anthem of its day and is sure to make just a s much of a mark all these years on.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Canadian go-slow master Eddie C is back with more of his sumptuous and sensuous grooves on the magnificent Funkyjaws Music. This new 12" kicks off with the emotionally intense and gospel-laced vocal sounds of 'Jesus Calling' with a passionate pastor lighting up the airways. 'Show Me The Way' is a more paired down sound this time with a raw soul edge and nice dusty drums, then 'Superior Disco' brings some lavish string stabs and funky basslines to some killer instrumental grooves. The Afro-Cuban band and Ubiquity Records favourites descend upon us once more in a sallying storm of Isthmian lightning, bridging the spirit of classic Fania and Tico Records releases, and whipping them back around and through gales of Latin funk, son, timba and boogaloo. "Batanga" refers to the traditional Cuban instrument heard throughout their records, if you listen closely: new A cut 'La Cuota' brings an urgent, hyperbolic funk, while 'Darling' contrasts with nixie moods, a heart-burning Latin soul lament.

Review: Like a veteran striker in his final season, GAMM has really captured some top form on late and now drops a fire premiere from Chicago's Emmaculate and legendary Basement Boys producer DJ Spen. Opener 'Step Into A Black Whole' is a genre-hopping 11-minute journey that moves from deep house to a hip-hop breakdown featuring KRS-One before morphing into a jazzy Afrobeat stomper. First heard by GAMM contributor Coflo during a wild house set, the track blew the roof off and always will. On the B-side, 'Boogie On Disco Woman' delivers a gritty funk, disco and soul rework with raw drums, clavinets and soulful vocals. Two standouts.

Review: A modern lunar take on jazz and disco, Jazz On The Moon hears Italian producer Paolo Fedreghini moonwalk backwards through live horns, bass, synth and guitar for a crisply produced six-track EP. Opening with original NASA-issue intercom vocals from the 1968 moon landing, 'Interstellar' crafts a moonscape of Harmon-muted trumpet and avant-garde growls, while expansive electro-funk opens out on the title track and 'Distant Planet', by which point a tonal shift is underway. The vibe is increasingly P-funky, erring desolate on the interluding 'Outer Space', before we wind up purblinded by the light side of the mood on closers 'Groove Odyssey' and 'Cosmic Funk'.

Review: Originally hailing from Washington DC, Father's Children were one of the capital's most promising funk outfits in the late 70s. This new 7" reissue on South Street Soul revives two prized tracks from their Mercury Records era, produced by Wayne Henderson of The Crusaders. 'Hollywood Dreaming' is a breezy, rolling slice of mellow soul-funkithe sort of elegant groove that turns up on late-night radio, all gentle clavs and cruising vocals. Flip it and 'Shine On' turns up the energy, driven by a snapping slap bassline, crisp brass jabs and a slick group vocal arrangement. Both cuts originally appeared on their 1979 LP, but the original 45 has long been a holy grail for collectorsifetching triple digits. This modern rare groove emulation by Florence, 'Funky Song', lays down a phantasmically funky original breakbeat, fleshed out and swollen unto the most maximal of proportions. Review: The Treasure team keeps up the momentum of its early release with another fruitful dive into the annals of house history. This time, they have dug up more nuggets from FR and have refined them for contemporary floors. 'ET Is Coming Home' (vocal) is a slow and dubby cut with percolating live bass and muted horns next to some Ubiquity style vocal soul. The instrumental allows the superbly loose-limbed and live drums room to really shine, and then comes an epic, 10-minute-plus jazz-drenched house odyssey that's alive with swirling cosmic radiance and busy chords and synths. A real trip for proper music heads.

Review: Emma Noble, the emerging soul singer from London, delivers a powerful performance on the girl group soul anthem 'Unstoppable'. Her second single, it's poised to become a next-gen floor-filler; catch us playing it on repeat, *in flagranti*, after it premiered on Craig Charles' BBC6 Soul Show in early 2025. 'Going Going Gone' backs it up on the B-side, as the first single from FPE's upcoming album Waves. Hearing rising Australian singer-songwriter and pop genius J Mahon on vocal duties, the track's catchy brass sections combine with J's androgynous soul vocals, and evokes the sounds of young Motown artists in the style's 60s adolescence.

Review: Before making it big with Maze, Frankie Beverly was the man behind Raw Soul, a heavyweight, politically conscious band whose fuzzy, full-throttle sound sat somewhere between the J.B's and Sly & The Family Stone. The band's most famous moment was 1975 single 'Color Blind', which was originally recorded as 'What's The Color?' Here that never-before-heard recording is finally issued. Rich in fuzz-soaked horns, crunchy drum-breaks, weighty bass and clipped funk guitar licks, the track features some superb, James Brown style lead vocals from Beverly. Brilliantly, there's also a chance to savour the unheard Raw Soul instrumental version, which features an extended, DJ-friendly drum solo midway through. A slice of history that's well worth picking up. As played by DJ Koco....

Review: After their hair-dropping debut LP Latin Freaks, Funkool Orchestra keep the stovetop hot with a high-energy 7" vinyl, bridging the delta between their first and second albums. A Maledetta Discoteca production, 'Tengo Che Ffa' blends Mediterranean funk, disco, and Neapolitan groove into an allusive proto-P-funk prance, especially if, at least, the B-side's title is to be believed. The latter alternately named 'Dance With Pezz', we hear them pick up the pace with a clav-spiced, conga-crammed number. Take it from us: the record is a clavi-net good.

Review: Having unleashed six EPs featuring their own edits of mostly obscure disco and boogie treats, Italian twosome G&D have decided to do a 'guest edition' of their popular 12" rework series. The A-side has a Bristol flavour, as two renowned West Country crate diggers step up to the plate. Mike Shawe delivers 'Heartbreaker', a perfectly executed tweak of a low-slung, lightly synth-splattered independent disco number blessed with super-soulful lead vocals, before Community Discos chief Admin lays down the loose-limbed disco-funk excellence of 'Alive & Well'. Over on side B, Real Deal get the party well and truly started with the horn-heavy disco-boogie joy of 'Hey Love', while Sparkling Attitude make merry with a Latin funk shuffler on the superb 'Zio Roberto'.

Review: Do It With Soul comes through with a healthy dose of dancefloor heat featuring a pair of well-executed new edits. On the A-side of this limited edition 7" is 'Get Up Gaff,' a James Brown-inspired rework with some nice analogue 808s driving forward the raw vocal loops and jacked-up drum hits. On the flip, 'Mango In the Jungle' channels more James Brown energy as it collides 'Mango Meat' with 'Give It Up and Turn It Loose.' The result is a wild mix of funk breaks, squealing organs and soulful vocal details that keep things moving and grooving.

Review: Brooklyn producer Gerard Young aka Ge-ology has always championed intricacy in his original house productions, preferring to survey and purpose-build from the ground up, not prefabricate. His Versions series through Hot Biscuit has been going since 2025, with a higher-than-usual number of deep cuts (usually six in total for each 12") all given names like "Extended FeelTheFire Mix", "From SideToSide", "CapricornTribe Mix" and "Raw Stripdown Version", evidencing a sense of literary licence and playing on otherwise boxed-in remix titling traditions. Janky sampled refuse of disco-soul and gospel replay over 'Keeep The Beat' like trash-humped radio components larked from wreckage - our fave track here by far.

Review: Dynamite Cuts continue in their mission to share jazz, funk and soul deep cuts with the world, this time pulling a timeless gilded funk rabbit out of their hats. Gregory James Edition took on the collective mantle of "Prophets Of Soul" at the moment of their 1973 debut, which would only then be followed by the 1979 record Gonna Grow Some Gold before an eventual disbandment. A shame, since 'Ain't No Sunshine' and 'Changing Things' stand out as the record's finest offcuts; the first track uses its various clavinets and Farfisa Combo organs to estrange an existingly capricious funk sound, rendering it rather odd, alien, spacious. 'Changing Things' contrasts with upswells of gushing piano set to a funk backbeat, which come yet measured by an admirable key change control, again held down by lead player Gregory Bibb.

His GU Classics label is a place where he drops his own edits of special talks from across the years and many different styles. This latest edition starts with him playing keys on Ingram's starring jazz-funk-disco banger 'Music Has The Power.' After that comes James Brown's 'Take Me Higher' with some club-ready drums extended for modern floors. Last of all is a subtle rework of Meco's super vibey and percussive, chord-laced and swinging 'Cantina Boogie.'

Review: Discos Martos is a new division of Rocafort Records. The imprint takes its bow here with a cultured single from soul singer Glen Anthony Henry who is originally from Los Angeles but now based in Spain. His vibe is to blend the best bits from classic soul with a modern edge that hits different. The A-side, 'Thankful,' is an upbeat tribute to love and friendship featuring a catchy hook and an Al Green-style drum groove. The B-side, 'Fade Away', highlights Henry's falsetto in a deep, introspective ballad. Both tracks are produced by Oscar Martos using full analogue recording so they capture the warmth of 70s soul and make for an exciting start for Discos Martos.
