Cat: FNR 163. Rel: 12 May 21
Ethneogalvanik (3:30)
Good Morning Brew (3:28)
Review: This month Funk Night Records is releasing a trio of "45s" from previously unheard combo John Reed and the Automatics. They're all excellent in different ways, though this double A-side could well be the best of the lot. Title track 'Ethneogalvanik' sees them deliver a formidably fuzzy, horn-heavy tribute to African soul and funk full of Meters-style organ lines, crunchy Tony Allen style polyrhythmic drums, fluid bass and flanged guitars. 'Good Morning Brew' takes a more forthright, floor-ready approach, with more prominent guitar licks, Afrobeat style drums and rising horn blasts.

Reach Out I'll Be There (2:46)
Review: The always reliable Funk Night label outta the US of A has put out more than 160 essential 45s and the latest is another slice of gold. It is just one of three, yes three, 7"s John Reed and the Automatics are putting out this month and it is supercharged stuff: a-side 'Funky Mule' has powerful horns, hard hitting beats and a raw and rugged aesthetic that will demand plenty of sweat on the dance floor. On the flip is a cover of an all time classic - 'Reach Out I'll Be There' gets reworked as a more strident beat with a lead riff that will get hands in the air. As always with this label, these are highly limited so act fast to secure your piece of funk.

On The Run
On The Run (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: FNR 165. Rel: 12 May 21
On The Run (3:57)
Xmas (3:02)
Review: Funk Night Records continues to showcase the music of newcomers John Reed & The Automatics, who here drop the third of three simultaneously released seven-inch singles. Inspired by the flanged funk records of the psychedelic era, 'On The Run' adds psyche-funk guitar sounds and trippy, effects-laden lead lines to a weighty, low-slung groove full of boisterous drum-breaks, booming bass guitar and wah-wah-heavy guitar riffs. They flip the script on 'Xmas', peppering a looser funk groove with squelchy bass, spacey synths sounds and psychedelic organ riffs. It's not quite as heavy as the A-side, but still rocks harder than Santa Claus after an all-night session with Keith Richards.

The Stardust Break
The Stardust Break (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: FNR 185. Rel: 20 Apr 23
Stardust Break (3:12)
Space Break (2:00)
Review: If you're after fresh workouts for body-popping break-dance sessions, this 45 from John Reed & The Automatics on Funk Night Records should be essential listening. While there's something undeniably alluring about the more suspenseful B-side, 'Space Break' - where effects-laden electric guitar licks and alien-sounding synths rise above a metronomic bassline and a relaxed funk break - it's the more up-tempo A-side, 'Stardust Break', that's the real winner. Based around drum-breaks that reference 'Apache' and a seriously squelchy synth bassline, it's an intergalactic club jam that's just tailor-made for headpins, windmills and caterpillars.
