Cramp Your Style (2:13)
Cramp Your Style (Conomark & Hong Kong edit (brew)) (3:41)
Review: All The People was a Florida-based soul act who joined vocalist Robert Moore Jr on this highly sought after '45. Moore was the master of a singing style known as 'soul scatting'. His career later took him to Miami, where in 1979 he joined a group headed by Herb Reed, one of the original Platters. He stayed with Reed until 1993. Originally released on Blue Candle back in 1972, this much sought after classic has been reissued thanks to Japan's Ultra Vybe with an edit on the flip by Conomark & Hong Kong, which retains the original's big band style of soul music in the tradition of the legendary James Brown.

Mister Magic (4:27)
Mister Magic (dub version) (4:29)
Review: This Japanese import on Vortex Records offers a brilliant disco-reggae version of a classic tune by Dean Fraser & Robert "Dubwise" Browne. 'Mister Magic' is a mid-paced chugger with oodles of reverb and bass so funky it will tie you in knots. The acoustic guitar melodies are warm and slide up and down the scale and big horns add flesh and fun. On the flip it is dubbed out to the max, with endless hissing hi-hat tails and mind-melting bass but the same sense of playful and bubbling funk. A real scorcher for sure.

Heart & Soul (5:39)
Track 2 (3:34)
Review: For Fourth Wave Record Factory, MURO has put together a couple of new and exclusive 7" releases that feature two classic Japanese AOR tracks by artists who very much played a part in defining the sound. Firstly, Ginji Ito's smooth and soulful 'Heart and Soul,' originally from his tenth album, shines with mellow mid-tempo vibes and glossy vocals and melodies. On the flip side is 'Uwaki na Kare,' a beloved cover of a classic US disco track from Ritsuko Kazemi's third album that comes correct with a catchy, laid-back Saturday love groove. This release marks the first time these iconic songs have been pressed on 7".

Let's Start (Macka-Chin edit) (3:30)
Review: JariBu Afrobeat Arkestra started out as an instrumental band playing Afrobeat. Like many musicians in this sound world, they were heavily influenced by the late great Fela Kuti but also bring plenty of their own unique spirit to their work over five fine albums since 2009. This time out they appear on a new 7" on Japan's Urban Disco's label with 'Let's Start.' It is an intense and uplifting jazz, funk and Afro melange that has mad guitar lines and cosmic synths all worked into he busy arrangement. On the flip, the one and only Ryuhei the Man serves up one of his edits.

Get Up Featuring Vanessa Freeman (DJ Kawasaki 45 edit) (4:11)
Get Up (DJ Kawasaki Roy Vibestrumental mix) (3:35)
Review: Kyoto Jazz Massive's most recent album, the critically acclaimed Message From a New Dawn, was packed to the rafters with highlights, with their surprise collaboration with jazz-funk legend Roy Ayers, 'Get Up', arguably being the best of the lot. Here the track gets a deserved single release, albeit via two 45-friendly re-edits from Japanese scalpel fiend DJ Kawasaki. He subtly snips and chops the track on the A-side '45 Edit', finding room for both the various instrumental solos and vocal sections while keeping the original's focus and energy in-tact. Over on the flip he chooses to showcase Ayers' superb vibraphone solos, jettisoning the original version's vocals on an all-instrumental revision that's a genuine jazz-funk-goes-disco treat.

How (5:30)
Review: No one's edits and disco bombs slap quite like Rahaan's. The US master of all things soulful and funky can tap right into your core with his work and this new EP on Hot Biscuit is the latest example of that. 'Get Up' opens with retro disco favours, funky guitars and lung-busting vocals that bring the heat. 'Zombies' sinks into a nice silky sound with sliding cymbals and hi hats and knotted bass, then 'How' slows it down a bit for a more playful and seductive disco sound with nice horns and squelchy bass. Three real heaters.

Review: If you don't have love for Rahsaan then you don't have love for life. The American is a veteran of the edit scene and someone who can flip any joint into a joyous groove. Here, Hot Biscuit have assembled a limited double 12" that brings together some of his best 'Disco Edits, Versions & Dubs." 'Big Bisou' opens up with a jumble of Afro drums and loose limbed rhythms, 'Mamoe Lowe' then has tribal vocal chants and raw percussive energy, and 'Preto Velho' then brings a little more laid back soul to the party. '77' is a funky disco strider and 'Secondo' closes with some hard assed funk.

Chicago Song (2:52)
Review: Il Tempo reissue some tunes form Ralph Marco Band, an alias of a bootlegging collective that has also gone by the name of Baby Gravy or Babbygravy to avoid detection. This limited edition, remastered 45rpm takes on 'High Snobiety' and 'Chicago Song' from the Happy Records album Mister Marco's Music and both are soul-jazz pearlers. The a-side is a firm favourite with the likes of Craig Charles with its big horns and psyched out synths. 'Chicago Song' is a deeper soul cut with a 60's spy theme feel, florid trumpets and rolling rhythm section. A must-cop for all instrumental funk and soul fans.

Be My Girl (2:57)
Lonely Man (2:50)
Review: Antifaz Records have pulled off something of a coup here, unearthing a Mod-era soul gem that must be one of the more obscure reissues of recent times. Very little appears to be known about the record's origin, or that of Tito Ramirez. Both tracks, though, are dancefloor fire. "Be My Girl" sees Ramirez singing in Spanish over a swinging, toe-tapping groove and typical 1960s harmony backing vocals. It's typical of U.S rhythm and blues of the early 1960s, with punchy soul horns emphasizing the smooth but floor-friendly backing track. The slightly more up-tempo "Lonely Man", in which Ramirez switches to English, is much more of a riotous and oddly psychedelic concoction.

Ben Jamin - "Old Time Feeling" (4:50)
Review: French funk lovers Acts of Sedition roll out another tasty double 7" here that features some massive joints from around the world. First up is the Latin heat of Rare Cuts's 'Amigo Bracno' with its big, bright leads, string lushness and percolating, percussive groove goodness all finished with a great Portuguese vocal. Monsieur Van Pratt Le Groove's 'El Rap Clap O' (Regroove) hits a little harder but with similar funk playfulness and some great chord work and Bully Boy then offers the raw and strident funk of 'Fear'n'Loathing In Funk Vegas.' Ben Jamin slows it right down with the sun-kissed late night bliss of 'Old Time Feeling.'

Review: La Differencia, Dutch singer Hubertus Richenel Baars' 1982 debut, has long been considered something of a slept-on classic by those in the know. Charmingly lo-fi and homemade in feel, the cassette's 10 tracks - six of which are featured on this first ever vinyl reissue - brilliantly joined the dots between blue-eyed soul, spacey electro, disco, electrofunk and slap-bass wielding space boogie. As usual, Music From Memory has done a terrific job with the re-mastering; the tracks sound stronger than ever, if even they have retained some of the charming fuzziness of Baars' original production. All told, it's another essential reissue from Music Is Memory.

Review: Funk maestros Rockid Sound Machine returns with yet more of their timeless and seductive instrumental funk sounds. They have turned out tons of it over the years on a steady and always high quality basis. This double A-side kicks off with 'Scorpio' featuring tight drums and wah-wah guitar smudges next to big horns. The track blends funk with soul and merges old-school vibes with modern energy. On the flip side, 'Stardust' ramps things up with prickly drumming and percussion, wet cymbal crashes and more bendy guitar work that brings psyched-out 60s vibes. Another great outing for Rockid Sound Machine's signature bristling beats.

Review: The ever on point Japanese label At Home Sound is back with another blistering brace of brilliant edits. DJ Kawasaki steps out first with a special 45 edit version of a Soul Boogie mix by the late great Phil Asher, who himself was reworking the Root Soul original 'Spirit of Love.' It's the sort of lush and feel good disco tune that comes laden with a ton of great synths and guitar riffs as well as the all important vocal. The ever green Ryuhei The Man then turns in a bossa tinged, Latin flecked edit of a Mano Ariba mix of the same tune that is packed with sunshine.

Review:  It's always a fun game to see when you first hear someone drop Roy Ayers's ubiquitous warm weather classic 'Everybody Love's The Sunshine.' This year has been rather cold in early spring but soon as this one gets dropped you cannot help but feel rays o your face even if they haven't yet appeared. It's a stone cold gem with its lazy drum tumbles and arching synths. The keys even sound like they can't be bothered to really move properly boucle of the heat and the lush vocal is the umbrella in the cocktail, if you will.

You'd be wise to snap up a copy of this reissue if you love vintage-sounding contemporary soul and funk, because even by the high standards of the Australian soul scene, it's a gem. Lead vocalist Roxie Ray is at her powerful but emotive best throughout, while Dojo Cuts' musical backing is authentically fuzzy, horn-heavy and as life-affirming as they come. Highlights include, but are in no way limited to, 'Easy To Come Home', slamming Latin funk number 'Mannacita', Meters tribute 'Sonny's Strut' and heart-aching slow jam 'I'd Rather Go Blind'.

Review: Space Oddities (1972 - 1982) are the results of Frenchman Georges Achille Teperino aka Nino Nardini, fellow countryman Roger Roger and German Eddie Warner's collaborations over ten years at Ganaro recording studio. Given some underground recognition in the late nineties by the likes of Barry 7 of Add N to (X) (with his Connectors series) or UK electronica legend Luke Vibert, they can now add Alexis Le-Tan (Les Edits Du Golem) and Jess as devotees, who made the effort of compiling the release. As Born Bad stated quite succinctly, the trio used their "strange instruments to sketch out the beginnings of something that resembled the future of music. This collection presents some of the highlights from their light-hearted, electronic pop sessions."

Apparently designed as a musical version of The Jungle Book, the 1971 set saw the experienced multi-instrumentalists offer up a colourful, quirky and highly entertaining collection of cuts that variously drew on exotica, lounge music, early synthesizer soundscapes, Afro-funk, psych-funk, and the tongue-in-cheek oddness of Jean-Jacques Perrey. As this remastered, 50th anniversary reissue proves, the album remains hugely alluring and entertaining, delivering a string of off-kilter musical highlights that can't fail to put smiles on faces.

Review: We believe that A Healthy Obsession With Petanque - yes, that game of clanking metal "boules" so beloved by aging Frenchmen - is one of the album tiles of 2016. Musically, it's pretty darn tasty too. It brings together Chicago-born, Paris-based good-time MC Racecar and producer Grant Phabao for a cheery, floor-friendly trip into boom-bap rap territory. Racecar's confident, flexible rhymes work perfectly over Phabao's killer backing tracks, which variously doff a cap to Breakestra style funk, Ska, Afrobeat, dub and soul. In other words, it's a hugely confident set, stuffed full of DJ-friendly tracks, which should appeal to those who enjoy the work of Jurassic 5 and People Under The Stairs, for starters.

The mood is the most vulnerable yet as a result of things he learnt about himself during therapy over the last two years. Dive in deep.

From the toxic-levels of cosmic funk on "Boogie" to the dreamier, space ballad "Dark Moon", this is the sound of a super-tight, incredibly talented funk band who really should have been up there with Cymande or Average White Band.

Review: There's much to set the pulse racing on this double-vinyl set, which sees veteran dancefloor-focused nu-jazz sorts Renegades Of Jazz get the remix treatment from an impressive array of artists. Check, for example, Hugo Kant's lolloping, hip-hop tempo take on "Hip To The Jive", Daytoner's sun-kissed and carnival-ready D&B-jazz revision of "Hooked On Swing", DJ Andy Taylor's stomping, Northern Soul style version of "Blow Your Horn" and Frohlocker's deliciously percussive, horn-heavy remix of "Voodoo Juju". Also impressive are Deli Kutt's impressively heavy dancefloor jazz rework of "Black Milk" and Tim McVicar's hybrid Latin-jazz/analogue house version of "Jitterbug". In other words, if jazz-fired club cuts are your thing, step this way.

This classic soul album includes "Trust In Me", "Say You Will" and "Call Me", the latter being written by Aretha Franklin. Travelin' features guest performances by Bernie Worrell and William "Bootsy" Collins. A classic soul album for your ears' sultrier side.

Review: This 180g swimming pool blue vinyl is a Record Store Day exclusive of an early 80s gem. Rhyze to the Top came in 1981 and marked the debut album by American funk and r&b band Rhyze. Listening back now it's clear the record captured the vibrant energy of early 80s sounds with lush synth work and nice Casio keys. That means it is a must-have for funk and r&b heads of any era and is why original copies often sell for over L50 on second hand markets. The album has remained out of print on vinyl for 43 years up to now but for this occasion has been fully remastered. Whack it on and take yourself back to a golden age.

Review: The artwork alone on this one is almost worth the cover price before you get stuck into the disco boogie beats it adorns. How such a rugged looking, heavily bearded man can craft such delightful dance floor gold is a mystery but this Brazilian-American from Rio de Janeiro did, from the late sixties and on through the 1980s. This album from singer, songwriter, producer, composer, guitarrst, businessman and true romantic Almir Ricardi originally came in 1984 and has a young heart but a mature sound with lots of brillaint synths, upbeat drum machine grooves and catchy hooks.

Review: A bona fide Brazilian rarity: Alucinolandia was the only full length from talented multi instrumentalist and bandleader Zito who really should have enjoyed more attention. Ranging from the R&B style stomp of "Primeira Conjugacao" to the Gershwin standard "Love Is Here To Stay" via the instant feel good sensations of "Bye Bye" where you feel like you're in the room, clicking, clapping and crying along with the band, this is a timeless document that should have had more exposure than it did.

Review: Jazz-funk doesn't get much better than this one from Italian pianist, arranger, conductor, composer and record producer Puccio Roelens. It is a fantastic selection of high energy, densely arranged tunes with plenty of standout solos along the way. On other albums, the artist explored more soul and disco sounds but this one from 1976 is all about the jazz and the funk. There are plenty of lush electric piano lines that reach for the skies, fuzzy guitar riffs and noodling basslines that make you all warm inside. This fully licensed reissue is limited to just 400 copies.

Review: Root Soul is the solo vision of one bassist, composer and producer Kenichi Ikeda, whose jazzfunk, disco, boogie and soul chops know few bounds when combined with his contemporaries Soki Kimura (drums), Hiderow Nishioka (trumpet, percussion) ad Atsushi Goto (trombone). With Ikeda himself playing bass, guitar and keyboard, the team have made something rather extravagant and wondrous.

Review: Well, what can we say about this great piece of jazz fusion that hasn't already been said? The short answer is not much, but we can certainly add to the list of compliments and tell you that this is a super-clean Polypro repress, so you don't have to go out your way to listen to it PROPERLY. The man, Roy Ayers, is obviously a legend who still performs to this day, but this album must be some of his best work, and contains the cult single "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", sampled by everyone form here to Katmandu, and still a flawless song to this day. This dude is up there with the lies Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc etc. A stone-cold classic.

Givin' Me The Blues
Review: We like stories here at Juno HQ, especially ones as wild, funky and freaky as Roy's. The late, great jazz man Porter collaborated with the likes of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, survived wild drug addictions, been in and out of prison and is widely recognised as one of the chief instigators of 'future jazz'. His Sound Machine contributions can be found at the latter end of his discography. Mellowing somewhat with age, this selection shows more signs of jazz funk than the more experimental stuff that really put him on the map. Soothing, easy-going and sometimes heart-punching poignant and reflective, this is a fine introduction to of one of modern music's most unsung characters.

Review: By the late 1960s, drummer Roy Porter had already worked with some of jazz's true greats (Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie included), spent time in prison and weened himself off heavy drugs. It was at this point that he founded Roy Porter Sound Machine, a heavyweight jazz-funk combo with a penchant for raw rhythm and blues. The band's 1971 debut LP, Jessica, is one of the most magnificent sets in his vast discography, as this timely reissue proves. Featuring sweaty, floor-ready rhythms from Porter, beefy bass, wild electric piano licks, fuzzy guitars and some fine brass arrangements, the album is as good a collection of jazz-funk/funk fusion tracks as you're ever likely to hear. In a word: essential!

Review: The 1971 debut album from Roy Porter Sound Machine, Jessica, has long been celebrated as one of the greatest examples of heavy jazz/funk fusion. Less celebrated, but no less potent in its own way, is the band's 1975 sequel, Inner Feelings. Here reissued on vinyl for the first time in a while courtesy of Mo-Jazz, the set contains a string of Blaxploitation-era numbers rich in warm and undulating bass, jazzy horn arrangement, flanged guitars and ear-catching electric piano licks. As you'd expect, Porter's drum-rhythms are excellent throughout, while his Curtis Mayfield-esque vocals do the business on a handful of tracks. If you love the funkier end of the jazz-funk spectrum, you need Inner Feelings in your life.

Review: Chicago funk band Royal Flush release sonly one full length on their local Texas label Lucky and that was Hot Spot. They did so in 1980 before later reissuing it via GEC and although it isn't one of the most well known albums amongst funk heads, we think that is rather a crime because it is a top notch if not underrated album. It is couched in the traditions of the genre but with nods to styles like P-Funk. If you can find an OG copy you will have to shell out plenty of money and although this same label put out a CD version in 1994, it has not been reissued on vinyl before.

Review: Given the wide-eyed, largely downtempo nature of their music, it's perhaps a little surprising that it took Late Night Tales this long to ask Royksopp to mix a volume in the long-running after-hours series. Royksopp are, of course, old hands at this kind of thing - they delivered an impressive Back To Mine comp back in 2007 - and use the opportunity to mix-up a typically heady selection of stoner soft rock (Little River Band, FR David), sparse dub-rock (Tuxedomoon), cinematic soundscapes (Johann Johannsen), psychedelia (Prelude), well-worn favourites (Acker Bilk) and folksy Balearica (John Martyn). Fans will be pleased to see a sprinkling of unreleased Royksopp fare, including intensely beautiful opener "Daddy's Groove".

Review: The first fruits of Be With Records' recently announced partnership with Tele Music is a reissue of one of the legendary library music label's most far-sighted and sought-after releases: Tonio Rubio's 1972 collection 'Rhythms'. Offering the best in deep disco-breaks, laidback Blaxploitation funk and killer groove-based instrumentals, the album now comes accompanied by extensive new liner notes from Rubio and many of the crate-digging DJs who have been inspired by the album. Highlights include - but are in no way limited to - the wonderfully cosmic and otherworldly 'Dead Slow', the low-slung delights of 'Bass In Action' parts one and two, and the Pierre Henry-esque brilliance of 'Latin Leitmotiv'.

Review: Patrice Rushen's album from1982, Straight From The Heart,' is a real landmark, It now gets presented as a definitive version by Strut. It was made during a period when the original label were striving to make 'sophisticated dance music.' Mission accomplished. This is an album packed with high class arrangements and disco and boogie stylings along with great musicianship. Patrcei's own vocals explore a broader range than ever before, and singles from the seminal album included 'Breakout!', 'Number One' and the most ionic of them all, 'Forget Me Nots'. The album overall had huge success, was a Billboard Chart hit and became a regular source for samples in the world of hip hop and R&B as well as picking up a Grammy nomination.
